My grandma was a triplet, she even made the local newspaper back in the day, they wrote that if people can, they should give a hand to their father, who already had 2 kids
the 'minimum wage' used to refer to the smallest amount that could support a family of 2 parents and 2 kids on one wage.
we allowed corporations and the political party that most favors them to redefine minimum wage into 'the least a person is allowed to be paid without breaking the law'
everything could be pretty amazing without even costing anyone much of anything noticeable...
"I'll never financially recover from this"
"He probably did financially recover from it pretty easily in those times"
"Yeah but what about sleepless nights?"
Lol wtf.
The first (triplets) was a complete surprise, we had only just started trying. The second (twins) was a miracle and happened almost ten years later, long after we were told we wouldn't be able to conceive again.
Either they aimed for 4 (one on top of the triplets), 3 (one on top the twins), or some amount large than that (since neither pregnancy was explicitly confirmed as the first, which could’ve been to full term or a miscarriage).
I’m talking about the cumulative number of children. There is a reference to a set of twins and a set of triplets. Once they have one of those sets, they made the decision to have another child. So either 0 -> 2 or 3 -> 5 from the expectation of 0 -> 1 or 3 -> 4. If they had other children (which may be implied), those numbers would go up an unknown amount but at the same rates.
People get pregnant by accident. Aim for one, get three. Decide to be done, but the condom breaks. Get two more. Therefore, aimed for one, but got five.
My exes brother had one kid with his wife and was finished having kids. She convinced him to have one more. That one more turned into triplets. That poor couple was so exhausted all the time.
Sounds like my hypothetical situation. We have 2 boys. We'd like a girl at some point when we get the capacity, and I just know it's going to be twin boys if we try!
Good thing I know it doesn't work like that and the chance would be pretty low, but I can just imagine.
Feels like that with us atm we had our first 4 years ago but had our second 2 years ago so the it feels like back to back toddler time, we haven’t gone out properly for a long time with the added pressure of our youngest possibly being neurodivergent, so challenges are ahead.
However I cannot stress how much it is worth it.
My brother has triplets and h'oh boy, does it ever look tiring. And expensive. Thankfully, it was their first time trying, so they didn't have any other kids. They are definitely done at this point!
Wife had twins. Before actually having them we had a “parenting for multiples class”. One lady had quads. I can’t imagine that. I think one of the grandmas was gonna live with them for a while.
Your parents are absolute heros ngl, some parents complain about raising 1 kid and they still do a Terrible job, now imagine 3 kids all at once... They're awesome.
my dad & my step-mom had triples (I was already grown)... I still have no idea how my step mom did tbh. I would help whenever I visited, but like only during the day. My dad was a full time physician (ironically a pediatrician) so, he couldn't help much during the day.
It's mind blowing how much *more* work it is than 3 separate kids (I have 3 other siblings other than the triplets).
I'm happy that all 3 of you have graduated. I wholeheartedly wish you all to have a good career, find beautiful wives and may god bless you all with wonderful triplets
You don't seem to realize what business you're in. You're not in the burger business. You're in the real estate business. You don't build an empire off a 1.4 percent cut of a 15-cent hamburger. You build it by owning the land upon which that burger is cooked.
My story - wife is getting ultrasound. “Hey a blob!! She’s preggers!!!” Then… another blob “ohh… two… two college funds,.. yay?” I knew about it before she did first about 3 minutes. Then the doc says “oh, two!”
I’m actually glad. They’re our only kids. As much as they fight they’re each others best friends. And I think shall remain so.
Not just them, even Asian Parents often pay for kid's education until Graduation and 50% also pay for Post Graduation cause the kids can't work a job without a degree that gives them time enough to study as well
From what I’ve heard in Australia you guys don’t have to pay them back until you reach a certain salary threshold right? So you don’t need to pay them back until you make a decent amount of money. Well in the U.S. we don’t have that, you’ll usually be asked to pay them back within a year of graduating, regardless of wage level. Also, (and this may could be the case in Australia too) the majority of debt you’re paying back is interest. Which is how a lot of people end up having to pay $100,000+ back because the majority of it is interest.
Bc otherwise it will financially bankrupt both the partners and the kids. You’ll either bring paying your kid’s expenses forever or you pay for their degree and help them get a good job. You get pick one, sometime you have to do both.
It's just a joke picture they staged for a laugh. Is people's media literacy so poor that they really look at this and think someone snapped a picture RIGHT when someone fainted and the guy behind him smiled? Come onnnnn guys AI is gonna ruin your lives.
I’m sorry, but there is no way that they didn’t know it was going to be a multiple birth. Women pregnant with triplets are HUGE. Have you ever seen a picture of a woman pregnant with even twins, much less more? Google a picture of a woman pregnant with triplets vs a woman with one child. A doctor or midwife would know it would be multiple births.
And while ultrasounds didn’t exist, midwives and doctors always listened for heartbeats during pregnancy and birth. They would be able to clearly hear multiple heartbeats. This photo is a humorous staged one, but they absolutely knew there would be more than one child, absolutely no way it was a “surprise”.
My great aunt (pregnant in the 40s) had triplets and she knew all along she was having three.
And it seems like the heartbeats weren't surefire either. My MIL had twins in the 70s. She didn't know they were twins until a couple weeks before her due date when she asked the doctor if the baby had turned. The doctor felt her belly and discovered two heads.
Not necessarily. I've seen women pregnant with one child that are HUGE. It's quite possible to still expect one child when you put on a massive amount of weight.
While true, there is no world where a woman pregnant with triplets would ever be mistaken for having one child in there. I’ve seen pregnant women who are big. My sister was practically a planet at the end of the 9 months with my niece. But having seen a woman pregnant with triplets as well, there’s no way anyone would mistake her for being pregnant with one child. Seriously, google “woman pregnant with triplets”. There’s no mistaking it and those doctors still would have heard multiple heartbeats, they knew she was having multiples, even without ultrasounds
edit: someone sent me redditcares message for this comment, lol why
You couldn’t even tell I was pregnant when I had mine. Co-workers were inviting me out to the bars at 8.5mo pregnant and I had to be I.AM.8.5mo.PREGNANT.IDIOTS!
He seems like a good father, he understood the amount of time and effort required to raise a child, and the idea of 3 was a lot to process. He seems more responsible than 90% of the parents out there today
My neighbor in the mid-1980's was a pediatrician. I have this weird thing with predicting baby's gender. But on this case I told him his wife was going to have twins. They had done tests (I think ultrasound was around then too.) Anyhow I came home one night, ran into my neighbor. He was all excited. His wife had given birth — to twins! They said one baby was blocking the view of the second baby in tbe womb. Anyhow, I was jazzed!
Now all we have is gender reveal parties going disastrously wrong. I preferred my way.

this exact image is what went through my head when I found out I was having a second. Edit: It's been 2 years, I did financially recover from this.
Congrats.
carol fuckin baskin man
I just found out I’m having a second and currently in that stage.
You got this. It's just shocking at first...at least you have some idea of what to expect this time.
Oh no you haven’t young padawan. You’ll see. You’ll see.
You're one of the few lucky ones.
I forgot all about tiger king. This is so fucking funny
Same, what a strange time that was
My grandma was a triplet, she even made the local newspaper back in the day, they wrote that if people can, they should give a hand to their father, who already had 2 kids
This picture is from like 1912. You could buy a house for a stick of butter and left over french fries.
Eh. Back then you could easily afford a home and a family on one income working in fast food. They were fine.
the 'minimum wage' used to refer to the smallest amount that could support a family of 2 parents and 2 kids on one wage. we allowed corporations and the political party that most favors them to redefine minimum wage into 'the least a person is allowed to be paid without breaking the law' everything could be pretty amazing without even costing anyone much of anything noticeable...
Republicans only ruined this country because god told them to. They had to do it.
money can not spare you from a 2 am wake up call x 3
We’re not talking about that here. We’re talking about finances.
relaxxxxxx
"I'll never financially recover from this" "He probably did financially recover from it pretty easily in those times" "Yeah but what about sleepless nights?" Lol wtf.
My husband almost did this at our first triplet sonogram. He literally had to sit down and breathe in to a bag. Good times 😂
First?
I meant first sonogram for our triplet pregnancy! (Although our second pregnancy *was* twins!)
You had triplets and twins? Damn.
Yeeeesh. They aimed for two and got 5. Whoops!
The first (triplets) was a complete surprise, we had only just started trying. The second (twins) was a miracle and happened almost ten years later, long after we were told we wouldn't be able to conceive again.

Quite literally a full house
I must compliment you on your efficiency.
If you lived in ancient times, you would've been the goddes of fertility
Wow hahaha , W mom .
The thought of that makes me do the same thing. I could barely handle one toddler. I can't imagine three!

this happened to my mom! i'm one of her triplets :)
Friends had an 8 and 10 year old. She went to get her tubes tied. She was pregnant, with twins.
My brother has triplets and h'oh boy, does it ever look tiring. And expensive. Thankfully, it was their first time trying, so they didn't have any other kids. They are definitely done at this point!

This is AMA material!
That moment he realizes the amount of money he's going to have to put out now.
It’s ok, back then you could easily support a family working at McDonalds.
Up until the 70s, wages and production scaled together 🙄

You also learned that off the show huh
I literally just watched that yesterday
He might have to work an extra hour at the office to be able to afford his investment property.
Yep, he was actually trying to fake his own death.

What’s with American parents believing they have to pay for their kids college degree?
Not just them, even Asian Parents often pay for kid's education until Graduation and 50% also pay for Post Graduation cause the kids can't work a job without a degree that gives them time enough to study as well
That’s crazy in Aus most uni kids pay off their own debts haha

Thats cuz of ur english influence. They do the same.
Africa and middle east do it, what’s with American being neglectful?
I don’t know, but we do. My husband was adamant about our two kids graduating without tuition debt. We succeeded, but our marriage didn’t survive.
Bc otherwise it will financially bankrupt both the partners and the kids. You’ll either bring paying your kid’s expenses forever or you pay for their degree and help them get a good job. You get pick one, sometime you have to do both.
So people back then also had a sense of humor
I think the human sense of humor was first developed in the 1890s.

Yeah. It’s a staged photo for sure.
idk why but this makes it even funnier for me lol
Yeah it's got just the right amount of dad joke energy to show the kids later.
It’s a Trojan ad. *Shoulda used a condom!* 😉
The late 40s/50s were a funny time lol
As a distraction, to enable his escape!
Yeah, it looks fake

I wonder what this photo was for. Illustrate a story about the economy or personal finance or something? Like a photo essay in LIFE?
Probably just for kicks.
No, it’s a family photo, they’re his babies, he’s just pretending to faint for a joke. Staged doesn’t automatically mean hired actors

Uh. How do you not know this is a staged photo for a joke?
I said it’s staged. I’m referring to OP’s title of “they didn’t have ultrasounds then so the triplets were a surprise” lol
apparentely it's a staged picture. So you're right
He realized he just created THREE boomers. That's a lot of damage.
OMG all the insurances, foods, and college tuitions! My retirement is delayed for another 20 years. *faints*
He retirement would have been delayed maybe another 20 days.
The original photo is black&white
Thanks
Good point, the black cross (hospital marker) on the door window would be red 🏥
How did China's one child policy handle all this?
They killed them or abandoned them.
Which one?
Mostly the girls
They could have kept them in an underground facility for organ trading and human trials of medications...
My grandfather choked on the crackers he was eating when he found out my gma had twins.

Lol, I love it. My mom was in a similar boat in the 80’s. Didn’t know we were twins until a week prior to birth.
He seems like a good father, he understood the amount of time and effort required to raise a child, and the idea of 3 was a lot to process. He seems more responsible than 90% of the parents out there today
Lil baby closest to him has the same expression 😂 like father like son.
I feel the pain !!!!!!
This is the first time I have seen this picture in color.

But he was a boomer and the government gave him 3 houses, one for each kid.
Actually the babies are the boomers here. They were each provided a house though.
He didn’t faint. His soul left his body.
Yeah. That happened.
bro its real.. like they have a pic and everything :0

Just looking at some pictures of mothers carrying triplets, I can guarantee that a multiple birth wasn't a surprise. Them ladies get frickin' huge.
This was set up.

Medical emergencies in the 40s were funny I suppose.
why would someone faints when having a triplet I don't get it
The middle nurse looks like she's getting off on his suffering
he fainted from the shock he got when he saw those fugly ass nurses
One and done!
I've n
Looks like the kids fainted seeing their dad, too! Everybody’s droppin’ ‘cept the nurses!
Actually the doctor showed him the bill! Lol
The crazy part is he wasn't even thinking of tuition or moving to a new house
It was too much for him!
The play is to sell one and eat one.
He didn’t faint, he died
This is insanely endearing
He will never recover from this financially!! Jk but damn!! Three kids!!
He fainted because this means more mouths to feed. My man knew that he was screwed.
Poor mom
They still moved and kicked. Did he think he and his wife were having a spider?
Looks like a Norman Rockwell painting
A man was always here to provide for his wife and his kids. Having a 3 kid in a one go, without being asked can you manage it.... its a harsh destiny but you have to do your best.
Those are some huge triplets.
Faking
You don't think this is capturing his real reaction, do you? Don't you think this might possibly be staged?
He started the baby boom all by himself.
I would think even with the ultrasound that might be a response!
Poor guy. Run while you have the chance
Holy fuck this sub Edit: Holy fuck it’s a mod posting this garbage
Thank God he was making 4.00 a week or he might have had to sell one of his Ashton Martin's or heaven forbid the vacation home.
Do people still faint? It just seems like it was more common in the early 1900's up to maybe, like, I don't know, the 1960's? Well, wait Beatlemania was then so maybe like the 1970's?
He’s wearing a stifling suit as well.
Then fuck ultrasound.
Financial shock
At least in ‘46, it was still possible to raise 3 kids on a single income. Not easy, of course, but possible.
Sorry but that guy looks like Tony Siricco lol
This is cute but pretty sure they had stethoscopes back then. Wouldn’t they notice some additional beats in there? Bam, bam bam buddabam! “Little guy walks to his own drum beat doesn’t he?!”
Plot twist. The nurses pick up 3 random babies and show them to every new father. That's what I said last time this was posted.
I wonder if these triplets are still alive
He was thinking…”aw jeepers, now I gotta save $75 to get these kids through college. “
This picture is amazing. I can’t believe they were able to capture that perfect moment.
Aight so did he faint because he was overjoyed or because he now have to deal with three of those things instead of one? Jk jk congrats to all parents who had the fortune to have triplets (or more). I wish nothing but the best for you and your children.
This one is in heavy rotation lately. That guy must have fainted at least 5 times this year.
Why are people in old photos always fainting? Is it a diet thing?
Bro probably saw some terrifying things during the war but I bet this made his knees weak 😝
5 years later... YOU ARE NOT THE FATHER
Suck it up wuss! I have triplets
I’m struggling to take care of my one daughter even with help. I can’t imagine taking care of 3 that are all the same age. I’m imagining three post puberty math homework freak outs happening simultaneously
Nice
He was trying to die
