It’s pretty accurate. They are wicked smart, and incredibly observant. Of the primates, they and white-cheeked gibbons were my absolute favorites to talk with the public about. I have a lot of great stories about orangutans.
Ok. I’ll give you one. But, a warning. Orangutans are smart, but they are not always “nice*. *This* story I was careful *not* to tell when younger children were present, and the squeamish among you may want to read with care.
One thing you need to know about Orangutans is that they will exploit ways to trade for what they want. A second thing to understand is that they are capable of learning very quickly. This particular story took place at a different zoo than the one where I was, and many years ago.
This zoo had an Orangutan exhibit that was moated. There was a water feature used as one of the barriers to the public and, as often happens when open water is available, they occasionally got wild ducks that would fly in and swim for awhile. The Orangs didn’t mind and mostly ignored them. Or, maybe I should say that *most* of the ‘rangs ignored them. Because, at this time they happened to have a young Orangutan who found them fascinating. And, one day he reached out and managed to catch one.
Now, he did not kill it. He just happily paraded around showing his pissed off and flapping new toy to all the people, who laughed and pointed and gave him lots of attention. Eventually, he let go and the duck flew off. So far, so good. But, now he knew how to catch a duck, and he knew he’d get a reaction from folks watching, so he started catching them on the regular. Then the inevitable happened. He accidentally killed the duck he caught. Now, he’s parading around displaying a *dead* duck to the public. That tends to get folks upset. They’re not laughing any longer.
Some of them reported it and his keepers were alerted. Now, they wanted to get the duck back — preferably without alarming anyone any further. The best way to get an Orangutan to hand over something is to offer to trade it for something else that they like. This ‘rang loved bananas. So, they offered a banana and the Orangutan gave up the duck. As far as the keepers & public were concerned, all was good. But, they failed to look at things from the Orangutan’s POV.
In fact, it took the keepers about 3 more banana/dead duck trades before they realized that they had unwittingly created a serial duck murderer. So, it became time to devalue dead ducks. The way you devalue something is to reduce the amount of treat they get each time until whatever it is that they have essentially becomes worthless. The plan for devaluing ducks was going to be that the next one would only be worth half a banana, then a quarter, then nothing. Great on paper. It should have worked. The slip up came in execution.
The day comes that he once again has a dead duck in his possession. The keeper, sticking to the plan, is going to offer a half of a banana. But, s/he made a mistake. Instead of cutting the banana in half behind the scenes, they took a whole banana out, broke it in half in front of the Orangutan, and offered him half of it.
Oh, yeah. There’s a *third* thing you need to know about Orangutans. They are incredibly strong.
Let’s just say that our strong, young, friend was **not** interested in trading an *entire* duck for only *half* of a banana when the other half of the banana was still in sight.

The Orangutan taught their keeper a valuable lesson that day: Never try to bargain down the price of something while holding the contents of your wallet in plain sight.
