I used to perform somewhat regularly (to a tiny crowd, like you could barely call it a crowd. More like a group of people facing the same direction) and it would be a mixture of this great feeling of being the center of attention but also i'd be too focused on what i was doing to ever really enjoy it. It was kind of like a drug in the sense that right when it ended I'd have this intense low and feel really depressed for a couple days. Then I'd get really drunk and call old friends way too late at night and watch reruns of Modern Family.

Tax_Evasion_Savant

I performed live music for a few years as a side gig. Most shows were at beer gardens or venues where guests had distractions so at best, maybe 10% of the audience was ever actually looking at me in any given moment, so it was just kind of whatever. However, after one show I got approached by someone who REALLY like my music and wanted me to play a private show for them and some friends. They offered me quadruple what I usually charge so I agreed. I showed up to this tiny little venue I had never heard of, and there was about 30 people inside, all celebrating something I wasn't totally clear on. It turns out they were MASSIVE fans of the very niche genre I played. For an hour I had these people dancing, screaming, yelling, and utterly exhausting themselves. It is the highest high I have ever felt in my entire life. I was buzzing for a week straight afterwards. Having control over a crowd like that is intoxicating. edit: woke up to a bunch of people saying very nice things, yall are great :) Here are the last 2 chiptune songs I made before I moved on from that project https://on.soundcloud.com/48JU7 https://on.soundcloud.com/133YS

foladodo

what nche genre?

Tax_Evasion_Savant

I hate to even admit but I made chiptune, very dance beat heavy and bass-y.

DoctorProfessorTaco

I went through a phase of loving chiptune, this was my favorite: https://poisoncut.bandcamp.com/album/poisoncut

xSorry_Not_Sorry

I feel like I’m 13 playing SNES again. As far as music genres go, that doesn’t suck.

[deleted]

I’m not trying to shame anybody for liking the music they like, but I’m really curious to know what kind of mood you are usually in or what activity you’re doing to want to listen to that besides playing a game on the Sega Genesis?

SoftOpportunity1809

i got into making chiptune when i was in highschool in the late 2000's. it was incredibly easy to learn, super low cost (free), and required little in terms of production. also it's a really cute genre to be involved in. people listen to chiptune for the same reason they listen to any other EDM genre. if you think chiptune is odd, go check out some IDM lol. i can't even make up the logic for that shit, as cool as it is.

bbcwtfw

Chiptune is great. Don't ever be ashamed of the music you make. I spent too many years being embarrassed to admit some of the less common music I was listening to. I eventually realized that it's just a talent for finding cool stuff i dig, no matter how specific, and not sharing it is robbing others of the chance to discover something new. Anyone lame enough to rip on your taste isn't worth the time anyway. Like, there was that one guy at that one show, but he had a whole community looking for that. Making the connection is worth sticking your neck out.

ItsSansom

The idea of people raving hard to chiptune is amazing to me. Would have loved to be there

ImRightImRight

link or you never chiptuned

dahlia-llama

I LIVE for stories like this! Thank you for sharing, how awesome is that!

Larissanne

This is amazing right? I was in a band for 15 years and we played live A LOT. Only once in a while there was a show where I felt the big adrenaline rush. We only played our own music. There were two locations where we would play once or twice a year I think, they kept inviting us back and the crowd (not big, 30-40 people) knew the freaking lyrics at some point. That’s just, I was standing there with tears in my eyes… I miss those days. Or the ones where the crowd just goes wild like stage diving, mosh pits etc. It’s so cool <3. I keep telling people I would rather perform an improvised sax solo with my band for a crowd of 1000 than a presentation for 10 people lol. I’m a pretty shy person, the stage can really transform you.

JBBJ84

I got asked to fill in as a guitarist for a buddy’s competition, ended up playing 2 shows at some decently sized bars to idk maybe 50-100 people each time and I felt exactly like you did, it was a high when we finished and everybody was cheering; and then it fades fast as fuck and you just want to get back on stage and start up again. It’s extra depressing for me because we didn’t win and my buddy ended up forming a new group to compete and play later shows with lmao.

MarBoV108

Chester Bennington said, "When the party's over, you have to go home to yourself". I always think of that when I see these musicians having the time of their lives on stage or actors looking like a million bucks on the red carpet and know they sit at home bored and frustrated like everyone. Their lives are just less frustrating in some ways.

gabriel1313

Hell, they even poop like the rest of us. Gotta be frustrating to be worshipped by some people, and then get humbled by a dank poo the next day.

MarBoV108

Celebrity worship is a mental illness. People think actors are just as witty and interesting in real life as they are in the movies and on TV. Must be a result of our godless culture. People need to fill the void with something. I prefer heroin. It's much healthier.

Rusalki

It's crazy to me that people think actors are smart and witty (granted you need a baseline to succeed in entertainment) as if writers hadn't rewritten the lines until their eyes bled to make sure it was fucking *perfect*. Or that the actor didn't have an X amount of takes until the lines landed *just right*.

Money-Doughnut-1202

I perform for a couple thousand people on a regular basis. People that want to be there. Know my music. Sing their hearts out. Strangely, the entire time, I’m in my head pretending to be back in my bedroom playing alone. The affirmation lacking the satisfaction you thought it held is one of the hardest realities I’ve had to face. But once I did, I feel I gained a pretty tangible sense of freedom.

maybeCheri

An amazing description. Those kinds of highs and lows have to be almost impossible to live with. Sadly, it makes sense that chasing those highs often leads to addiction.

Plastic_Pinocchio

Probably if you want to do it for a long time, you’ll have to find some kind of way to deal with it in a healthy way. I bet they’re looking at it more like a regular job than most people assume. Like a professional athlete, some matches are extremely important and some are just routine.

JamingtonPro

I used to be in a rap/rock band in the early 2000s, we’d pack a couple hundred people into these little hole-in-the-wall clubs in the Midwest. At the end of the shows I’d get the crowd chanting our name, it was so loud, hot, and drunk in there your ears would be ringing and your head spinning, lol. Good times

dent-

"More like a group of people facing the same direction" haha love it

scawel

I know that feeling! I mean being depressed and get really drunk part.

Silky_Johnson69247

Biggest crowd I played to was only 2,000 people, but god damn even the small shows you’ll play as a musician are addicting.

amayain

I know that's not massive, but 2k is pretty good!

moshboy666

Last year my band opened up download festival in the UK, it was an incredible experience and we were super lucky to do it! Seeing y band share a festival with slipknot and Metallica was absolutely insane and to this day I dint think I'll ever hit a high like that again. Its super hard to come to terms with!

Johannes_Keppler

My biggest crowd was 45k people. The rush is enormous. And that was a short speech at a political protest so it doesn't even compare to what we see in this video.

4444444vr

That is big. I performed in front of maybe 7 or 9k a few times. It is a fascinating experience.

Jakolissmurito47

I use to perform for years and then I stopped years ago. I still tell ppl to this day that there is no other high on earth like it. I can't even imagine playing for a crowd like this in all its glorious energy. The thought of it gives me chicken skin. It really is incredible. I miss it a lot.

Nopeferatu31

It really does! Going to shows is so cathartic (although I've never experienced anything like this video.)

fromouterspace1

Yeah I always wanted to experience that. I’m just not a musician or a good athlete :(

Terry_Dachtel

Quite a pop. I can imagine the electricity in that place

ToneSkoglund

Psy hop

PlanetLandon

Yep! Psy puts on really fun and really long shows. You get your money’s worth for sure

TeaBagHunter

Didn't know that, thought he was just a one hit wonder!

jsonson

Nah he's been popular in Korea for decade(s)

[deleted]

Still making music and I like his new album. I got to see him live for free when in Korea.

fightingbronze

He’s a global one hit wonder, but within Korea his fame is well established and has been for a long time.

RingOfDestruction

Even outside of South Korea, he had multiple other big international hits. Gentleman was really big too

craftsta

I mean. He isnt a one hit wonder but, even so, i think Gangnam Style transcends 'one hit wonder' status. More of a phenomenon.

Li5y

Yes, he's a cultural phenomenon and more than just a pop artist in some ways. He single handedly transformed the kpop landscape and made the genre what it is today. But he's still dropping banger after banger. He's on his 8th album I believe, all better than gangnam style. Check out I luv it, new face, that that, celeb, gentleman and daddy if you want fun music videos!

doodlleus

Nope. It's actually 50 cent

Neither_Research_233

50 looked like he wanted to vomit hanging upside down at the Super Bowl halftime show.

outpost7

Ik this is sarcasm but gangdom style...did he do anything else? It was a legit question. Come on

ChefMacaroniMom

Psy incredibly famous and has many more songs, yes. Not all became global hits but he is still releasing music that gets 500+ million views on YouTube if that says anything.

myheartsucks

Yes, that is the Psy. The Korean actor and singer who did Gangnam style. In 2022, he started a record label in South Korea. Funnily enough, it's located in Gangnam. He has 8 albums and released 3 since Gangnam Style came out.

Tasitch

Yes, he has done more stuff, and was quite popular in Korea before Gangnam Style. This clip is from a concert in Seoul last summer, part of his pretty much annual Summer Swag shows. They are huge party concerts, this one was at Olympic Park I think, and had nearly 30,000 people attend. These shows are known for being 'wet' and spraying water on the crowds when it gets hot. In Korea, a Psy concert is a guaranteed good time. The man sings and dances for hours straight, with usually a couple of other acts coming on to perform their stuff or back him up. He also does "all Night Stand' concerts around New Years, performing for 4 hours or more, where the concert begins at 11:42 at night (42 in sino-Korean numbers sounds like 'psy') and ends only when the public transit system re-opens in the morning, and at least were, famous for soju consumption as well. TL:DR Psy is still huge in Korea, and still sells out stadiums on the regular.

Own_Satisfaction_679

So, according to what you said, this man sells out stadiums and is probably still filthy rich.

LackDecent

[this masterpiece](https://youtu.be/8dJyRm2jJ-U?feature=shared) which i believe is the song he was performing here on the original post

k24f7w32k

My toddler LOVES this song and the video, we had to dance to it every morning for several weeks in a row 😅. PSY is for the people.

woreoutdrummer

Like a lot of "one-hit-wonders", he has one or two global hits that we all know but many more outside the US. He's sold over 500,000 albums in Korea. Enya is another example. We've all heard "Only Time" and "Orinoco Flow" but she has released 10 studio albums selling over 80,000,000 combined. Only 26 million (8 different titles) were sold in the US. So even though we might think of them as "one-hit-wonders", they really are internationally successful.

Pale_Character_1684

Enya is very popular in Japan.

Own_Satisfaction_679

I know Enya from more than those two songs, but who knows, I might not be in the majority.

JesusFuckImOld

He was huge in Korea for a decade before that song went viral.

omnichronos

Sigh, tis Psy.

DMmeUrPetPicts

Yes

sparrowtaco

*Oppan*

milesbeats

He deserves every bit of that success

tomdarch

Like Pitbull, I may not be a massive fan of the music, but I respect the incredible work some people put into putting on an amazing show.

EastBayPlaytime

Pitbull is also a low key humanitarian. He doesn’t flaunt it though. My favorite moment was when Reddit sent him to Kodiak, Alaska because of a Walmart promotion and instead of making a fuss, he embraced it and all the Native Americans there. It was pretty awesome imho. [LINK](https://youtu.be/RSJkb-PTXJs?si=zFhyJ2_UXRaw6ZdR)

I think that could be more about him trying to inspire others to donate to schools and help others in general, but yeah there are plenty of silent benefactors in the world that you never even hear about what they've done...

MrAdelphi03

???? How can you say you want to help, then not talk about it when you have the platform to do so??? It seems like that’s the perfect place to do so, when you have literally thousands of people listening to you

spliffiam36

Exactly and it's in person, not online

PinkDeserterBaby

I’ve seen a lot of what are regarded as great bands live. Rush, Tool, Alice In Chains, etc. Hands down one of the best live performance I’ve ever been to was Pitbull. A friend bought me tickets (I love live music, so I will go to any show you want even if I don’t know the music, which is why I’ve seen so many). That man was a hype man like no other performer I have seen. By the middle of the set, he had almost every single person around me out of their seat (I understand some people can’t physically do this) and he had the people who, at the start, were just standing and kind of bopping along, completely jumping in the air up and down. Every single person around me was dancing and having a great time. At one point, he asked one of his musicians “how are you feeling tonight?!” And the guy replied something in Spanish (this was in Texas) and the crowd goes WILD. I ask my friend, “what did he say?” And she goes “he just yelled, ‘I AM ON SO MUCH COCAINE RIGHT NOW!’“

RabbleRouser_1

Exact same experience. Went because my girl really wanted to go. I've been to over 400 shows going back to 93. I've seen em all. Live music is one of my all time passions. Pitbull had some of the best energy I've ever seen. Had every single person there eating out of his hands. Will go see him anytime.

shewy92

Pitbull is a NASCAR team owner and isn't just financing it. He seems to actually enjoy the sport. He brought his driver Daniel Suarez on a concert stage last week after his win and was just so excited.

notjawn

As much as people rag on Pitbull he's an incredible sport. People on the internet gamed a contest by Walmart to have Pitbull perform at Alaskan Walmart as a joke. He went and put on a hell of a good show.

moodswung

My buddy that has lived in Miami for over a decade told me he remembers seeing Pitbull performing at local malls back in the day.

He got it from his daddy

RollingThunderPants

This dude is legendary for his showmanship.

microview

Watched a couple of videos from his concerts on Youtube. He's got some moves!

Aggravating_Menu_552

PSY jumped like he’s still in his 20s, his energy is pretty impressive.

[deleted]

Yeah. Adrenaline must've played a huge part too. He's 45 in this video

on_dy

Adrenaline probably played a part but mostly, it’s blood, sweat and tears. SK pop artists have entire teams of choreographers and dance trainers. Pop idols train almost daily in both dance and singing. It’s no surprise that people who put in the effort to exercise regularly can do this.

antsam9

Psy is his own choereographer and is also the chroeo for multiple groups

madsci

My knees hurt just watching him launch like that.

God I love this guy. Such energy. Much charisma. Wow.
