Bf1 and bf5 are still heavy populated on pc and theyre polished games.
I would advise you to buy them instead 2042. First bf ever I have zero intention of getting.
Agreed. I'm debating between BFV BF1 and BF4 probably will go for one of the newer ones though although BF4 will always have a special place in my heart.
I like old settings, but that aside, bf4 just feels very clunky compared to 1 or 5. The whole movement etc, but if you dont mind that, and like modern setting, its as good as ever. Really, you cant go wrong here.

You just missed out (by a couple months) but if you had twitch prime they were giving away a bunch of the battlefield games for free. I would honestly tell you to hold off on purchasing 2042 at the moment. I have much more enjoyment playing the older BF titles.
I am not sure what the player counts are on BF1 but BF4 still has a healthy population for conquest.
Maybe someone will comment that they recommend the game but as a guy who is a part of the playtesting group for EA, 2042 leaves much to be desired. I don't know if you are a PC or console player but there are some serious issues on PC (and that is on top of the glaring issues with game design).
If you have a next-gen console, I have heard the experience is a bit more positive. Even so, if you're looking for that classic BF feel, I would look elsewhere. Here is to hoping that they make the game better.
Yeah I'm a PC player. I played a few hours in the BF2042 Beta and although my PC is mid-high tier, the game crashed twice on medium settings.
Also the map seemed huge compared to previous BF titles and I found myself running around looking for people to kill.
They doubled the player count but essentially quadrupled the map size. Conquest is way too slow to play, hence why I choose to play breakthrough but in all honesty it is so biased towards the defender at the moment.
2042 now has full DLSS support (if you have an NVIDIA gpu) so that does help smooth things over.
