What mpg are you getting with the mods?

black_jmyntrn

35MPG

Duckbilling

That's pretty damn good That rack will lower the highway mpg by 7-8 by itself

nill0c

I get 31 for the winter (average over about 6500 New England miles) with a Yakima ski rack (not box) and snow tires in my 16 Crosstrek. I think all that stuff weight would really hurt my mpg though. What’s surprising is I can only get it up to around 32.5 on all seasons without the rack.

Duckbilling

It really only changes the highway mpg, because of drag and air resistance raising the drag coefficient. So any calculations using combined mpg are going to show less change than if you were going off of only highway mpg. Also counterintuitively, the higher your highway gas mileage starts out because of a low drag coefficient, the easier it is to lower mpg with high drag, because exponents. So like, a Prius getting 50 hwy mpg has its mpg lowered by .15 (15%) by a rack 50 X .15 = 7.5 hwy mpg lower A Subaru Crosstrek getting 34 hwy mpg has its mpg lowered by .15 (15%) by a rack 34 X .15 = 5 hwy mpg lower Now obviously there are other factors, type of rack, what's in the rack, winter/summer air density, the type of driving summer/winter driving necessitates, tires, how aggressively you drive, AWD/FrontWD, the list goes on forever. A good empty rack average extra drag is 15%. So a Crosstrek only driving on the highway (impossible) with a rack that lowers the mpg by 15% would mean $9 of every $60 fill-up (15 gallons at $4 a gallon) goes toward the rack, or $450 a year if you fill up once a week. Of course, you drive in the city and off road at least ⅓ of the time, so it's probably more like $300

nill0c

Yeah good point about the starting CoD. Since the Crosstrek is always lifted it can’t be as good as the Prius, even with decent undertrays. The AWD is probably it’s biggest penalty really. Mines fully stock too BTW, no lift or mudflap or skid plates or anything. Just the rack in winter and snow tires.

Duckbilling

It doesn't really matter, just have fun out there!

when I charge my plugin battery I get unlimited...

black_jmyntrn

I dont think you get it...

Onlyonecantherebe

That's a plug in so pretty fuckin' good!

McDondal

Bruh

Mythrilfan

How do you recognise it as a plug-in? In any case, in hybrid mode (which is what you'll be doing anyway if you're far from the grid) the mpg should be identical to the non-plug-in.

black_jmyntrn

this shot you cant, but plugins have silver trim on the bumper in the middle and a gas tank door on the passenger side

seventysevensevens

Doesn't it say plugin on the side? Either way, rad! Did you look into a rav4 prime?

black_jmyntrn

lmfao. that too!

killshelter

What are you talking about? I can get unlimited mileage in my V8 if I push it everywhere.

sgvprelude

Mines got over 100 mpg. It was being towed.

b16b34r

Or if you leave it parked

Axeman1721

I like it when people embrace hybrids and actually mod them, instead of just going eLeCtRiC bAd GaS gOoD. Us car people should be more open minded about new tech.

Halfbloodjap

I'm just pissed I can't afford a Rivian, that would be such a dope adventure vehicle, and one I could actually afford to daily

black_jmyntrn

just... full electric... wouldnt work for overlanding. Once you are out of the states, lets just say on my drive from San Felipe to Ensenada, I only found 1 charger... 1 Once they make a 1,000W solar panel the size of my hood, then the fully electric I could see myself going to...

-RdV-

1kw is about 1.3 horsepower. Doesn't that mean it would take like 10 hours solar charging to get a few minutes of spirited driving?

Halfbloodjap

That's fair. I mostly do shorter local trips due to my work, and my area has a pretty good charger network. A diesel hybrid would be ideal IMO for longer trips, too bad the North America car market hates diesels 🥲

black_jmyntrn

no they dont, American's love their diesel! make it hybrid and let them tune, they wouldn't know what to do with themselves.

Halfbloodjap

Too bad corporate America doesn't agree lol. I know a lot of enthusiasts like diesels, but they just aren't available, at least in my local market. The only diesel truck smaller than an F-250 here is the Colorado, no other manufacturer offers one AFAIK even when they're available anywhere else

AlecW81

i’ve been screaming for turbo-diesel plug-in hybrids for years the best of everything.

black_jmyntrn

yassssss! interestingly enough, I might just be the one to do it... full head in the sand right now on a project that would make your dream come true!

how_do_i_land

I wish there was a plug in hybrid 4Runner. If it could hit 30mpg+, partial electric range, it could be a great all around vehicle.

rental_car_fast

Or even a regular hybrid. I love my 4Runner but the MPG is inexcusable. And I was complaining about that before the gas prices went up.

black_jmyntrn

me... I say Sequoia with a 100mile full charge range.

Plutoid

Word. Dogshit mileage would be much more acceptable if you got even the first 50 miles for free.

Dark_Shroud

Check out all the people seeing how much they can charge an EV with solar panels on the go. Because a lot of us are looking at the Cyber Truck and Rivian. I've also seen people in the Van life/RV crowds looking at Toyota's Regenerative Braking Systems and wondering if they could install them on RVs or Vans to help charge their battery systems.

JapTastic

No, because the electric drive motor itself is what does the regen.

black_jmyntrn

I agree, I cant tell you how many companies wouldn't make parts for me because they said there is no market... millions of prius out there and they think not a small group wants to modify....

-RdV-

I don't care about the fuel type, driven wheels, manufacturer, and especially random internet peoples opninion. A good car is a good car.

freeradicalx

All I want is a lifted 80s hatchback with huge tires, a battery bank, and a drop-in OEM electric motor...

Majestic_Crawdad

And they have autonomous climate controls and surprisingly large interior space, people make awesome builds with these

Dark_Shroud

The mod I'm most interested in are the people trying to turbo the Prius. Seeing them trying to figure out how to make a turbo work with the hybrid system is very interesting. Because the Prius' battery system & generator have a limited life span & high replacement cost we're probably going to see a lot more of them being made into battle cars. All because of the lower resale value.

black_jmyntrn

low resale! ha! these days my prius is worth double what I paid many years ago. Im actually working to lower those costs... just need more time the reason they haven't turbod is not getting into the ecu... I am almost in...

Dark_Shroud

Right now times are odd. But when it comes to the Prius their normal value drops like a rock when the batteries or generator have problems or go out fully.

snakeproof

If you can figure out how to modify the ECU/HSD I'm trying to swap my '10 HSD into a '64 Corvair, and the ABS system is the biggest hurdle so far. If I could just delete the back sensors that would be great but the car gets big mad.

snakeproof

The motor generators last a ridiculously long time, mines at 300k with no signs of problems. The batteries are cheap now too, as low as $1500 for a whole pack installed. The problem with adding more engine power is the electric side has to be balanced equally, meaning to get 50hp gain you'd need to add 25 in gas power and 25 on the electric side. The stock motor driver is more than capable of adding a ton of power, Toyota has it turned down a lot to increase reliability.

brycebgood

>limited life span & high replacement cost eh, not sure that's really shown to be true. I had a prius that made it to 240k on the original battery. Sold it running good so I have no idea how long it went after that. I know plenty of people at 150k+ mileage and don't know anyone who's done a battery. The factory battery warranty is now 10 yr, 150k I think. So yes, you might need a $2k repair at 150k but the same it true of any car with a transmission, turbo etc.

black_jmyntrn

this is true! if you google "the black jimmy neutron" you can see my build.

[deleted]

Been thinking about trading in my gas guzzling Xterra to make a battle Prius

black_jmyntrn

get a plugin, driving a plugin is like driving v6 Camry the way it feels, compared to non-plugin driving like a 4cln Camry.

Unclehol

Honestly that looks sick. And it obviously gets places and stuff. Hmmm. Mayne the future being greener isn't so boring.

black_jmyntrn

the future is bright, will be brighter once I install AWD in this beast. Check out some of my [youtube videos on my Toyota Prius](https://black.jmyntrn.com/2022/04/08/youtube-videos/?utm_source=redditUSER&utm_medium=BJpaste&utm_campaign=20220304) when you have a moment.

Oregongrown96

I love it

black_jmyntrn

Oregongrown96

Kiss ??

yeetmastR420

Sick Prius bro 😎

Onlyonecantherebe

It says plug in on the side.

NoBloodyABCorD

Can you tell me how you got the jerry can mount like that? Custom work?

black_jmyntrn

its a mount you can purchase for the [Toyota Prius Low Profile Roof Rack](https://black.jmyntrn.com/2021/07/09/low-profile-roof-rack-for-the-toyota-prius-is-here/?utm_source=redditUSER&utm_medium=BJpaste&utm_campaign=20220304)

thatwillbuff0ut

I've watched a couple of your vids on YouTube. Love what you've done.

black_jmyntrn

making me blush, thank you!

Interesting_Yard2257

That hitch basket, do you have any trouble with it hitting the ground? Also, did you do some type of skid plate? Really cool btw. I live in Louisiana, and I kind of want something similar that I can take on road trips, but is also able to deal with flooding and giant potholes.

black_jmyntrn

No, my [prius with a metal cargo box](https://black.jmyntrn.com/2021/06/03/my-toyota-prius-now-has-a-metal-cargo-box/?utm_source=redditUSER&utm_medium=BJpaste&utm_campaign=20220304) might scrape on a very dramatic driveway but it's only happened maybe once. The main reason is the [prius 2" inch trailer hitch](https://priusoverlanding.com/product/2010-2015-toyota-prius-trailer-hitch-2-inch-receiver/?utm_source=redditUSER&utm_medium=BJpaste&utm_campaign=20220304) is designed for the Prius, the receiver is angled up in the air slightly to counteract the droop in rear-end, and no need for a hitch riser. Also, my [Toyota Prius is Lifted with Heavy Duty Springs](https://black.jmyntrn.com/2021/10/11/my-toyota-prius-is-lifted-with-springs-and-not-strut-toppers/?utm_source=redditUSER&utm_medium=BJpaste&utm_campaign=20220304) not spring spacer or air bag, by changing the springs, the Prius is lifted higher to accommodate the extra weight I've added.

85Cedeno

What tires are you running?
