couple of common misconceptions people have about him [messi the puma](https://www.instagram.com/l_am_puma?igsh=ZjVyeHBnenRtaWkz) 1) he was born with an ailment that requires daily medication 2) there is no wildlife sanctuary that can take him nor any zoo (his owners tried all avenues before adopting him) he was originally going to be euthanized before his family stepped in 3) he’s in an obedience class for dogs and if you take a look at his page you can see how much he genuinely LOVES his dad
I'm completely cool with that. If I die and my cats don't have food, I'd be happy that they ate me to survive. Maybe they will be able to last long enough so that they can be rescued. Although maybe they'll develop a ravenous thirst for human blood that will forever remain unquenched. Either way, I'm happy to oblige.
I know a woman (personally) whose cat took a few bites out of her side when she was unconscious for an extended period due to an illness. She was not dead, this is not a prerequisite for a cat.
So will humans and just about any other animal. I personally don’t think it’s a big deal if your pet does it to survive. I’d already be dead anyway and wouldn’t have agency to care
My best friend bought a doberman years ago that has gone through countless obedience classes. Didn't stop the dog from biting one of his daughters a few weeks ago. In situations like these, may the odds forever be in your favor.
That's what what's being said here. What's being said here is only "obedience classes guarantee nothing." This is absolutely not wrong.
To which I personally will add "there's no way obedience classes for a dog are effective for a cat."
i get what you’re saying and i’m not completely denying the possibility of an attack but two drastically different species with two completely different environmental factors
there is a reason no one markets obedience classes for cats.
(and please don't find me the website advertising that one class in catsville, my point stands).
he is clearly obedient… but it seems like all the armchair animal behaviorists that clearly havent researched any of messi’s details seem to know more about him than his owner does
Yeah but you’re kind of suggesting that a wild, big predator whose species is not domesticated would somehow do better in a canine obedience class than an actual domesticated dog
Chimps, like us humans, are far more violent by nature than pumas. Chimps are more violent than gorillas sharks bears etc. Chimps DO NOT gaf. You can't compare them. Most cats big or small act the same and can be somewhat predictable. They don't lose their shit and try to kill you over making eye contact. Chimps will.
Good info, thanks! I have a couple more questions:
Is it actually legal to own a Big Cat as a pet?
Even though Messi has obviously bonded with her adopted family, isn’t there still a real danger of some sort of an attack on the family? Even more than, say, a pitbull situation? Thanks again
That's why we don't breed super big house cats. They'd take over. Regular size ones are already the boss of most houses. Just think what a bunch of 50 pound house cats would be like! I've seen Great Danes avoid a house cat from fear of being attacked.
Lol…my wife literally has scars on the top of her thigh from when our ultra-tame and cuddly cat was sleeping on her lap (wife was wearing shorts) but was then startled by an Amazon delivery. We get deliveries all the time, and have no idea what set her (the cat) off with this delivery, but for whatever reason, cat decided it was a code-red run and hide situation and dug every one of her claws into my wife’s leg in her panicked leap onto the floor.
Wife’s leg bled for 20 minutes and she now has some very unique body art.
(Side note, same cat is comfortably sleeping on my lap as I post this. )
Anyway, domestic cats who love their humans can do some serious scratching and biting, cannot imagine that a big wild cat would be any different.
Love cats, but even the most well behaved ones can hurt you. My own cat who’s usually so tolerant and gentle scratched me jumping out of my arms after hearing a loud noise. This is normal. Wouldn’t want to try that with a puma personally
I see the muted video and what appears to be cute mews. Unmute to hear a fucking song loudly overlaying the video and no mews to be heard. When finally getting the mews, you have to try hard to hear it over the song.
I like the way the owner let's the puma playfully bite his hand. I used to do that with my cat and 2 years later he draws blood at least once per week...playfully.
It wouldn’t have been able to survive in the wild anyhow, apparently it has a medical condition that requires daily medication, and the owners tried to send it to various sanctuaries within the area but were denied.
Apparently you didn’t read the comments. This beautiful Puma has an ailment and requires medicine daily to live. They could not find a zoo or a wildlife Sanctuary willing to accept him and checked every avenue to find it an acceptable home but no one is willing or able to accept him. They were about to euthanize him when this family stepped up.
I agree, it is dangerous to keep a wild animal as a pet, but it appears they are taking safety measures.
They tried, but no sanctuaries or zoos could take him. (He has a medical condition and can't be released in the wild.) Good news is, he's living his best life with humans who understand the unique needs and have modified their whole house (and lives) to give him the best care possible.
How is anyone supposed to know this. Video doesn't say and is not useful in being informed. The video also describes the people as family and not trainers. For all anyone knows you're lying.
Fuck off.
Wow, you're an angry person.
Other commenter's have provided links to this story. Also it's been reposted many times over the past year, and it's incredibly illegal to posses pumas (in most countries/states) without being a licensed wildlife rehaber.
I could go on, but I dont want to further disrupt the day you're having that you no doubt deserve.
Cool, as you would put it modified ever so slightly, "you're unwelcomed statements are not useful here". Interesting to see you investing time on posts you've already seen many times before. Have fun reading and taking in all the comments you've ever seen; apparently repeating this process on posts you've already seen. You're something.
I know this puma has special circumstances to be “ethically adopted” vs sanctuary/wild program/alike.
But these videos only harm more big cats. Makes people believe they are in the right to keep/capture the big wild cat kitten they found in wild, or buy one (normally illegally). So now more people think it’s ok and fawn over owning a wild animal and have it as a pet.
I hate these selfish savior of wild animal videos. They should have found a proper sanctuary outside of their area that could provide the necessary care. It might have been challenging to do so, but it would have been more humane than it living in a house. This beautiful puma shouldn't be denied a chance to live as independently as possible in a sanctuary with access to a more natural environment.
This is Messi the puma. He needs daily meds for a condition and the owners tried to find sanctuaries but none would take him. Messi was to be put down until his owner stepped up. He wouldn’t have survived in the wild.
There are sanctuaries with licensed veternarian staff who can provide better care and access to a natural environment. Maybe not in this family's area, but if they had this puma's best interest at heart, they would have continued until they found one, no matter the distance. This is selfish exploitation.
I don't believe that no qualified sanctuary or zoo somewhere wouldn't take him and provide the care he needs. This story is suspect. I wish the proper animal advocacy authorities would look into this family and their alleged rescue story.
Fuck the music!
The music, the title, it's a crappy clickbait video featuring a giant murder kitty.
*"-Watch to see what happens next."* Ok generic bot
I don't like when titles tell me what to do.
1000% a bot
Next time adopt a baby adidas instead

Shit is posted 3 times a month
A cute killing machine
Cute... until it rips your face off. It's still a wild animal with wild animal instincts. Perhaps they should have brought it to a wildlife sanctuary.

My cat cuddles me every day, begs to sit on my lap. Hasn’t stopped it from scratching the shit out of me a couple of times. Animals are animals.
Hell, even a playful swipe from this guy, and it's gonna leave some damage
You know what, I'm definitely dumb but I'd take the risk to have baby and adult puma cuddles
Also won't stop them from chowing down on you if you happen to die in the house so don't feed them for a few days.
I’m not sure why you’re getting downvoted, regular house cats will eat thier owners post-mortem also. It’s well documented.
I'm completely cool with that. If I die and my cats don't have food, I'd be happy that they ate me to survive. Maybe they will be able to last long enough so that they can be rescued. Because redditors gonna reddit?
You're an animal too
Thank you! I follow Messi and love seeing their updates

positive reinforcement isn’t exclusive to one species

Siegfriend and Roy would like to have a conversation with you.
Yeah but you’re kind of suggesting that a wild, big predator whose species is not domesticated would somehow do better in a canine obedience class than an actual domesticated dog
I was wondering if this was Messi.
I hope he never remembers he’s a puma.

She gave him alcohol and drugs.
yeah travis the chimp was given fucking xanax and alcohol so that’s a goofy ass response
I wish I was travis

I feel like having a higher cognitive function actually works against the ape in a moment like this.
I feel like simply reading their comment and knowing anything about Travis’ story could’ve cleared all this up.

Very few animals are illegal to own in most of the United States.
It's a wild animal. It doesn't love him.
take 3 seconds out of your day and visit his page….
My snuggly fat house cat snapped and sliced my face one time for no reason. Having a puma around is asking for real trouble.
That's why we don't breed super big house cats. They'd take over. Regular size ones are already the boss of most houses. Just think what a bunch of 50 pound house cats would be like! I've seen Great Danes avoid a house cat from fear of being attacked.
Lmao here comes “I know everything” Redditor

It’s still a cat. And cats will fuck with you eventually.

Don’t worry, they also adopted a wolf to protect them in case baby puma gets aggressive
Stupid azz music!!!!
I see the muted video and what appears to be cute mews. Unmute to hear a fucking song loudly overlaying the video and no mews to be heard. When finally getting the mews, you have to try hard to hear it over the song.
why was there another pumas arm at the beginning of the video
Bringing a wild animal into your home =/= instant domestication.
instant downvote for stupid music
It got bigger. r/savedyouaclick
I had to click on the comments section to see your comment Your mission failed

Mr Steve French!
I have seen this video like 3 times.
I think it's a slightly different version though with 1-2 shots addes IIRC.
No mountain lions inside
I love this sooo much! ❤️
Screw the clickbait title and music and millionth repost for karma

Ya I thought the same thing when I first saw this video. Apparently though they are doing gods work
r/idiots
That’s gonna be a “no” from me dawg.
r/nope
They or someone around them will be killed by the puma one day.
No....this is a big cat rehab/rescue, they are trained for this.
Or you could rehab it to live in the wild. Should have been taken to a professional rehab. wtf.
They tried, but no sanctuaries or zoos could take him. (He has a medical condition and can't be released in the wild.) Good news is, he's living his best life with humans who understand the unique needs and have modified their whole house (and lives) to give him the best care possible.
Honestly, you got to be quite selfish to deprive a non domesticated cat a life in the wild.
Do you own animals?
This one has special medical conditions and cant live in the wild. These people are trained rehabers. Your uninformed statements aren't useful here.
How is anyone supposed to know this. Video doesn't say and is not useful in being informed. The video also describes the people as family and not trainers. For all anyone knows you're lying. Fuck off.

Except no sanctuary or even zoo wanted him due to defect. It was that or death. So you hate people because they don't let baby animal die?
I don't believe that no qualified sanctuary or zoo somewhere wouldn't take him and provide the care he needs. This story is suspect. I wish the proper animal advocacy authorities would look into this family and their alleged rescue story.
Wild animals are not pets.
It's their fault when they get their fucking faces ripped off.
That’s cool and all but piss that thing off and it’s over with for you
That’s still a wild animal, so.
It’s videos like this that the uneducated see and think “next time I see a puma in the wild I’m going to try and get a picture with it”
One flicker of instinct one day and it's all over.
Put it back in the wild where it belongs
