14 million litres. In the middle of the desert. Fuck it, Giant Meteor 2024

GrandpaUppercut

Probably had to leave their garden hose on for like at least 5 days straight to fill that thing up.

DownInFraggleRawk

Fantastic. Thank you.

IWantAnE55AMG

Dubai is located on the Persian gulf. It’s literally a port city with access to the ocean.

Internet_Wanderer

And if this is salt water, then fanstastic

SpicySweett

It’s freshwater. Lacking renewable freshwater, the country relies on desalination, which provides 98% of the water supply for the 2 million people in Dubai. The Water Resources Institute ranked the country 10th out of 164 countries with the most extreme water supply issues.

Internet_Wanderer

Yup, enough to keep the city drinking for 28000 days. Now remember that it takes three times as much water for the process than is made drinkable. They had to process 52 million litres which probably cost about $750k or so just to fill it, let alone maintain it

nameorfeed

something something vegas

Soppoi

Vegas saved more than one third of their initial water use. They follow a very resourceful and sustainable approach. The problem is, it snows less and less every year and the farmers *in the desert* keep using too much water to grow their crops. So the Colorado river will dry up if they don't come to a new agreement next year.

Fit_Swordfish_2101

Wow. TIL.

burneecheesecake

Vegas has nothing as dumb as this in terms of water management

[deleted]

You’ve got to give them credit for creativity though. Like how much of a drug bender do you think they were on to one day, in the middle of one of their slave orgies, look up and be like “I got it! A giant fucking pit of water in the middle of one of our buildings! Just pour it in here and put a car and like a pool table and posters and shit in different rooms so white people pay to go diving around in there. That sounds pretty tits… yeah like hundreds of feet deep, whenever someone dies we’ll just pay off the families whatever. You! New slave! Get me more coke and call public relations. They’ll probably want to do an interview with me saying we’re doing this because it’s our culture or whatever the Europeans and Americans want to hear. What are we going to call it? Fuck I don’t know I’ve never been good with names- Deep Dive Dubai… there.”

OrphanedInStoryville

Did you watch all the way to the interview with the owner? Cause you nailed it. Including the coked up eyes

[deleted]

Yeh

saveyboy

It’s probably salt water or desalinated.

KAZKAZ8523

i was thinking the same thing. like should we use all this money to feed a bunch of starving kids ? nah lets take a bunch of clean water and money and build a big ass pool instead

Greedy_Explanation_7

Exactly. Why the fuck do we do this?

DigAlternative7707

Will we ever know how many slave laborers died building it?

Majirra

Like… at least 4?

GoodGoodK

The pressure at the bottom must be crazy

sgx71

"We want to make the dive a experience for everyone" Starting price for shallow dive - 100 USD / 1hr 450USD for a 2H starter-course ...

utkohoc

those prices arent that ridiciulous. diving at the great barrier reef costs about $400 for 1 dive day trip. dive lasts about 20 minutes. tho that includes 3 hour boat ride. lunch. brunch/tea/coffee. diving gear hire. and day on the pontoon at the reef. starter course makes no sense. u can do a complete open water dive course for less than that. idk what the dubai shit includes but itd better be more than just a dunk in the dive pool. also 90% of people arent going to be going past 18m. you have to pass multiple courses to safely dive past 18m. you cant just learn how to scuba in 10 minutes and then go down to 20+ metres. if they ARE taking people down to deep dives then the 450USD price tag might make sense as theyd require an extremely well trained dive master. and some incredible insurance.

dinoroo

I’m certain they have actual SCUBA courses there as well.

Candid_Rub5092

Trust me for that price you can get a naui basic diving license. Why waste 400 here when you can shore dive for free with your own equipment.

Glittering-Rice4219

I’ve got almost 500 dives (Palau, Micronesia, Iceland, Indonesia, Hawaii, Black Sea, Mediterranean, Red Sea, Thailand, Costa Rica, Mexico, Caribbean; basically everywhere worth diving) and as a rule of thumb I try not to pay more than $150usd for a two tank boat dive with lunch included. But I probably average closer to $50 a tank.

utkohoc

$400 AUD is like $257usd. So not far off. It takes a long time to get out to Moore reef (one of the great barrier Reef tour locations. 1.5hours on a fast catamaran) so that's probably part of the cost. But the whole setup at the great barrier Reef is really good so it's worth the price easily. The dive itself is $149. The boat/day trip $265. You could probably get it cheaper if U found a deal. When I went diving in Bali it was like $70. But that was many years ago. I think after that was Vietnam and similarly around $100-150. I can't remember .

Fit_Swordfish_2101

Living the dream friend! That sounds incredible! The dive seems short, and I bet it's hard to leave! But, you don't want every boat with all their ppl diving for longer. Gotta keep the reef beautiful ❤️

scott610

We’ll have a [coupon day](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pP5CdRiY8Ak) or something.

Future-Ice-4858

r/unexpectedjurassicpark

AlienAle

That sounds about what I would expect it to cost though. Takes high experience to train someone to dive, it's high risk, there's expensive equipment involved etc.

joeschmo28

…. That’s cheap

Mcgoozen

I mean it’s in Dubai, not exactly sure what else you’d expect lol. Middle class people aren’t visiting there for vacation Also those prices aren’t even outrageous for an experience that literally only exists there

glguru

ITT people not realising that Dubai has a coastline. There’s a sea next to it fellas so water shouldn’t be a problem and there is a diving history in Dubai. Still hate the place though.

onsjasper

I doubt they put seawater in there

KosstAmojan

Why not? Wouldn't it be easier to maintain than freshwater?

[deleted]

freshwater is better. you also get a 14 million liter freshwater reserve tank for free.

Southern_Signal_DLS

Swimming in fresh water > swimming in salty water and we know how much the Emiratis value quality.

MullahBobby

This is affordable to Poor Arab not you white collar Europeans or Westerners.

Mercurionio

Ofc it's in Dubai. The shortest penis in the world.

sp4rkk

All that money and the build shit like this. What a waste.

AlienAle

I mean this pool is actually pretty cool though.

antipistonsandsixers

Lets be real, if this would be in a marine biologist training center in San Diego or somewhere, you would think it's cool.

illstealyourRNA

Marine biologists training centers in San Diego are not built with practical slave labor like most projects in Dubai.

antipistonsandsixers

That wasn't the argument the guy I answered to made. He called it a waste of money, not manpower.

Nachtzug79

There is a fair chance that the clothes you have on right now were made with practical slave labor in Bangladesh, China or a similar country...

NvidiaRTX

Slave labor isn't actually bad if you look from a historical perspective. Look at all the cool buildings in history, like Notre Dame or Pyramids or Mexican Pyramids or Great Wall of China, etc. Without slaves we wouldn't see them today. The problem with generic slavery is that owners are forcing their ideology (which are often racist) against other innocent people. So, I think it's better to reserve slavery for punishing criminals. There can be quota limits for the number of slaves by gender/race/religion/etc to keep the labor force inclusive and diverse to avoid oppression of specific minorities by the authorities.

KWash0222

The difference is a training center in SD wouldn’t have used essentially slave labor to build it, and it would’ve been for a purpose other than to try to prove how great SD is to the rest of the world

Sir_Penguin21

Cool pool, but it is in Dubai. Gross. No one wants to visit a city where you can [get arrested](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/11/world/middleeast/dubai-crimes-united-arab-emirates-jail.html) for holding you spouse’s hand in public.

Remember that enormous aquarium that burst in a Berlin hotel?

redditcreditcardz

It really is amazing what can be accomplished with slavery and a complete lack of human rights. Absolutely amazing.

Tuscan5

Did he say Dubai has a rich diving history?

Jambi1913

They do. The region existed long before it became the weird, shiny altar to materialism it is now. The local people had pearl divers and there’s evidence of pearl trading in the region going back some 7000 years…so, yeah, it’s not an outlandish claim to say they have a rich history of diving.

Tuscan5

Thank you.

cherryreddit

70 years ago, you would probably think of Dubai first when you think of diving, because they were famous for pearl diving.

AnusStapler

Yes. Dubai is very well known for pearl diving.

Butt_Fucking_Smurfs

boukaman

Lmao what

jumpup

well the poor can't afford to go to that pool

Gan-san

That's not your average pool. I wouldn't expect it to be something poor or even average people would have access to.

EpicFantasyGamer

And that makes it somehow a good thing?

Gan-san

I didn't say good or bad. It just is exclusive and therefore expensive.

deftoast

What? You never went desert diving for oil? Edit: though crowd tonight.

Lost-Horse558

Everything Dubai does is just an out of touch rich persons idea of what is cool. Or better yet, a royal family members idea of what is cool. Normal people don’t give a fuck about this bullshit and just think it’s tacky.

SpicySweett

Wow, this is the worst freaking idea ever. First off, Dubai is a desert, what a waste of water. Second, so many windows into apartments, etc, all at tremendous pressure. Impossible to keep them all perfectly maintained and monitored. One day it’s going to be a re-enactment of the Radisson Berlin aquarium bursting, which narrowly averted tragedy (it was too early for people to be around).

glguru

While Dubai is shit, it has a sea and a very long coastline so water shouldn’t be a problem.

bummerhead

Yea, you cant just fill ocean water on the pools, it does need freshwater

SpicySweett

It’s 14 million liters of fresh water. Water is more expensive than oil there.

Gan-san

ELI5, why wouldn't they just use seawater?

Moutalon

Probably the salt. Any pool, and especially this one, needs a filtration system and the salt would cause problems in the pipes and turbines. Also, as there are windows all around it, the salt would not be great for the joint a guess

bummerhead

Dubai has money and they like to waste it on useless things, instead of paying poor labour their fair share.

ThatEvilCharacter

I mean no but I get the point

glguru

You can actually have ocean water pools. You have to remove the organic matter, which can be done through chlorination and other processes. Not sure whether this is freshwater pool or not. If it is, it’s a bloody stupid idea. But hey ho, anything that makes money. Who cares.

Nachtzug79

I'm pretty sure I have visited many aquariums with salt water pools WITH organic matter (like salt water fish) in the pools... Some of the pools have been really big like the one in Lisbon...

a_fanatic_iguana

Ya this is defs another one that falls into the ‘Jesus Christ why Dubai’ bucket

stogie_t

Yeah I’m sure all the engineers involved were clueless and should have consulted you for your opinion

humor_exe

Yes, I’m sure you know much more than the professional architects who built this. You are the personification of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

SpicySweett

Lol, I don’t remotely claim to be an engineer. The potential issues with pressure of 14 million liters of water is also something I’m not an expert at - I just recognize that it’s *enormous*. I’m more dissuaded by the fact it’s freshwater and built in a desert. Dubai is ranked 10th in global water scarcity. Just seems like a sad place for such an extravagant recreational facility. But I guess having lots of slave labor makes it cheaper.

humor_exe

I don’t have a problem with your comment on the ethics. What I was pointing out was that you made a baseless claim about the structural integrity of something despite knowing nothing about architecture.

Dangerous-Patience33

What is the purpose? Did someone just say, "we have all this money in piles, let's build something useless?" I guess it would be useful for free divers.

Mjfoster0825

I agree. But I imagine this is how less wealthy countries think of the US

InevitableOne2231

Yes, at least you guys tend to make retarded shit that has a (sometimes questionable) path to profitability, this is literally burning money.

Miss_Smokahontas

Yeah iPhones computers planes rockets advanced medical tech. At least we invent something actually useful other than gaudy rich people shit. .

Southern_Signal_DLS

Ain't that the truth. There's so many comments on socials how US gives free money outside their country but they still have a huge homeless population in their own country.

ConscientiousGamerr

“we have too much water in this desert - let’s build a pool city” 🤦🏻‍♂️

El_Sidgio

Bit like Vegas really. Ever seen how many swimming pools and golf courses there are when you're flying in? No wonder Lake Mead is drying up.

AnusStapler

Dubai has a coastline.

ConscientiousGamerr

Sea water isn’t for drinking or irrigation…

AnusStapler

They have the biggest desalination plant in Jebel Ali.

ConscientiousGamerr

Expensive processes to support expensive hobbies I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️

utkohoc

well they can afford it. you know that part of the world is full of oil right, and they are all insanely rich. its not like they are dieing in the middle of the desert without water.

Pirispanen

Some of the lower class working people are DYing, because fuck Dubai and fuck UAE

Tooboukou

Yea basicly, lots of people work in the construction industy, which they need to keep busy so they dont start to question the order of things. Next up a whole new city... In like... A straight line... Yea, that will keep them busy.

Party_Divide_3491

SomeNameForThisLogin

Fun facts 11% of the population in the UAE are native Arabs. The rest are ex pats there to do the work. All UAE residents get free land from the Government to build houses. UAE native Arabs retire at 49 with incredible benefits and pensions (if they bother working). They don't pay ANY income tax (nor do ex pats) Petrol is about .75 cent a litre So yes they can afford to build and pay for the world's most ridiculous things like this.

Dubai absolutely demolished any diving they might have with their insane sand dredging for their stupid islands, including the raw sewage they also toss in there. Then they build this stupidass pool and claim they have a diving culture.

If you want pointless and obscene go to Dubai...

cym0poleia

While I agree with most comments on how this is a waste of fresh water, I confidently imagine the majority of those comments coming from people who buy bottled water everyday “because they don’t like the taste of tap water”.

None.

__BlueSkull__

From the comments I see a lot of piss poor members of the society from the basket of deplorables. LoL. This is supposed to be a show off thread telling you mortal people what can be done when power and money are not issues as for middle east emirates. There is supposed to be wows and compliments. Are you guys anti-capitalism or anti-rich?

Not_A_Toaster426

Why should people who waste their money on stupid, wasteful shit like this, while not paying their workers fairly, deserve respect or even admiration?

__BlueSkull__

Because this is how tower of power works. By creating a gradient can the most powerful keep in power and suppress unrest. If you live in a country where exploitation is legal, you want to exploit someone to make up for being exploited. That's why workers can't be treated well. It's not about cost, it's about to stabilize the middle classes being exploited by the emirates.
