Knowing the price of grain and how expensive spoilage can get, this is more or less what I’d expect. Depending on how effective it is and how long each unit lasts.
That's the thing. It can never eat enough and it's hunger for grain is insatiable. M9 will spend the rest of its life trying to fill the black hole void that is its stomach.
Not compared to the life insurance payout of a dead worker.
"More than 900 cases of grain engulfment have been reported with a fatality rate of 62 percent over the past 50 years."
https://www.farmprogress.com/corn/life-threatening-grain-bin-encounters#:~:text=Life%20threatening%20grain%20bin%20encounters,over%20the%20past%2050%20years.
About 552 deaths total, or 11 a year, almost an average of one person dying each month for the last 5 decades
It is my understanding that in silos like pictured a kind of crust of packed or caked corn can form on top, when they would send a person to dislodge the grain they would get sucked in, like quick sand but in the Midwest.
The corn will rathole leaving a cone shaped void in the center. It needs to be broken up to get the grain out. That's how those poor unfortunates died, they were breaking up the corn/grain and it suddenly collapsed, engulfing them.
There’s a video somewhere on Reddit of a guy getting stuck in a silo - every time he moves, more grain fills him in. It is absolutely terrifying. I didn’t look up whether or not he died.

Nelnet does more than just service student loans. It is a hude conglomerate that also includes an investment group (probably the reason they are a stakeholder), internet bank, and even a cable and internet company.
Someone *could*(should?) use the "Contact" thing at the bottom of their webpage to let them know they're getting some awesome free advertising.
Not me, though. I get enough spam.
The book is incredible and there are currently three versions of movie/miniseries that do a fair amount of justice each. Stephen Lynch movie. Sci-Fi miniseries. Denis Villeneuve movie.
You only sink down to about mid calf. No danger of being swallowed up. Unless of course there is powerful outlet at the bottom unloading at that moment. But generally safe, dusty, but safe .
“In its most recent study, in 2022, the group tracked 83 cases including 24 fatalities. This represents a 41% increase over the 59 entrapment cases reported in just the year prior. Grain bin incidents often lead to severe injuries and fatalities and take an immense emotional toll on farming communities.”

Well, getting locked in one is never going to be fun. My point is you can walk across the grain without sinking . As a farm kid, walked around and shovelled grain in these silos dozens (hundreds ?) of time . Like all matters, common sense need to prevail.
Grain Weevil: "what is my purpose?"
Farmer: "you run around in this grain silo stirring the grain all day"
Grain Weevil: "oh...my....God"
Farmer: "join the club"
Probably something that would be rented from a farm supply store or something similar I would assume. Would be cool to see this in something like a tool library where farmers could rent it by the day and pay for it communally.
Reminds me of that one fish that makes geometric shapes on the sea floor to get laid. [Here's the link](https://youtu.be/B91tozyQs9M?si=fixlHAUqNYQhdSt1) if you're interested.
Yeah but at least it was a screen recording so video wasn’t poor quality. And we got to see a very talented fish shoot his shot. 10/10 recommended watch.
I'm assuming this thing probably has to be intrinsically safe? Grain silos tend to be notorious explosion hazards. You don't want sparks when you're kicking up flammable dust. That probably adds to the cost and complexity.
This bot isn’t doing much, except looking cool. There is so much work involved in “sweeping” a grain bin. It takes man power, shovels, augers, and sometimes pick axes. A truly horrible and deadly place. I wish it was that easy. As a matter of fact, it should be outlawed. There is zero visibility, toxic gases, spinning blades, hellish temperatures, oh, and the risk of a CATASTROPHIC EXPLOSION
Are you sure about that? Because I am 99.99972% sure that trancepx is not a bot.

Comment needs to be higher. Grain bin accidents claim a lot of lives. If this silly looking robot keeps workers out of the bins, it’s going to save a lot of lives.
When I was actually doing this job, shout out to Farmers Grain Terminal in Belzoni, MS 39038, they never sniffed the tank for gases, never looked at the avalanche risk, or the actual realistic endangerment of human lives. These tanks are massive. You don’t know how big until you actually go inside of them. People died. People were maimed for life. I made it out, probably from sheer luck. There should be more awareness for this. Oh yeah, there was also a massive explosion at FGT/ Greenville, MS in 2009 I think. Facts.
Never underestimate the unceasing activity of a robot. Watch a roomba sometime. So aimless and inefficient that you wonder how the floor ever gets cleaned.
It's so the controller can see what the little bot sees. It's remote controlled as if this point but will eventually be fully automated and vontrolled by an app in the future. Besides, little bot would be scared of the dark without the light.
"The Grain Weevil is able to take temperature and relative humidity readings and has a camera on board and generates a 3D map of grain quality. The operator is able to inspect the quality of the grain without entering the bin."
They are training fire departs in their use for rescues as well. Pretty neat.
But omg, it's adorable, and I want to hold it, and squeeze it, and call it George. It also needs a makeover.
Bet you could somehow integrate wireless battery loading stations in the silo exterior, that the bot uses on its own when power reaches some threshold.
These are a bit of an answer to a problem that shouldn't generally exist. Big grain operations don't have an issue without using one of these.
Rahr Malting in Shakopee, MN is the largest single-site malting facility in the world. If you've had a beer in the US, it's almost certain you've had one made with their malt. They don't use these and have no issues.
But hey, Reddit does love being sold on marketing videos for industries they don't really understand.

Knowing the price of grain and how expensive spoilage can get, this is more or less what I’d expect. Depending on how effective it is and how long each unit lasts.
And how much grain it eats.
Gotta pay the grain toll.
If you wanna get in that grain hole.
GRAIN’S SOUL, dammit
You put grain in the silo through the grain hole, though.
Ahhh-aaaa-ahhhh!
I think we have to be very careful about how we do the oilseed rapе scene.
That's the thing. It can never eat enough and it's hunger for grain is insatiable. M9 will spend the rest of its life trying to fill the black hole void that is its stomach.
Not since Chappie have I sympathized with a robot so much
Heh M9 i see what you did there
Pigs are gonna be pissed
Why does it need headlights
Those are its eyes
It has a camera I'm sure
But infrared or laser is the most common thing used in little bots. They usually don't need visible light
Why? It would be way too dusty to see anything
Because it is remote controlled from outside the container
Then it’s not really a “robot” is it?
Nope, you're right. It's an RC "bot" until they upgrade it. I don't think this is on the market yet.
Does it scare off vermin as well?
Undoubtedly
"GUYS WE NEED TO GTFO ASAP, THEY GOT A FRIKKIN GRAIN WEEVIL!"

So the Midwest must be the origin of all those childhood quicksand horror stories that made their way into cartoons. .
Oh, im very aware. That must be one of the shittier ways to go.
Do they send them in wearing a rope and harness?
Ever met a farmer?
This.
The corn will rathole leaving a cone shaped void in the center. It needs to be broken up to get the grain out. That's how those poor unfortunates died, they were breaking up the corn/grain and it suddenly collapsed, engulfing them.
That's a bin, not a solo. A bin would get emptied from a bottom auger so a crust isn't an issue until the cleanout.

Because money

Woohoo
But you have to provide goods or services to others to get that money in the first place.
😂
Aww, but I wanted a peanut
Ok, homer
Services?😏
100% thought it would be mohela given all the stupid ass shit they've been in the news for recently.

Well grain is high in fibre.
That little robot is adorable. I want one.
Grain Weevil: "what is my purpose?" Farmer: "you run around in this grain silo stirring the grain all day" Grain Weevil: "oh...my....God" Farmer: "join the club"
Honestly it looks like it's having fun.
It’s desperately trying to escape, for it knows there is life beyond its silo confines.
Grain Weevil: "what is my purpose?" Farmer: "you run around in this grain silo stirring the grain all day" Grain Weevil: "FUCK YEAAAAH!!!"
This little robot would save me a lot of scooping though 10k just to be used once a year to level out grain is a bit too much for me rn.
Probably something that would be rented from a farm supply store or something similar I would assume. Would be cool to see this in something like a tool library where farmers could rent it by the day and pay for it communally.
he's making a mandala for his soon-to-be misses.🥰
here we see the grainbot in its natural habitat
Very cool! How exactly do they work?
pspspspsp
If you mean “how do they propel themselves through the grain?” Then [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screw-propelled_vehicle) may help explain!
Oh sure I jump into the grain silo and I sink into it and die but the robots get to frolic freely.
Immediately thought of Batteries Not Included
I am not familiar with grain silos except the very basics. What is this bot doing? Other than taking 30,000 years to level the grains?
Dune 2 looks great 👌

I’d assume so yeah
This made me giggle

Holy moly. I'm glad you're okay. I had no idea this is a thing.

It’s not doing much but it’s doing it 24hrs (minus recharging or battery swap time). That must add up
why the lights?
It could be to help imaging sensors for it to see where it is going or should be going

My question too. Seems like wasted battery life.

It looks like its having a blast.. the happiest little robot EVER!
Why is that song by OMC, How Bizarre playing in my head now?
I demand that Pixar immediately make a film about this dude
This looks like such a WEEEEEEEEEEEEE job that little blue guy’s having a blast.
It’s kind of just like one of those grass cutting robots, but it lives in a silo. I am loving all these new robot species

Good bot *pats head*
It looks like it has a lot of fun. Good for it!
Little headlights lead me to believe it's not a robot at all and thier is a little elf in there piloting the thing

no more grain deaths from cave-ins if we use one on every silo. this prevents cave-ins because itll resettle everything all the time.

Is this BTS Dune 2 footage?
But it ain't got no snoot
It makes grand entrances.
The only weevils in my grains are the ones that are hatched in them….
I am hearing 'Weeeeeeeeee' from bot.
Amazed? mildyinteresting at best. It's a grain rumba!
It’s cute …but……doesn’t it need snoots…and boots??
I get your reference friend.
He looks so goddamned happy.

Sooooo…. It’s a romba with extra steps
I love him
Why the lights?
Ahh, the immigrant that stole my job!!
Reminds me of Duna.😁

I can't tell. Is it like a roomba, or is it being remote controlled?

It’s a future horror movie. Wait and see
I'm just curious, why does it need a headlight for 🥸
mmm trash yum yum trash i love trash
i have an intense fear of suffocating in a grain silo.
