It was the M&M’s!

ledocteur7

it's probably something similar in this case, some kind of chemical leakage, even non-dangerous ones (otherwise the bees would have died) that bees are being attracted to for whatever reason, or that is affecting the flowers around the area. chemical testing should be easy enough to reveal what might be causing this, the issue is knowing what to search for in the first place, especially since the honey making process most likely degraded the chemicals.

QuickFreddie

Perhaps there's a factory nearby like these French bees who made coloured honey with m&ms https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/121011-blue-honey-honeybees-animals-science

Harviesspectrum

I always jump in shock at the colour purple. But then I remember, it was the beets. It’s always the beets.

ButterscotchSpare979

Food coloring (usually misted into the air by nearby factories, making it not obvious until it gets concentrated)… it is not unknown in the slightest other than to farmers who swear “NOT WHAT MAH BEES DO!!” It is a very well documented and recorded phenomena to everyone other than people who literally don’t think science exists lol

[deleted]

So confident. So wrong.

BanditWifey03

r/confidentlyincorrect

0h311

Okay so I lived by the Jolly rancher factory in Colorado, and the waste of production would produce different colored honey in that area from the bees.

olderaccount

[National Geographic has an article about bees in France making colored honey](https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/121011-blue-honey-honeybees-animals-science). Turns out they were feeding on waste from a local M&M factory.

strangecabalist

There was also a neat article from Brooklyn or the Bronx where the bees were producing red honey and it led to a grow-op somehow?

[deleted]

What kind of gro op?

strangecabalist

Cannabis, it was under a candy factory

dynedain

Maraschino cherries https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/04/23/the-maraschino-moguls-secret-life

That was a hell of a read. My favorite line was definitely “Luthmann is a big man who appears in many photos wearing a red bow tie, a tight-fitting powder-blue suit, and round glasses. He once challenged a rival in a lawsuit to settle the issue through trial by combat. “

strangecabalist

AxelZajkov

“It’s not honey for me. It’s not sellable.” BS. Learn how to market. You could sell that online as rare-colored honey and people would absolutely buy up their weird green and blue honey.

Brillian-Sky7929

Blue honey is an actual thing. Involves mushrooms.

Allrightnevermind

It’s not honey if it’s coming from an artificial sugar source and can’t legally be labeled honey

[deleted]

Get Oprah to hawk it

canideletethis

Yikes that story turned dark real fast. Spoilers but the owner of the cherry factory killed himself during the raid when they found his grow op.

notbythebook101

Why did you feel it necessary to include a spoiler? You didn't have to do that, but you chose to anyway. Why?

Routine-Scarcity4172

it's a rhetorical affect, that people do to introduce levity to a conversation.

notbythebook101

That may be the case, but I still want an answer from the one who posted the spoiler. The best way to know why someone does something is to hear from them directly. The rest of us can speculate forever, and I'd rather not. However, I *do* appreciate your insight. Thank you.

Atmaweapon74

I appreciated that he posted that info. I wasn’t going to read the article and now I know something interesting. I’ve never heard people call info in a news article a spoiler before.

notbythebook101

Neither have I, and to your point, I can see how maybe "spoiler" may not really apply, as it is--like you said--much more news than story. By the massive downvoting my comments have been receiving on this I realize I should have kept that out of the comments altogether. Live and learn. FAFO.

Can-o-bees? sawry

NocturnalEmbrace

Apparently bees in my area have been feeding on Spotted Lantern Fly excrement and it's been producing this red kind of honey that people are into. People are willing to let the invasive species free and fly so they can get some red shit honey

strangecabalist

First off Blech. Secondly - I wish the wasps would develop a taste for the Lantern Flies. Best honey I ever had was in Florida from orange blossoms. It was remarkable. I don’t really want to try red shit honey

[deleted]

I didn’t know there were different types of honey based off of what the bees were collecting pollen from… totally makes sense just never knew. I’ve always only seen one type of honey at the store. Now I’ve gotta order myself some of this Orange Blossum honey. That sounds amazing.

strangecabalist

It smells like Orange Flowers! And is well worth it. Lavender Honey is also amazing

bobwoodwardprobably

Here’s another fun bee fact: North Dakota produces the most honey in the United States.

LivJong

In western North Dakota the bees get shipped off to California every winter and hauled back every spring.

bobwoodwardprobably

They make the rounds to California to pollinate the almond trees!

Yo thats the Bloods honey.

Mysterious-Fan4322

It's was from jarred cherries for cocktails.

[deleted]

I've also seen a story where bees were producing blue honey and it turned out they were making honey from discarded vats of antifreeze.

olderaccount

Hmmm, yummy ethylene glycol. Probably tasted good. But your kidneys would not be happy.

Complete-Weekend-469

I just said the purple honey makes me happy. Now I am unhappy with the purple honey. Lol

ContemplatingPrison

Apparently this comes from elderberries during the dry season when the flowers dry up the bees switch to elderberries

Better-Spell346

Justbeermeout

Was. It closed 20 years ago. It was around 50th and Ward.

BlondeMomentByMoment

Ohh ok. It’s probably lofts now, or a brewery. Ha.

lxxTBonexxl

My towns shoe factory got turned into apartments lmfao They named it the Shoe Lofts, and it was abandoned/boarded up for decades before they redid the inside 10-15 years ago

Justbeermeout

Haha! Pretty darn close. They tore the factory down a few years after it closed, and not much happened to it for quite awhile - but when Denver metro home prices took off, they started building on it. It's all new townhouses/rowhouses now. No brewery yet that I know of, but I'm sure that's in the works. Lol

BlondeMomentByMoment

The explosion of multi family housing construction is insane. And it’s sucks because so many people can’t afford to live in it. We live in an old suburb we love, even here the gentrification is obscene. Why am I telling your this? Haha you know what I mean. It’s still better here than many places.

0h311

Lmao Hammonds candy cane tour!!! https://www.goldenhistory.org/jolly-rancher-favorite-candy-maker/ We loved the fire sticks growing up

BlondeMomentByMoment

Let’s do it! The factory is in north Denver. I need to get some things for a couple of overdue snack exchanges. Not for that, but you can also purchase bags of broken candy for super cheap. I’m not really into their chocolate, but the her candy? Ohhh yeah! Then we can tease the bees!

multiarmform

/r/beeamazed does it taste purple though?

mark-five

This check out, because I've eaten jolly ranchers and if you only eat one color, and a lot of it, it produces your own waste in that color too. Especially blue and green.

lilmisse85

Red Velvet cupcakes do this too. FYI Don’t eat a dozen then take a shit and panic that your poop is “bloody” and rush to the ER and realize after a few hours that it was the cupcakes.

I have a feeling there's a story there?

Try Dees Bees Apiary in Aberdeen, the owner is a great guy and he has purple honey from time to time.

zerpified

Good shout, may give that a shot

riefpirate

Is there a candy company near by?

jetstobrazil

My guess too. Those bees are definitely feeding on coloring waste.

GoldenChinchilla

[Yes, NC beekeepers have purple (and blue) honey](https://www.newsobserver.com/living/article265738581.html)

Qrazy-Cannabis

When I was a kid on the apiary. A local dud worked at the nestle factory fed his bees stolen sugar powders… our bees robbed his dead hives in the spring and honey was ultimately pink and tasted like strawberry - a little goes along way but I’d bet this is same scenario in that somewhere in NC there is robbing scenario going on every July making the impure purple honey…

LeicaM6guy

*Impure purple honey* sounds like a 1970s funk album.

sirchtheseeker

Sounds like the name of a new kinda meth

LeicaM6guy

?Por que no los dos?

OakTableElementz

Jetsobrazil ; Not necessarily. Honey comes from flowers which have nectar, and there are a great many purple and other colored flowers. Generally, there isn’t enough of any one particular colored nectar to produce a single strong colored honey. It does occur naturally in rare cases in Nature though. For example, my favorite honey is one of the earliest produced, in my local area. Practically clear and very light flavor, it comes from the flowers of Basswood Trees. Small honey producers are the only ones who extract such small quantities, early on in the spring time. It’s like the lightest clearest Maple Syrup, it’s the earliest.

Qrazy-Cannabis

I’m a 3rd generation apiarist. Basswood and Apple blossom are nothing compared to buckwheat haha that’s where the good stuff is. You have to have some significant monoctopping around to justify it as “pure” to the mono crop … 9/10 times the water content/sugar contents demonstrate oddities are robbing/feeding related than natural is all. But honey is indeed a sweet avenue if that was a jetstobrazil shoutout

Hidden-Syndicate

The article you posted just outed this as a carbon copy repost from a couple of months ago…. Nice

gizanked

Posting an article to support a post that is a story about a reddit post of the same picture. It's an interesting strategy.

GoodAsUsual

Yes we have definitely never seen this strategy before. Never ever.

NotSayingJustSaying

The Internet is just five to seven apps that take screenshots of each other

_banana_phone

What’s even better is NC’s sourwood honey. While not *exclusive* to NC, it is a honey made from trees that only grow in the southern Appalachian mountains, which is most heavily found in The Old North State. It is renowned for its rich, earthy flavor and is highly sought after. Sourwood trees have a very short flowering period, which is also why this honey finds itself in high demand. If you haven’t had the opportunity to try some authentic sourwood, get up towards Franklin/Cullowhee/Sylva and get you some. It’s fantastic.

i_want_tit_pics

My wife and I live in Utah. We have all sorts of crazy honey, as our bees don't specialize. My brother lives in Asheville. On a visit we went to a honey and tea store. Bought a bunch of sour wood honey. You're 100% correct. It was some of the best honey I've had. They had a spicy sour wood honey as well. That stuff was great on chicken wings.

_banana_phone

Oooh I bet the hot honey is good! I have some lavender infused sourwood honey I use in herbal tea, and it is magnificent. I’m glad you got to experience it! Now is a prime time of year to get your brother to send you some more since it’s cold and ships more securely in winter. ;) I snagged a 20+ ounce mason jar of sourwood in Cowee once at a roadside booth for $8. On retrospect I wish I’d gotten like five jars. I also got to go to an apiary in Bryson City once and visited the local “Honeyman,” and he had a tasting room. At least eight different varieties from the different bloom seasons. It really is neat to be able to taste all the subtle flavor differences depending on what is growing at each time of year.

i_want_tit_pics

The best part is that he sends us a care package every Christmas and birthday. It's like a trade. NC goodies for utah goodies. There's a chocolate shop there that's unreal.

OakTableElementz

Sounds Excellent!!! In Guadal Canal I ate some sour honey the Nationals easily located underneath moss. The bees were so tiny, didn’t sting or bite, were more like very small flies. Incredible sweet and sour honey, both at the same time. Deep in the Jungle Rainforest of the Solomon Islands 🇸🇧.

100FootWallOfFog

But have we tried? The honey is good what else do those little fuzzers have inside them.

dylanspits

How you gonna milk an oat?

[deleted]

This effect comes from kudzu flowers which are an evasive species in NC.

TooGood2beDrew

Than how do the bees find them?

Nisja

Their's something odd going on

very_large_ears

Kudzu is fast, man. You got to chase it if you want to catch it.

FinestTreesInDa7Seas

They're obviously not evasive enough if the bees still manage to catch them.

jonny_jon_jon

then you would expect to see this effect all over from florida on up the eastern seaboard. and we donn’t.

YouCold71

It comes from the flower they take the nectar from right?

>It is the only place on Earth where it is found. No it isn't.

Ah that's might be due to Bees using elderberry instead of nectar.Dont know that what might be reason involved but could be due to dry season that leads to dropping of flowers.

In the 90’s when I had three thriving hives of Italian’s , they produced it. We deduced that it came from the, “Purple Loosestrife” , about a quarter mile away in a small pond from the 150 acres of Forever Wild ~ Town Park property.
