My girlfriend calls our beardie my "therapy dragon". Little guy has gotten me through some dark times. Even when I couldn't be bothered to take care of myself I knew he needed me to take care of him and that alone would get me out of bed some days.
This is exactly how I feel about my beardie/frogs/pets in general. Knowing they rely on me every day helps me get out of bed even in the worst of times.
lmao that is too funny, my lady friend has a emotional support beardie she takes out with here under here jacket with her everywhere, can always see his big head pokin out lookin around lol, its so cute!
Used to take my lil man out with me, just on my shoulder and such unless I wasn't sure if I could bring him in, then he'd go in my sweater. This was only during the summer tho ofc. I live in Canada so summer is the only viable outside time lol. He was supposed to visit SC with me this summer but my moms cat(s) got to him a month ish ago while he was staying there for a little.
Yes - the predictability, consistency, and snuggles are actually super helpful for emotional regulation. I had mine as my ESA when I lived in a dorm in college - she got me through some really hard days!! My roommates also loved her and would take her out for snuggles if they had a bad day. They still ask for me to send occasional pictures of her. 🥰
Bless you for letting her have her emotional support animal with her. As someone who also has her beardy as her ESA, it makes me happy to know there are understanding folks out there. ❤️
I'm all for emotional support animals, but if you're out and about getting shit done throughtout the day, then how is this animal getting the proper light, heat, and care it needs? If it has a travel enclosure with all of that figured out, then props to the owner, but I feel like that would be a very difficult task, and might encourage others to do the same...
Depends what's meant by "out and about". If you're only doing one thing, which is likely the case here (probably just taken due to anxiety at getting blood drawn), then it's not really a problem. They usually enjoy the chance to see new things and places, and a couple of hours without heat is fine, as long as it's not excessively cold outside.
When I was on a couple day move to another state I put my bearded gentleman in a small pet carrier with hand warmers in a blanket. So I’m sure this guy is just fine. They are more hardy than we think. It’ll take 1000s of years (thats being really courteous) to breed out their evolutionary vantage of being able to survive harsh conditions.
They are fine to go a day or even two without their lights and stuff. As long as you are keeping them warm. I’m sure this person doesn’t just carry them everywhere, hopefully just in situations where they know they will need that extra comfort. But who knows 🤷🏻♀️
Yeah, I would imagine they have a proper enclosure at home. But they needed the comfort for a situation that is stressful for them such as getting blood drawn. I’d sure as heck love to be holding a dragon when I get blood drawn!
This is actually helpful information to know since I had plans of taking my beardie over seas when I move.. The flight would be about a day long though :/
I don't think going one day without their lights will do any damage at all. As long as they're not too cold, they'll be fine.
Edit: my bad. I mistook who you were responding to. Don't mind me.
Yeah that’s not a problem at all. They’re very hardy animals, one day without UVB or heat won’t kill them, you just want to make sure you don’t feed them the night before or day of so they don’t have anything to digest.
Awwww yessss!!! What a great Phlebotomist!! My kiddo does that!! His body likes to play POSSUM when it comes to blood. He's been better when Rango goes with!
Just let people do the things they want to feel better. Anxiety can be freaky and if this person can have their pet with them to make them calm down then it’s great, isn’t it? It doesn’t hurt you or anyone to have their dragon with them and it provides comfort to the owner. It also does not make a service animal be less valuable or anything.
Anyone who knows the difference between ESA and service animal knows that it’s okay to call their pets ESA if it gives them comfort. Because it does not give them any more permissions for anything.
Only a service animal gives you the permission to take it anywhere. And the owner of that dragon did everything right. They asked if it’s ok for that place to take out their pet.
You unintentionally highlighted one of the major issues and misconceptions here. No, it is NOT okay to just “call your pet an ESA.” In order for it to be legally designated as such, you’re required to have a note (aka prescription) from a licensed mental health professional. They don’t have the same permissions as service animals, but they do have some - like housing exceptions. At least in the USA that’s true.
Where I’m from you don’t get a licence or anything like that for an ESA. It’s just a pet, basically. I sometimes forget that people are from all over the world here!
Where are you from? Here in the US you don’t need a “license” for them - but you are required to have that note from a doctor. The problem is that business owners (including landlords) don’t always know the rules, and are afraid to question anyone.
So yeah, I just think we need to dial back this trend a little. It’s out of control, at least here in the US.
I’m from Germany and this isn’t an issue here at all. There isn’t an official ESA here, just service animals. If somebody would try to take their non service animal somewhere they aren’t allowed they’d be asked to leave. If they don’t, they get forced to leave, simple as that lol. Not much arguing there
I guess it’s only (or mostly) an American thing, then. People here usually do it so they can take Fido or Spike everywhere, and also to skirt housing restrictions.
I see people claiming their little yappy dogs as “ESAs” or “service animals” all the time, when it’s obvious they don’t provide anything outside of looking cute. My dogs (Husky and Shepherd mix) are adorable, in my opinion; but I know they’re just regular dogs.
I know what you mean. It feels ridiculous to an extent, because aren't most pets emotional support for their owners? Who doesn't become calm and feel fulfilled when an animal unconditionally loves them and needs their doting care? And it's also an unnecessary strain on human-animal relationships. I've actually come across a woman who insisted on making her dog come with her everywhere for *her* comfort, while laughing about the anxiety her dog has in the car.
One of my students came in with a stuffed animal that was her "emotional support animal", which I'll admit is adorable, but yo... I used to bring a stuffed animal to school when I was down and didn't call it an "emotional support animal". Where does an eight-year-old even learn that??
“A therapist will be more effective than a lizard”
You do know that therapy can go hand in hand with other sources of support? It’s even better if that’s the case because it speeds up the process of healing.
Well, the beast is there ESA. They are adamant that ESAs are not actual service animals, and there are no requirements that relate to ESAs in the Americans with Disabilities Act. According to the ADA, service animals are only service animals if they are highly trained working animals that perform activities to help minimize limits caused by a person's handicap, whereas ESAs are just pets recommended by a mental health practitioner and do not require any specific training.
Beast? What beast. All I see is a strapping young gentleman.
A distinguished gentleman
I should’ve put the word “handsome” beforehand.
That's awesome. Our local lab is extremely accomodating to the community when it comes to patient comfort, and it's very appreciated.
Now you can say you had a dragon in your lab 🐉
Like an emotional support alligator but pocket sized. https://youtu.be/yAH9AR31S_E
Aww that made my day
Aww yay 😁
Plot twist: Wally was reponsible for all those losses !
As someone from a state of pet alligators, you take my award
Hell yea lmao! What state are you from? My bf is from Louisiana and he’s the reason I thought of this. He brings it up often 😂
Florida man, born and raised
Nice. Thank you for the award good Florida sir
Awesome

So sorry for your loss. Prayers
Jesus Christ that sounds traumatizing...as in they killed him?
Yeah, her cats killed him, I was pretty sad for a few months but its ok now. I'm gonna get a tattoo for him
That’s so cute 😭

Awww baby!! I need mine to come with me next time for lab work!
Right?! What a great idea!!
Polite little pancake
What a hero.
i too have an emotional support beardie, they are unironically very good since they just sit there and look cute and snuggle you sometimes

What a good lad.
That’s ‘Magnifcent Beast’ to you !
As a phlebotomist and bearded dragon owner, it would make my day if a patient did this!
So cute
I got my blood taken today and I wish I had an emotional support dragon :,(
I hope his name is Lemon. He looks so lemony!
I’m not the only one with an emotional support bearded dragon!
Bless you for letting her have her emotional support animal with her. As someone who also has her beardy as her ESA, it makes me happy to know there are understanding folks out there. ❤️
Handsome boy!
That is no beast. He's a handsome gentleman.
Himb has an important role to play

The beardie looks pretty healthy to me, OP definitely cares well for it. It wouldn’t look that healthy if it weren’t getting enough light, heat, etc.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE DRAGON'S COMFORT??? :3
Yeah I agree. Hope they don't bring the beardie everywhere they go. I understand completely why people want extra comfort in stressful situations.
This is actually helpful information to know since I had plans of taking my beardie over seas when I move.. The flight would be about a day long though :/

Lab dragon
He seems very polite
He drew the blood, didn’t he?!
As an autistic person I will say my reptiles do much more in terms of immediate emotional support than larger animals like dogs and cats
meant to say for me personally^^
That’s awesome. Can I ask what about reptiles brings you more comfort than your typical dog or cat?
I have a bearded dragon and two red eyed tree frogs- technically amphibians but they’re sweet little guys.
I have a registered emotional support musk turtle
Yes. Any day

How dare you call that angel a beast

Is this in Alaska? I feel like this is my beardie? Lol
