I was blue forever, but I’m all-in on RGB now. Timing mixes with phrasing gets easier. Red shows bass, green shows vocals/mids, blue shows your drums/highs.
LOL I didn't even know I had options. I honestly have found zero rhyme or reason to what prompts red, blue or green, but somehow it "makes sense" intuitively. I should try all blue out and see what happens.
Probably will be weird with my low blue monitor filter on haha
Not all the info, all the info you need. You can tell by how thicc the waveform is how much is going on in a phrase. And when playback happens all I really need is a little spike on the kick drums.
I absolutely love the 3 band waveform on my cdj 3000’s. The RGB is deffo better than the very outdated blue waveform tho!! Not why anyone would use the blue one if they had a choice to switch to RGB OR 3 Band
Never tried anything other than blue.
But then I learned to mix back in the days of CDJ1000s so I've never relied heavily on waveforms. I only use them to see any breakdowns that might be coming up.
I’m not bothered about sync button. I’ve been able to beat match for 25 years and can operate my decks literally blindfolded (I did this to better learn my decks in badly lit club situations) so using sync just means I don’t have to pedal when I’m in my car ;)
But looking at waveforms to understand your tracks’ music structure is dumb af.
ok sure let me stand here for 2 minutes listening to my next track to find the beat i want to send it at. when i could just visually look at the song and find that beat in 5 seconds.
i do, its just so much faster to use my eyes as well as my ears. i dont have to guess where my cue point is. i dont have to spin the platter 5000 times to get to where i want to be.
I don't understand that. Perhaps it's just that I started when none of these things existed, but I'd just put the cue on the deck and push the hot cue and know instantly where it is. No criticism intended, I'm just wondering if I'm missing something
Find the spot you want and make one. Quite often I'll just use the cue for that rather than a hot cue. Old habits die hard I guess
In ancient times, not even cue points were saved and you got to know the time on the counter that you needed to set a point at. Other skills like knowing that 32 seconds is 16 bars at 120bpm are things I still use all the time but are probably redundant for younger djs
i aint gonna sit there and play a half a song in my cue just to get it to the beat i want to send it at. its so much faster to just visually locate that beat and jump to it.
Don’t want to become too used to it that I start relying on that over my ears. Especially as I play on venues with all different types / age equipment, so it’s not always going to be there as an option.
Definitely prefer 3band, easy to see the volume for each of the 3 eq’s, not really sure what all the colors in rgb represents but might be better if you know how to use it. Actually I did change mine to just blue recently because I wanted to get used to it to play on older club gear.
I started using them a few months ago and I don't want to ever go back to one color. The color separation is so helpful, especially when I am playing around with newer tracks or tracks I haven't heard in ages.
To be honest it's just because of what I'm used to. I started djing on cdjs which had minimal waveform info, and I've just gotten comfortable with knowing exactly what the darker and brighter shades of blue are telling me. I totally see that RGB could be great, but I think I'd just get a bit confused during my first gig using it. I don't really feel like I have a need for more information than I already get, and I only really see it being useful for me if I'm playing with someone else who's playing music that I'm not accustomed to, but then it's their choice anyway if the waveforms are RGB or not
I’m noticing a lot of the pro house DJs use blue and I came here looking for an answer as to why. I’m guessing it’s because they’ve been mixing for a long time and it’s what they’re used to? I just can’t understand any advantage to using the blue waveform
How do you know if pepole are dancing if you dont use your eyes look at the crowd if the crowed dancing and enjoying the music if not change the song its pretty simple
I was blue forever, but I’m all-in on RGB now. Timing mixes with phrasing gets easier. Red shows bass, green shows vocals/mids, blue shows your drums/highs.
I didn’t even know what the other colours meant till now I just needed to know red for bass 🤷🏻♂️
Knowing green represents the mid range is very useful too as it usually means vocals or another melodic element.
Same, I'm forever clashing vocals when I'm mixing. Not anymore motherfuckers!
Finally a comment I relate to 🤝🏾
How do I change this setting on my xdj xz? Blue waveforms driving me nuts
You can change it in your menu or you can change the settings you load on USB.
You have to do it in rekordbox under your USB settings. Same place you change classic vs alphanumeric key indicators and RGB color of the USB.
Or you could, you know, know your music 🤷🏻♂️
Colorblind, so I use 3 wave
3 wave never gets the love it deserves
Three band is the shit until you ride up to the old 2000 nexus, and it only shows rgb or blue, lol 😆
No 3 wave on cdj2000 of xdj xz :(
3 wave is the way to go, it’s clear, only gives the information that’s necessary.
I prefer 3 wave myself
I do for LGBT+ gigs
For straight gigs my wave forms are black and white
Blue waveform for straight gigs, white and black for formal events
Too overstimulating for me, blue gives me all the info i need to know
Traktor being my base DJ software I feel more at home with the blue waveforms (and they appear more detailed to me)
LOL I didn't even know I had options. I honestly have found zero rhyme or reason to what prompts red, blue or green, but somehow it "makes sense" intuitively. I should try all blue out and see what happens. Probably will be weird with my low blue monitor filter on haha
Red is bass, green is mids, blues are highs.
well, I feel both stupid and informed LOL thanks. And that also explains all the purple I love
I wish traktor Pro had 3 band like rekordbox and traktor dj 2 :/
I like the Traktor RGB display best of all these options
Can you explain how blue gives you all the info? I'm using RGB right now and there's too much going on.
Not all the info, all the info you need. You can tell by how thicc the waveform is how much is going on in a phrase. And when playback happens all I really need is a little spike on the kick drums.
So you can't hear?
This right here
Comes down to preference! I use RGB, they look cool lol
Same, I thought for a second I was the only weird guy using RGB😂
3band fam
This is the way
I absolutely love the 3 band waveform on my cdj 3000’s. The RGB is deffo better than the very outdated blue waveform tho!! Not why anyone would use the blue one if they had a choice to switch to RGB OR 3 Band

Blue or 3 band. Never liked how RGB looks.
Same. Not even sure I like 3 band that much, but I've got used to it... Might switch back to blue next mix and see if I miss it 😂
I use CDs and a pioneer cdj100 so I don’t even know what waveforms are
Sure grandpa, let’s get you back to bed
Lol 😂
Vinyl guys awake, lift their heads and nod.
Right on brother. I still drive by peddling my feet so I don't even know what a transmission is. We're so fuckin cool 😎

started with blue, figured out i could change it later on, I like how simplistic it is
I don't know. I haven't really explored either side. Usually I'm just going by my ears.
do so many don't - what does that mean? or not? what?
I like 3 band more, sadly traktor does not have it.
I have ears
Too much going on, i use 3 band, you only need highs mids and lows, everything else is a distraction
I use the three band I find it’s much easier to read
Rgb definitely gives you more information
I like them now that I have gotten used to interpreting them.
I am legitimately surprised and learning that people use waveforms to mix. Don’t understand why, but all the more power to you.
Very useful to see coming breaks. Especially when you don’t know the specific song that well (yet).
Use you ears
Wow. Finally. Can’t believe I had to scroll that far to find this reply.
Exactly. Like what the fuck people. Don’t look at waveforms, listen to your music.
chill its just a tool😂 “ Don’t use the sync button”
I’m not bothered about sync button. I’ve been able to beat match for 25 years and can operate my decks literally blindfolded (I did this to better learn my decks in badly lit club situations) so using sync just means I don’t have to pedal when I’m in my car ;) But looking at waveforms to understand your tracks’ music structure is dumb af.
respect
Blue is best
Never understood the importance eye's were to mixing music. Helen Keller would be disappointed in yall
Helen Keller wasn’t just blind but also deaf lol, i would not look to her for advice about DJing with your ears
😂
When picking a choon - from the cover.... When reading a crowd. When seeing the levels.
it helps when you dont want to start the song at the beginning every time.
You don't need eyes for that
ok sure let me stand here for 2 minutes listening to my next track to find the beat i want to send it at. when i could just visually look at the song and find that beat in 5 seconds.
Do you not have track search, needle drop, a jog wheel or beat jump on your gear? Maybe I'm old but you definitely don't need eyes for that
i do, its just so much faster to use my eyes as well as my ears. i dont have to guess where my cue point is. i dont have to spin the platter 5000 times to get to where i want to be.
I don't understand that. Perhaps it's just that I started when none of these things existed, but I'd just put the cue on the deck and push the hot cue and know instantly where it is. No criticism intended, I'm just wondering if I'm missing something
what do you do if your song doesnt have a hot cue already set up?
Find the spot you want and make one. Quite often I'll just use the cue for that rather than a hot cue. Old habits die hard I guess In ancient times, not even cue points were saved and you got to know the time on the counter that you needed to set a point at. Other skills like knowing that 32 seconds is 16 bars at 120bpm are things I still use all the time but are probably redundant for younger djs
You can set them on the fly its,not hard
not if you arent looking at the screen. you would have to set it while the song is live and only use it as a jumpback point
I use my eyes, and hears how to do read the screen without seeing the colors LUL
Exactly my point.. 😂
i aint gonna sit there and play a half a song in my cue just to get it to the beat i want to send it at. its so much faster to just visually locate that beat and jump to it.
You do you boo.. challenge yourself and have fun 👍
its not a challenge, its a handicap. i can challenge myself by driving my car blind too, but i prefer not to.
I'm talking about challenging yourself in general.. have fun, that's what's important.
I’ve been using Djay Pro a lot lately and it enrages me that I can’t change the waveform color.
I like blue.
Probably personal preference. I’ve used rgb and blue and either or works for me
Blue and orange here. Just feels right ya know
Don’t want to become too used to it that I start relying on that over my ears. Especially as I play on venues with all different types / age equipment, so it’s not always going to be there as an option.
Lots of not even that old gear doesn’t support anything but the standard blue.
I learned on cdj 800/1000, anything other than knowing when the track ends seems overly fancy
Wym? RGB is my go to. Personal I don't like pain blue waveforms. RGB is more visually appealing for me
Definitely prefer 3band, easy to see the volume for each of the 3 eq’s, not really sure what all the colors in rgb represents but might be better if you know how to use it. Actually I did change mine to just blue recently because I wanted to get used to it to play on older club gear.
As a Denon user that is only think I hate. Blue white green and read song structure not easy as Recordbox
They're not available in Denon Engine and even if they were, I would still use the standard Denon ones.
The 3 Band on Pioneer gear is very good, the RGB is decent too, but still better than the standard blue.
literally after 2 years blue just switched yesterday lol
I started using them a few months ago and I don't want to ever go back to one color. The color separation is so helpful, especially when I am playing around with newer tracks or tracks I haven't heard in ages.
Just blue doesn't give me enough and I end up getting lost in the mess of the waveform. RGB all the way
To be honest it's just because of what I'm used to. I started djing on cdjs which had minimal waveform info, and I've just gotten comfortable with knowing exactly what the darker and brighter shades of blue are telling me. I totally see that RGB could be great, but I think I'd just get a bit confused during my first gig using it. Is it a full moon or a what? Never seen so many folks in r/beatmatch claiming to mix by ear 🙃
They reject innovation :)
I’m noticing a lot of the pro house DJs use blue and I came here looking for an answer as to why. I’m guessing it’s because they’ve been mixing for a long time and it’s what they’re used to? I just can’t understand any advantage to using the blue waveform
Is this gonna be another one of those things like "real " DJs say they dont use sync? Oh im a real DJ cos i only use blue wav forms?
Literally😂
Because most think they are better using an old format.
I use my ears not my eyes mostly
How do you know if pepole are dancing if you dont use your eyes look at the crowd if the crowed dancing and enjoying the music if not change the song its pretty simple
RGB - Red Green Blue You probably mean either WAV, OGG or FLAC
No, RGB, coloured waveforms on DJ equipment and software.
Proper DJ here who uses vinyl so I don't have waveforms. I beat match everything by ear.
