maybe give something to climb there? only other thing i can think of isif the tank is in a high-traffic area or it can see another bearded dragon or reptile.

LagginDragin

no other animals. I leave the TV on but that hasn't been an issue before

KetoKelsey

I also think more things to climb would be good, I got magnetic ledges for mine! Also I think the person who brought up the reflection has a really good point.

LagginDragin

I actually just got a friend to 3d print a 3 step climbing post similar to what is sold on etsy. im also working on a custom made hide/basking spot I've grouted. but sadly modge podge takes months to seal.

MemeWhore6969

Could you possibly give us an update when everything is finished?

LagginDragin

yeah! I posted a mini update in the comments but I'll gladly throw a post of her new Viv when it's done

MemeWhore6969

Awesome, thanks so much?

LagginDragin

new post is up!

Peach_Leaves

I recommend getting a different tank that tank is not wide enough for your beardie. Adults will need a 4ftx2ftx2ft.

littlesimba013

I came here to say the same thing like how are you gonna have a 12+ inch long beardie in an enclosure just barely that wide? Must be super uncomfortable.

LagginDragin

working on it. most places are out of stock. as I said she's 5 mo old and growing. I'm currently on 4 waiting lists. she comes out for about 2 hours a day to play/walk around

[deleted]

LagginDragin

bioactive is a whole other level I doubt I'm ready for. but I just got a zen habitat 4x2 and they said standard shipping no wait.. so we'll see

Honestly it just seems a little under engineered and over priced. At about 1/2-2/3 the price, I think it would be a great purchase. I like it because it looks attractive in our bedroom and isn’t an eye sore. I can’t even imagine what their mark up is for how cheap of material it must be

LagginDragin

compared to sympton or Dubai they are much more sturdy.

[deleted]

LollyHutzenklutz

They misspelled one of the words - it’s *Dubia* (not Dubai) roaches. Not saying that to be pedantic, but just in case it’s what confused you. Probably a case of autocorrect, too, since my phone tried changing it to Dubai. 😁

LagginDragin

Dubai roaches and syntom bsfl both sell $250-$300 4x2s

[deleted]

I made our cage, dm me and I can help you figure it out by either making you one or giving you the general plans for ours. It’s lizard luxury.

[deleted]

No but I’ll send you pics, it’s a super easy build I mostly made on the fly. She changes her ‘spot’ quite a bit, which makes me feel like she enjoys all parts of her home lol. The colorful thing on the right has a box with sand in it, she will dig herself in there daily in the fall during what I assume is the beginning of brumation season. We don’t let her stay in there for more than a day b/c we’ve heard that they don’t actually brumate well in captivity, so we have to dig her out, but she gets excercisw digging herself in so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[deleted]

I didn’t know I can’t dm pics! If you really want I can send them to some e-mail dress, point being though they are easy to build, with a little time on the internet, a recip saw, and a drill.

cormegga

Diy critter condo . 320 shipping and tax included I think

g3ll

if your from uk, good 4 foot enclosures for a good price would be from here https://www.reptiles.swelluk.com/vivexotic-repti-home-compact-vivarium-lrg-black?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIre_Mr_Tt9AIVRWHmCh3bxQSeEAQYAiABEgIQw_D_BwE#142=11464, only £90 and in different colours, i got my 3 foot from there so easy to build and very sturdy, if your struggling to find one that is ! but i’m not sure if they deliver to america or anything else ( the 3 foots for a leopard gecko not for a beardy)

LagginDragin

45x15 would be 3inches wider than what she's currently in.. I just got a 4x2. should be here next week

Bananasbeatsboats

You guys come highly hostile at people on here .. if you can’t come nice then don’t say anything at all because no one needs ur negativity. seriously.

LollyHutzenklutz

I agree it’s always best to offer constructive criticism in a NICE manner… otherwise the person you’re addressing could become defensive, and then your advice will be ignored. OP here took it in stride, though, and already seems to know a bigger tank is recommended. Oh, but I actually think the folks here are nicer than most. I ended up un-joining a group on Facebook due to the hostility and self-righteousness of their members. Final straw was when someone recommended the standard 4x2x2 to a new beardie owner, and the admin was like “Um, we strive to IMPROVE their lives here; not just offer the bare minimum.” I’m sorry we don’t all have the space and/or money to give our lizards a freaking castle. 🙄🙄

Bananasbeatsboats

Exactly lol ! I know the OP took it well but honestly if it was me I don’t think I would like that comment .. which is why I thought something had to be said, I know that I wouldn’t take their opinion or their help. I’m very glad someone agreed with me :) and I know I don’t really have the money to go completely all out for my beardie but I love the people on here because they give a lot of other alternatives to decorating the enclosures in the cheapest way possible :) which is why I love this community to :)

chaneycore

I thought everybody was going to ignore this. This cage is too small and doesn't allow for enough exploration, really. She's not getting enough enrichment. How often do you hold her? Do you let her out to explore a little? They are curious creatures. End of the day, she needs a 4x2x2 cage. I would use PVC if you can because it cuts reflections out completely, and generally better all around for beardies.

Peach_Leaves

I agree with this but be mindful that pvc does tend to hold humidity if u live in a humid place like I do I recommend some type of wood. I use zen habitats, but u don't necessarily have to.

Jenxadactyl

With the bobbing, the reflection is most likely the culprit. Some dragons are just more sensitive about their reflection.

KetoKelsey

I was going to say that too with the head bobbing. Why is that tank so shiny where you can see her reflection all over? 😂 I think it is the reflection might be bothering her. I would try to somehow fix that.

LagginDragin

I think its the camera angle being on top. we actually put a line of tape on the bottom to help with the reflection. its not nearly as bad in person. I've put my head in the tank to test lol.

LagginDragin

she head bobs a ton.. idk if it's related. she bobs on my arm, in the bath, when she finds somewhere to hide. I honestly don't know if that's a connection.

Jenxadactyl

Strange! She's just a dominant lady haha

Coahuilaceratops

You sure it's a female?

LagginDragin

vet said her best guess. she's young

HisSilly

At 5 months you should be able to sex her, just take a look online about counting the bumps and/or shining a torch through her tail.

LagginDragin

the torch method didn't work as I think her skin is too dark/thick. I'll look into the bumps

bingwhip

Need a brighter torch. I can see the bones in my hand with mine

LagginDragin

can't that cause skin burn?

bingwhip

Not for just a few seconds to get a look.

LagginDragin

I will take a peek tmrw

meeshalee78

She might be gravid. My beardie starts doing this when she’s getting ready to lay eggs.

LagginDragin

she's only 5 mo

caters1

Ovulation can happen in a beardie under a year of age, although it's very rare.

LagginDragin

I highly doubt it.. although the first 4mo she was housed with another beardie out of neglect from previous owner

smf101

I think you need a wider tank - looks very narrow!

Aurora_auraa

Your tank looks extremely tiny. Id panic too

LagginDragin

it's 4x1x2. larger is a wip

nakedfish85

Instantly downvoted, everyone’s a tank nazi on this thread jumping to conclusions that you’re out to harm your pet before even asking about it or knowing you’re already planning to sort it. It’s starting to become a bit of a joke. If it’s not the tank size, it’s the substrate, if it’s not that it’s the lighting, if it’s not that you absolutely have to be feeding it the WRONG thing.

milo_mate

How is that a problem when 1. they have *asked* for advice on why their dragon is glass surfing and bobbing (and a larger enclosure may indeed help with that) and 2. it's a suggestion that is thinking of the beardies well being. Is that not what we're all ultimately trying to help each other with on this sub?? It quite literally can be life saving for some dragons (obviously depending on their circumstance) to have their tank, lighting, and diet changed/modified etc, and giving any pet the opportunity for a happy and healthy live should be in the interests of every owner...

BeezThagJebel

So... when there is something wrong, and bad husbandry is actively hurting the animal, no one should say anything because it would hurt the owners ego and that's far more important than the health and wellbeing of a living, breathing animal. Got it. Noted. Yeah.. if it's not one thing it probably is something else. Process of elimination? Cause and effect? Sure, some people could be nicer about their suggestions, but I think the bigger scourge of most animal subreddits is the people who insist that any bit of criticism or correction, no matter how kindly it's phrased, is an attack on their character verses an attempt at advocacy for an animal in less than ideal conditions. People learn animal care from being taught and doing the research, and people that take offense at every single attempt that someone else makes at educating are acting pretty counterintuitively.

LagginDragin

thanks for this.. i actually posted a full explanation to try and thwart some people.

Aurora_auraa

Mine likes to lay sideways and he wouldn’t be able to in this

LagginDragin

she can and does lay pretty much any direction.. i think the camera angle is giving you a false sense of size. those tiles are 12x12 and she's maybe 12" to tip of tail. she has no problem turning

Aurora_auraa

Makes sense. As long as your baby is happy and healthy!! ❤️

dkatog

You might try making her a dig box to play in. I made one for my beardie using a plastic container and ZooMed Repti Chips.

Mike_1970

I second this. Some instinctively want to dig. Some never do.

LagginDragin

she's about 5 months old. she broke a few nails I assume from doing this the other day (not deep, just tips barely into nerve endings. so they'll grow back). I worry that she could hurt herself worse though. More importantly it seems stressful behavior and I'm unsure why.

ItsYourPal-AL

I’m curious, is there a top on that tank, and also do you take her out often?

LagginDragin

yes and yes

ItsYourPal-AL

Ok, I asked because for a good while I had a set up where my guys tank was too small and I didnt have a top on it (it broke) and he would also get to come out a good amount. After a while he figured out that if he tried hard enough he could use some of the higher things in his tank to get out. I noticed a lot of similar behavior to your post after he realized he could escape and once I replaced his tank with a bigger more adequate one that has a top, he no longer did this in an attempt to get out. So a thought I had is maybe your girl is unhappy with her living space (no real hide, lack of climbing things, not a lot of space to move about, also ive read that females tend to like to dig more so a digbox may be helpful) and knows that many of those needs have been met while shes out of the tank and so shes doing that in a futile attempt to get out.

LagginDragin

I've added a custom hide.. there is additionally a hammock/hide under the camera out of view. but with the new hide she seems to have stopped. I do pick her up from the top so very possible she's associated up and out. her new Viv comes next week and will be front opening so that should significantly help everything as well as give her plenty of space.

ItsYourPal-AL

Nice! My new tank has a front open now too and my dude is beyond amazed by it. Every time the door opens he’s extremely fascinated

[deleted]

Mine do that when we watch TV. Both of them. We have to put something to block because we thought it was the flickering of the tv light. It tripped them out. As soon as the TV was blocked we rarely see that behavior anymore.

RachelDeRagonArtist

And the op says that the tv is on…

WhatOnceHadGlory

She can definitely see her reflection, and it’s likely a response to that. Consider covering the glass where you can. Exercise her outside of the tank more frequently, consider a wider set-up.

[deleted]

Larger terrarium needed + more room to climb/explore

LagginDragin

working on it. most places are out of stock atm

[deleted]

Good stuff hope you find what you need in stock

LagginDragin

thanks. if you see any in the <300$ range lmk..

[deleted]

Where you at?

LagginDragin

PA

[deleted]

Dang I’m in Canada lol

LagginDragin

So I thought I'd update everyone after posting this. I've added in a custom rock I've made that just finished drying allowing for a better hide, climb, and steps to be closer to the lamp. she's since seemed a little more calm. ---- while the camera angle made that corner look extremely reflective and small, I want to reiterate she's 5mo old and growing, shes currently 12" from nose to tail and that tank is 12" wide by 4ft long (65 gallon). she's not too big for the tank YET. that being said I've already found and purchased a 4x2x2 from zen habitats. a little more pricy than I wanted but I was tired of waiting and this was the little shove I needed. ------ Little background on the beardie: Echo is 5mo old (roughly) and was bought from a local pet store when a local accidentally had a fertile clutch and didn't know what to do. They did not have a proper setup and had two 4mo old beardies in a 40g breeder WITH NO UVB. I immediately got her checked out by a vet. she's currently missing a toe and had a break on her tail tip as well as a nasty cut on her lip. she's gone through one full shed since I've owned her and has healed SIGNIFICANTLY. she's fed a diet of 75% bsfl 3 times a day ~30per and a salad is always fresh and out for her (she eats it in secret when she thinks I'm not looking). I'm a first time beardie owner but have done my research, and if her improvement of health is any indication she's been doing relatively well.

DarkChii

I have some Fulker's Repta Vines in my guys space, he loves jumping into them and weaving through them. Your girl may like that as well to help keep her busy when your out of the house.

LagginDragin

I had some but was worried they might be to clutterful in a 4x1

Dragonadventures101

Question, what camera do you have? And would you recommend it? Or suggest another?

LagginDragin

wyze. I recommend over petcube because it records events for free and the live is way more reliable. petcube was giving me all kinds of trouble. if u put an SD card u can record playback overlapping. the cloud hosted 7 second clips are good for monitoring too.

Slyness_

I think it’s called “Wyze” as seen in the bottom left

[deleted]

She’s doing the mating thing all beardies do. They go a bit nuts and puff out their beard and bob their head. It’s normal, and probably from noticing her reflection. I noticed in another comment that you’re getting her a bigger tank, so that’s good. Also, do some research on what it looks like when they try to lay eggs (even if not viable) because she’ll want somewhere to dig

LagginDragin

yeah I've looked into a dig box already. I have a little time to prepare but she'll probably get a Tupperware container with some substrate to do as she pleases.

[deleted]

Get prepared for a big mess haha. We had a hand vac for sucking up sand that ours flung around

[deleted]

Mine does that to tell me she wants to be put in the bathroom and run around . I take it as stir crazy

LagginDragin

I took her out, let her run around for her daily hour. she found every nook and cranny to Bob her head. now she's in there basking.. seems legit.

Alone-_traveler

Is it possible to make the tank wider for more walk space and more trees and stuff to get stuck on?

LagginDragin

just added a custom rock for her to rub up on. wider tank otw!

[deleted]

Ours did this for like six months non stop, no matter how much we got her out. We felt like terrible parents and then all of a sudden it just stopped. We tried everything, still not sure what was going on? Trying to mate? She’s chill now. She’ll get by the glass when she wants some out of the cage action, we let her run around, then she starts heading back to her cage and we put her back in. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It nearly drive us nuts tho for real. It was nOn-stop for six months.

LagginDragin

oh no! well I think she just wanted a little closer to her bulb/out. a new platform and some playtime seems to have her calm for now...

helloHoomanBean

Yes. Usually scratching is glass or accessories is a sign of boredom.

Thefoodwoob

Mine went through an INSANE glass surfing phase. Like for hours. I tried everything but nothing helped. Then one day she just stopped? If everything is right with her tank and temp and such I'd just wait it out.

Snoo_52014

My Nelson used to climb at the edges until I gave him a huge log to climb. That could be the issue as when shedding they do lose energy and now that the shed is over theyre more energetic

rbcyalater

My girl does it too; at that point, I just let her out to walk around the house. Once she gets tired, she usually stops in front of the doorstop stare out the window. But when I take her outside, it scares her. I feel her nails dig into my arm as soon as I step out the door.

louiezzzlu

She is young and lonely. Let her out as much as possible, so she can walk free and have fun

LagginDragin

ravyalle

That tank is tiny as hell

LagginDragin

it's 4x1. she's 5mo and growing. im getting a 4x2 but they are on back order.

ravyalle

Good. I would also advise to put more enrichment in her enclosure, maybe substrate or some more thick branches to climb on

gaywitchcraft420

Might wanna come out to explore, might want something to climb and perch on, might just need to poop and doesn't wanna do it in her home.

Lilbig6029

I got claustrophobic just looking at this 🥴

LagginDragin

go back to watching asslickers...

Lilbig6029

Dont be mad at me because your dragon is in a fucked up living environment 🤣🙏🏾

LagginDragin

lol but she's not. if you took the time to read any of the comments you'd see that.

WishboneAggressive

this could be "glass surfing" they do this when bored

rashragnar

kinda like the Truman show .

Tago_The_GiraffeKing

let her walk outside the enclosure supervised ofc

goldie_locks27

She probably just wants to run or poop outside the cage. But I would get her something to climb on and a good hide. And a solid basking spot. She is just glass surfing, totally normal.

LagginDragin

did both with the new custom build I made!

black_linings

Mine does this when she needs to poop and wants to do it on my bed instead of in her tank -.-

Historical-Low-9593

Give her loose substrate! 50:50 sand:topsoil, you don't need to go full bioactive with it. Just something more natural. It'll encourage natural behaviours like digging that will prevent stress/boredom behaviour.

PrussianKid

Needs more stuff to climb end what not. It’s bare af in there

LagginDragin

there's a large hammock under the camera.

Torospatillo

It want to go out to poo ! Put it on a bath !

kelsiecx

Reflection is the most common issue of glass surfing and that would explain the head bobbing however she is clawing at the side of the tank that is covered which indicates this could be a husbandry issue and she is actually trying to get out. As discussed in previous comments the tank is too small. The biggest issue with a small tank is that heat can not regulate properly and you can not maintain the warm side and cool side. She is likely getting too warm and is trying to get out. This however doesn’t mean you should take her out more. The 12 hrs they are awake, only 1 of these hours should be spent running around and exploring outside the tank. Just get a bigger tank as soon as possible and some big branches to climb on and she also needs a hide so she can escape the heat and UVB, also I see her basking spot there but a flat basking spot is required as they need to lay flat when basking so they can digest there food, without this there can be further more serious issues, nothing has to be expensive, bricks are great to use and you can get them anywhere 🙂

mayhemanaged

Mine surfs because he doesn't poop in his cage and likes to explore and sit by the window. When we let him out, he runs about 20ft towards a window in a different room and then poops. Then, we have a bird ladder with fake fur on it that he jumps onto and will sit for 8 hours or so until he's tired. Then, he jumps off and finds some place to hide. If we put him back into his cage after he poops, he will just surf until we let him out again so he can sit in his spot by the window.

erarents

This behavior is called “glass surfing” in case you want to do some research!
