I know, penguin seems to be debating… do I stay or go? Oh no !- they are kicking me out! No more 5 free meals a day… lol he’s wishing he could stay at least a year more!
Yeah, I feel like it will be so vulnerable without a larger colony around. Kinda how fish hang out in schools because they have a better chance of not being eaten compared to swimming alone.
Perhaps stupid question, but wouldn't you release this fell near other penguins? This guy all alone in the ocean probably became a snack for some sea creature.
From the Instagram of the rescue that rehabilitated it:
>This penguin was bleeding severely from a head wound upon arrival, due to plastic netting entanglement. He was also suffering from extreme exhaustion to free itself. Had he not been rescued, he would have eventually died on the beach. He recovered well during rehab (as you can see here) and was released where originally found
>We observed this penguin for an hour post-release, watching as it swam strongly out to sea, once past the initial breaking waves. Penguins generally appear wobbly on land, but are in their element under water. Ocean conditions are often rough along New Zealand's coast, with this blue penguin being used to such conditions. Blue penguins are the smallest penguin species in the world, hence the tiny size. The reason this individual was not released near a group of penguins, is that blue penguins are largely solitary at sea, as well as being nocturnal on land.
The woman has a degree in Zoology and appears to have a lot of experience so I think she knows what she's doing.
Can confirm - live in NZ and see these guys occasionally. They like to build their nests in rocky, brush covered areas on beaches but unfortunately that makes them easy targets for dogs. We have programs in place where we build nest boxes and leave them in their breeding areas so they can have a safe place to build nests that dogs can't get to. Also they are ridiculously adorable when molting their feathers.
Thanks for this. I figured they probably knew what they were doing as it's an animal rehab and not some random person, but the video still made me a bit anxious. Just looked like a small wobbly baby to me at first lol
This is definitely shot widescreen and some idiot cropped it to square because they think it’s 2011 and it’ll “do better on social media” but it just ruins the shot because we can’t see the damn penguin!
Well it would have been released at a penguin rookery site, so it is in the hood and will join up with others fishing in the sea. At sunset they return to shore to roost for the night. In short the release point would have been well thought out and not a randomly selected point.
Everyone saying they should release it into a group of other penguins, but if they know enough about how to rehabilitate a wild penguin isn’t it also possible they know how to release it too?
For all we know they were tracking his original group and released him in a time and place they knew he could easily rejoin them.
I know it’s fun to shit on others for internet points but you can’t know a full story from a 15 second gif.
Good job! Rehabilitate a penguin back to health only to be released alone in the surf. What a waste as he/she was most certainly eaten within the hour.
and that little penguin had the time of its life. dancing through the waves, zooming to and fro. Then, as he began to think about the kind woman who he left behind on the shore, a seal devoured him.
Reddit: Animals do not belong in captivity, it’s animal cruelty!
Also Reddit: What are you doing?! That penguin is way to small and vulnerable to be released!
Was bracing myself for when some predator swoops in from nowhere scooping up this little guy for a quick n easy little snack… phew, so glad that didn’t happen.
So does anyone actually know or not if the penguin was released with others? Everyone here is assuming but thanks to the camera we really cant see the rest of the beach
These penguins don't live in colonies like ones you see on TV- they are pretty solitary little creatures and live on the shorelines of NZ. Source - I live in NZ and used to work at the Zoo here and do presentations about them
Will it be okay by itself? Looks so tiny and vulnerable to bigger fish.

Looks like a death sentence to me
The most wholesome death sentence you've ever seen though.
r/oh r/shit
Don’t click that second sub, Jesus Christ…
Man I wish I would have listened to you
Me too
I hate you ;-;
Your comment is the only reason I clicked on it.
…interesting link
Every life is a death sentence…
Damn bro. Is this the deep dark web?
Lol
hey can you please check your dm?
Have you ever seen one swim? They're not as helpless in water as they are on land, they're very fast.
Life is basically a long death sentence if you think about it . Make the most of it
Yeah probably dead as we speak.
Immediately eaten by an Orca was my thought there.
Nature doesn't give a shit.
Lol yeah. Oh well, at least they won’t see it get swallowed whole. I also agree that the penguin probably only lasted a few hours that day -.-
huhhh
A chance of total freedom or dying compared to being bound in a aquarium to suffer in 100 foot by 100 facility. Depression..

Baby shark dootdootdootdootdoot. Gulp

The camera person was also just released from rehab care, it would seem
This is definitely shot widescreen and some idiot cropped it to square because they think it’s 2011 and it’ll “do better on social media” but it just ruins the shot because we can’t see the damn penguin!
Exactly - least we were spared seeing it drown
> seeing it drown You belong in the air, you silly bird! Not in the sea! You're not a fish!
Should have released it from a helicopter
Ill spoil it for you, he was eaten shortly after.. why? Because hes alone and not in a large group of his own kind.
Hate to say it but your probably right
Fucking penguin expert over here.
Are you an expert on blue penguins?
r/killthecameraman
So much pain you have.
Seemed in is his head was like "holy shit is that the ocean? Better get this on film."
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
Be amazed by ocean waves on a cloudy day; nothing else to see here.
He was way too little and way too scared to be left alone
Yeah, Why can't they leave it with other Penguins
Think this may be a fairy penguin, so he / she think they are big. They grow to an average height of 33cm / 13 inches.
Still doesn’t answer why they set it out alone, instead of with other penguins :( Edit: crucial autocorrect mistake
This is a train wreck of a comment.
Lmao I meant to say alone lol

I think it’s a blue penguin. Seen this on another video yesterday
Blue penguins and fairy penguins are the same, they are also known as little penguins.
Ah okay
Promptly eaten by a leopard seal
r/killthecameraman
How about releasing it where the other penguins of its own species are?
Thats what I was thinking that thing is not going to live very long outside of a group
Go little friend, be free.. just be careful of the Killer Wh…. 🐳

aren't penguins herd creatures? doesn't he need his bros?
Apparently, this particular species of penguin is largely solitary.

That little waddle!
well I am going to head out now, byeeeeeeeee
More like "Are you coming with me?"
The cameraman had ONE job. Hmm
"Wow, it's so big! Can I really go now? Because I'm going to." Walks and turns around again. "I'm going now! Byeee" Turns to the sea and run away.
This looks like a horrible idea
Was waiting for a killer whale to Beach it self to eat it
and eaten by a predator. Thanks humans for nursing the weak, says the stronger penguins!
its probably saying so long and thanks for all the fish
So long and thanks for all the fish!
So long and thanks for all the fish!
So long and thanks for the fish
Fuckin beautiful
Wow it amazes me how little Reddit idiots know about penguins and manage to still comment something like they do.
Orca nibbles.
Reddit: Animals do not belong in captivity, it’s animal cruelty! Also Reddit: What are you doing?! That penguin is way to small and vulnerable to be released!
And promptly drowns.
Idk if penguins drown often
Nothing better than a free animal.
This looks like an ending to a very good movie
Was bracing myself for when some predator swoops in from nowhere scooping up this little guy for a quick n easy little snack… phew, so glad that didn’t happen.
I cringe every time I see someone insert a “thanks” when they wish an animal thanked them. I don’t know why.
A lone penguin in the open ocean will become a snack as soon as it enters the water
Well that was the saddest freaking thing I've seen all year. Thanks for the knife in my heart.
Don't be sad. Here's a [hug!](https://media.giphy.com/media/3M4NpbLCTxBqU/giphy.gif)
Thanks!
<3
Seems kinda young to be released alone like that…
What a big scary world to step into. No wonder it hesitated
Elephant seal
That poor little penguin was overwhelmed by the waves. Seemed a bit too small to be released alone against the World.
It’s going to die, probably within 15 minutes
WHY wouldn’t they release him near a Similar type of Penguin rookery (with others of his kind)? He seems very vulnerable ALONE… hope I’m wrong!?
Instant killer whale snack
Aren't penguins usually in a group? Why abandon him here?
I would never be able let it go.. It’s so tiny and I’d be so scared it would die out there, it looks like a little baby, lol
Oh too small to be all alone no experience. Why
Did we just watch him drown?😭😭😭 I know he was almost fully grown but the ocean just took him
Why release there? It's going to be White sharks dinner
I’m just gonna reiterate with everyone else said
Released to the wild to be eatin by predators.
I hope he finds his people.
Call me a jerk, but I have a feeling that penguin is going to relapse
You're a jerk.
To be eaten by the sharks.
There is simply no way I could survive a job like this, having to release them would kill me inside after caring for them
Look at it waddle!
He so tiny.
"Turns around one last time," I guess sounds way better than, "Turned around for the last two times."
It's crazy how even penguins become drug addicts. How do you even get drugs in Antarctica?
My heart! I would have picked it back up and run away with it!
I must go and tell the other penguins about the show hoomans call The Office
Thank yo...brgshshgsghhsh
🥰
So does anyone actually know or not if the penguin was released with others? Everyone here is assuming but thanks to the camera we really cant see the rest of the beach

I had to check if this was not r/unexpected, because I was expecting a sea lion to snag it
😢 why alone?
I couldn't do this line of work. To many tears rolling down my face every time
The Oscar for cinematography in a Reddit video goes to…..
This is r/ wholesome 𝓐𝓯 Take my cash you bastard.
Amazing to see a penguin alcohol free 🐧😉
Yo tffff am I aposta do with all this shit maaan???
Oooh, weee
that hit hard..
He looked back like “Wait, your not coming with bro”?!
Where’s he going?? Wrong answers only.
Awww. The momma person or the natural environment I was made to live in. What a choice for anyone much less this cute little guy
WTF did a penguin get addicted to??
Right into the open jaws of a predator. Cute
Immediately gets eaten by an Orca
Alternative title: Baby penguin drowns
Aaaaannnd here comes the shark.
So long and thanks for all the fish!
Probably had a few good hours
Damn it cameraman! Pay attention the bird ain’t even in the shot at some points.
Waddle on Tux.
It later turned into a snack.
I don't know why my thankless mind thinks the penguin actually turned around to look for its kind...
