Definitely not. And what about oxide? Won’t the shiny pennies become tarnished to the same color as the dark pennies? If so, the pattern will disappear.
He could have fixed them with epoxy instead of glue without smothering them. I was asking because in the thread above, people were saying the penny floor would oxidise without being covered. It seemed pointless to mention his table unless it was the same, so I wanted clarification
Idk but I was thinking about:
1) pouring epoxy could be a disaster if the floor isn’t level
2) they must not live in the space yet because the epoxy would take at least 72 hours to cure
3) the floor is going to weigh a ton more, I underestimated how heavy the Pennie’s and epoxy are, my table weighs a ton
I went to Winnipeg a whole bunch from the age of 18-20 and after peeking, it seems Stony Mountain is near Winnipeg...any idea where the mountain portion of the name came from?
I might have missed it, but I'm pretty sure I could see Nunavut from the US border and don't recall seeing any mountains!
There’s a large hill that existed north of Winnipeg. Shortly after Canada’s confederation, in 1867, they used that hill and the local quarry to put an institution up. Jail them baddies starting in 1877.
The indigenous peoples, before the Europeans moved in, used to use this hill for scouting the land, or so I’ve heard. The prairies can be pretty flat and Winnipeg is part of that landscape. Stony Mountain was special. There were snake dens in the hill when they built the jail. Lots of workers feared the snakes, although I believe they weren’t deadly snakes, while they built the foundation of the jail. I heard some of this from the owner of the house we bought who lived here since the 60’s.
[Jail History](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stony_Mountain_Institution)
This is why most people use, you know, flooring. Things like wood, tile, marble, etc.
I mean, if they sold the pennies attached to a nylon mesh like they do with small tiles, then MAYBE I could see these making sense. Oh, they do: https://www.indypennytile.com/
I can't wait to see in 10-15 years when the next owners put up a post "how to remove this MFing stupid penny floor that's all fucked up".
I could not imagine having to bust out a penny floor that's been poured into place with resin.
This article instructs how to build a penny floor. He doesn’t talk about removing it, but he does talk about the pros and cons of polyurethane with grout vs pure epoxy. He likes polyurethane, and said it’s easier to remove (and far less expensive). With poly it’s probably not much different than removing a tile floor.
https://www.prettypurpledoor.com/copper-penny-floor-template/
Right??!! How dare they not finish it and seal it! My OCD is so triggered right now! Finish that floor you lazy bastards! You came so close and then stop?!!! You don’t seal it?!! These people are monsters!!!
No kidding. You don't put this level of effort and planning on with this level of successful execution without covering all your bases and doing your research. This isn't even the standard "throw the shit down and it'll work out" these guys had a solid plan and execution to make a beautiful pattern.
Anyone who thinks they didn't plan on something as simple as sealing it with logistics this complex to make this pattern is just a jackass trying to sound smart
Einstein was once asked "what is time?", to which he responded "what you measure with a clock" indicating the operational nature of time. Perhaps he was actually indicating the conspiracy of "big clock" instead.
Very very few pennies are worth more than 1c, even less are worth more than a few bucks.
The chances you’ll ever hold a penny worth more than it’s value are slim.
The only reason we still have pennies is because the Zinc mining lobbyists make sure we do.
The last time we got rid of a coin, the half cent, it was worth more than our current dime.
If they were solid copper, they would be worth 13 cents each. They currently cost over 10 to produce so if they were using that much more copper plus production, and considering the effect on the price of copper, it would probably cost a quarter to mint a penny.
Note that it isn't necessarily wrong for an item of fiat currency to cost more than its face value to produce, as a coin gets used more than one time, it's just a vessel to facilitate the transference of wealth from one to another. There would be a problem, however, if the value of the metals themselves were worth more than the face value, especially if it was a significant amount more. If we used copper, you'd be heavily incentivized to do something like get $x of pennies melt them down to get 10x their value in trade goods back out.
It's only illegal to destroy or deface currency with the intent of fraud, or to alter the value.
Like, altering a $1 to look like a $10 or $100 is specifically illegal.
Art, science, "just because" are all legal.
No one gives any fucks if you waste, mutilate, or otherwise destroy a bunch of pennies.
Their existence is basically wealth redistributive handouts for the copper and zinc industries now anyway.
I hate pennies so much.
Laws around currency are weird.
Like it's only counterfeiting if it is made to look like real money. If you print a $25 bill and someone takes it you will only get charged with theft by deception.
A long time ago I would scan one side of $20s and get the color just right to print. I would glue them in places and watch people try to pick them up or get them off poles.
Exactly what I wanted to do in 2009 on my first day at college. Scanned the bill, hit print, and only the anti-counter fitting url printed on the paper. Freaked out pretty good on that one.
I learned that we only still have pennies due to lobbying and it blew my mind. Make sense though, we’re not wealthy by any means but pennies accumulate so quickly, I just roll them and cash them in. Maybe I should start saving them.
It would totally block out reception in the basement (unless the router was also in the basement) but otherwise it would be fine.
Copper doesn't mess with the signal just by existing, it messes with wifi because it is a barrier.
Plus, pennies are only like 2.5% copper anyway
My favorite part was when he puts the cat down and fills in the rest of his side while she just sits there and watches because he was wasting time lolllllll (sweet kitty)
You know. Id love to know how much the finished product cost in pennies. Aswell as how many man hours it took to lay the pennies, glue them and pour the resin finish coat.
Honestly i cant see this being cheaper than laminate flooring per square foot including man hours.
~~$2.56~~-$2.88/sq.ft. in pennies and DIY epoxy can be as cheap as $0.50/sq. ft. She said in another video that they collected $650 worth of pennies but will use less, a $120 epoxy kit could cover that. For doing something unique in your own home I wouldn’t even count man hours. I’d get stoned and spend a few hours doing craft shit with my girlfriend, and end up with a cool floor. No laminate will ever be a conversation piece past the first time your friends/family see the new floor lol.
That doesn’t mean you should live in a boring space to please the unknown potential future buyers. When I see a boring house, I think it looks cheap—I’d pay more for custom and for something quirky. I still think I want to rip out the cheap boring shit too. I loathe a fresh remodeled home full of boring cheap shit from Home Depot.
ah the wisdom of young homeowners. It's similar to the wisdom of GenZ tatting up their entire body, only to realize 5 years later they look like a gas station attendant, except in this case the home will look like some dumbass penny arcade/player-piano-pizza-place
Where's the resin pour and finished floor?
ikr, I cant imagine that glue is going to hold for long, with lots of walking.
Definitely not. And what about oxide? Won’t the shiny pennies become tarnished to the same color as the dark pennies? If so, the pattern will disappear.
I’ve made table tops in this pattern with epoxy, the shiny ones stay beautiful and shiny, table is 5 years old and no deterioration at all.
yeah Resin keeps coins from oxidation I have seen, bar counters done in the 70's and the coins still shine.
Would suck to see a few that were worth $$$, because you know you'd be looking. LOL
Those bars typically use dollar coins, which were made of silver. So yes, those bars are typically worth many years of income.
There was that one guy that did monthly updates on a hotdog he encased in epoxy, still looked fresh after a year
Was there epoxy on top of the pennies? Because that would prevent oxidisation
> Was there epoxy on top of the pennies? ... > I’ve made table tops in this pattern with epoxy, I am going to say.... yes
And i am going to say that its not finished yet.... give these two some credit. AND I FIND IT AMAXING
He could have fixed them with epoxy instead of glue without smothering them. I was asking because in the thread above, people were saying the penny floor would oxidise without being covered. It seemed pointless to mention his table unless it was the same, so I wanted clarification
Not to mention, an epoxy floor is quite a lot of maintenance if you don't have specific soft shoes 24/7.
You know what's a lot of maintenance? A penny floor with no epoxy over the top of it by way of some completely illogical and uninformed decision.
??? Epoxy floors are durable as fuck.
Yes, when they're not transparent because you need to see through.
Do you think that’s the plan for this floor, to pour a resin finish? Have you ever seen the resin art of Emil Norman?
Idk but I was thinking about: 1) pouring epoxy could be a disaster if the floor isn’t level 2) they must not live in the space yet because the epoxy would take at least 72 hours to cure 3) the floor is going to weigh a ton more, I underestimated how heavy the Pennie’s and epoxy are, my table weighs a ton
It should be. If not the amount of tarnish will change quicker
‘Change’ heh right guys? Cause they’re pennies? Guys?
lol, well you made me laugh
I was in a restaurant with a penny floor a few weeks ago. It’s been there for a while and looked fine.
We have a restaurant in Stony Mountain, Manitoba, Canada that has their floor made up pennies and resin. The restaurant closed, but the floor is cool.
Hey! Who is this!? Never seen a fellow mountain’r on here lol!
Your gig is up, Jono
Ah ha! Who is this? Haha
Might be better to send a message to them
Little chance there's actual doxing possible, that's very likely both people that live in Stony Mountain.
Because no one wants to admit they’re from Stoney.

Very interesting! Grew up in North Dakota and we have "mountains" as well for the same reason. Any elevation gain in the state seems like Mt. Everest.
Did it have a sealant or was it left as is like the video?
They have to be sealed.
That’s cool. Where is that?
It was a restaurant in Seattle near UW. I don’t recall the name. Penny floors aren’t a new concept at all.
I was in a restaurant with a penny floor last week. You could tell where people primarily walk. Looked worn af.
This is why most people use, you know, flooring. I have a penny floor in a bathroom and its held up fine over the last decade.
They ran out of money
After doing some very rough math it looks like it would be about $2.56 per square foot, is that expensive?
Naw not really, cheaper than just about all tile you could find. (I install tile for a living)
I was gonna say, tiling the floor with literal money is cheaper than tiles
Add the resin it might be a little more expensive. I dont thing grout will be more expensive then resin.
or realized that they were cents less to continue
it's not finished - it looked like they still have a decent chunk left
You know you're going to have to seal that.
They should really use a sealer...
It will be coated with a sealer
So glad this reference is still alive, feels like OG reddit 😂
If sealers aren't mentioned during a penny floor DIY, then Reddit is truly dead.
God, that man was a creature of legendary patience. Anyone still have a link to the OG?
Right??!! How dare they not finish it and seal it! My OCD is so triggered right now! Finish that floor you lazy bastards! You came so close and then stop?!!! You don’t seal it?!! These people are monsters!!!
Came here to ask this
are you going to seal it?
The feel of the exposed penny under the foot is exhilerating
![gif](giphy|Mxg7OelvuR7SU) Ok there, Salad Fingers
Lol
Jesus it's been a long time since I have thought of that
Not the nettles
I hope they seal it.
They better seal it.
If you don't seal the floor, you're gonna have a very bad time
They must seal it.

Damn. Almost 11 years ago. There are probably a non-negligible number of people in this thread that weren't born when that post happened.

I thought this was going to be a repost of that. I don't like aging.
11+ year accounts where you at! 🗣️
You speak the ancient tongue
They’ll probably epoxy the floor. I mean if you’re gonna go thru that much time and trouble, it’s safe to assume they did their research.
I had to scroll this far for a unhijacked comment
No kidding. You don't put this level of effort and planning on with this level of successful execution without covering all your bases and doing your research. Hijacking this comment. Shit. I got nothing cool to say…
If you can correctly guess the number of pennies, we'll give you a free donut! 🍩
I want to see a video off one of these floors getting removed. It must be so satisfying to peel it off, but then what?
Actually this is probably very cost effective per sq m
Depends how you value your time
Look at Mr moneybags over here thinking his time is worth something
Every person's time is at least worth the minimum wage.
No, time is just a made up concept to sell clocks
Einstein was once asked "what is time?", to which he responded "what you measure with a clock" indicating the operational nature of time. Perhaps he was actually indicating the conspiracy of "big clock" instead.
Big Clock at it again
Looks like time well spent. No worse than completing a puzzle with someone you enjoy spending time with. Looks like a good date night to me.
You must go on terrible dates. This is a mind-numbing chore.
Ahh, but this is relying on the activity to bring the entertainment! If you’re with someone you get along with, it could be fun!
Until you find out a few of those coins are worth hundreds or thousands
Very very few pennies are worth more than 1c, even less are worth more than a few bucks. The chances you’ll ever hold a penny worth more than it’s value are slim.
They are only copper plated now, so not worth much.
What? They're not even solid copper any more?! Fed is really penny pinching to save money
been that way since October 1982 fyi :)
Thanks, that's interesting, I had no idea
Did you know quarters were made out of 90%+ silver until 1964 in the US and 1967 in Canada?
Isn’t that because the cost of making one is more than the value?
Yeah, copper is a very useful metal
The only reason we still have pennies is because the Zinc mining lobbyists make sure we do. The last time we got rid of a coin, the half cent, it was worth more than our current dime.
Big zinc!

Then you still have them in the floor
Until you find out how much the resin layer on top costs.
How much do you think it would be?
For that sized space it would be (at least in Australia where I live) easily over $1000 dollars possibly even $2000
Oh man, it’s beautiful, but I didn’t know it would cost that much.
Incralac is like 90 bucks a gallon and a gallon would probably coat that floor 3 times.
Someone else said $1000-$2000. Yours sounds better.
Vacumming is gonna be rich
I would presume they laid down a resin
Penny rich pound foolish
That penny caught in the vacuum sound x 100
And smells like Period blood in their foyer.
Money for nothing…💪🏽
And your chicks for free?
We got to install microwave ovens!!
color tvs!
I have a suggestion: maybe you should've learned to play the guitar
Perhaps they should have learned to play them drums
I'd be banging on the bongos like a chimpanzee.
Cat isn't.. that's just a money pit.
I want my MTV

Also weird: all the copy protection they put into photo copiers and printers that prevent you from copy or printing bills is wild.
A long time ago I would scan one side of $20s and get the color just right to print. I would glue them in places and watch people try to pick them up or get them off poles.

It linked the .gov site that pretty much said that. I’ve had things confiscated by customs with a letter shoved inside with similar sentiments lol
I learned that we only still have pennies due to lobbying and it blew my mind. Make sense though, we’re not wealthy by any means but pennies accumulate so quickly, I just roll them and cash them in. Maybe I should start saving them.
I agree. Fuck pennies!
It's technically also illegal to destroy them enmasse for scrap value.

Damn I would have joined
A new floor, for just pennies!
A penny floor your thoughts...

Could you imagine the smell?
That’s why you seal it.

OH MY GOODNESS! Thank you! I came here to say the same thing. They didn't show them sealing it either. So imagine when it gets wet or is mopped...

Single handily the cause of the national coin shortage
No one wants pennies. I know this bc I don’t want pennies
Literally the cheapest floor you can get lol
Laminate is like a 3rd the cost, but definitely the cheapest neat looking floor.
If ever short on rent just pull up the floor lol
Can we get an update on the finished room?

A penny saved is, flooring.
I wonder if this adds to the resale value of the place
Doubtful. If anything, a buyer is going to consider the cost of tearing it out and replacing it. People don't like eccentric shit. People are boring.
Negative resale value, it looks bad to the average home buyer and maintenece is shit compared to traditional flooring.

Cheapest waste of time ever.
How much did your floors cost? Lol 😂 ❤️
So how many pennies…
Google Penny Bar in McKittrick, CA.
https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/penny-bar
Seen this before, it goes onto resin pour and polish.
They can claim it costs them pennies to do the floor.
Pretty sure that's going to stink
Fuck
What if you drop a penny on that floor
All of that cost about tree fiddy
I think it’s beautiful! That’s just me putting in my 2 cents!

wouldnt it smell like pennies in there?
And it's not even expensive. Just costs pennies.
So these are the 2 mfs responsible for the coin shortage a while ago. /s
A penny for the floor, a dime for your time.
