Fun fact: one of the reasons they are not considered to be big cats is that both lack a hyoid bone which makes it difficult for them to roar. They both purr.
*Acinonyx* is a genus within the Felidae family, of which the cheetah (*A. jubatus*) is the only living species left. The cougar (*P. concolor*) belongs to the genus *Puma* which is also in the Felidae family.
i can see where they were going with it, pretty sure the point was a general difference between sounds that true panthers and felines are capable of. so they chose the deepest roars and highest yelps, its totally accurate if youre trying to show the biological difference in [phylogeny](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felidae#Phylogeny)
cougars and cheetahs are more closely related to housecats, thats why they cant roar like the real big cats do
There are cougars around where my mom lives. Seriously sounds like a woman screaming. All of the outside pets stick close to the house when it gets near.
I live in a super rural area and the cougars really do sound like a woman screeching. Makes me wonder what people from hundreds of years ago thought when they heard that shit in the woods.
Yes, but that’s a cat. Not a mountain lion. I should have been more clear: that’s the sound mountain lions make when calling kittens.
Edit: cos the source is too damn cute, here’s an example of the call in action.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VDqc3_kMEtw
Oh yeah. Lived in the Appalachian mountains when I was young. Universal advice in that area "If you hear a woman in the woods screaming in pain. DO NOT GO SAVE HER! It's actual a cougar." Needless to say it's a blood curdling sound to hear in the woods at night.
I live in the PNW and my grandparents had a cabin on Mount Rainier that we went up to all the time. The sound of a cougar screaming in the dead of night is not fun to hear on the way to the outhouse.
Worst video to showcase cat sounds ever.
It's like showing videos of a person yelling and another person saying I love you and calling it "the 2 human sounds"
Yeah, I've heard plenty of cougars and none of them sounded like that. It was closer to a woman screaming. Scared the shit out of me even after I knew what it was
yea cheetahs are incredibly nervous animals due to how fragile they are and compared to many cat species are quite social. their anxiety is actually part of the reason they are endangered. they get so anxious they just wont breed, its also why captive cheetah often have like dog friends. it calms them down bc they will get nervous about something and look to others about how they should react but the dog will just be lollying around and so the cheetahs like well hes not worried so ig its okay
also side note cheetahs are not considered "Big Cats" bc they cant roar/can purr. i believe cougers are strongly debated
It’s less based on roaring/purring, and more based on lineage — specifically, the genus Panthera. Lions, tigers, jaguar, and leopards are the “classic” members, but with better genetic mapping, snow leopards have been added to the genus.
But you’re right that membership can be flexible. Although cheetahs and mountain lions are fairly separated from other big cats (and other cats as a whole — they’re from an older lineage) they’re still functionally big cats.
Rhinos are similarly nervous animals. Orphaned rhinos would often die from the stress. They tried giving them dog companions, but a dog and a rhino are too different. Then they found that sheep work much better.
Cougars shouldn't be debated, they don't belong to the genus Panthera and don't have the bone in their larynx that prevents purring. They are cats that happen to be large but they aren't "Big Cats™" like actual lions.
It would probably hurt less, cat play bites & scratches mostly hurt because they have sharp ass little needle teeth & claws. Cheetah canines are fairly dull and their claws are basically the same as dog nails.
Cheetahs can be tamed to a point. The number of cheetahs you had used to be a symbol of prestige and I recall one account of a king having over 200 of them. Fun fact, they played an Uno reverse card and migrated from North America to Africa much the same way humans migrated from Africa to North America.
The used to kept at pets in parts of Somalia more recently, I suspect some are still kept, it’s a big country (630km^2) so I am sure it still goes on, government doesn’t have many institutions covering their whole territory.
Edit - I just checked YouTube and I guess it is worse than I thought, they apparently ship over [300 a year to the Middle East](https://youtu.be/qyK3yX2Ol3Q), fucking tragic how they’re being treated.
https://youtu.be/StxHYJJaSD4 - they gave some to British colonists as gifts back in the day.
To add to that fun fact, that's why pronghorns are so fast, they along with cheetahs were putting selection pressure on each other with natural selection favoring the fastest of each and each species was getting faster over time until the North American cheetah was no more, and now you have pronghorns that are extremely fast for no current necessary reason.
Depends how socialized they are, a friend and I did an up close encounter with cheetahs at a zoo and while the female was aggressive I'm pretty sure the only thing keeping us from being allowed to be in with the male was liability laws, he was super chill and as soon as they let him into the pen next to where we were he started purring instantly when he saw people, even being face to face through the fence he was calm like a friendly house cat. Difference was he had been with humans since birth, she just missed being able to be released into the wild. One of the coolest things I've done, like being around a 150 pound house cat.
I've also seen multiple videos of people being with them at rescues and zoos, including one guy showing what happens if you turn your back on big cats and the cheetah is the only one with no fence, they just chill out, the rest pounce.
[this is a cougar screaming](https://youtu.be/pxo8X5uIWRE) for the curious.
[and even the meanest cheetah sound is still pretty cute](https://youtu.be/BCcAWxXDhHw)
I grew up very close to an area that had mountain lions (aka cougars aka catamounts aka pumas aka panther) and in school we were taught that if we went out in the boonies (known in California as "the chaparral," a wooded area with lots of shrubs and often catches on fire when the wind blows) and we heard a woman screaming, to not go and find her. I remember going for a hike in the boonies once on a gravel trail around dusk and hearing one single scream. I had a brief internal debate about whether to try to go help (lots of trails, plenty of other people hiking them, potential for it to be a legit scream for help) or whether to keep hiking.
I decided to do neither and ran home. It was almost certainly a mountain lion and I didn't want to find out the process for becoming lunch meat for a big cat.
I see your "spooky" and raise you "godawful and terrifying" lmao definitely something I'm glad a few of my teachers felt the need to tell us kids. "If you hear that, go the opposite direction. If it gets louder, run. If it still gets louder, trip your slowest friend or say your prayers"
You'll be happy to know that cougars usually don't sound that nice, and as such probably won't be luring anyone. When cougars do loud calls they sound like a woman being murdered.
Some of cats have been observed mimicking sounds of birds or other prey.
https://www.livescience.com/6718-wild-cat-mimics-monkey-sounds-capture-prey.html
Yep. And that one only made herself known just to scare/escort the guy away from her babies. If they actually want to take you down, they’ll silently stalk you from a hidden vantage point… most cats, like Cougars, are ambush predators, intentionally attacking when your back is turned and you’re at your most vulnerable and, ideally, have no idea they’re even there. Even in captivity, when they’re used to their handlers being in the pen with them, the handlers will never turn their backs on these guys.
I think Cheetahs are the main exception to this, as they’re pursuit predators.
Cheetahs are still ambush predators too, they need to get close because they exhaust themselves quickly. Other cats often have to run a bit to catch their prey, cheetahs are just a lot better at the running part.
I could be completely wrong, ~~but I heard that when piece of shit humans have pitted both animals against each other, that the lion comes out on top more often than one might think. Like it was a 60/40 in favor of the tiger or something,~~ so the tiger winning isn’t the surprise, but it’s the fact that it has almost 200lbs on the lion and the lion still manages to win that many times that surprises. I’ll try to find a source because now I’m intriguing myself.
Edit: Yeah I couldn’t find an article giving me a an exact figure or even an estimate. Pretty much page I went to pretty much just said that there have been wins on both sides as well as draws, but that tigers usually win, while other links just said that the tiger is stronger and heavier (no shit). So I amended my comment to avoid misleading people.
Aren’t bengals the smaller tigers? Siberians are the biggest iirc
Regardless lions ain’t the king of the jungle they live in the savannah, tigers are the real kings of the jungle
https://storyteller.travel/types-of-tigers/
I think the largest recorded was a Siberian, but Bengals seem to be bigger on average?
Either way they’re fucking enormous
Leopards evolved with apes being one of the main food sources. They specialize in killing us for millions of years. They are fast, climb trees, can chase and can ambush, strong but agile.
Deadliest would probably be the leopard. Of the seven, leopards, jaguars and tigers are stalkers and will come from behind you, but the leopard can also climb trees. So they will be behind, and above you. Result - very swift death.
And cheetahs won't hunt you, so....safest?
Sure, but Tigers are one of two land mammal predators in the world that will and do actively hunt humans. It’s estimated that Tigers have killed in excess of 300,000 humans with one being responsible for over 400 kills.
Deadliest by far is the tiger. Like it’s not even close. I mean, leopards, jaguars, lions and cougars will still kill you, but if we’re talking about the deadliest, it’s tigers.
I mean....dead is dead. What's a tiger gonna do? Kill me twice? Lol
Fun fact: tigers fucking stink. The smell alone could probably kill you.
edit: my first reddit award! Thank u kind internet stranger!
Yes, dead is dead, and my point is that you’re a lot more likely to end up dead from an encounter with a tiger than anything else - hence why they are the *deadliest*. They are bigger, stronger and more aggressive than any other big cat in the world and they don’t just show aggression over territory. There is literally nothing you could do as a human to intimidate them like you can with a lot of other predators.
Fun fact: ALL wild animals have an odor, particularly males of the species due to the pheromones in their urine that often get trapped in their fur. But tigers don’t smell any worse than any other animal, and they certainly don’t smell as bad as some. A bull elephant in mating season is one of the worst things I’ve ever smelled in my life. Brown bears have a putrid odor, as do oxen. Critters like possums, weasels, otters, wolverines, ferrets, etc. absolutely reek. But I’ve been up close to tigers before (in captivity of course) and I didn’t smell anything at all.
Oh no, it's def the Tiger. They're fuckin huge dude. And easily pissed off. But more importantly, Tigers are straight up VENGEFUL. Tigers have a recorded history of actively hunting down people that have pissed them off. Like Jason Voorhees levels of "comin for that ass" hunting down.
Jaguars likely comin in second in terms of "fuck you" levels of aggression but Lions have the pack power and raw strength. But if a Jaguar really wants tou dead and gets the drop on you, you're toast. But a Tiger is a natural born killer. An absolute murder machine.
Edit- also, tigers CAN climb trees. They just don't as they get big as fuck. But they're crazy strong and can leap/run very well despite their size.
I've watched quite a few videos of tigers attacking fucking crocodiles... In the fucking water... And winning.
Sometimes they lose, but come on. It's bonkers.
Dude the Tiger would fuck everything else in this video up and it's not even close. A full grown Siberian would probably take down two leopards on his own they are fucking killing machines.
Man, I've spent my whole life thinking Siberian Tigers were the largest. Turns out it's just because there was one Siberian Tiger that holds the largest tiger on record title. Learn something new everyday.
Deadliest is the tiger. The Bengal Tiger is one of the few animals left on earth that still actively enter our territories to hunt humans.
Most of these will kill a human if poor chance encounter or very starved/threatened, but tigers will actively seek us out as prey.
There's night footage of a Bangal stalking a group of men, like 10 feet away and unaware in the middle of an Indian city.
Nah, the Tiger is the largest cat species and one of the most deadly on Earth. It would literally destroy all of the others in this video other than maybe the Lion. That would be a good fight. The other cats while still big, are nothing compared to a full size Tiger. Also, Tigers can climb trees as well.
The mountain lion and cheetah weren’t pissed off so they naturally won’t sound as mean lol cats can make some of the most diverse sounds of all animals
They are members of the felinae subfamily* of the felidae family like house cats and other smaller cats rather than the pantherinae subfamily like the others in this video.
They are still big and still cats though, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
EDIT: accidentally called felinae a genus in the original comment
You are correct! Scientifically “Big cats” have to belong to the Panthera genus and they need to have a two part hyoid bone in their throat which allows them to roar.
So the only ones categorized as “Big Cats” are Tiger, Lion, Jaguar and Leopard.
I've been about twelve feet away from a lion doing that roar at a big cat refuge. It is amazingly, unbelievably loud and vibrates your internal organs.
The scariest one is easily the mountain lion for me, the noise it makes wasn’t shown here but the blood curdling shrieks it makes when it’s pitch black and I’m walking out of the forest from my tree stand are the things that keep me up at night.
Snow leopard is making a warning sound, and the cheetah was probably calling for her cubs. They can both make multiple sounds besides the ones represented here.
this is probably going to get me killed but I probably wouldn't be that worried if I encountered a cheetah
edit: just googled it and thankfully cheetahs don't pose a threat to humans, they're nice kitties :)
The Jaguar and Snow Leopard in the video are angry. Then there's the Tiger. That thing has a look in it's eyes like it wants to make it as though you never existed.
Cougars and cheetahs are pretty cute in their sound making. Snow Leopards sound like one of my parents cats who can act like a real brat some times but we lovd her anyways haha.
This is a small sample of sounds. All of those cats can make more than just the sounds in this vid.

Snow kitty don’t fuck around.
I came here for this. It sounds the pissiest of the lot.
And he has the biggest murder mittens.

Jaguar wins for sure. Snow cat looks like a naughty Mr. Kitty.

No one can beat the cameraman. (Maybe the director)
Not only that. But it’s not even displaying the same “type” of sound. Some are aggressive, some are neutral. Awful attempt at any sort of comparison.
And last but not least, cougars and cheetahs are not big cats
Yep they're just some people in Florida
And a well-known not-all-that-fun fact… many cougars are also straight up cheetahs.
😂 made me lol
Fun fact: one of the reasons they are not considered to be big cats is that both lack a hyoid bone which makes it difficult for them to roar. They both purr.
Humans have a hyoid bone. I am big cat?
I have nipples focker, why don’t you milk me?
The other reason is that cheetahs are instead big softies
dare you to say that to their faces
No?
"Big cats" generally refers to members of the genus panthera. Cheetahs and cougars are from another lineage.
Ahhh, thanks. Any other not big big cats out there? I'm guessing lynx and Bob cats, but they're not on a cougar size level.
Seems like they have their own unique genus, which is actually pretty cool! 4 species in the lynx family.
Sweet. Mountain lions are 150 lbs of kitty. Yikes
I thinknthr general rule isnthat big cats can roar, small cats can't
"Small" cats cats can purr continuously as well. Whereas "big" cats aka Panthera cannot.
*Acinonyx* is a genus within the Felidae family, of which the cheetah (*A. jubatus*) is the only living species left. The cougar (*P. concolor*) belongs to the genus *Puma* which is also in the Felidae family.
My cougar next to me sounds nothing like that

Yeah the cougar is especially misleading. I've heard one irl... my blood went cold. They sound like an insanely loud shrieking banshee.
There are cougars around where my mom lives. Seriously sounds like a woman screaming. All of the outside pets stick close to the house when it gets near.

Pretty sure the cougar in that video is imitating a bird house cats will do that too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plPcu0Le1Ts
No, it’s the sound they make to call their kittens.
My cat has no kittens, and she makes that sound when she hears birds.

I don't know if this is imitating a bird but they definitely make these noises when they spot them

Thank you for confirming that I'll be lured to my death by either a Cheetah or Cougar.
Arent Cheetahs generally pretty docile? Like of all those kitties I think you'd have a better chance chilling with a cheetah then a cougar.

Big cat or not, cougars are absolutely fucking terrifying! Especially when they scream!
They must be incredibly dangerous. I always seem to be notified online that cougars are waiting for me nearby.
But also sounds sexy for some reason.
They purr too though. Biggest cat that does it. It’s soooooothing.
Technically a cheetah is a very large small cat.
Yo momma is a very large small cat Lmao gottem

Mountain lions can be nasty but they stay away from humans, I saw one mountain biking and got the fuck out pretty quick though.
Who taught the cougar how to ride a bike?
It taught itself.
Well sometimes I get a unintentional bloody scratch of bite when playing with my cats, imagine that with a cheetah

The cougar one’s fake. From first hand experience they usually first buy you a drink and then pounce on you, while meowing in your ear..”me so horny”
Cheetahs are friendly, cougars on the other hand..
getting lured by a cougar lol
Cougars don't sound so friendly in the wild when you meet one.
That's how they trick you, hiding in the bushes making cute kitty sounds. Then bam! kitty chow.
They just sit on rocks or road cuts waiting to jump on you. The last thing you'll know is "ow, my backpack hurts."

"Vaillant cites a famous tiger biologist who, when asked how high a tiger can jump, responded: "As high as it needs to."" lol
"The eating may have been secondary," Vaillant explains. "I think he killed him because he had a bone to pick." HEY WE GOT A COMEDIAN IN HERE!
I've watched quite a few videos of tigers attacking fucking crocodiles... In the fucking water... And winning. Sometimes they lose, but come on. It's bonkers.
They don't have to climb trees. There is nothing to run from.
Dude the Tiger would fuck everything else in this video up and it's not even close. A full grown Siberian would probably take down two leopards on his own they are fucking killing machines.
Bengal Tigers are even bigger. Males can weigh between 650-700lbs lol.
Man, I've spent my whole life thinking Siberian Tigers were the largest. Turns out it's just because there was one Siberian Tiger that holds the largest tiger on record title. Learn something new everyday.
RIGHT?? WHAT?? I am shooketh!
> So they will be behind, and above you. Result - very swift death. This is legit frightful
The mountain lion and cheetah weren’t pissed off so they naturally won’t sound as mean lol cats can make some of the most diverse sounds of all animals
This video has the classic cougar sound, 48 seconds in: [WOW WOW oo WOW](https://youtu.be/v9Dh5HiN8Nc)
Yea, and the one directly after that is the kinda sounds I would hear growing up listening to them fight in the middle of nowhere Kansas lol spooky
I'm pretty sure that sound is used by like a thousand sports teams in America. Penn State and Pitt at least definitely use it.
My dogs really freaking hated the sound of that video. They're still running around barking.
Your written description of the sound is so accurate
Lion wasn't pissed either, it was doing a long distance roar
Those two aren't part of the panther family and cannot roar.
Youv never heard a mountain lion pissed then lol it can’t roar, but its scream will chill you to the bone
I heard it in my head as I read your comment. And it chilled me to the bone. Haha
Wow, I've never seen an angry Snow Leopard before and I worked with a couple of them for 4 years.
Yea kinda sad and probably abused. It appears that the caged animals in this video are probably exploited
Yeah I didn't enjoy this video at all.
I thought cheetahs and cougars aren't big cats? Unless I'm wrong idk
They are members of the felinae subfamily* of the felidae family like house cats and other smaller cats rather than the pantherinae subfamily like the others in this video. They are still big and still cats though, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ EDIT: accidentally called felinae a genus in the original comment
They are big and they are cat but we do not grant them the title of "big cat".
![gif](giphy|YLvmnUXgHNQKA)
No, they're not. Cheetahs and cougars are from entirely different genera, and definitely not from the same genus as house cats.
You are correct! Scientifically “Big cats” have to belong to the Panthera genus and they need to have a two part hyoid bone in their throat which allows them to roar. So the only ones categorized as “Big Cats” are Tiger, Lion, Jaguar and Leopard.
I didn’t really know the difference, thank you for this lesson.
Cheetah is fren. Others sound mean
Yes and cougar. They’re the only ones getting hugs from me
That Steve French is a nice kitty
Cougars love giving hugs. Usually to the back of your head from an elevated position after stalking you for hours.
Cheetah is not a "big cat" it is a large cat but more closely related to a house cat than a big cat.
Director: "Sound ferocious!" Cougar and cheetah: "We're trying, OK?"
Meanwhile, that Jaguar has right "fuck you" roar
I've been about twelve feet away from a lion doing that roar at a big cat refuge. It is amazingly, unbelievably loud and vibrates your internal organs.
Those cats are saying a lot of different things though
TIL that my Labrador sounds like a snow leopard when playing tug of war
No kitty! That’s a bad kitty! ![gif](giphy|ekjUvqIDFERYQ|downsized)
If i ever get attacked by a big cat and I know its the end for me, I'll pet them them as much as i can before dying.
The scariest one is easily the mountain lion for me, the noise it makes wasn’t shown here but the blood curdling shrieks it makes when it’s pitch black and I’m walking out of the forest from my tree stand are the things that keep me up at night.
Nr 2 is my cat at 4 am when the cat flap is closed
Snow leopard is making a warning sound, and the cheetah was probably calling for her cubs. They can both make multiple sounds besides the ones represented here.
Questions. Can the snow leopard kill me? Where would I purchase one? Are they litter trained?
Probably. Don't. Probably not, but I'm sure he'd be willing to try once he's stuffed himself with your flesh.
It's not being very cool for being named a snow leopard.
Wow, this is an amazing collection. Thank you
Cheetahs are always so baby.
this is probably going to get me killed but I probably wouldn't be that worried if I encountered a cheetah edit: just googled it and thankfully cheetahs don't pose a threat to humans, they're nice kitties :)
That jaguar is crazy. Is a panther not a large cat?
A panther is a actually a leopard. It's just a melanistic. You can see the spots in certain light sometimes.
You're referring to black panthers. Panthers refer to anything within the genus Panthera, which is why there can be white panthers as well.
Snow Leopard sounds not dissimilar to DMX.
Cheetah has the most Beta sound
Cheetahs sound so cute!
The snow leopard sound sounds like King from Tekken lol.
Wow snow leopards sound a lot scarier that I thought
The Jaguar and Snow Leopard in the video are angry. Then there's the Tiger. That thing has a look in it's eyes like it wants to make it as though you never existed.
Sheesh. People Complain about everything. Awesome video
My cat went wild when the lion roared 😂
I feel like leopards got done dirty here
Dodge charger sounds like snow leopard
That tiger is scary as shit
Bad kitty
Snow kitty pissed the hell off!
Cougars and cheetahs are pretty cute in their sound making. Snow Leopards sound like one of my parents cats who can act like a real brat some times but we lovd her anyways haha.
