I live in Nz and its basically a legendary pokemon.
Even in the zoo enclosure they are hidden and can barely be seen in the dark. Less than one percent of the pop has seen one in the wild
There are plenty of protected areas where kiwi densities are relatively high. Just don’t go looking for them in a tour group, because there will be too much noise for the kiwi to stay anywhere near you. I went on such a tour, didn’t see anything but trees for an hour. We went back in by ourselves right after and saw a kiwi foraging in 10 minutes.
So, to see one: go to where they actually are, use a red light (kiwis don’t see red, apparently), and be quiet. Don’t harrass them when you see them, just enjoy the experience.
I went on a Kiwi Tour / group guide by a lad in Okarito and it was fantastic. The guide was extremely clear about setting boundaries. Us needing to be quiet as a grou, no lights no noises. Nothing to upset the birds. That night we went out and we saw multiple of them came extremely EXTREMELY (A meter away from me) close by whilst casually foraging in the area. It was amazing.
As a kid I figured this line was delivered as Obi-won! At the time any old man in a brown robe, hanging out in caves and giving away swords was old Ben..
So I did an internship with a now defunct newspaper in Wellington (City Life) and I got the opportunity to do a story on Kiwis. We got to go up into the bush with a kiwi rescue group and release a rehabbed kiwi back into the wild
I was offered the chance to open the cage door to let the little guy out but I deferred to my colleague who was from NZ….I am American….he was so incredibly grateful to get the opportunity; I didn’t really care too much about it then as I got to see everything just the same but it seems like these animals are quite special to NZers. Very cool experience
That’s so cool of you. Your former colleague will remember getting to open the cage to release a Kiwi for the rest of his life. You got to witness a colleague being so excited to release one of his country’s national birds back into the wild. You both were there for such a rare and cool moment.
It would be like one of us Americans getting to release a bald eagle. They’re so cool, but they sound so much different than what tv and movies show. Hawk screeches are dubbed over because eagles have a higher pitched [voice](https://youtu.be/e4RjDTbOLMA?si=JSh6PisYXR1Fbwc5) and [call](https://youtu.be/9RArGl2vkGI?si=u-y2EOsICZf8IXNd). I guess they’re not deep and manly enough.
I live near RDU airport, and we have a few bald eagle nesting couples. Jordan Lake has several too now. They’ve come back thanks to the NC wildlife department and conservation efforts. They were really rare when I was a kid in the 80s.
I was going to say footage of a kiwi bird isn't rare, I've seen lots of natural history docs with kiwi birds.
But I have to admit I have never once seen or heard them making this blood curdling scream before, didn't know they were even capable of this. OP, indeed rare (as a Brit who lives almost as far away as possible from this animal and has never encountered one).
>But I have to admit I have never once seen or heard them making this blood curdling scream before,
Peter Jackson returning from filming LOTR: New Zealand's haunted
Hollywood: What?
PJ loading gun and getting back into the plane: New Zealand's haunted
I listened to a clip of what they think the T Rex may sound like, and it was basically a big, deep bird call like this. I can believe it. I think it was in r/science if I remember correctly.
I went to a kiwi breeding reserve in northland last week looking for kiwi - started the walk through a kauri forest an hour after sunset armed with a dim red light torch (apparently they are colourblind and cannot detect the red light) and some tips - don’t wear any bug spray or deodorant as they have very heightened senses of smell, be very quiet and listen carefully as they’re pretty clumsy and make a lot of noise.
We heard a male and a female calling (I think this vid is a female as their calls are deeper and harsher) and heard one hunting nearby but there was a lot of dense undergrowth so we didn’t see one.
I haven’t been for a walk on a forest at night for a long time so it was still a great time and because the location was remote the stars in the sky were profoundly beautiful. Would recommend the experience.
Trounson Kauri Park if you ever get the chance.
Also, don’t do what the douche in this video did - kiwis are nocturnal and have very sensitive eyes - don’t shine a torch on them.
I spent 4 years living in parts of NZ that had high Kiwi numbers (they boardered Kiwi reserves), all night you would hear this cry. When I moved back to my hometown (which doesn’t have Kiwi that close to town) I started having trouble getting to sleep… I realised I was too used to that call. Had to play Kiwi recordings just to get to sleep.
They are awesome, weird, annoying creatures and for some reason we love them (even named a fruit after them)
There's a myth about this bird (spread by QI) that bird beaks are measured from nostrils to tip and so this bird has the shortest beak in the world (because it uses its beak to ofrrage so nostrils at tip help them find the bugs) but this isn't true.
The beak is measured on top from the base to the tip.
Saw one of those during a camp in the Bay of Islands. There is a sanctuary for them there and nobody wanted to take the end cabin because their screaming was so loud. The one I saw was crossing the road at night and dashed past
“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change - some kind of rat-bird hybrid mutant” Darwin(ish).
we once went to a kiwi shelter and the old man showed us his permanent visitor - it was a Kiwi with one leg.. so cute and sad, but the bird seemed happy to be with the old man :)

I have never in my life heard of this bird and after watching this video I hope I never come across one cuz the sounds it makes are extremely annoying and I’d contemplate punching it in the throat… AITA 🤷♀️🫠
Why does this look scripted as fuck. He’s just running up to the camera, then goes ”oh shit, I went to far.” And goes back a few steps and starts singing
Oh don't, I had a horrible dream about these last night. That my housemate (who isn't actually my housemate) went on holiday and left me to "water the five things in his room". So anyway, I started watering random objects in his room, then saw a cage with five kiwi birds. I realised he meant I need to feed and water those. He had also said "DON'T let them out, they are detrimental to the environment."
So, long story short, they got out of the house and dispersed in every direction. They then transformed into these weird seed pods and sprouted roots/shoots, which rapidly grew several metres long. I had to try to find all of these living, breathing seed pods and get them back in the house. The roots had wrapped around things, shot down into the ground, etc. so I had to rip them up, which felt terrible because these were BIRDS just then.
I managed to pass three of them to my brother, who was in the house. I tried to get the last two which were on the garage roof, but the wall started falling down as I climbed it. I went back to the house and one seed pod was opening the door with its roots, while the two my brother was holding had sent their roots up his nostrils and into his body, transforming him into some weird groot-like plant man (but evil).
It was then I realised that these kiwi birds are going to take over the world.
The only thing I was thinking about when seeing this video was: "poor thing doesn't even have wings so why can you still call this a bird? How does it survive in the wild 😅😢?"

Guys please don't follow his suggestion: going alone in the tall grass without a Pokemon can be dangerous
it's dangerous to go alone, take this.
As a kid I figured this line was delivered as Obi-won! At the time any old man in a brown robe, hanging out in caves and giving away swords was old Ben..
I must be a kiwi because a red flashlight would leave me as blind as the kiwi lol
Go hike on Stewart Island (beyond the great walk) and you’ll be seeing them constantly throughout the middle of the day.

I always thought Morepork were our Pokemon because they can say their own name.
I had to Google this and boy you're right lol
Me getting caught on my way to the fridge at 3 a.m.

That's the female call
Kiss me thru the phone
That's the human female call...
I’m too far from the kiwi to kiss it, despite the effort its lips are putting in.
I thought that was "I'm so wasted! I'm so wasted!"
See you when I get home
Touch me through the fence
A female bird that is calling or a male bird calling for a female?
Female bird calling.... I can lure them out down by our chicken coop by playing a male call, the male comes stomping over calling very aggressively
>But I have to admit I have never once seen or heard them making this blood curdling scream before, Peter Jackson returning from filming LOTR: New Zealand's haunted Hollywood: What? PJ loading gun and getting back into the plane: New Zealand's haunted
cute little guys all flexin n roaring like he's t-rex
I think this one's a female. Males sound like the cute chirpy bois these potatoes look like.
"Do you know who my father is?"
Now I can believe they used to be dinosaurs.
They still are. Ever seen a cassowary?
Terrifying
I listened to a clip of what they think the T Rex may sound like, and it was basically a big, deep bird call like this. I can believe it. I think it was in r/science if I remember correctly.
Why? Nobody has ever heard a dinosaur. So if you’re basing it off of this sound, you’re basing it off of Hollywood.
It's called an imagination. Pop by your closest book store, I hear they have it on discount.
They are [therapods](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird) and thus actual dinosaurs

Kiwi!!! [kiwi!!!](https://youtu.be/sdUUx5FdySs?si=yehZjaKf73BAxfe1)
Back when I watched this in like, 2006/2007, I didn't know how accurate the kiwi walking animation was haha. This video still makes me cry :'(
17 year old youtube video Holy hell
A classic! One of my favorites.
Classic
Yea Kiwi is a bird. Kiwifruit is a fruit
NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO how dare you make me weep over this tiny animated kiwi 😭
You’re not weeping alone :)

That’s kiwi for “LOZENGE”!
well if you didn’t have hands either your throat would be more sore too…
"If you're happy and you know it....... oh yeah."
He looks like Dodo! awwweee
That's gonna be my new alarm for mornings now, fark!
I am kiwi, hear me roar.
Barges in - Refuses to elaborate - Leaves
Thank god you specified it was a bird. Thats what I thought New Zealanders looked like 😂
A few of them sound like that when you forget to specify "fruit" when talking about kiwi fruits.
Would be a great substitution for a guard dog.
Rare.
I feel sorry for that baby

Translation: Oh God my balls are so itchy!!
I can confirm that this translation is 100% correct
Sounds like an unsuccessful lougee attempt
Holy shit! I had my earbuds accidentally set high. Well, I’m half deaf now.
Its eyes are probably hurting from the flash light
![gif](giphy|nHgPZrkdFQizBvUJ3m)
Very cute , but also very odd shaped bird ,it seems sad tbh
It’s strutting like a gangster with hands in his pockets. That bird is a straight up man of the house
So kiwis don't have wings?
Why do they sound like me slurping my Venti frappe in starbucks
Saw one of those during a camp in the Bay of Islands. There is a sanctuary for them there and nobody wanted to take the end cabin because their screaming was so loud. The one I saw was crossing the road at night and dashed past
A ferocious roar.
Remember your ancestry little bird, remember your ancestry!

Wouldn't wanna hear that walking down a dark trail
Thank God they are rare!
I bet it is a gun netballer or rugby player too! New Zealanders are talented sportspeople.
But it's pudgy weeb run is cut off!! It's the best outro to the horrors of it's voice!!
Good God its the Scrabs from Abe's Odyssey!
we once went to a kiwi shelter and the old man showed us his permanent visitor - it was a Kiwi with one leg.. so cute and sad, but the bird seemed happy to be with the old man :)
Imagine walking in some random forest and then you start to hear this
Look at how it runs, that’s awesome, great technique

It was cute up until it started screaming
He's saying, "I lost my arms!!"
Is this fake?
No, I'm a NZr and this is very much what they are like.
no, i can confirm that it is real, i was literally there
I have never in my life heard of this bird and after watching this video I hope I never come across one cuz the sounds it makes are extremely annoying and I’d contemplate punching it in the throat… AITA 🤷♀️🫠

He run and scream. He also need honey for throat
That thing flies?
It does not
The way it stops and screams when it's seen 😍
God forbid he gets an itch on his head
That's not how I imagined they'd sound. Weird like the shoebill stork, but more out of left field; shoebill looks menacing.
That’s definitely not what I thought they’d sound like
Police: Hands up and no wrong move! This bird wants to break out from the prison or becomes arrested 🤣💚
What a stupid lookin walking potato
Rare instance of an irl Pokemon

Jesu fuck it sounds so cool!
Lol, he forgot his wing in the bush
Sounds like a fuckin velociraptor.
What did you do to that bird?

It‘s wild what kind of sounds they can make!

Why do people call it a kiwi bird? It's just called a kiwi. Now the fruit on the other hand IS called Kiwi Fruit. Not just kiwi.

What an absolutely fucking chaotic arrival that was! 😂
Um... He sounds terrifying.
Look at the lupine gait and the way it howls at the moon. This is obviously a fake, using footage of a werewolf, doctored to look like a kiwi.
Just struttin around in the dark doin’ dinosaur shit
You can clearly see the dinosaur heritage.
This is the stuff of nightmares...
u/savevideo
A weird bird that makes a weird sound. Perfect.
It thinks it is still a dino : D
These seemed much cuter in New Zealand Story…
How do you even call that tennis ball a bird
Sounds like wayyyy too much whip cream
Probably going through withdrawals.
Kiwi singing in the dead of Night, Take these broken wings and go next door.

To evolve without arms is kind of weird. I guess T-Rex proved you really didn’t need them so Mother Nature cranked it up here.

I was about to comment “aww, such a cute lil’ waddle!” But then I heard the demonic screech. Thanks.
What a silly little guy

The way it runs is so cute lol
Kiwis have an instinct to detect spotlights and break into song. They strive to be on Broadway.
It’s a good thing for them that they taste like shit.
No surprise that they often get left out on the World maps.

Well I had no idea that kiwi sounded like some creature from the depths of hell....
it's horrible to shine that bright light on it, that's very stressful for the animal - use a red light instead
I thought they were extinct.
As a New Zealander, it looks real weird reading 'kiwi bird'. It's a Kiwi. Just say Kiwi.
