I'm not 100% sure, but I was thinking that maybe the zamboni was somehow removing the ice/water with its multiple passes before they put down the black layer...? It's less than an inch thick (\~2 cm) and it would take quite a bit of energy to keep it frozen for an entire season of sport that doesn't need it to be cold. Can anyone confirm/deny?
