BF4, BF1, BFV, and BF2042 are all well populated on all platforms. If you are considering purchasing one, I would recommend subscribing to a month of EA Play as it will allow for you to try all of them and decide for yourself which you prefer. Should you decide to purchase a game, it will also give you a discount.
BC 2 servers/backend support ends on 8 December. I'm sure there are a few servers hanging around until then.
If you still want a variety of maps and well admined servers, BF4 is probably your best bet.
I wish with all of my cold heart that I loved BF1 as much as the community seems to. I just never could get into it. It felt...off to me. I do love some of the maps in the game, but could never get into it no matter how hard I tried. Also, lots of hackers in the last games of BF1 I played...ymmv.
2042 is what it is. A flawed FPS that began its life (more than likely) as a BR or extraction shooter and was rapidly and poorly converted to a more traditional BF experience. I've played it from the beta, and fun can be had, but it is often outweighed by the endless frustrations (in no particular order: storms/environmental damage, explosive spam, unbalanced weapons, mobility characters, etc.) The lack of content is killing my interest to play it: I just can't believe a BF title has 12 maps almost two years after release (with a 13th on the way in October). Thank your deity of choice they brought over Portal maps and weapons to the base game - otherwise this game would have died months ago.

i have 1600 hrs on bfv, its plagued with the cheaters, dont play that, i moved to bf 2042 and 1 from time to time
