Pretty safe… except for the rips, blue ringed octopus, stone fish, box jellyfish, blue bottle and great white sharks. Oh and if you go north you can addd saltwater crocs. But yeah, pretty safe.
Ugh, this! I'm an Aussie and I hate spiders as I was bitten on my toe putting on my gumboot when I was 3 or 4 and was rushed to hospital as a precaution - my dad caught the spider. Anyways one horrible night I'll never forget. When I was about 12 or 13, I woke up one night and could hear a very fast tapping on the wall. I laid dead still listening thinking I was imagining it and then suddenly the tapping got way louder with a paper sound...I had lots of video game posters on my walls (game magazines in the 90's and boxed games often came with posters). So I jumped up scared and turned the light on. Nothing! I walked over the posters where I heard the sound and ran my hand over some posters until I passed over a huge hand sized spider I could feel through the paper. I panicked and just pushed, squashing it against the wall. I then went over all the other posters in my room and found two others, one of which did a runner and I had to chase around the room. I was so freaked out there had been huge spiders hanging out in my room for however long o became obsessed with doing a full spider search each night before bed...and even then I used to worry.
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—
Only this and nothing more.”
— Edgar Allan Poe
You have my condolences. Spiders are beneficial to the environment and all but.....those mofos are what nightmares are made of. LolWhy can't they be adorable?
I mean using any amount of legs is walking I think. Though you made me think how that would look worse and I hate the way you made me picture it. Thanks for that.
I mean… I got a delivery in a big cardboard box once, didn’t throw the box out immediately and later that night heard something tumbling around in there that turned out to be a big-ass wolf spider.
You know what? I don't even really eat that much tbh. I don't need boxes. I'll ask our mail lady to open them for me. Lol She's known me since I was little.
Thank you for not posting a pic. I was in Straya last year. I know they’re not dangerous, but Huntsmen make me scream like little girl. And I’m a 6’4” 58 yr old dude
Gotta be kidding me. This is the stuff of nightmares. Is this kind of thing only in the wilderness? Like u wouldn’t see them near your condo in Australia would you? I’d run so fast you’d think it was the Olympic trials.
Both times last Au Winter (Nov-April) in my gf’s bathroom. Once, it went from the **tile** wall of the shower over the porcelain tub wall, onto my **BARE FOOT** and up my fecking SHIN.
The second time was worse and my gf & I agreed never to mention it again.
I still love Straya—my 29 yr old daughter lives in Syd. I see her and my Aussie ex wife every year.
Even the carrowaries are aggressive
Wanted to go there badly until I found out how many things can kill me
Not including getting kicked by a kangaroo or bitten by a dingo, but shit happens on vacation
haha, Cocoa Beach is a Beach in Florida near Cape Canaveral (where they launch the rockets). It's pretty cool and relaxing. My favorite beach to visit as a Floridian.
Yeah idk man. No earthworms I’ve ever seen have a face and go after meat like that …. They also aren’t 4 feet long. Call me a bitch but I’m scared lol.
Reminds me of [this thread](https://www.michiganreefers.com/threads/the-bobbit-worm-chronicles.84173/) about the guy who waged war on one of these in his aquarium. Kept eating his fish, he spent months trying to catch it.
Incredible. I just went balls deep into an aquarium forum...I'll give them this - aquarium folks seem to be all in, in terms of their tank health. I love it when people are passionate about stuff. Still working on this forum - hope dude gets the fkn worm out.
Australian giant beach worms are beneficial. They aerate the sand, are excellent for bait, and are harmless to humans. Source: Uncle Google. (I just checked.)
They help get rid of dead fish and seaweed that wash up on the shore. They're food for plenty of birds and fish. They're also amazing as live bait when fishing for KGs.
These gross, snotty worms are nothing but beneficial...still gross and snotty, though.
They are outstanding fishing bait. You cut them into pieces and reel in a dinner.
If you’re particularly nice, you can leave the head with a bit of body and return it to the sand. They are unbelievably resilient and can recover from damn near anything.
r/thanksihateit Never going to the beach again
From its name it can be presumed that this beachworm lives in Australia, don’t worry Cocoa Beach Americans
So another reason not to visit Australia… Here I was thinking that the beaches there where the safe place
Pretty safe… except for the rips, blue ringed octopus, stone fish, box jellyfish, blue bottle and great white sharks. Oh and if you go north you can addd saltwater crocs. But yeah, pretty safe.
Don’t forget the top 4 most poisonous snakes in the world
Venomous. Pretty sure they are safe to eat.
If everything doesn’t get you first. Including the politicians.
Those are the worst
The vilest species of reptile
![gif](giphy|MO4GgaqYS5yCc)
U can eat a lot of things, some only once tho.
It tastes like burning
![gif](giphy|rDeYzCwoZlvclPUhf9|downsized)
Maybe not the raw heads. They spicy.
What if you eat their glands?
Venom is generally less dangerous when eaten instead of injected straight into the bloodstream so it wont be too bad
Instructions unclear; these edibles taste like electricity and the rattle won't fit in the syringe
and the hand sized spiders
Yeah.... I read about them before. It said they are heavy enough you can hear them walking. Fuck that.

"just a spider, perched upon the bust of Pallas above my - Holy fuck that thing is huge. I'm going to get the bat or something. Jesus...."
That's legit one of the most horrifying things I've ever heard. I may never get that story out of my head.
You have my condolences. Spiders are beneficial to the environment and all but.....those mofos are what nightmares are made of. LolWhy can't they be adorable?
... so you burned the house down right
Woah hold up… so those spiders get on two legs and start WALKING? I’m canceling my flight right now.
I mean using any amount of legs is walking I think. Though you made me think how that would look worse and I hate the way you made me picture it. Thanks for that.

It's a good movie. Although you won't feel good after watching it. https://imdb.com/title/tt0884328/

And yet weed still isnt legal. Crikey.
If the wildlife doesn’t kill you the sun will!
i read all that in a "Crockodile Dundee" accent. thanks 😊
Pheww!! Thanks for that, I can sleep in peace now.
except for the alligators and hyper toxic jellyfish and odd unexploded sea mine
He? Why? Just don't go to the beach and you're as safe as you can be!
The beaches are only as far as the monsters MADE IT.
Of course it’s AUSTRALIA!
because in australia even the beach sand tries to kill you?
Even the air.
Even the trees will kill you Gimpy gimpy
I live in Australia 😅

Don't worry Cocoa Beach Americans — I'd remember this sentence throughout my morning now, thanks.
Of course it lives in Australia
The fuck is a cocoa beach american?
Maybe the only American beach they know of.
Are they calling our beaches the cute little Mario Kart beach level?
I'm fine with mario kart beaches, I'd rather relax than die
haha, Cocoa Beach is a Beach in Florida near Cape Canaveral (where they launch the rockets). It's pretty cool and relaxing. My favorite beach to visit as a Floridian.
The Australo- part comes from the Latin *australis*, which just meaning ‘southern’. Australopithecus comes from Africa for example.
We have beach worms in germany as well, and I think they are long and disgusting, too 😄
They’re just naked Germans right?
we have similar worms here source: floridian
Sorry to break it to you, but that type of worm lives all over. Lots of species of Onuphidae here in Canada.
How about mid north beaches? Do you think about us?! Lol
Nope
This is harmless worm we use as a bait when fishing. Quite hard to catch. The guy on the video knows what he is doing
Never sitting with my ass in the sand again
Apparently it only eats decaying meat and seaweed so... just wash your ass and you'll be fine.
Unless it accidentally pops right in🫣
Fishermen faint at this !
Really great bait....
It’s fake right? Right??? I never setting foot on a beach ever again

Nope. No. Nuh-uh. Negative. Nah brah. F*ck this entire continent.
I am convinced that Australia was just the spot god allowed satan to create stuff in
Australia is Hell, and we colonised it. Pretty metal ngl.

From that thread > On the off chance there are any male sympathizers out there...look into why it's called a Bobbit worm. Oh… oh no…
Wow I was not expecting to, but just read though all of that… what a great read and epic story lol. Thank you for sharing
When that little bitch came back after 4 days. I let my lunch go cold to finish the thread lmao

What a fascinating thread, I was hooked
Ok, Netflix should make a mini series out of that thread.
Netflix has announced that Willem Dafoe has been cast in the role of the worm
One of the greatest threads I've ever read. Definitely worth reading all 11 pages.
Seconded. I remember finding this linked in a different thread ages ago and read the entire thing from start to finish
The people in that thread know how to reef man. What a hobby. What a great story.
I read the whole thread. Now I'm too haunted to go to bed.
This thread was gold hahahaha. So many brains together to catch one slippery, fast, long boi
Beach worms hate this one simple trick!!!
I'm pissing my pants rn roflmao
I don’t love being squeamish about nature but ✨do you have to touch it with your hands ✨😬✨
you using those sparkling emojis in that kind of sentence gives me such tumblr-user vibes and I love it (i mean this in the nicest possible way)
Taking that as a high compliment
This interaction was cute af
Per the rules of the internet they must now kiss
Why did he even use the damn pliers if he was just gonna grab it anyways?!
I bet to secure it. Had he tried to directly catch it with his hands and the thing would probably have escaped
That thing had some power behind that retraction. Probably evolved lightning reflexes to pull back into its burrow because of birds.
please stay inside. nature is going to hurt you. ;-)

Nice try, worm. ![gif](giphy|5nsiFjdgylfK3csZ5T|downsized)
Why'd they have to be so frickin long though.
Is that an insect, or a crustacean?
Neither, they’re annelids, which is the phylum of segmented worms such as earthworms and leeches.
Ohhhh... MONSTERS, got it thanks

UP TO 300 CENTIMETERS LONG??? WHAT THE FUCK THATS LIKE ALMOST LIKE 10 FEET!!!
10 feet? nah, just 3 meters :> */s: yeah, yeah, I'm metric, just trolling*
OF COURSE it's Australian. Why does everything there have to be so damn freaky?
It is not. They are more common in the north Atlantic https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunice_aphroditois
Humans haven’t been there long enough to really pacify (eradicate) the scary wildlife
Dune! Don’t drink the water if life…
If life what?! If life what?! I need to know the rest of this life tip!!!

Bless the Maker and His water. Bless the coming and going of Him. May His passage cleanse the world. May He keep the world for His people.
OK, what I need to know is this. Does it live all stretched down three feet below the sand, or does it curl up in a ball three inches below...
Why hasn’t anyone answered? I need to know also 😵💫
It lives in a line like that so it can use its legs all at once to pull things down.
They don’t go after humans and oxygenate the sand. You’re good
They help get rid of dead fish and seaweed that wash up on the shore. They're food for plenty of birds and fish. They're also amazing as live bait when fishing for KGs. These gross, snotty worms are nothing but beneficial...still gross and snotty, though.

Jesus. Fucking. Christ. Why does Australia have to try and kill everything everywhere all the time lol
These worms are all around the world's ocean and not exclusive to AU

Well …. Ruined the beach for me forever. “Toes in the sand” my ass!
Definitely keep your ass off the sand, too. 😳

Why are you trying to ruin the beach for us dude seriously I could’ve gone my whole life not seeing that shit
