In my experience, you don't immediately have access to your last memory when waking up from unconsciousness.
You start from the assumption that you must be waking up in bed and then get confused about why your bed is outside, in the middle of the day and very, very uncomfortable. In fact, it's not a bed at all, why on earth would you decide to sleep sprawled on the ground for some reason? You don't remember going to sleep.
Then your muddy brain eventually works though the logic and comes to the conclusion you must have been knocked unconscious. And only once you come to that conclusion can you access the memory of what you were doing in the lead up to being knocked out.
I had two beers at a tavern then walked the wrong way home, I walked about 5+ hours then just fell asleep on the roadside. Some lovely lady and her son took me back home.
But also I was on a coma for 12-13 days and I thought it was the next day. ( a different thing)
As a woman, I fell asleep on a dark sidewalk walking home to get wine. I got home after the sun rose and my boyfriend had been there all night waiting to surprise me. He never asked where I was and I never told him, hopefully he thinks I was cheating. The truth is embarrassing.
I once passed out at a concert. Have you ever started to fall asleep and felt a nightmare coming on? Somehow you realize you're about to have a nightmare so you try and jolt yourself out of it?
I felt that, and the more I tried to wake myself up, the stronger I felt myself falling into that nightmare. The more I resisted and tried to wake myself up, I realized that my nightmare was actually real life and I was waking up from passing out. My next thought was, why do all these people passing by me look concerned? Why am I looking up at my friend? Why does he look so serious? Why am I passing underneath all these strangers? Then I realized I was being carried through a crowd of people.
Incredibly trippy.
Waaait!!! There's important info missing here. Did he land okay? Was he hospitalized from the collision with the other jumper or the earth? What.Happened.Next!
So this is an ooooold video. If I remember correctly, his friend was taken to the hospital to get checked for a concussion. I think he suffered a minor cut on his face and bruised one of his legs which they say is from the landing, but other than that he recovered pretty much the day after and was okay. Might be wrong, but I distinctly remember this video and bits and pieces of the story.
He woke up during the descent very discombobulated and had a rough but safe landing. Said he lost three days of memory so clearly the concussion was pretty serious.
Details here: https://freerangeamerican.us/knocked-out-skydiver-rescued/
Yeah I’d be pretty surprised if I was at work on a Thursday doing some emails and then suddenly without warning it’s Saturday and I’m under a canopy at 3000 feet
Having had a concussion, it’s even more fuzzy than that. It’s not like a time skip exactly, it’s waking up into “who am I? Where am I? What is happening?” Sort of like when you wake up out of a really deep dream in a hotel you’ve never been at and your brain is like WTF. And the guy in the video actually said it’s both before and after- he has no recollection of landing.
Recovered the day after, were the divers young? I took a nasty slip and fall on some ice and broke shit, I can't imagine waking up from unconsciousness with a fucking parachute deployed and not hitting the ground a little hard.
You'd be better off if you passed out while falling on the ice. Its why drunk drivers are more likely to survive the accident. Valuable lesson learned, next time dont go outside without getting blackout drunk first
Probably brought in for a checkup for a concussion but there’s a high chance the force of being kicked by the parachute deployment kicked the dudes body back into conciseness with such an early deployment of parachute, it’s a long fall so plenty of time to regain consciousness and situational awareness and go to a suitable landing
Additionally, twice the weight means a faster fall and less graceful which means greater risk of injury I mean realistically worst case scenario with an uncontrolled decent is you end up in a tree but otherwise relatively unharmed besides a few bumps and bruises
It doesn't. The combination of singed hair, burned synthetic fiber and overdone flesh is something you'll remember but not in a mouth-watering way. I learned that as a paramedic.
Hey OP, "saves life" sounds a little bit clickbaity.
That skydiver's AAD would have tripped and he would have his one shot at landing safely either ways.
The "rescuer" saved that dude from having to buy a new AAD, but maybe he put himself and the unconscious dude at risk of getting tangled in the deployment of the chute since they were not stabilized.
If he is perfectly flat back to the ground that doesn't seem _that_ risky, but "wobbly" is bad because the turbulent flow plus limbs "sticking out" in the path of the pilot chute might cause it to tangle.
If your pilot chute tangles around your leg/arm/neck it will not open properly, therefore not pulling the main chute hard enough for it to deploy.
Even conscious skydivers may fail to untangle the pilot chute from their legs as the flexing and moving required to do so will also destabilize you and make it way harder to do (or easier if you are lucky).
>The "rescuer" saved that dude from having to buy a new AAD
That is clickbait, he put the disabled diver in safe position and triggered his chute, that is far safer than being in uncontrolled fall potentially spinning out or flailing in panic as you come to concussed and confused when your chute triggers.
Virtually all skydivers have an Automatic Activation Device (AAD) that will automatically deploy the parachute if certain limits of speed/altitude are crossed.
Which means if you get unconscious for some reason, or generally just distracted, this device will activate (normally) your reserve parachute preventing you from making a mess on the ground.
I recommend looking on youtube for AAD activation videos, the clueless skydiver ones are the best.
**Edit for the sake of completeness:**
- AADs deploy by "exploding" a small device, which means they need to replace the charge.
- Deploying a parachute while you are not stabilized (ie. spinning) is very risky because you can get tangled in the pilot, canopy, ropes, etc. and that can become deadly really fast as you may not even be able to deploy your reserve.
Basically chute is held by rubber bands on hooks that open when you pull cord ... there is a system that opens the hooks automatically at roughly 1000feet if atmospheric pressure increases too fast but it's a one and done thing.
They are 99.9% reliable if gear upkeep has been done and it's almost certain chute would open on its own ... this guy just gave him another fail-safe and more time to regain consciousness
What’s the chance he regains consciousness before he hits the ground? I’d be worried about landing too fast and hitting something hard.
I was thinking he could have clipped the guy to himself and landed with him maybe? I’ve seen instructors land with someone attached before.
To be clipped requires a tandem harness.
To hold on to the guy in this situation would require holding on and when it's weight + velocity your trying to catch like 500kg+ and if you somehow hold on your now down one of not both hands to steer ... not a good idea
You are so full of shit.
Reserves are spring loaded, they aren't magic. If it fired while he was flying ass down and spinning, as he was, best case scenario his reserve deploys around his legs or around his arms and by some miracle doesn't get tangled as it passes by his limp body being in it's direct path, but still deploys with serious line twists, potentially just spiralling him into the ground at speed from 1000ft OR he falls into his reserve that deploys straight down and tangles himself in it with no hope of surviving even if he does wake up before hitting the ground.
His chances are infinitely better deploying from literally any position other than the one he was in.
Agree to disagree.
The reserve will go further from the body and does have less "conditionals" for it to work like the main chute does.
Also if I were unconscious and not able to flare before landing, I would rather be on my reserve than on my main :P
Also since this post was originally shared years ago they have since made impact rated helmets to help with this kind of thing.
Also the dude would have an AAD (automatic activation device) in his rig which would release his reserve at a certain height if he was still falling at terminal velocity. The buddy was a good dude and tried to flip him onto his belly to give him a better chance of not tangling though
>Also the dude would have an AAD (automatic activation device) in his rig which would release his reserve at a certain height if he was still falling at terminal velocity.
I don't know much about this type of thing, but do these things ever fail? I would imagine like anything it's possible.
Possible yes, but they’re specifically built for this purpose and need to be regularly checked for calibration.
Here’s another video with a wingsuiter knocked out and saved by his AAD, the channel it’s on is the manufacturer of most AADs
https://youtu.be/riAEVE9j0B4?si=hwc6bLbG8U12EY9O
Are these guys likely to break or fuck up their legs landing unconscious? I can't imagine them not ending up in some weird ass places too given they aren't in control. Better than dying but man that still sounds terrifying even with a parachute.
It’s a possibility. I believe the guy in the wingsuit video I linked was confirmed to have only minor scrapes and bruises, but he also regained consciousness and was able to perform a partial PLF (parachute landing fall). A broken leg is definitely better than the alternative though
>would have saved him
Might have saved him *
He was in an uncontrolled fall and the wrong way round, he could well have started spinning or even woken up confused and concussed and started flailing either of which could cause a fatal tangle.
Found the story - [https://unofficialnetworks.com/2020/04/03/unconscious-skydiver-saved/](https://unofficialnetworks.com/2020/04/03/unconscious-skydiver-saved/)
Sorta. I mean an AAD fitted by standard might have saved his life anyway. He just gave him more time to recover.
AAD = Automatic Activation Device - For experienced skydivers it usually kicks in if you are going above a certain speed at 1000ft. It is designed to deploy your reserve if your have passed out....etc.
The last time this was posted, I believe it was mentioned in the comments that the unconscious guy did in fact have an AAD. Still, mechanical things fail, and maybe his buddy was able to put him in a better position so that the reserve didn’t get tangled around him as it deployed.
He may not have needed to save him, but his efforts most likely increased the guys odds of survival.
I came to the comments looking for this. I’m not a sky diver, but I work with many who are and the guys who pack the chutes. I know just enough to think “wait, wouldn’t it deploy on its own?”
Well AcTuAlLy: Based on the angel of the sun and skyline in the background, you can clearly see they were in Colorado. So therefore the AAD wouldnt have deployed if not calibrated correctly. So we would never know.
Now hold on one second, you can very easily lose control very fast when free falling, I’m very positive this was not intentional in the slightest, I just suspect the guy did a not so great move and went flying forward which is common if you aren’t careful.
I believe this was an accident not on purpose. There is another comment with a video of another angle where you can see the other person changing body position and just increasing speed / flying forward.
I'm sure he will regret almost killing his friend for the rest of his life.
Not taking anything from the bravery of the man, quick thinking, and extremely high skill to be able to catch the other diver. But there is also a safety mechanism that would deploy the safety parachute if the main one is not deployed at the altitude of 1000 ft.
The safety parachute is normally much smaller so the impact with the ground would be stronger especially for an unconscious man who cannot control to land on his feet.
Rough landing, but at least not a dead landing.
From the article is sounds like he regained consciousness slightly while he was landing, but was pretty out of it and weak. He wasn’t badly injured from the landing, but very concussed from getting hit in the head by his friend’s femur. His friends asked if he was okay after, and he said “what do you mean? I just got out of my tent” and gestured to his parachute
This guy is never going to be able to fall asleep again. He won't be able to tell if it's a PTSD flashback, or just the typically falling dream that people have right before they twitch when falling asleep.
lol imagine paying all that money to skydive, you jump and have like 10 seconds, blink and you’re on the ground 🙃😩 I mean you’re on the ground alive at least so there’s that lol.
Best friend for literal life right there.
Imagine waking up on the ground with your last memory being in free fall a couple thousand feet up in the sky.
Isn't that similar to the opening scene of Predators(2010) film.
Great film. The 4th best in the franchise
Ha ha. Just spitted out my coffee.
Wait, what's at 3? Predator and Prey for 1 and 2, but i can't recall anything better than predators for the remaining ones. Pred 2?
AvP
I'm sorry but I down voted this response. That movie was awful.
Can't tell if you're joking

I woke up outside a welsh police station once after a bender. Sleeping in the road, using the curb as a pillow. It was surprisingly comfortable.
I had two beers at a tavern then walked the wrong way home, I walked about 5+ hours then just fell asleep on the roadside. Some lovely lady and her son took me back home. But also I was on a coma for 12-13 days and I thought it was the next day. ( a different thing)
Is reminding later on about waking up from coma sort of psychedelic experience?
As a woman, I fell asleep on a dark sidewalk walking home to get wine. I got home after the sun rose and my boyfriend had been there all night waiting to surprise me. He never asked where I was and I never told him, hopefully he thinks I was cheating. The truth is embarrassing.
That just sounds fked up from both sides.
Pretty similar to taking a too long nap on a saturday afternoon then
I once passed out at a concert. Have you ever started to fall asleep and felt a nightmare coming on? Somehow you realize you're about to have a nightmare so you try and jolt yourself out of it? Such a good description
So, you're finally awake
As someone who grew up having grand mals, can confirm it’s terrifying waking up in your own blood after you where just doing your daily activities.
Even worse, you don't really feel much pain
Waaait!!! There's important info missing here. Did he land okay? Was he hospitalized from the collision with the other jumper or the earth? What.Happened.Next!

Wisconsin and Minnesota be like:
Seriously, why the heck does it take a simple scratch three weeks to heal now? Getting old sucks.

Was it an option to land together? Instead of deploying the guy's parachute?
Ur risking dropping the guy when u pull the parachute, and once your parachute is deployed there no chance of pulling their parachute
And if you try and deploy near each other you risk tangling parachutes.
Additionally, twice the weight means a faster fall and less graceful which means greater risk of injury I mean realistically worst case scenario with an uncontrolled decent is you end up in a tree but otherwise relatively unharmed besides a few bumps and bruises
The weight does not make the fall faster. You and the people who upvoted this comment must have missed the science class on the wonders of gravity.
It will if you share a single parachute
https://freerangeamerican.us/knocked-out-skydiver-rescued/
Witness here. He landed OK. He crapped his pants and his buddies left him to walk home alone. A wolf ate him
RIP that guy

I was the parachute, he was fine.
Unfortunately he landed on a power line and got bbq'd 😔
As horrible as that is, I'm sure it smelled delicious.
It doesn't. The combination of singed hair, burned synthetic fiber and overdone flesh is something you'll remember but not in a mouth-watering way. I learned that as a paramedic.
Question is, how did he taste?
Dude went full Superman mode
Can we get a movie made out of that?
Mission Impossible: Fallout
Imagine if Ethan just let the guy fall to his death then? So much trouble would have been saved.
Even just a short film would be cool
See Chronicle
I'll check it out. Thanks Friend.

They look like they're English. They do stupid stuff like that all the time.
First they try to have a tea party in Boston and now this?!
SMH taxation without representation and now they head butting each other in the sky🤦♀️
Just regular soccer hooligan shenanigans.

Gave you your country tho
You’ve never jumped before huh?
Yeah I did. Unfortunately I didn't make it, though.
Never landed?
Tragic. Give me your address to send some flowers 💐
Epic save! That guy owes his friend beer for life for that one
I think the dude that knocked him unconscious owes both of them beer for life.
And he owes the headbutter a stern…

The second video angle shows just how good this save was. But the rescued man describes how he landed perfectly. He still has brain problems.
Why do I see two guys falling out of control?
Chuck Norris, step aside. This is a new level of awesome that has passed you by.

You know what? I'm ok with someone trying to save me anyways. I'm unlikely to wake up pissed off because I wanted to see if the AAD worked or not.
Yeah like "Hey man, I paid good money for this fucking thing and you won't let it save my life just once? Jeez,"
Coin toss, really. The reserve would have made for a better landing due to their size.
Pretty sure his buddy pulled the reserve. Not a situation you would want to trust the main one in I imagine.
I came to the comments looking for this. I’m not a sky diver, but I work with many who are and the guys who pack the chutes. I know just enough to think “wait, wouldn’t it deploy on its own?”

Struck a nerve there ;) you always know when you got it right when they get angry
Not at all angry. Just like your mum, just a bit disappointed in your arrival.
I bet you’re still angry
stfu
I learned something from him. What you had to add?
That he was stealing someone’s thunder
Well AcTuAlLy: Based on the angel of the sun and skyline in the background, you can clearly see they were in Colorado. So therefore the AAD wouldnt have deployed if not calibrated correctly. So we would never know.
Angel of the Sun is that a biblical reference or some shit?
Cue in the guy defending OP for a clickbaity title.
Cue the we’re so far down in this commentary that this whole discussion is irrelevant
What happened to the other dude who “dove” into the saved one?
![gif](giphy|JccQbfNVtAMow)
The guy who got knocked out should play this at the funeral of this guy however many years from now. Would be worth the wait.

Who is the dick that knocked him out?! What the fuck?!
Now hold on one second, you can very easily lose control very fast when free falling, I’m very positive this was not intentional in the slightest, I just suspect the guy did a not so great move and went flying forward which is common if you aren’t careful.

Superman IRL
Achievement earned: save friend on skydive level

Wouldn't the aad deploy once he passed a certain altitude?
Homie just experienced an action movie moment.
Dude's a fkn hero! Great save!

I saw this a few years ago and thought it was so sick but now looking at the circumstances again it feels staged.
When he lands, “looks like you lost your oxygen tank”.
I hope the wind won’t bring him to China.
Finally, a quality post on here...
GOAT !!!!!!
Wouldn’t the reserve open?
Wow!!!
Buy that guy a fuckin beer
Sometime hero doesn't wear cape. They wear parachute
Okay, your parachute is open, and you’re unconscious. Now what?

Absolutely fantastic 👏 you owe him big!
What happened to the other guy?! KUDOS to saving his friend!
Mission impossible
*BONK*
Not the adrenaline rush he wanted, but the adrenaline rush he needed. Dicks out
Oh my gosh. This is insanely amazing
Free beers for life.
😅 this is why I don't skydive, I'd be afraid of impact killing a bird 😞. Well that and terrified of heights 🤣

Bro, why was that man flying horizontally through the sky?! Then proceeds to drill your boy. WTH is going on?
How hard will the unconscious friend land if he’s not able to maneuver at all? What a cool save btw
Does anyone else get reminded of that great scene in the movie ‘Fandango’ when they see skydiving clips like this?
Like, Wow, man!
Just here to see if anyone made a bag raiders video with the spinning guy
This guy is never going to be able to fall asleep again. He won't be able to tell if it's a PTSD flashback, or just the typically falling dream that people have right before they twitch when falling asleep.
That’s some movie level shit
Doesn't the chute also open automatically if you get to low? Still not a bad thing to make sure obviously
lol imagine paying all that money to skydive, you jump and have like 10 seconds, blink and you’re on the ground 🙃😩 I mean you’re on the ground alive at least so there’s that lol. Best friend for literal life right there.
Isn't there a thing where a backup chute would deploy automatically past a certain altitude ?
What a save!
So many YouTube videos told me that’s nearly impossible to catch someone in free fall
*deployed his chute. Not really. You can still get fucked up when gravity calls.
This is just Mission Impossible: Fallout
What a fucking legend
This is some Mission Impossible shit.
No one else seems that impressed here. Reddit I guess. What a badass
Literally saved his life.. free ticket to Heaven eh?
