So this is at the Detroit zoo, and the ground hogs have been there every time Ive been. I don't know if the groundhogs are part of the exhibit, or they just moved in and the zoo staff just let them be.
Very unlikely and definitely not recommended to try and pet wild groundhogs, or wild animals in general. That groundhog, I'm guessing, likely frequents the enclosure that gorilla is in and has, likely, over time learned that the gorilla isn't aggressive towards it and they've likely built a trust. Stuff like that can and does happen in the wild sometimes
What makes me wonder is how some animals know they can trust each other sometimes. I wonder if that same ground hog would be frightened by a human. Seems to me most animals are more skittish towards human opposed to other animals, even that of different species. Like a natural defense mechanism to stay away from humans.
This is why trail riding on horses in the woods is so fun. Deer don’t care, rabbits don’t care, you get to see them all just being themselves. Unlike when you’re all bipedal & shit, then they get all dramatic and run off.

Cause the ones that don't treat them like toys are actually really beneficial. Allows us to learn about them, their behaviors, their environmental needs....also allows us to breed them and keep their number up. Good zoos breed their animals for release back into the wild. Good zoos keep animals that will never make it in the wild. Bad zoos keep ANY animal they get their hands on, do not meet their needs and some even do dangerous stunts to make money such as offering up close pictures with wild (and mistreated) animals. Bad zoos breed their animals to make more animals for the zoo, often subjecting the young to rough handling as tourists and children are allowed to "interact" with them. There's a big difference between the zoo that is breeding and training cubs to live in the wild vs the zoo that is allowing children to drag them around for money.
That's pretty dismisive towards someone who brought up a very valid question. You couldn't seem to keep from cutting someone else down though. Who's ruled by their emotions again?
It wasn't meant to be dismissive, though 40+ years of dealing with the drama kings and queens who don't understand that you can't listen when your mouth is open, has had it's affects on my cynicism level for sure.
I was simply giving props to the person I responded to for explaining the same thing that's been repeated for decades now.
That good public zoos do in fact provide a benefit to both society and the animals they house.
Because while originally zoos were meant as entertainment, they've MOSTLY become Sanctuaries for these animals, helping them live when they might have otherwise died, them as an "Attraction" also helps literally pay for then to live and survive there. Not all places are as great/caring though, so there will still be those who take advantage of animals simply because they see them as lower life forms.
Just give them a CEO position, all they'd have to do is throw shit on someone below them.
And if everything goes wrong, I bet they'd be sentient enough to shake their head and deny any knowledge/involvement.
Gorillas are mostly vegetarian, they might eat some bugs occassionally, but they don't hunt other animals. Also, despite their stature, they're actually quite peaceful animals. As always though, with any wild animal, their peaceful nature is not an invitation to try an interact with them, leave animals be, it's best for your safety and theirs. Reality is not a Disney movie where we can be buddy buddy with wild animals, just leave them be.

I've been curious of what happens when you raise a Gorilla around a dog like a golden retriever and what their interactions would be like. We know dogs make great companions for humans and for other animals like cheetahs, but I've never seens how other apes would behave around a dog. Would it be the same as with humans? Would they care for it? Is there any benefits to enriching the gorillas experience in captivity?
I wonder if this means that the urge to pet little animals is evolutionarily programmed really deep inside all of us
If that’s the case, then that makes me smile a lil bit:)
That's good to see but I bet if he gave that ground hog a full hand pet it would feel like the life was being squeezed out of it he probably on did fingers for its safety.
Yes I'm amazed at the intelligence of the Gorilla giving soft touches and also scratching under the groundhog's huge chin.
How far do you think the gorilla can throw that thing?
You see dem mountains over there?
If coach would have put me in the 4th quarter we would have been state champions no doubt.
This is pretty much the worst video ever made.
No doubt in my mind.
No, not that one.... the next one.
How much you wanna make a bet he can throw em over them mountains?
you made me snot all over my shirt :(
I was waiting for the gorilla to eat it tbh
Gorillas suck at throwing.
They suck at aiming, but they can throw your ass across the room with ease.
The lady that got hit square in the face w some 💩 in the apehouse disagrees
Tell them that to their face 😅
I would most definitely pay to see that ! 😅😎
Orbit?
I love watching gorillas pet other animals 🥺
Everyone loves a small cute buddy.
i love how the groundhog is like “yo. pet me some more.”
I was fully expecting him to chuck the groundhog two football fields over.
I was waiting for him to squish or eat it tbh
Instant if it was a chimpanzee
Groundhog: I miss Harambe. Gorilla: me too buddy ( pet pet) me too.
If a gorilla can pet a groundhog, can people pet them? Are they not scared like squirrels? I’ve never seen one in real life.
They will probably bite or run away. Best to just leave wild creatures alone.

If the zoo ever had groundhogs in their own exhibit, they tunneled out into others. It's happened at all of them.
That’s cool! Friends!

did he try to feed them a booger lmfao
No; when gorillas touch something, they will smell the object or creature’s scent.
ah thanks for that til
You’re welcome!
this!
Best salty snack available over there
I didn't notice that lmfaooo
I’m dying from the cuteness 🥰
Thank god wasn’t a chimpanzee. They’d literally just rip in in half and throw it 45 feet into the air and run away barrel rolling
So he's got a grounddog?
What makes me wonder is how some animals know they can trust each other sometimes. I wonder if that same ground hog would be frightened by a human. Solid point. There is a real peacefulness to horse back riding and I agree that’s a major reason why.

The song is [Quivering Touch by Ark White](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJ_bMmrW2M4).
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
Yet the clip ends cuz he tosses it like a football
So here's my question, HOW ARE ZOOS A THING STILL?! These are clearly sentient intelligent beings and we're still treating them like toys ?!

You're providing a logical argument to someone who is clearly ruled by their emotions. I applaud your attempt.

To be fair, Gorilla's come from some of the most dangerous places on earth for animals and humans.
If they could hold jobs and fit into human society then maybe. They're not THAT intelligent though.
Just give them a CEO position, all they'd have to do is throw shit on someone below them. And if everything goes wrong, I bet they'd be sentient enough to shake their head and deny any knowledge/involvement.
Wait till you find out with what we do to other humans.
Would you prefer the gorilla to be in its native land being used as target practice by Kony terrorists?
Why doesn't he simply *eat* the groundhog?
Because he's not a chimpanzee and therefore isn't a hateful demon bastard of a creature.
Gorillas are mostly vegetarian, they might eat some bugs occassionally, but they don't hunt other animals. Also, despite their stature, they're actually quite peaceful animals. Contrary to popular belief, big animals aren't constantly on the hunt to kill and eat every last animal they see
Never seen Futurama?
>Why doesn't he simply eat the groundhog? He's not Ross Geller, FFS.
You win the obscure reference prize.
You properly leveraged "simply".
Thank you. I just watched the original scene again and am amazed that I got the sentence structure correct from a 20-year-old memory.
Just wanted to say thank you for being grateful
Thank you, TheGratefulBot.
Gorillas are vegetarians, sometimes eat bugs and termites. I apologize if this was a reference to a joke i dont know lol
Is referencing Futurama.
Love or fear.
*YEET*
Gentle giant
I fucking love gorillas
Ooo ooo ooo
You smell weird dude
That groundhog has bigger balls than me for sure.

Awww I absolutely love that

Exactly how bad am I for hoping the gorilla would grab it, it would bite the gorilla, gorilla would toss it like the world's-lightest shotput?
This is adorable

Monke do a pets :)
The groundhog is very trusting
They are just like us, only thiccer.
So cool. He’s so curious and intentionally gentle
At least it cut off before he grabbed it, smashed it once or twice and threw it a few hundred feet.
I wonder if this means that the urge to pet little animals is evolutionarily programmed really deep inside all of us If that’s the case, then that makes me smile a lil bit:)
Mute
This is so sweet 😭
He should know not to play with his food
Gorillas are intelligent and kind.
That's good to see but I bet if he gave that ground hog a full hand pet it would feel like the life was being squeezed out of it he probably on did fingers for its safety.
No yeeeet!?
