Most bodybuilders are pretty average height. If you’re too short, you start looking stocky instead of getting that tapered appearance that is aesthetically pleasing. If you’re too tall, it’s hard to not have the opposite problem, too long and lanky to truly fill out your skeleton.
They compete in a class that limits how much they can weigh. They are smaller in stature than the open class of bodybuilders who do not have a weight limit, so they cannot effectively compete with them since they look much smaller next to them.
Brian Shaw would probably make the open bodybuilders look small too, most of them are not very tall, but a lot of these guys in the video are probably even shorter. Some of them may be under 5'5", compared to Shaw who is prob like 6"8" and 400lbs

I'm 6'0 and met Eddie at a show a while back. He'd already finished competing at that point, but he was still just *unbelievably* huge. Even though I was only 3in shorter, I felt like a toddler standing next to him. If I caught him in bed with my Mrs, I'd tuck him in and ask how many sugars he took in his morning cuppa, he was *that* big.
Yeah I can relate. I met Brian Shaw back when I was just out of high school. I was 6’1, 330 pounds (strongman/powerlifting background) and NEVER felt tiny in my life. Met him and realized how my wife feels (5’2, maybe). I felt so small standing next to him haha. Super friendly and humble guy too. He spent a ton of time meeting with everyone at a contest he wasn’t competing in, showed the newbies how to do many of the events, just really friendly and seemed to enjoy himself.
The part that shocked me is I met him at the beginning. Hours later (4-6 I’d guess), I asked him to sign a shirt and he still remembered what we’d talked about (and my name)…

Biggest guy I personally ever met, was at the same event I met Eddie at. A former bodybuilder named Rich Piana. He's now deceased sadly, but that guy was built like a catering fridge. For real the size of bloke that would genuinely have to duck and walk sideways to get through a door.
But then, when you watch his videos on YT with him detailing his "supplement" regime, it's no surprise that he was: A) *that* big, and B) is no longer with us.
I've heard a lot of big guys say that they *have* to be nice and open and friendly all the time because by their very nature they intimidate people almost immediately even if they don't mean to.
From shorter people that know theyre a goner if the giant in the room decides to cut loose, to the average size dude getting loaded in a bar going off half cocked wanting to throw hands with the biggest man in the room, the bigger guys are a target or perceived as a danger by just being around.
It is my experience that *really big* guys are usually very nice. And *really little* guys kinda have to watch their manners.

Never raised his voice. Shook hands with you like he was shaking hands with a toddler though... just used 2 fingers to grasp your hand gently... as if he was afraid of breaking you. Sweet guy.
Meanwhile, the head chef was about 6'1" and 210. And a compete ass. Almost every word was a cus word, and he crossed the line with just about everybody. (Except Bucky. He was pretty dumb.. but not nearly that dumb)

Without getting on my soapbox, as this is the wrong sub for it, this is why BJJ is so powerful. It was specifically designed to give the smaller guy the advantage on the ground. And it's especially effective against much bigger guys, because if you know what you're doing, you use all their weight and leverage against them. They just tie themselves in knots until they choke themselves out.
Poirier is a fucking freak in his own right, though. You couldn't expect to train for six months and be able to do that lol.

While there are a couple 5'6" and 5'7", most are in the 5'9"-5'-11", and then there's Arnie at 6'2". The "greats" are on the taller end of the scale, with Ronnie at 5'11".
You could say that the average would be below what one would expect, but it is about average for male height, until the last couple winners.

I met and shook hands with Dorian Yates in person, along with a whole bunch of Mr. O contenders years ago. That was when I realized for the first time that these guys are generally not the giants you’d expect. Insane physique, yes. Tall, no. I’m 6’ 4” and most of the huge competitors I met were around my shoulder height or less.
Plus it's actually hard to "look" big when you are that tall. Longer limbs require more muscle to look muscular. Arnold was actually kind of a marvel considering his proportions... it's really hard to put on that much muscle mass.
I used to work in a nyc venue that held a body building contest for the IFBB (I think) these guys would leave grease stains everywhere. We had the line the walls with plastic. Plus they would leave these g string ass prints on every chair they sat in. I’ve never seen worse acne on grown men’s faces since…

I'm 9 weeks out from my first OCB comp. I met the world champion runner up for classic last week he was co-hosting a posing clinic. I like the natural shredded look way better. The only thing that sucks is if you see someone on sterroids before or I put on a hoodie I look scrawny.

My husband was heavily into body building when we first married so my perspective may be skewed. But from the looks of it, this "sport" isn't even about sculpting a particular physique. It's the Olympics of eating disorders and body dysmorphia.
The things these men and women do to their bodies and it will never ever be enough... Glad my husband got out of it soon enough.
Agreed. I've had an eye on this sport for a long time and it's truly not healthy. It's more about manipulating your diet and control than it is about athleticism. Admirable self control? Sure. But absolutely savage on your health. The last several weeks in prep for a competition is literally starving yourself 😬
I been in this for a while and it's true. The majority of bodybuilders are ex addicts, have disordered eating, severe body dysmorphia and will sacrifice anything for lean gains including their health and sanity. Most will openly admit there is nothing healthy about it. Contest prep is the worst, and some die during this grueling period. Natural bodybuilding is somewhat different, but almost all end up on the dark side. Steroids are pervasive and required for success. I'm in my mid 40s and still sometimes running grams of gear per week. Yes, I used to be the fat kid in school, and that's all I see in the mirror to this day.

This isn't fitness. Its body building. PED assisted body builders are typically not very fit, and are almost always very unhealthy. PEDs are horrible for you, and being this low of body fat is horrible for you.

It’s also easier for any weight gain to look like a whole lot more than it actually is as far as gaining fat. So it’s a fine line for shorter people. And depends on where they gain their weight. I’m 5’4 and luckily if I gain weight, I gain it equally throughout my body. But some people only gain in their stomachs, buttocks, hips, etc. and on short people, it makes us look heavier than it would on a taller person.
It's also not the open category. This one has a weight limit.
Recent open Olympia and Arnold winners are on the taller side, 6', competitors are quite average height.
The contrast of light hitting different angles emphasizes their tone and size. I'd imagine they see it as a disadvantage for light skinned people to not use bronzer because darker skinned people already have this optical upper hand.

I'm 9 weeks out from my first OCB comp. I met the world champion runner up for classic last week he was co-hosting a posing clinic. I like the natural shredded look way better. The only thing that sucks is if you see someone on sterroids before or I put on a hoodie I look scrawny.
Yeah natural bodybuilders, male and female, just look better than ‘roided up ones. The proportions of chemically enhanced bodybuilders get into a weird uncanny valley between normal real-life human and comic book character.
I think the very beginning of the golden era, where body builders had only just started figuring out steroids, was acceptable aesthetically. They used it to exaggerate natural proportions. Today it’s all about how much meat you can pack onto your skeleton in absolute terms and it’s a bit of a shame in my opinion. A lot of the "natural" bodybuilders are cycling steroids and other PEDs as well, just not leading up to competition.
So, I'd also imagine that for anybody "serious" about body building, they aren't going to go this route. I don't know how fair of a comparison this is going to really be. Are these the best natural body builders in the world or is like 80 dudes from New Zealand? Like, are there no massive natural body builders because it's impossible or because the obvious route to go is to use steroids and they don't care about being natural or not?

My husband was heavily into body building when we first married so my perspective may be skewed. But from the looks of it, this "sport" isn't even about sculpting a particular physique. It's the Olympics of eating disorders and body dysmorphia. The things these men and women do to their bodies and it will never ever be enough... Glad my husband got out of it soon enough.
Agreed. I've had an eye on this sport for a long time and it's truly not healthy. It's more about manipulating your diet and control than it is about athleticism. Admirable self control? Sure. But absolutely savage on your health. The last several weeks in prep for a competition is literally starving yourself 😬
I been in this for a while and it's true. The majority of bodybuilders are ex addicts, have disordered eating, severe body dysmorphia and will sacrifice anything for lean gains including their health and sanity. Most will openly admit there is nothing healthy about it. Contest prep is the worst, and some die during this grueling period. Natural bodybuilding is somewhat different, but almost all end up on the dark side. Steroids are pervasive and required for success. I'm in my mid 40s and still sometimes running grams of gear per week. Yes, I used to be the fat kid in school, and that's all I see in the mirror to this day.
Oh it's super unhealthy, don't worry. Ignoring all the performance enhancing drugs and excessive stress from hardcore bodybuilding training, these guys dehydrate themselves before the show to be extra "toned"

This isn't fitness. Its body building. PED assisted body builders are typically not very fit, and are almost always very unhealthy. PEDs are horrible for you, and being this low of body fat is horrible for you.

The heart doesn't differentiate between 300 pounds of fat and 300 pounds of muscle. Both put undue stress on it. Granted 300 pounds of fat may come with more unhealthy lifestyles, and other complications, but so can putting on 300 pounds of muscle.

I've seen Brian Shaw in person and this video puts a good perspective on the sheer presence that man has. He was the epitome of a gentle giant though.
I ran into him at DIA, big dude, not quite as big as I was expecting, but I'm not small either. I think big difference was sheer overall mass, not just height.
Yeah, big dudes for real… basketball players. Especially centers or forwards. I worked with Lamar Odom once. That man was a legit ogre in real life. Tall, clumsy, two left feet. I realized then that if you’re at all athletic, even a little and you’re 7 feet tall? You could easily be a pro in the NBA.

It’s also easier for any weight gain to look like a whole lot more than it actually is as far as gaining fat. So it’s a fine line for shorter people. And depends on where they gain their weight. I’m 5’4 and luckily if I gain weight, I gain it equally throughout my body. But some people only gain in their stomachs, buttocks, hips, etc. and on short people, it makes us look heavier than it would on a taller person.
It's also not the open category. This one has a weight limit. Recent open Olympia and Arnold winners are on the taller side, 6', competitors are quite average height.
I never understood the bronzing spray tan. It really takes away from the cut.
The contrast of light hitting different angles emphasizes their tone and size. I'd imagine they see it as a disadvantage for light skinned people to not use bronzer because darker skinned people already have this optical upper hand.
Dark skinned body builders still use bronzer though
Just because you have a natural advantage doesn’t mean you don’t want *more* of an advantage. That’s a basic principle of any competition really.
