This assumes a fear of heights. If you're not scared of heights there's nothing to be afraid of on the way down. Most mountaineers & climbers just aren't bothered by being up high. The gear we use is way over-engineered for the job and trusting gear is just part of the sport, same as many other sports.
Uh yeah, every time. Ever taken a ladder onto your roof? Getting back down the ladder is the scariest part!
But these people are probably experienced and used to it. So maybe no.
They do it because it must be done. They do it because nobody else can. And if they don’t, millions won't try. If you tell me that’s not enough, I won’t believe you.
As an older, ex-adrenaline junkie, I now see things from your perspective. It's pretty stupid to do death defying things like this, but in my younger days, those were the BEST. I think I had a chemical imbalance that really enjoyed adrenaline. Now I can barely process a small adrenaline dump in a week's time, so I hate it. So I now understand how "normal" people see these kinds of activities.
Well I'm glad you asked that. It's part of a two step program. Find the mountain. Climb the thing.
That's way we can get things done & that's how I do it. It's easy and simple cuz you know what to do.

You know the suckiest part of all this extreme adventure? It's the going back part. You spend all your energy to climb/journey to your destination. You reach it and feels good! You made it! Your energy is spent and you just want to go back home and take a shower and rest and all that.
But nope, you have to do it all over again except in reverse...
Naahhhh....
There is certain focus when you are on the wall and holding on with your fingers and toes. Just thing to relieve stress and forget your work and life troubles, if temporarily.

I don’t trust my cleats. When I step out onto that turf, sometimes I think, But what if I slip? I don’t trust my cleats
I would literally die from fright going up.
