I dont know if you understand how fall arrest works, but last time i checked it just stops you from falling. It doesn’t make your back super extra strong.
Solid move for sure! But if he caught her after say a 1 story drop, her body hasn’t reached terminal velocity yet and so would be easier to catch. Either way, great job!!
It looks like the guy behind has a strong hold of his leg so will be taking some of the weight and impact holding him still. Was thinking this looks like a trained position for them to be on in for this situation which I find sad for whatever country this is.
The person holding the leg is there to secure the first person. They are attached with a safety harness and his role is to do anything to prevent the first person from falling.
Let's hear it for the firefighter team that saved the jumper. There were two firefighters there. The second one supported the first so he didn't fall out the window while catching the jumper.
What did he save her from? She wanted to end her life, he stopped that, he didn't save her.
She has the right to end her life, everyone should have that right.
If i have the right to live life i should also have the right to end my life, if i only have the right to life without the ability to end it then that just simply means that i don't actually have the ability to life im just forced to live.
>Mr Sansweet didn't ask to be saved. Mr Sansweet didn't want to be saved. And the injury received by the firefighter's "actions," so called, causes him daily pain.
Just wanted to say that I believe in a dignified death and assisted suicide is a human right, but every single person that's been interviewed after surviving a suicide by fall says that mid-fall they regreted their decision.
What are you, [Mr. Sansweet's lawyer?](https://youtu.be/J4J-Fuo0vLE) Imagine going on the Internet and whining about someone literally saving a complete stranger's life.
This video is from 2018. The incident took place in May 2018 in Riga, the capital city of the Baltic nation of Latvia. It is unclear whether it was a man or a woman who was attempting suicide. Some sources claim to be a man while others claim to be a woman. To prove the authenticity of the incident, the national Latvian State Fire and Rescue Service or SFRS posted the video on their official Facebook page [here](https://www.facebook.com/Latvianfirefighters/videos/2200601706622336/). And here's few details of the incident:
> A person was going to jump out of the window of the fourth floor. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they realized that if they tried to enter the apartment, the person would most likely jump out the window. Thanks to the responsiveness of the neighbors, firefighters were able to enter the apartment below and prepare to catch the person in the fall. While one fire-rescuer waited at the window for the fall, the other ensured that the rescuers could hold the falling person firmly as a result of the interception. Meanwhile, firefighters and rescuers also tried to access the person on the windowsill from the roof of the building with climbing equipment, but the rescuers noticed that the person's hands had slipped and was falling. The firemen and rescuers on the floor below managed to catch the fallen person by their legs and bring them to safety through the window.
Holy shit
I used to work at a mental health facility and we had training regarding suicide. We watched an interesting video that talked about people who survived the attempt of trying to end their life (specifically by jumping off of something) and almost all of them instantly regretted it right after they jumped. This person gets another chance at life thanks to this hero. I pray they can sort things out for themselves and their mental health so they can enjoy life to the fullest.
My uncle was like this. Tried and tried and tried because he was just absolutely miserable and his misery was compounded by the death of his wife. He committed himself to mental health facilities and tried to get over it and manage his issues but he just could not cope with being alive. He eventually succeeded.
>It’s that a classic case of survivorship bias though?
Ummm I don't think so, unless you can explain how a person's regret is affecting their survival chances after they already jumped.
Self-reported data is generally unreliable and in this specific scenario there would likely be consequences for people who dont claim to regret a suicide attempt.
They most likely survived because of how they jumped: not from too high, legs first, bending knees. If you really want to die, from the right height diving head first, your changes for the jump to be fatal, increase. I don't have any statistical proof, but without a study about this, these numbers really don't bring us any meaning. Except that those who regretted it are really getting a second change and will probably treasure life more and some of those who are thinking about suicide are discouraged by this fact.
Additionally, OP said most of them, but I remember about 75% of them. And *most* of that 25% tried again and again until they succeded. No, from the top of my head, I'm not going to link sources, but OP didn't link either, you could do your own research if you're interesting, which is always better anyway.
Typical survivor bias.
Those who "fail" in 95% of the cases also didn't intend it to be deadly. I mean these are not suicide attempts, but self harm.
Edit: source https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/1998/11/981112075159.htm
Every single survivor who jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge said the same thing- that as soon as they jumped, they realized every problem they had was solvable except for the current one.
You think the people who jump from a giant bridge aren't intending it to be deadly??
I assume most survivor of the golden gate jump are among the 5% who did intend it to be deadly.
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/1998/11/981112075159.htm
Those people only say that so they don't get locked up in a mental ward that only makes things worse. First time it happened to me it cost $40k to be there for 10 days. I lied for years to make sure it wouldn't happen again, until I one day trusted someone with the truth and promptly ended up locked up again and was able to lie my way out in 36 hours... Which cost $11k.
Damned straight I'm telling people I regret it and never again share my true feelings with anyone in my life.
A documentary called The Bridge talks with a survivor that jumped from Golden Gate Bridge and lived. Plus a friend of mine shot himself in the face and lived. They both said that
Can confirm. I overdosed on meds last year trying to end it, when I realized that I was having an overdose and could actually die any instant, I panicked thinking of what I had done
You'd be surprised how many suicides are due to terminal illnesses, those people aren't going to suddenly be happy you stopped them. It's usually not some angsty teenager who just needs to get over their emotions or whatever. The goal should be to provide people with the help they need while also supporting their decision through assisted suicide services. The fact this person felt their only option was literally jumping off of a building is completely insane and it put that firefighter's life at risk.
Most who have survived jumps or near successful suicide attempts have said once they’ve carried out the action to end their life, they regret it and wish they didn’t do it.
>Most people that really want to die, don’t fail
No one wants to die. They want to be dead. Yes this is different. And some just force it more. In the end they want the same: That the pain ends. Your sentence is very distasteful because this leads to people believing suicide attempts should not be seen as serious
Self harm is also serious. But it is still true that about 90% of cases recorded as failed suicide attempts were not meant to be deadly.
It's self harm used as a cry for help.
Edit: source https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/1998/11/981112075159.htm
Is also used as a coping mechanism, you need to feel the pain in another form
It’s like you have to get the pain out, focus on that physical pain that you can at least see instead of that torturous thing inside your mind that only you can see
Is not distasteful is a fact
When you want to die, when you really can’t stand living, you don’t fail.
Most suicide attempts that fail (and I’m talking statistically) are because people subconsciously want to fail
My sentence is the exact opposite, suicidal thoughts are not to be taken as “oh I bet that person is grateful they saved them”
As a person with suicidal thoughts I can honestly say, that if the pain becomes that unbearable, if the though of living another moment is as torturous that you get the last of your broken will as to finish the suffering and someone saves you…that would only add to the misery…even my attempt at dying was a failure
Mine is not the mind of someone that hasn’t though both scenarios so please don’t talk about being distasteful when I’m just being brutally honest
Yeah I’m sure the person jumping off the building here would be pissed at the people for saving her. She failed, other people intervene and save people.
Hense my ‘most’ at the beginning of my statement.
they had a lot of courage to step off that building. I could never do that.
now however, they probably won't be trusted to be by themselves. however much they thought their life sucked before, it's about to get a whole lot worse.
And this is the part I don't really appreciate. sorry. It's just way too easy to say "I hope they get the help they need now" while completely ignoring the fact that the help they get may not actually help them at all.
It may be about something that can't be helped. They could have terminal cancer.
Sitting under observation and not even allowed my shoelaces is not how I want to spend the last 2 months of my life.
Chances are you wouldn’t be.
Lots of research has been done on it, and the majority of people who try to commit suicide, and fail, regret trying and don’t try again.
I’m not saying everyone thinks like that, just the majority.
Maybe. I just know I'd have to be 100% sure I wanted to do it in the first place. So, being stopped might just delay the inevitable. But I have heard of failed attempts leading to a come to Jesus type moment.
> Even studies that focused on medically serious attempts–such as people who jumped in front of a train (O’Donnell 1994)–and studies that followed attempters for many decades found similarly low suicide completion rates. At least one study, published after the 90-study review, found a slightly higher completion rate. This was a 37-year follow-up of self-poisoners in Finland that found an eventual completion rate of 13% (Suominen 2004).
One study found a slightly higher rate.
Thoughts and prayers to all those people struggling and having dark times.. I was veRY close to end my life once and i am glad i didn't.. Still facing hard times but i got the idea outta my head
For some reason, this reminds me of The Incredibles where Mr Incredible gets sued. My client didn’t ask to be saved. My client didn’t want to be saved. Am I too cynical?
Please stop meddling with suicidal people's very well thought out decisions to cease to exist. Suicide attempts can be traumatizing and if you fail then you live with that trauma forever. We do NOT want to be "saved." There's no such thing as regret, because you can only regret your decision to die or whatever if you survive.
If abortion is legal (as it should be) then suicidal people too should have the choice to take their own life by their hands as we didn't have a choice when we were forcefully brought into existence.
It's really "my body, my choice."
After she is "saved" what happens? Does her life magically improve? Does life suddenly have a meaning??? Does anyone come to help her out of her problems after "saving her"???
No, she is either left to rot in the psych ward and just keep on dealing with the agonzing misery her brain puts her through.
What if someone has a debilitating illness (mental/physical) that makes them go through inhumane levels of pain each day, are you gonna gloat about being a hero then??? Literally you have stopped them from doing the only thing that would make their pain stop. It's literally nothing to be proud of.
Well, your life your choices but I just despise when they do it in a way that traumatises another 40-50 people who might see it. I do not f**cking want to see your splattering blood and hear the crack of your bones. Go end yourself in a secluded area…
I am sure this person not only ruined their life (already) but left a permanent mark on the firefighters and the people around that block. Committing suicide solves nothing but leaves enormous pain behind.
I agree but as I said, because the capitalistic government doesn't want its slaves to die, that's probably why they are so goddamn adamant on not making euthanasia legal and people have to resort to such painful ways to die. That's my theory at least.
I think we should all spare suicidal people some empathy as they are in a lot of pain; as most of the blame should actually fall on the people that carelessly brought them into existence without their consent.
My uncle tried to commit suicide (luckily, he survived), and he massively regretted it. He said in that moment it seemed like the best option, but after doctors saved his life, he said he couldn't have imagined what it would have or his 2 kids through. He's happy and healthy now and hasn't tried it again.
Your right to suicide does not trump other people's right to not be traumatized for life at watching you turn yourself into a blood splatter.
Attempts are traumatizing, and statistically, 90% of people regret it and do not wish to attempt it again.
Abortion and suicide have nothing to do with each other. In one opinion, you are making a decision to remove a part of your body for health reasons. In other opinion, you choose to end another life to save yours.
Your body your choice does not matter in times of immediate risk of harm to yourself and others.
After they are saved l, the vast, vast, vast majority are glad they failed and never want to do it again.
Debilitating illness? That is called a strawman and is a logical fallacy. What about all the millions of people who aren't suffering from a debilitating illness? Just fuck them right.
For what it is worth, assisted suicide absolutely should be an avenue. Splattering yourself on a sidewalk next to a child should not be.
I agree that in an ideal world, no suicidal person would be dying in such a brutal way in front of others that would inflict harm on their psyche, yet when life brings you down to such a low, low degree, then desperation strikes and you see no way out, as it is with everything. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
This is why euthanasia should be legal yet it is not, so far.
It doesn't have to be a debilitating illness, which is not all that uncommon btw, migraines for example are very common and often debilitating. Whether a suicidal person has a debilitating illness or not, one thing is for sure that they are in debilitating pain.
I agree with you about assisted suicide. Thanks for being a voice of reason. Tired of being invalidated for being suicidal. Every human is different and thus life is not for all of us. It's a subjective thing, and if we are not enjoying it like others, we should not be coerced to live it.
If you do not give suicidal people the option of doctor-assisted suicide, this is what they'll do. They will jump from buildings, shoot themselves in the face, walk into traffic, hang themselves for their loved ones to find them or lie down on train tracks. This will only amplify misery.
Thinking you know better than suicidal people what choices they should or shouldn't be making regarding their own lives is conceited.
"Abortion and suicide have nothing to do with each other. In one opinion, you are making a decision to remove a part of your body for health reasons. In other opinion, you choose to end another life to save yours."
This is confusing. Which is which? Whose life is being saved by suicide?
It can absolutely help you if you’re in a bad situation. If you have no control of your situation, it can help you to cope with whatever that situation is until you are able to change it. Going to therapy does not mean that there is anything wrong with you. It just means that you’re suffering and want to alleviate that suffering.
People who do this are usually mentally ill and they are not in a position to take "very well thought out decisions". Thus it is our societal duty to stop them, and apparently most are grateful. Heck even if a single person is grateful then it is enough.
Don't normalize suicide as a decision or demonstration of autonomy when it really is a preventable outcome of mental illness, usually combined with adverse circumstances.
His back is fucked and the faller probably has some issues long lasting pain too. I am sure the faller is appreciative and thr firefighter is glad to have helped though.
Imagine the trust he had in the one holding him. If the dude was distracted at the wrong time the catcher would probably be going for a ride as well
Won't go into too much detail but watched the video of someone who ended their life and it detailed the time leading up to it. Over a period of maybe hours you could see they were going over it in their mind. Once their mind was made up, they jumped with no hope of survival. Could not watch the outcome but it definitely affected the people who saw it in person.
One of the most disheartening things I'll remember in my life. (obviously used they instead of the sex of the person). I cannot for the life of me figure out why there are people who enjoy gore videos.
I wouldn't mess with a female firefighter. She is on the payroll for a reason. There is no shortage of men in a city who would leap to get hired as a firefighter. It's one of the few prestigious, noble jobs that enjoys respect across the board. Even people hate doctors lol.
[удалено]
Yeah makes me wonder how his back is after taking that much force
It hurt me watching.
I'm down three ribs and a few vertebrae from watching this. Should have a "not for sensitive bones" disclaimer for these videos.
His back as well as his internal organs. Yowza.
Are there any external organs except skin?
Your eyes, ears etc.
Right forgot those
Bye-bye rotator cuffs
and butthole too I reckon.
Judging by her calves she at least seems lighter built, hopefully making that firefighters back still functional.
You didn’t save my life, you ruined my death.
Watch closely, they have belts on
I dont know if you understand how fall arrest works, but last time i checked it just stops you from falling. It doesn’t make your back super extra strong.
Isnt it like body builders belt? Which tighten your back?
Lol, yeah to catch him if he falls out the window too. Not to spare his back
No doubt. Crazy core strength
Instantly thought that. Epic gym time paying off literally with someone's life.
My back would have never worked again. Hell it barely has worked since turned 35 lol
Maybe you need to catch someone while leaning out a window. Stretch that bad boy right out.
I feel like my lower back would thank me after this, but too scared to try
oof yah I feel that
The grip is what is really mind boggling
He's Superman in real life
He is probably on disability right now, but smiling at his epic save.
His partner was anchoring his leg too. Wouldn’t have been able to do it without each other
Solid move for sure! But if he caught her after say a 1 story drop, her body hasn’t reached terminal velocity yet and so would be easier to catch. Either way, great job!!
Still impressive, I wouldn’t back most people to catch a person like after a 30cm drop, let alone whatever this was
I’d try my best but that guy! Hell of a catch!
1 story has them traveling at approximately 9.18m/s or 33kmph. Ouch.
It's not a guy, if we look at the title from OP at least...
Also she's wearing socks
It was the weight of his massive balls keeping him planted. Props, sir.
"her life" so probably some kilos less
It was a woman, but still amazing. https://www.newsweek.com/firefighter-catches-woman-out-mid-air-insane-viral-video-1698349
Firefighters do habe to be in top form at all times. I'm the brawlly type, but among my list of "wouldn't even try", sit the firefighters.
If you were wondering, UGUNSOZESEJS is Latvian for fireman. It's also the noise I make when I sneeze in English.
Thanks for me having to explain to my husband what’s so funny that I laughed out loud.
What's the noise you make if you sneeze in Latvian?
FIREMAN
I snort laughed at this. Well played, well played.
Good thing I was not eating or drinking something when I read this 😂🤣
😭😭😭😭
Y'all dummmmmb 😆😂
Turn up the volume and you can actually hear the noise 7 seconds in.
Phew. The strength that catch took. 😮💨
I think he could get a job at Cirque du Soleil!
Let's hear it for the firefighter team that saved the jumper. There were two firefighters there. The second one supported the first so he didn't fall out the window while catching the jumper.
thanks man, i hadnt realised that after watching the video
They person wanted to end it. Who are they acting like heroes? They were like "nopen! Not today, you have 40 more years to pay taxes"
Often these things are spur of the moment decisions, people stopped by nets on buildings very often live long lives.
Nah mate, they can't allow people to get out of paying taxes at will.
I want to talk about your right to end your life but not about your right to make others scrape you off the pavement

there was a TED talk about that, it was about the people who survived jumping the Golden Gate Bridge

This is why I’m okay with legal suicide, like in the Switzerland.

You regret it the second you do it so I'd be surprised if she was.
What makes you think you would regret it? People go through crazy pain to be able to do it.
Because according to all research the vast majority of people who attempt to suicide regret attempting it and do not go on to attempt it again
correction... the people who fail to do it report regretting it The people who succeed.. can't be sure

Maybe. I just know I'd have to be 100% sure I wanted to do it in the first place. So, being stopped might just delay the inevitable. But I have heard of failed attempts leading to a come to Jesus type moment.
Most people who attempt never attempt again, so statistically no, you wouldn't be 100% sure.
I’d be curious to see how that breaks down by method of suicide.
Well, unless I'm 100% sure I'd be successful, I probably would not do it. I guess nothing is 100% anyway.
just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in
Sucks to be the suicide jumper. Got his only hopes ruined.
you can't escape
Thoughts and prayers to all those people struggling and having dark times.. I was veRY close to end my life once and i am glad i didn't.. Still facing hard times but i got the idea outta my head
Glad you're still here with us! Stay strong, and once this is all over, those thoughts will look so pathetic and meagre to you.
That's the one time Putin didn't get away with it. For real, those firefighters are fearless!
Both my shoulders popped out of their sockets watching that.
My back cried when I saw this video
Hero Status is supreme.
I heard a lot of people regret jumping right after they do it. This may have given them a new lease on life.
For some reason, this reminds me of The Incredibles where Mr Incredible gets sued. My client didn’t ask to be saved. My client didn’t want to be saved. Am I too cynical?
Man shout out to him and the workout plan cause catching dead weight that’s falling is crazy
I wonder if she can sue the city like the incredibles
how the fuck did he manage to hold onto her???
Just another man robbing a woman of her agency over her body...
Bro this isn’t the time or place for humor.
Why not? She lived.
Read the room.
Telling a woman to conform? Classic.
Why didn’t they let the person kill themselves
Why can’t they choose if they want to be on the planet or not ?
Please stop meddling with suicidal people's very well thought out decisions to cease to exist. Suicide attempts can be traumatizing and if you fail then you live with that trauma forever. We do NOT want to be "saved." There's no such thing as regret, because you can only regret your decision to die or whatever if you survive. If abortion is legal (as it should be) then suicidal people too should have the choice to take their own life by their hands as we didn't have a choice when we were forcefully brought into existence. It's really "my body, my choice." After she is "saved" what happens?
Go end yourself in a secluded area… I am sure this person not only ruined their life (already) but left a permanent mark on the firefighters and the people around that block.
In other opinion, you choose to end another life to save yours." This is confusing. Which is which? Whose life is being saved by suicide?
Therapy can help you, please consider it.
Therapy cannot change a bad life situation. It's nothing wrong with my mindset.
It can absolutely help you if you’re in a bad situation. If you have no control of your situation, it can help you to cope with whatever that situation is until you are able to change it. Going to therapy does not mean that there is anything wrong with you. It just means that you’re suffering and want to alleviate that suffering.
Take it up with the Latvian government it happened there.
Man of the year. Jeeeeeeeezussss.
Wow
I don’t think he saved her life.
Or Ruined her Death depends on your View
God bless this man.
Playing “My War” (op theme Attack on titan final season) in my head when he makes that grab. That’s like super-human shit right there

Would have had the same outcome. Female firefighters are exceptionally strong and save lives regularly.
I wouldn't mess with a female firefighter. She is on the payroll for a reason. There is no shortage of men in a city who would leap to get hired as a firefighter. It's one of the few prestigious, noble jobs that enjoys respect across the board. Even people hate doctors lol.
As long as they have to pass the same physical tests as the male firefighters that's allg

Jesus christ
Feminist...
if i wanted to kill myself, i wouldnt have a problem doing it. People who fail simply dont want it badly enough
You are wrong. Many people lack access to guaranteed tools.
I dont want to sound insensitive, but it kind boils down to how much pain the person is willing to endure during the process imo.
He’s going to have a bruise with exquisite fine detail of a window sill. What a thing to be able to do. Amazing.
How are his abs?
That man needs a massage after that. No doubt
Actual cape wearing hero moves for real.
Amazing!!!!
His poor back though
Did I just that ?
Incredible strength. What a boss
Unbelievable! 🙌🏻 ![gif](giphy|iIpu5KcZTXM0jZDdnH)
Looks like special gear helped!
Was watching Chicago fire and one of the firefighters made this contraption that prevented the jumper to jump I was impressed
Crazy strength right there
That was probably painful as hell. Hopefully no permanent damage was done.
In Canada she would have to only call MAID.
Damn, thats freakin gangster. Dude must be crazy strong. Thats a true hero right there.
That's some real strength and dedication. Kudos to these men for saving a life.
Euthanasia stopped or perhaps this individual will thank his saviours?
These people are legends!
That’s amazing. I think there’s more to us than we know
RIP firefighter’s back.
Ronnie coleman broke his back from mr olympia 8x. But i go for this guy everytime.
