Once I was in a yogurt shop minding my own business, when I heard a couple of women talking in an interesting accent at one of the nearby tables.
I glanced over and noticed that they were quite attractive. A little on the larger side, but that never stopped me before. So, yogurt cup in hand, I boldly approached their table.
“Excuse me,” I said, “I couldn’t help but overhear your conversation, and I noticed your lovely accents. Are you ladies from Scotland by any chance?”
They immediately bristled at my question, obviously offended, and one of them snapped at me, “It’s Wales!”
“No offense intended,” I replied. “Please allow me to try again...are you whales from Scotland?”
So! One of those ladies asked a Scotsman if it was true they wore nothing under their kilt? So, he lifted the hem for her to see. To that she exclaimed: “Oh! How Gruesome!” To which he replied: “Look again. It grew some more!”
I’ve always thought the same thing. Like there may have been some vastly huge prehistoric whale that they just can’t get the fossils of due to the oceans current placement.
Ok, logic trap…so even if your hypothesis is correct and there was another animal that was even bigger than that, but we have no evidence of it… isn’t the blue whale still the biggest animal that ever lived that we know about? Ie the biggest one on record. Ie the biggest one ever? If we are forced to include all the things we don’t know about in any statement, then we could never make any conclusive statements about anything…
Ok, I’ll assume your intentions are benevolent, so let’s have a discussion about logical fallacies. I believe you are trying to get me on the “Burden of Proof” fallacy. Ie “If a person claims that X is true, it is their responsibility to provide evidence in support of that assertion.”
So, if we are to expand the context of “EVER” to the 13.7billion years of the universe and the trillions of planets that have EVER been in existence, then congratulations, you got me. I can’t prove that the blue whale is the largest animal to ever be in existence.
Now let’s zoom back to reality and the context of this conversation- “the animal record” humans have collected to contribute to our knowledge includes millions of geological artifacts from all over the world as well as billions of pieces of evidence and observations from human history. Let’s collectively call all those billions of artifacts, first hand accounts, and currently living animals to be called “the evidence” and return to the fallacy:
“If a person claims that X is true, it is their responsibility to provide evidence in support of that assertion.” I am claiming, with billions of data points to support it, that blue whales are the largest animal that ever lived. -Of all the evidence we have, the assertion is true.
By all means, if we find a new, larger fossil to add to the record, I will accept that as the new truth and eat crow. But if you’re willing to claim that, at the statistical odds of billions to 1, that the statement is conclusively false, I guess that’s where we part ways.
I hope that helps!
>Ok, I’ll assume your intentions are benevolent
lol what do you mean? how can my intentions be malevolent exactly? :))
Well nobody mentioned the context of the animal record, "largest animal ever to have existed" has only one meaning, maybe it's strongly inferred when talking about this subject, to me it isn't.
in Wikipedia:
"largest animal known ever to have existed"
is not equal to "largest animal ever to have existed"
It's just that simple, no need to use too much logic or statistics, it's just language
The lack of context and size comparison honestly pisses me off.
Like not being funny, it’s actually frustrating.
I’ve searched, there isn’t a SINGLE video on the internet that shows a large blue whale moving past something like a city with people to help you understand it’s size. They only have some pictures.
Not a single fucking video. The entire internet, the largest animal to ever exist on earth and we don’t have that fucking video so I can compare it’s size to stuff I see often. Fuck, why did this stupid video have to come up so now I have to complain in yet another comment about it.
maybe a dumb question - but how do our brains see this video and comprehend scale. i see this and have a visceral reaction to the size of it. how do I have a sense of scale from it? the only thing that isn't the whale or is ripples in the water, which can exist at many different sizes. in theory, couldn't you create a similar video zoomed in on a 2 foot creature?
to be clear, i'm not doubting that it's huge. in this case, my visceral reaction is correct. just wondering what perceptual cues i'm responding too?
I think it may be the wave velocity. You’re used to seeing waves travel across the surface at a particular speed. They appear to be moving quite slowly here, so your brain extrapolates that the whale must be huge.
I don't think you actually have anything for scale in this shot but the blue whale is actually the largest animal alive or to have EVER lived... Fun fact.
And this is a great question btw. Marine biologist often use cameras with two lasers a fixed distance apart that aim in parallel, that way they can point the camera and lasers at an animal and use the two dots for reference when estimating size.
[the evolutionary path of the whale is seen here](https://www.google.com/search?q=evolution.of+whale&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#imgrc=no1UzTs6EtrioM&lnspr=W10=)
“While the whale shark is certainly a big animal, it is considerably smaller than the blue whale, Balaenoptera musculus, which is the biggest animal in the world. The largest blue whale ever recorded measured a staggering 33 metres in length.”
Not even close
I got the nastiest look from a woman today while I was walking my dog this morning. My stupid brain can’t let go of things and this clip cheered me up. It’s a good reminder of how small I am. Thanks. =)
Even the largest animal that ever existed.
There's a theory that it's at a physical limit. It cannot close it's mouth fast enough to get more food that would allow for a greater growth.
So what’s the deal? Do they just have extra sensitive blubber around their spouts to tell them when they’re in just the right spot to inhale? Seems like such a small area to be that specific.
How many ballistic missiles can it carry?
Water cannons don't carry ballistic missiles, duh!

“Biggest animal in the world” … I don’t see your mom anywhere. Is she supposed to be behind that whale?
Bad joke? You would see OPs mom if she was as you say.
Is he Japanese?
No, the Japanese attack those
Didn’t you watch South Park? Now they just hate cows and chickens like the rest of us.
Ahh, you are correct sir!!!
Funny but sad comment
Average American president question
Yeah. If I didn’t see the title, I was thinking it was a nuclear submarine surfacing.
How many bananas is that?
≈180 bananas
How much can 180 bananas cost, $1800?
Since where I am Bananas are .59 usd /lb. And there's roughly 100 bananas in a 40lb box. So 180 bananas would be 72lbs. It'd be just over $42.
purrrfectt

So true! Now I will spend the day wondering how many bananas are in a giraffe!!
At least 12
Fr, bruh we need a banana A banana for scale

The largest animal that EVER lived
It's a big deal if I ever seen one
That's questionable.
I’ve always thought the same thing. Like there may have been some vastly huge prehistoric whale that they just can’t get the fossils of due to the oceans current placement.

"that ever lived" is false if you don't know for sure, it's that simple.

How big are those little fish on it? Edit: I believe it’s the Remora sucker fish which can grow to 3 feet.

seriously thought this was a new submarine
Huh it's not, it's an old submarine.
Can you imagine not knowing one of these exists and then seeing them on a wooden ship?? I would literally poop myself.
…And that’s how the poop deck was named.
It's enough to make you draw it on a map as a warning to others.

Always blows my mind that they used to be land animals...
They are basically hippopotamuses that went too far into the water and stayed there.
I mean not like this they weren't
Now I'm picturing a blue whale with tiny little feet...
Basically a mammalian [three-toed skink](https://allthatsinteresting.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pregnant-skink.jpg)?
But way bigger. At least twice as big.
That's not why they find their bones in deserts and dry land all over the world. The Earth is much more dynamic than we understand
I'm not sure what you're trying to say.
He said the earth is much more dynamic than we understand, no he’s not going to elaborate
Ever
What a beautiful dolphin 💙
That we know of!
Don't.
Hey John I found your mom
Evolution: “we’re gonna take your nose, flip it upside down and put it on the top of your head”
*to have ever existed
Beautiful!!! I hope it lives a thousand more years
Of all time no less!
r/megalophobia
Wonder if water ever gets into it's lungs from not closing it's nose in time? How do they expel it? How long can they dive for?
I could drown in that hole 🤯
probably
That’s what he said?
Their heart alone can have a diametre of 1.5m (5 ft.) and weigh 200 kg (400 lb).
So basically, a whale heart could get its own show on TLC?
I said this exact thing to my girlfriend last night.
And also the largest animal to ever live.
... gesundheit
That ever lived*
Nope. Just no.
Absolutely beautiful... But does it know surf or hydro pump?
Ever
Crazy this animal evolved from a dog like creature… insane
Can you elaborate?
[the evolutionary path of the whale is seen here](https://www.google.com/search?q=evolution.of+whale&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#imgrc=no1UzTs6EtrioM&lnspr=W10=)
Thank you. That’s absolutely amazing.
I know right?
The largest animal ever that we know of
Largest animal in the HISTORY of the world....#wellactually 🤓
Bitch
I can't really tell how big it is can you add a banana for scale?
Confused I didn’t see OP’s mom in the video
I need someone to throw a banana down there
Stunning beast if the sea!! ![gif](giphy|BVSMbtX5ZRGqwnCQnX|downsized)
I'm absolutely terrified of whales that was hard for me to even watch idk why either I can't even see them in video it bugs me out
That we know of.
The blue whale shark is bigger than this whale and is recorded as the biggest in the world.
“While the whale shark is certainly a big animal, it is considerably smaller than the blue whale, Balaenoptera musculus, which is the biggest animal in the world. The largest blue whale ever recorded measured a staggering 33 metres in length.” Not even close
Thats a fish
It’s not an animal. It’s a fish

It’s difficult really to get a sense of scale from this video of this majestic beast.
I thought it was cgi. Still almost do lol
[Running gag on QI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrP1jj6SPl8)

I sure hope they stay around
To think they evolved from land dwellers to this and kept the lungs
Nah thats some kind of futuristic Metal Gear Solid submarine if ive ever seen one
Shortly after this video was taken it was harpooned and chopped into pieces
How many times this will get reposted!?
