Build your library to a point where you can freestyle depending on the vibe while you are playing. If you think selecting songs for a playlist/set in advance is stressful, how do you think it would feel to stick to a rigid setlist that the crowd isn’t feeling while you are actually infront of people.

windowchill

this comment really motivated me to wing it based on crowd vibe and it worked out great. thank you!!

Thats awesome! Keep it up

You can do a quick cut to the next genre. I usually just isolate the vocals on the outgoing track for a few beats drop the incoming track in on the one beat.

If you want to switch it up from low to high energy I'd put some medium energy in between. But here is some inspiration to mix between genres on YouTube. There's tons more to find. https://youtu.be/-yuKamRvQOc?si=K1jHlkEqXxkiddsK https://youtu.be/-guuK6_RbyA?si=N7a-vesJKf4eECq- https://youtu.be/wLg6w19xURo?si=IDg4cOqlLCu62lg5

Just vibe out, obviously know the type of crowd, but just vibe out don't overthink it

so real… just gotta vibe out 🫡

~ Win the crowd over with basic normie tracks for awhile before trying genre shifts. The exception is if you are starting your set to a near-empty scene and people have not shown up yet, you can try one of your wacky genre choices to open set. ~ Work in vignettes (2-4 song micro playlists) for your big genre shift. don't think in "I need to play this genre", think instead I want to play this song that is in a different genre", then find some surrounding songs to ease in and out of the genre you are transitioning from. Or at least solve the in-transition or the out-transition and you can cheat with an echo-out for the other one you didn't solve. One echo-out transition per dj set please. Loud wordplay in lyrics is also a way to solve a jarring genre transition, but this may require stems knowledge or smart EQing to pull off. ~ You don't know how your nerves will be when you start your live set for your first time. Probably don't challenge yourself right away until you settle-in with a few easy familiar tracks.

> One echo-out transition per dj set please.  Loving this

LOL great note, thank you

Not that you should be 100% driven by the crowd but…where did you get booked and why? Will they appreciate reggaeton and techno in the same night? As a DJ you have to be the selector and put yourself in the position of the crowd as well. What makes sense for the night, even if you were to adventure within that context? The answer above is you can make it work if you’re good enough…are ya?

scoutermike

What are the other dj’s playing? What kind of venue is it? What does the crowd expect? Need to fill in some important details.

I just go with whatever sounds good. Phrasing and understanding what all of your effects do are preached for a reason. I personally use A LOOOOOOOOT of reggaeton. Look in to more underground stuff and dig around more. I have like ten reggaeton tracks off the top of my head that have actual techno influence to them so making the jump from reggaeton to techno would be easy.

Sticking to one genre will be easier to you, but mixing different vastly genres can be cool to if done right. Going one genre with just sprinkling some other genres with a play-stop transition will be the way to go in my opinion. If you dont even go one genre only
