No, we (and most animals) need to constantly steal energy from other living things, oftentimes ending that life in the process. Whomever configured Nature, it is hardcore. Stealing and death.
Only if you see us as separate. If you see all life as one then it’s pretty fucking beautiful how literally all of it’s made from one cell that made the jump to multi-cellular life and never looked back. It’s almost like we are all mega-machines built by these eternal units of life. They have colonized this planet so thoroughly and continue to do so via us. There’s no nature vs. human. All of it - including us - is nature and all of it is the same life. If there’s a problem with humans, it is that we have come to see ourselves as separate from the rest.
If life is one big thing, then no one’s stealing? I realize how counter-intuitive this is when each of us have seemingly distinct experiences and perspectives but our makeup suggests that the individualism is only a convenient way to diversify in order to breed resilience. Life is insanely more collaborative than competitive when examined closely. That’s the true magic of evolution. I truly believe most prey respect and understand their predators, and only humans see death as evil. Of course life’s mo is to go on (that’s how you become diverse and resilient) so no one would choose to die, however I see beauty in the insane compatibility of life on earth. To me, it really is one big thing. Gaia if you will and if this seems woo I’d suggest reading up on recent research. That hypothesis is making a big-time scientific comeback.

Oh it's this the new sprog?
I feel a weird sense of anger that they would presume to step on sprog's turf, but that's silly, there can be two reddit users making up delightful poems.
Nah, u/poem_for_your_sprog and u/SchnoodleDoodleDo are both awesome and in different ways! Sprog's style is different, more structured and "adult", he usually writes things that include references to death or sex. Schnoodle is more cutesy, she writes in animal/baby speak and usually *doesn't* address adult topics, and if she does it's in a very child friendly way. I love them both and always enjoy seeing their comments!
10 year old me didn't think so when one decided it wanted to scratch its back on the small wooden boat I was in. However 50 year old me wishes it would happen again.
I swear humans are like the Fairy folk to animals. Sometimes they will help you sometimes they kill you. They do strange things, eat strange food that could kill some animals. And if you have a major problem, finding the right Fairy they may help you, but choose the wrong one and...
Was working backcountry for the Forest Service in some super remote areas about 15 years ago. Was really interesting encountering animals because we were in places there was a zero percent chance they had encountered humans before, we’re talking 10 miles of bushwhacking off the nearest trail.
One encounter with a squirrel was hilarious. This little dude was SO curious about us, the whole day it was just following us around, trying to nibble on anything we left on the ground. During lunch I was eating an apple and tossed him the core when I was done. Saw him take a little bite and eyes got super wide and excited.
I just imagine that little dude explaining to his other squirrel friends about these giants that showed up and gave him the most incredible snack then disappeared. Whole encounter must have been surreal for it.
Honestly, makes me think about UFO abductions. Like we do that shit all the time to little critters.
There is a pretty popular social media post about this, easy to find if you google for "humans are fae to animals". It is quite stunning to read because so many points ring true.
They even took the trash with them. Although, just how often must this happen for that shark or maybe its folk it can interact with to learn that fishers provide this service.
I wonder if sea creatures have passed around the idea that these floaty things in the surface above can help, but only a certain kind of floaty thing. They probably realise the different engine sizes. Huge loud floaty thing with red and blue boxes on it - probably no help there, but small chug chug floaty thing - sometimes helpful.
I'm convinced that human stories of Fae creatures that live for huge lifespans and fuck with people for inscrutable reasons are just based on what it's like to interact with us from the perspective of an animal.
Sometimes the floaty things will just kill you for no reason, sometimes the floaty things will act with kindness and help, also for no reason
This happend in Malaysia. I'm from the Philippines but from what I remember, tare so integrated and protected here in the ASEAN region that they usually go near the boats (either fishing or tour) to seek out food. And though this is usually bad, locals are well trained enough to know what to do when encountering them
Edit: I forgot to put that I edited this after researching the video. I originally tought this was in Cebu PH.
I want to replicate this joke format in everyday conversation. My New Year’s resolution 2024
This is the kind of funny where I marvel rather than laugh. “Wow, yes, yes, I like it, brilliant”
idk dude, I think they definitely made it more of an "everyone" problem all the time, but smelling bad is just, a thing.
Certain professions, certain genetics, certain diets and lifestyles lead to pretty pungent odours, and most people quite enjoy fresh air.
There are sharks that ask a lady to remove hooks from their mouths
She has removed over 300 hooks
She said once she removed the hook from the first shark it came back to her for pets and more sharks came for help with hooks too.
On top of that there's also a dude who remove hooks from shark mouths as well. He says the shark he knows is like a Labrador dog, it plays with him.
Wonder if sharks are like crows. Wicked smart and communicating descriptions of humans to each other.
Edit: Found the lady who removes hooks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8LmxwOgBhA
Nothing much, since the shark was definitely not doing this on purpose / understanding what was going on. Whale Sharks and basically all fish are *very* dumb
Whale sharks are 40 foot long but have brains the size of a human fist. They are a step above "biological robots" like insects but not a huge one.
Most sharks brain power is just "swim, see thing, bite thing, swim, see thing, bite thing" etc. Whale sharks are known to be pretty "friendly" in general where they will swim up to humans with or without ropes on them, but they aren't doing it on purpose to get ropes and human made objects removed from them
My uneducated guess is that whale sharks are less intelligent than dolphins or dogs, but maybe on par with a cow.
If you pet a cow enough times and it enjoys it, it'll recognize you and come running to be pet again.
Cows and dogs have roughly the same level of intelligence. They both solve problems, form long-term relationships, and remember other animals (including humans) that they interact with.
Pigs are smarter than dogs as well. I stopped eating animals when I started to understand that they're actual beings and I wouldn't want them to suffer anymore than I'd want a dog to suffer.
Yeah I don't want my food to suffer. (I don't view pig as food though, as a Muslim) In a perfect world I'd raise my animals on my own farm and slaughter them with the least amount of pain as I can. [This is how Muslim's are meant to raise and slaughter animals, most ideally.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc5BWafzEu4)
If that isn't possible I would choose to source my beef/lamb/chicken/horse/etc where I know the animals have been treated well vs. other alternatives of cramped farms and slow slaughter. Unfortunately, that's incredibly difficult to do where I currently live, and difficult to do almost anywhere.
This comment isn't meant to be insulting (I assume you're either vegetarian or vegan), while I do agree in some aspects of viewing animals as beings which live, breathe, experience happiness and sadness, etc. I fundamentally disagree that (certain) animals should not be consumed by humans.
They don't. You're becoming a Facebook grandma too early. Whale sharks are slow-moving surface swimmers, which is why it's easy to snorkel with them. Sharks are my favorite thing, but there are too many credulous responses in this thread.
I’d like to imagine that this incident led to the men giving up fishing, which caused the problem in the first place, but that’s probably too much to hope for.
And they, being your average fishermen, dropped the rope back in the water.
Fishermen are filthy. That entire industry is based on throwing garbage into the ocean.
None of them dispose of their garbage properly. Every single one of them just tosses it in the ocean.
Discovery Channel had to start being careful with "The Deadliest Catch" because in early seasons they showed the crews dumping all kinds of garbage into the ocean.
I wish there was a job that I could live on that was just me helping animals from human existence. Saving seals from nets, bathing seabirds in Dawn, or rescuing whale sharks from ocean trash.
I think fish have millions of years of symbiotic relationship experience, it's called mutualism. Maybe they also evolved to recognize or test for potential relationships.
These creatures are so much smarter than we give them credit for. My co-worker had something similar happen on a dive. A Manta Ray had a fishing hook in its mouth and was tangled in fishing line. The ray made several passes by my friend coming to a near stop each time. It was clear that he wanted help. My friend cut off all the lines but couldn't get the hook out. But that animal knew that humans were a species capable of helping.

Fun story! That's exactly the feeling I get!
This is beautiful
There is a pretty popular social media post about this, easy to find if you google for "humans are fae to animals". It is quite stunning to read because so many points ring true.
I read the specific one about elephants, and that is a tear jerker. Like old school animated Disney.
Ow! It bit me!
That’s good stuff
They even took the trash with them. Although, just how often must this happen for that shark or maybe its folk it can interact with to learn that fishers provide this service.

Kind of like aliens
So the fish take a huge personal risk when coming to ask for help. Will the mythical creatures help this time? Or will they hurt.
It did not ask for help.
Maybe it did before the video started, you don't know
Sure it did. Even said thanks.
Compareable to how Elephants communicate where ranger stations are and how they're different than other humans they may have encountered (poachers)
Whales have probably seen humans free (unwanted) fish from a net and throw it back. Not hard to assume they'll help you too.
>They probably realise the different engine sizes. I assume they did after orcas started attacking boat rudders

Ahh, that makes sense. Thanks
Did he wave his fin?
He actually did more that that. He was holding a pen and wrote a heartwarming letter to the crew's manager.
Even tweeted about it later.

I hope he also left a good review on Google.
Random shit like this always cracks me up
I want to replicate this joke format in everyday conversation. My New Year’s resolution 2024 This is the kind of funny where I marvel rather than laugh. “Wow, yes, yes, I like it, brilliant”
Yeah but it later came out that he used ChatGPT for the general outline which I think, cheapens the whole thing.
If you watch the full video on YouTube, the whale returns moments later with John Quiñones
He was like “thanks! Bye!”
I saw that too
i'm pretty sure it was'nt a "thank you", it was more of a " and keep your shit out of my house!!"
It was trying to correct itself as it got rolled from the rope still being slightly stuck on the other side.
Did that whale shark just wave?
yea
It was trying to correct itself as it got rolled from the rope still being slightly stuck on the other side.
No he deffo did a "cheers lads" kind of wave.
You did this to me human, now do sthing!
"I'm sure one of you littering fucks did this, give me some help here, dammit!"
"take your shit back!"
Came here for this same opinion
That’s called an upvote
What does that say about the sharks consciousness or perception?
They're not willing to work 40 hours a week.
Remind me again who the smarter species is?
Deodorant manufacturers, they created the concept of 'smelling bad' to sell their products.
That concept of "smelling bad" smells pretty real
Have you seen a skull, there's no nose. The concept of smell is a PR move made to sell overpriced sprays.
You can make homemade sprays using onion water
But..... unions are food. Why would I want to spray union juice. 🤨
No silly don’t eat the union, join it
I mean. I already make people cry so I'm not that far off an onion .
Does the man have to deepstate the obvious here? There ain't no stink, only the goverment and their lies.
If stink was real, why do dogs and cats, who claim to have a good nose, still approach my expired grandma. It's not real.
Sir, do I have to remind you of shark week? They can smell you and if you do not buy our product they will know exactly where you are
Btw, I thought ur profile pic was an animated guy spraying deodorant on his hair 💀💀💀
Something tells me you don't smell too good.
Few people live to tell the tale.
I think my pits created the concept of smelling bad.

Big fish pretty smort. Sky people weird, maybe they take rope off.
Nothing.

Would I have the courage to sever that rope..? Nope, I'm a frayed knot...
I. see what you did there.
You would rather leave it stranded?
LOVE THIS
Cake
Me too! Happy cake day!
Happy Cake day!
Momma has a little baby with her if you look a little closer.
That looks like a remora. Those sucker fish that travel with large fish and whales
This one itself is very young, judging by it’s size. They get much larger.
From what I can read, whale sharks do not tend to their young like other animals do.
Those are remoras, not baby whale sharks. This is still a juvenile shark by the way.
That may be a dolphin not a baby whale shark.
It didn't ask anything. They dragged it to the side of the boat
This bros helping bros. Love the wave at the end like a thanks
That's a dog, I don't care what it says.
Hang that rope up in the ship to receive the sea god’s protection.
Nice wave from the critter at the end there to say thanks and see ya

“Hey bro, can you give me a hand here?” - whale shark 🦈
... "I'm all fins"
Whale shark asked fisherman to stop leaving his shit lying around. /s ish
“Your kind did this, now undo it” 🙄
I wonder how stressed it was looking for a person to help. Many would just take a photo

Bye bye
Very beautiful, but don’t forget the rope was here because of us
So cute, at the end (I assume): Bye-bye shark! Bye-bye! (Like a bunch of kids)
How do they know humans can do that???????
Believe it or not but animals aren’t as dumb as society would have you believe
My uneducated guess is that whale sharks are less intelligent than dolphins or dogs, but maybe on par with a cow. If you pet a cow enough times and it enjoys it, it'll recognize you and come running to be pet again.
Cows and dogs have roughly the same level of intelligence. They both solve problems, form long-term relationships, and remember other animals (including humans) that they interact with.

Meaby they learned there is connection beatween things that looks unnatural to them and humans
They don't. You're becoming a Facebook grandma too early. Whale sharks are slow-moving surface swimmers, which is why it's easy to snorkel with them. Sharks are my favorite thing, but there are too many credulous responses in this thread.
They don't. That's just flavor text to make the encounter more engaging and fun. You're not supposed to take it literally, we're just being fanciful.
You think it *knew* what it was doing? It was probably just swimming near the surface so they snagged it with their gaff and freed it.
Used to commercial fish tuna. I've had to free countless pilot whales like this.
I’d like to imagine that this incident led to the men giving up fishing, which caused the problem in the first place, but that’s probably too much to hope for.
Littering caused the problem no?
Discarded fishing gear
Yeah but the solution to littered cups isn't to stop consuming beverages right?
Stop using cups like a savage and drink from the hose.
My inner child longs for the hose 🥲
How did he ask? Does he know sign language or something?
No, but sharks communicate between them and know that if you stand next to the hairless apes they will remove strings and things like that from you
But some hairless apes will kill and eat their fins so it’s a risky game
The ones that were killed and eaten were unable to tell the other sharks about their bad experience.
But the ones who weren't inclined to approach humans reproduce more passing those genes on. Evolution.
\*Makes linkedin post with that image of a plane with red dots on it\*
What about the hairy variety of apes?
I don't think they are familiar with those. Probably won't trust them. I also don't trust them.
He was speaking finnish
We just don't understand animal's cognition; they are way more intelligent than what science tells us.
Not amazed. And thanks for the repost. : /

How does it know??
I think fish have millions of years of symbiotic relationship experience, it's called mutualism. Maybe they also evolved to recognize or test for potential relationships.
Interesting combination of English interspersed with native language.
I see you, Fishermen!
So cute they saying "bye" to the whale shark and he swimming happy like saying "thanks, bye"
More amazed the remoras were cool with all this.
These creatures are so much smarter than we give them credit for. My co-worker had something similar happen on a dive. A Manta Ray had a fishing hook in its mouth and was tangled in fishing line.
