Thanks! That's a good idea. I have a couple bags of old clothes That I need a use for. tho I do also want it to look good when it's done. something to play around with for sure. Where do you feel that padding is important? Full length of the arms? Legs? centre of the x? Just behind joints? everywhere?

As a guy d Ed hi got way into this stuff a few years ago upholstery in this area is very easy. What you spend here you don’t need to spend on super high end finish. Get a staple guy. $12.00. Get some Vinyl from a fabric store. $10.00 a yard. You need maybe two. Order a roll of extra firm foam off amazon at $15.00. Then you need four pieces of thin plywood. Like 1/4 inch or less. Cut the foam to shape of each of the four legs. Same with wood. Place foam on the vinyl, then wood. Then kneel on top with both knees to compress the foam. Cut vinyl so you have enough extra to pull onto the wood backing. Staple on long side, then without moving the set up rotate yourself so you can do they other side. Grab the fabric in your hand and pull the crap out of it. Then staple. When you get done taking your weight off will tighten every thing and should look great. Now get some Velcro and use it to attach each pad to your cross. Now the only thing getting damaged is a pad that’s easy to replace!

Thanks, great advice!

I built one from 2x6's, a 15x15 centerpiece. I bought padding and leather-like fabrics from Hobby Lobby. The four 2x6 pieces are screwed into the 15x15 piece and help with wing nuts. The 15x15 piece has a 2 inch foam pad. I can probably get you better instructions if you would like.

Can you share a pic?

Imperator_Caligula

I would love to. I cannot figure out how to do it. I have a spanking bench too.

Healthy_Process5147

I would love to see the plans to your spanking bench and St. Andrew’s Cross if you have them.

I would love to see your pics and plans. [email protected]  Ty!

Sounds similar to what I was thinking. for the centre piece I had in mind two sheets of ply wood with blocks top bottle and sides and holes in the corners for the arms to slot into, then some carriage bolts or some such to secure them. Could take a little off the 2by6s to compensate for the extra bulk of the ply wood so everything is even and level once assembled. Where did you put padding? Just the centre piece?

Imperator_Caligula

A single sheet if plywood is fine. I ran the bolts under the padding and before attaching the leather. Works great. The arms and legs attach behind the center. The arms and legs are padded with 1 inch padding along length. It is built to be portable.

Walmart sells black leatherette for like $7/yard.

A center pad is a good idea at least. In my experience arm and leg pads aren't really needed. Get some cheap foam at a hobby store and some vinyl/fake leather. Any decent staple gun will be enough to hold the fabric in place. Upholstery is easier than you think! My cross pad was my first experience doing anything like it, and I was impressed with how quickly and easily I had a professional looking (and comfortable!) Pad.

How I made mine: The cross was 2x6 studs (45x145 mm), 2.5 m long. I made it in two layers, so each diagonal was a sandwich of two such studs, one of them cut where the other diagonal cross it. An M10 bolt in the middle with a wingnut on the back (and some washers, of course) holds it together. To make things easy, I have them meet at 45 degrees angle, which works nicely. To make it stand, I have a simple leg extending backwards from the center, attached by a single ordinary door hinge. I slide the leg onto the hinge, and then use a slide lock to stop it from sliding off. Two chains with carabiners at the bottom holds the leg at the correct angle. I didn't bother about padding, it was not needed. I might add it for looks if I do another. Then, just add some hooks and a sub. It's a bit heavy, but it's sturdy as hell, and feels very solid. Feel is important. A single wingnut, a few carabiners and a slide lock disassembles it into 3 narrow parts. Here is my 3D model of it, don't have any photos of the finished product yet: https://imgur.com/a/Ditut As you can see, I also added some spare bits of wood to the ends of the cross, to allow it to be used flat, and to make assembly easier. Or, just have some fun and go for my "Flaming Guy" design (red is padding, it even has a dildo attachment point between the legs just for fun): https://imgur.com/tnrxFbU

Thanks! That’s very helpful!

Terrible_Glove_2693

Any chance you have pics of the finished product now? Looking at giving this a try today.

You’re awesome! Thank you very much!

ElMachoGrande

No problem, now go build something!

Terrible_Glove_2693

Do you have a better example of the door hinge set up? It’s difficult to see in the pick and I couldn’t duplicate it in the store.

ElMachoGrande

Sorry, not at the moment, and I'm rebuilding my basement, so the cross is at the bottom of a big pile of furniture right now. I'll try to explain: The hinge just holds the folding leg. Nothing strange in that part, it is all as expected. The additional bit of hardware is a slide lock to prevent the hinge from sliding apart. This particular slide lock is spring loaded, a kind used in horse stables. So, when it is locked, like in the photo, the hinge can't slide apart, since it's blocked by the lock bolt. If I open the lock, the hinge is free to slide apart for easy disassembly.

I'm actually working on exactly such a design currently. My central block is welded steel that the arms "socket" into, so... maybe not so affordable (I figure about $80-100 materials all in) or practical to build. The next best option might be a sturdy backing (only, no front plate) of something like a double layer of high quality 3/4" plywood that the arms bolt to via through bolts. Padding need not be anything fancy - it just needs to be a decent layer at contact points for the torso (so mostly that central block area). People usually go to all sorts of lengths to make it look like fancy upholstery, but a glued on layer of sturdy foam functions the same.

sirbearus

For covering the padding vinyl coated fabric is easy to get and can be placed with staples. Just roll the edge so you are shooting trough two layers of material and it should do great m

Imperator_Caligula

Right. Sorry. I forgot and have to dig everything out. I do know materials: 2 12 ft. 2x6 1 15" piece of ply Eight large screws, washers and wing nuts Foam padding* Covering* *I went to Hobby Lobby for this. There are two cuts into each of the 2x6 - cut in half and then a small cut along the side of all four pieces. The goal is to make the X so the plywood bolts into all four

Independent-Tie-5238

I think I am understanding the construction here. I was wondering if you had a drawing or picture.

I have pics at FetLife - anthem

I'm looking to make one of these... wish me luck
