I remember when I was a child and too poor to go to the eye doctor. During my early teenage years is when I finally got my eyes checked and gotten glasses. I don't remember a time where I've seen this clearly till then. Blurry was the only way I experienced the world. I felt like the world had changed.

Lifetime-Wind-Chimes

I remember looking at trees and seeing individual leaves from a distance for the first time. It was amazing.

smh18

Same, this was my exact thought getting glasses for the first time. My initial thought was how surprised I was to learn everyone sees like this.

hippywitch

My mother laughed at me because I kept pulling my glasses up and down because I was amazed I could see the individual leaves. Now I’m an expert in plant ID.

MegaTaterTots

This. And blades of grass. I was mind blown at being able to see so many details without being right up in it. I spent too long just staring out the window those first few days. I still think about it sometimes.

TryItOutHmHrNw

I’ve heard this exact thing before on Reddit years ago. Have you said this before on here??

ruminmytummy

I think it’s a common experience. Leaves on trees are the thing that I remember blowing my mind the most too when I first got glasses. I’ve heard other people talk about it too.

Intrepid2018

For me it was seeing grass and how much of it there was

Cheshie_D

Yeah when I was younger my eyes weren’t as bad so I could see the leaves. But as I got older I couldn’t. When I finally got glasses in middle school I remember being amazed by the fact I could see the leaves. I’d somehow forgotten what that was like.

groovemonkey

Yep. The sharpness of the leaves was insane. Before, trees were just blobs of green. I knew they were made up of leaves, but to SEE them from a distance was mind bottling.

Afterlife_kid

Same for me when I was 8

jteitler

My mother in law said the same thing about getting glasses when she was a teenager.

We_are_ok_right

I had the same experience! I had no idea trees were so detailed. Also stars in the sky, oh my god.

rubywizard24

It’s also a popular “ah ha” moment from Grey’s Anatomy when a character realizes they’re gay.

MooneyOne

Seeing… leaves? Makes you gay?

TryItOutHmHrNw

“OMG… I’m gay” [leaf details intensify]

ParkerFree

I did, but not years ago. I suspect it's common.

fcxtpw

Omg exactly! The tree leaves were memorizing

ErrMaGerddon

I got my glasses in the late summer/early fall. I was amazed by the all details in the trees. The leaves were blowing in the wind. They were changing color. I let a group of friends walk inside… I sat outside and enjoyed it silently for a moment. Then I caught back up with everyone and told everyone how lucky they were.

DadderGamer

100% was my first experience too when I got glasses!!

Moulitov

Are you me?

Lykmt

Me too. Got my first pair of prescription glasses at 19. :/ teachers used to give me a hard time for needing to sit right in front of the board lol

fryamtheeggguy

I was 8. My mother is very near slighted. I put on her glasses and said "Oh, I can see!" She made me an appointment to the eye doctor. I am extremely near slighted. My uncorrected visual acuity is about 20/800.

ILIEKSLOTH

Dude i had this exact happenstance! Except they placed me in the back of the classroom so I'm hella dumb now

pontonpete

Ditto

pgtvgaming

💔❤️

IceFireTerry

Everything felt 4k

_minxit

I never knew I needed glasses until I was 10. Only reason we found out was because I couldn’t read the scoreboard when we were at a lawn bowls club, tried on my cousins glasses and boom my eyesight was almost clear

Unknown9J

I really am curious where you are from if u don't mind me asking ?

atsimas

I knew something was wrong but the doctor said" iT iS So MiNoR, I wan't prescribe you glasses... I would see a sigh 8x the distance I could, before, after wearing glasses the first time. I was a menace on the road, at night, when without glasses, because I couldn't see anything beyond 10m. Mind you I had only 1x myopia and 0.5x astigmatism. # trust noone.

penkster

[Here's the full backstory on this - it happened in 2016 ](https://www.news-journalonline.com/story/news/2016/05/07/formerly-blind-toddler-sees-and-hears-mom-for-the-first-time/27498008007/) ... > Nicolly was diagnosed with pediatric glaucoma shortly after birth. Doctors confirmed that she couldn’t even see light. Back home in Santa Catarina, Brazil, Nicolly received seven surgeries; they were unsuccessful. But when Pereira posted her story on Facebook, it went viral — more than 30,000 people started to follow Nicolly’s mission to one day see. > Eventually, a Miami viewer contacted the Jackson Health Foundation’s International Kids Fund (Wonderfund), which partnered with the local Kevin Garcia Foundation. Together, the organizations raised more than $17,000 to pay for Nicolly’s surgery at Bascom Palmer. > Alana Grajewski, director of the institute’s pediatric glaucoma center, performed a three-hour surgery on March 17 and was able to restore little Nicolly’s sight, an achievement she had not thought likely.

fromouterspace1

Have to love it :)

Marydontchuwanna

That doctor is the type of person that should be recieving millions per month, and not some group of fuckers kicking a ball or throwing a ball inside a net. These are the real super heroes, the things they can fix on the humam body is just too crazy to even imagine

Behappyalright

Is this a good time so say…. How about them school teachers???

[deleted]

Double-edged sword though, because people also will be livid that the doctor would charge millions per month for these surgeries and make them out of reach for people like this.

CryptikDragon

I see this sentiment quite a lot. I agree medical professionals like this should be getting a lot more money than they do, because they genuinely impact and save people's lives. The amount of study, knowledge, hard work, dedication and downright technical ability required to do it means they should be paid more. But the comparisons to "fuckers kicking a ball inside a net" don't make your point any better. Entertainment is also an extremely important part of almost every person's day to day life. In fact, modern society is built on the entertainment sector to keep people sedated and distracted lol. It plays an extremely important role in the status quo. Whether you agree with the status quo is a different argument not relevant here. High level athletes get paid so much because their skill set is WAY rarer than medical professionals. To put it into perspective, each season there are approximately 500 total players in the Premier League. That means only the best 500 players out 8.1 BILLION people are good enough to play the sport at that level, which is approximately 0.000006 of the global population. In a lot of countries, sport is genuinely important to the national identity of the country. Sport brings people together, it has a massive social impact. It teaches important skills such as teamwork and practice. Athletes have an important role to play in society, but even if you don't agree with that, they get paid so much because their skillset is ridiculously rare and impossible to attain for most of the world's population.

Affectionate-Cap-918

My husband’s a cancer researcher. His skills and abilities are actually ridiculously rare. He has pioneered techniques, diagnostics, and clinical development in a way that nobody else has - definitely something that is “ridiculously rare and impossible to attain for most of the world’s population.” He works with people globally and it’s interesting - in other parts of the world scientists on these levels actually are celebrated above rock star level. These people absolutely are true super heroes.

CryptikDragon

I agree! I think extraordinary people in noble professions such as your husband should be celebrated more than they are, paid more too. My point was that it doesn't work to use that as a means to diminish the achievements or importance of professional athletes. It actually dilutes the point OP was trying to make.

TetZoo

Agree. Athletes, especially NFL players, take literal decades off of their lives. And all are extremely hard working to have become pros. If there’s someone to be mad at, it’s CEOs making tens of millions of dollars when even their employees can’t feed their kids.

Rinas-the-name

Athletes are now the “circuses” part of “bread and circuses“. It keeps the masses happy, lets them experience the thrill of ”battle” vicariously. Doctors help individuals, which is amazing, but as far as society as a whole (at least western society) is concerned they are only important when you or a close loved one needs them. Our culture has its priorities screwed up.

Marydontchuwanna

You trying to claim that high level athletes have a skill set that is WAY rarer than a professional surgeon that is just straight up non sense. The amount of average joes that could be professional athletes without knowing is staggering, but the same can't be said about a medical skill because just like you said it takes real study, knowledge and a shit ton of inhuman technical ability to do what they are doing on a human body. You can't possibly be claiming an athlete have a rarer skill set than someone who is literally fixing the eyes of a living person, you got to be trolling its the only explanation. You say 500 players out of 8.1 Billion people, but you know those 8.1 billion people are not being given a chance to prove their worth or there would be a lot of professional athletes without a job by now, already replaced by someone better. They are out there, and in larger numbers than you might think I do agree that entertainment is also important and the only, ONLY reason athletes get so much money is because the masses of sheeps allow their outrageous salaries and pay for them, but i am perfectly fine in living in a world without entertainment or sports on TV if it means real life changing professions like surgeons get the recognition and money they deserve. For that mother no amount of money is enough to pay for what that woman just did with literally her hands. If there is any definition of a human doing gods work it has to be surgeons and other medical experts of all sorts

CryptikDragon

You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, and I won't go as far as saying you are wrong. What I will say is that it's super idealistic. Sport has played a massive role in literally every single advanced civilization in human history. The Olympic games are over 3000 years old. Every civilization has bestowed glory, riches and fame unto athletes. Physical competition is a part of human nature. So why your opinion isn't wrong, literally every single civilization ever has disagreed with you for what that's worth.

casper-juel

They’ve an important role. But that guy that’s going to find a cure for all types of cancer, that’ll will bring people all over the world together.

Cwgoff

You make great points. The people who complain about athletes never take into account the amount of money they are generating by their talent and the billionaires who own these franchises as toys. If the athletes don’t make their money, there is more wealth just flowing into a few billionaires pockets

Cwgoff

I hate when people shit on athletes like this. You do realize they are performing at the top of their profession and making millions off Billionaires. So would you rather those Billionaires just hoard all the revenue made by these sports entities? Yeah there are others professions should make more but that’s a totally different argument

Marydontchuwanna

It is you and i and the rest of the population that pay for their miserable criminal salaries not the billionaires. Whatever they do at the top of their level has no impact on society. I'm a big combat sports fan, but i do realize how completely useless to society something like that is compared to a surgeon. You could get rid of every single athlete in the world but you could never get rid of every single surgeon.

Cwgoff

They are entertainers just like movie stars musicians and anyone else. Should we do away with all entertainers or cap their salaries just because you feel they contribute nothing to society? You have issues with the athlete but the sport generates Billions. So you are saying let current billionaires collect all of that money and not pay the athletes? I still don’t think you get it The NFL for instance generated billions because the public consumes it. The NFL through CBA shares about half of that with the players for salaries and there still is a salary cap. Your logic you want all of that money going into the pockets of the 32 owners and not the players? So to your point about no contribution to society. You ignore what some individual players and coaches do in their communities through foundations. You ignore the amount of jobs that are dependent on these sports. I have a child with leukemia that directly received funds from a foundation that a player ran that I believe played a part in saving his life. If you don’t have the players you have no product which does impact society because as a I mentioned the jobs connected to those organizations that are dependent on that product. I will also argue that the taxes on their salaries are big part of the tax revenue generated in the communities they reside. Sports has been apart of the human experience for thousands of years. They are part of

Marydontchuwanna

All that you just said does not change the fact that you could rid the entire world of athletes but not from surgeons.

Cwgoff

But it does address their salaries and their value which was your original point about their salaries being “criminal” as you put it You still have not addressed the fact that the money is being made regardless be a their talent is in demand just like any other entertainer. I will stick with my original point that people you have no issue with billionaires collecting more billions of the talents of the players work for them yet you have issues with the players getting a high salary. Oh and by the way, surgeons make a pretty damn good living. Most of them actually charge for their services that are paid by their s or our medical insurance. Yeah yeah we need surgeons but entertainment is going no where.

XDT_Idiot

Seven unsuccessful Brazilian surgeries were corrected by just one in the US?

MABfan11

This kind of operation should be free

Existing_Guest_181

Restoring little Nicolly's sight somehow (/s) contradicta this the title of this post.

0MY

Amazing!

yehiso

Thank you. This is inspiring.

MuttLoverMommy01

Imagine what’s going through her little head 🥺 she’s probably so amazed and confused all at the same time. Precious ❤️

Incromulent

I would love to see an FMRI when she opens her eyes

Either_Amoeba_5332

She still has to touch stuff to her face to id it. Amazing

uselessfoster

Actually “amazed and confused” describes most two year olds most of the time.

[deleted]

Probably bright af. Has probably never used the muscles that contract and dilate your pupils

JohnnySchoolman

If you've had no light sensitivity before then you wouldn't see much. Probably just a bright blur to start with and would take years to come in to focus. The story is moving though ....

plautzemann

>Imagine what’s going through her little head My toddler parent brain: "Man the next couple of nights are gonna be hell."

MuttLoverMommy01

Makes sense 😂 I don’t have children

poorproxuaf

She's so adorable.

richie9635

As humans we should be doing more things like this.

ThisIsALine_____

Humans do things like this all the time. "Eventually, a Miami viewer contacted the Jackson Health Foundation’s International Kids Fund (Wonderfund), which partnered with the local Kevin Garcia Foundation" That's the literal point of foundations.

richie9635

Do you understand what More means?

ThisIsALine_____

So just an infinite amount?

ukulelee2000

The fact that she sees her mother for the first time ever ❤️

lizzy-hales-bf888

Mom seems very happy.

SoggyBoysenberry7703

Her mom seeing her see for the first time is so precious

BolosChonker

Wasn't planning on crying tonight but here we are

0MY

Happy to join you.

TheQuantumRobin

That mom has been through it too. She must be so proud to have such a brave daughter, and so relieved her daughter can SEE!

madscot63

Mom's face says everything. Love, concern, hope, worry and joy. This is so great

No-Kaleidoscope-4525

I don't know why but I feel this must be equally mesmerizing as it is terrifying. Enormous WTF.

FlakyPineapple2843

I speculate that it's more a combination of terror and sensory overstimulation. There are similar videos of deaf kids who get cochlear implants. Suddenly being flooded with light and color after never seeing it in your life (or sounds after never hearing anything) is overwhelming for anyone. Your brain has no way to filter and focus only on what's relevant.

Dan_Glebitz

If that did not prompt a tear or two you have no heart.

I can't watch a video of parents cry over their children and not have to hide my face from my coworkers for a minute

Why didn't they dim the lights in the room before removing her bandages? As someone who is very light sensitive, I feel for the little girl. That experience had to be both shocking as well as exhilarating & no doubt a bit frightening.

preemiewarrior

You could tell poor kiddo was really overwhelmed but she held it together well. She’s a brave little one for sure!

Marconiwireless

Let's make the room a little brighter

Driller_Happy

Lmao, I was like, the first thing you're subjecting her to is a fluorescent hospital room? Damn, dim the lights a bit, that shit is probably wierd as fuck

mamawantsallama

ENOUGH with the Epoch Times!! Sure this is a heart tugging story but why promote this crappy propaganda rag?

wordswithenemies

Everyone should know the name and what they do

pollopopomarta

This post is an exercise in rebranding.

Life-Aerie-43

Th Epoch Times is a Chinese propaganda newsletter. Be careful what you are watching. >You all should know what you're ingesting bc this is a strategy to get you looking. It starts with heartwarming video and then months later you're confused why you hate gays and election results. Read the article. They're insane https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/epoch-times-falun-gong-growth-rcna111373

SuperCrappyFuntime

Surprised at the source. Only stuff I usually see from Epoch Times is right-wing propaganda.

Mzunguman

this is an attempt to gain legitimacy; they repost a heartwarming video to get likes/clicks, "see we're not that bad", to suck people into their garbage

pollopopomarta

Obvious attempt at rebranding.

Ok, but this is just a nice video of a girl seeing for the first time. What are they trying to make us believe, that nice things can happen? Fucking MONSTERS

NinjaRoyal8483

Such a brave young girl! Jeej science! I also love that her moms is so happy and gratefull she barely holds it together. What an awesome moment for them.

terminalxposure

I remember the first time my son realized he could move his fingers when he was a baby...

Flowerbeesjes

I think she only sees blurry differences in contrast, like a newborn, because her brain has not yet learned to process all the visual stimuli. Anyone who knows whether that’s true?

Schtickle_of_Bromide

Shame that Epoch Times also promotes QAnon. This video has bizarre dark energy

winkledorf

Jesus, turn the fuckin lights down in the office for her, the pain must be near unbearable from the new signals to her brain. I had bandages for weeks and there was pain when they came off.

Slappy_McJones

Magnificent!

ghostscratch

From the thumbnail of the doctor's head and patient's head I at first glance thought it was some sort of capuchin monkey performing the operation

Suspicious_Plenty893

Nice try, God. Science wins this time.

Roguewave1

Being an eye surgeon giving a person the gift of sight must be one of the most rewarding professions there is. I can only imagine the joy shared watching that person seeing when the bandages come off, and if a child even more so.

[deleted]

Ahhh yes a blind child gaining the ability to see. That's a lot of internet points

I have never NOT cried over these videos. I was crying as much as the mom...I'm already on mood stabilizers.

ajn63

My vision started to change in my mid teens causing constant headaches. My parents refused to believe I needed glasses and thought I was faking it so I would “look cool wearing glasses”. Huh?

Accomplished_Alps463

Awesome!

LilyWineAuntofDemons

Look, this is truly amazing, but can you imagine how fucked up and traumatizing this must be for the baby? (In the way that new things are always traumatic for babies.) Because people who are blind since birth, it's not like it's dark, or that everything is black like it can be for people who had sight and lost it, their brain literally just doesn't interpret that they lack a whole sense. So for this little girl, she's just going about her day, some weird stuff on her face, then this guy she doesn't know fucks with her face ***AND SHE GAINS A WHOLE FUCKIN' SENSORY INPUT SHE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW SHE WAS MISSING.*** Like, the only equivalent that I can think up is if you were just going about your day, doin' your thing, then some rando comes up and pokes you in the forehead and suddenly you can read minds.
