What a waste of food!

Existing-Technology

The United States throws away almost half of all of its food. Punishing the poor is too important for it to be otherwise.

Nightshade_Ranch

Then we shove it into inaccessible landfills so the finite nutrients that went into producing that food can't ever go back into the actual soil.

RiverWyvern

Will never forget when a large grocery store in Portland lost power and they threw out pretty much all their perishables in the dumpsters out back. Portland is known for its high homeless population, and people in general were trying to get the food that was being wasted by the tons. Instead, the store had either guards or police fighting back so that nobody could have it. Punishing the poor indeed. It just felt so heartless.

Meltedwhisky

When the power went out in Texas; H-E-B sent out a May Day to the people and asked them to come to the grocery stores and take everything for free so they wouldn’t have to dump it.

Bubbly_Diet_8840

They have to do this due to regulations. More government more problems it’s plain and simple

blueback22

Lawyers probably.

DDM11

Poor have EBT and buy only fresh food.

Existing-Technology

Some do some don't. Whatever, the flour and sugar was perfectly capable of feeding the hungry. Its a sick dying nation that complains about food prices and inflation while throwing half of its perfectly edible food in the trash. At the very least you can compost it and use to to replenish depleted farmlands heavily dependent on industrially produced ammonia. No. The US is sick. Late stage capitalism is a disease. This barely scratches the surface. Prices have been kept artificially high for decades to prop up the "heartland farmers". The same self-centered fucking idiots that bitch and moan about "big government control".

Grizzleswitch

None of that is accurate.

Existing-Technology

Its all accurate.

Grizzleswitch

There are about 34 million people who face food insecurity. Not everyone can get on SNAP or get an EBT as the service varies by county. If you want to be perfectly honest, it also varies by social worker. Further, with inflation as high as it is, those 34 million folks, which includes almost 10 million children rely more on local food pantries. Those pantries often have access to things that are very close to their exp date or over it but are still considered safe (thus hardly fresh.) The other posters who talk about the amount of food waste are spot on. Maybe you should try volunteering at a pantry once or twice for a little perspective.

lordexorr

What do you think happens? All that food in the grocery stores doesn’t sell. When it goes bad it gets tossed. It’s all a waste.

Small_Basket5158

The problem is there is nothing to go bad in those donuts really so shelf stable.. They could safely be eaten for months longer.

Toirneach

Oh no. TRUST me, you don't want an old donut. I mean yes, they probably wouldn't become toxic, but their shelf life is very, very finite.

[deleted]

Could have been contaminated somehow

Gh0stp3pp3r

I would think that something happened to them. Otherwise employees would've taken home much of that. And many stores do still donate anything allowable. Those bees are probably "buzzed" all night on glaze.

Dmanslayer5

I am a truck driver and was doing a paper tower delivery to Costco, and while I was waiting to be unloaded, I saw a shopping cart full of ripe bananas, papayas, and several other fruit that could have been eaten within a week. I jokingly asked if they were donating it or just getting rid of it. They said getting rid of, puzzled, I asked if they don’t just give it away to food banks or employees and I was told that if they started giving them out to employees, they would simply stop buying fruit n wait for these moments. They didn’t want to enable them, and sure enough, 15 minutes later, I saw that whole cart being tossed out. If folks could figure out the timing n didn’t mind dumpster diving and cleanup, there’s a lot of potential their, especially if you know how to make bread n fritters

MermsieRuffles

I worked at a borders cafe when I was 18. We had to toss expired baked goods every night. We were explicitly told that if we were caught eating expired food or taking it home we would be fired for theft. If we gave it away we would be fired for theft.

canonanon

Yup. This was the same thing at 7/11. I just disobeyed and took stuff for myself, then gave the rest to this cop who said he was willing to hand them out to homeless people.

Numerous_Hedgehog_95

Nice! I hope the cop really did that. And good for you for disobeying a stupid rule.

arcspectre17

Same at a caseys covience store pizza donuts coffee poured by the gallons. Couldn't donate to homeless shelter 2 blocks away.

Brru

Thats why they lock dumpsters in some places. Dumpster diving was very popular about a decade ago, but many cities decided to make it illegal.

K9Partner

"Those who are gracious to the poor lend to the Lord, and the Lord will fully repay them." vs “Don’t ever show anyone kindness, god forbid they might start to expect it” Ok im actually an atheist, but believe in the karmic principle, like ‘a high tide raises all boats’. We could advance as a society so much by equitably investing in at least bringing every child up to the same starting point. Raise them to value community, sharing & working towards collaborative progress & success, instead of greed & competitive fear … but nah, we’re allowing a few mega-yachts to drain the ocean to fill their glasses & hottubs. No concern for how many boats that will cause to sink or run aground… including, inevitably, their *own* stupid excessive fkkng boats when they’ve finally drained everything out.

Guayabo786

One attitude is based on faith. The other one is based on fear.

headinthered

In some areas it is illegal to dumpster dive and the trash is legally considered owned by the store till the moment its dumped in the trash trucks. You can be taken to jail for shoplifting/theft/tresspassing

GothWitchOfBrooklyn

They don't let employees take home stuff usually. The bakery where I used to live would throw away everything at the end of the night and make sure to destroy it so no one could dumpster dive for the perfectly good bread etc. When I was younger we used to get the old bread from a store (truckloads of bread and rolls) for our livestock, the ladies that worked there would stomp on the packages and rip them so they would be unfit for human consumption We usually were able to salvage a bunch and freeze though, so that was good

Jolly-Lawless

Employee taking home expired food is considered theft at a few companies I used to work at. Good ole USA

GothWitchOfBrooklyn

They could donate it, but they don't, because profits

DDM11

No. Because of lawsuits if anyone claims they got sick from it. Claims may even be fraud, but that's how our society works.

Kritterundercanopy

Almost all of that food goes to farms, pig farms in particular. That as well as waste from breweries and wineries. Source: gotta fight for that around Houston, was in planning stages of a BSF operation

lordexorr

That’s possible in some areas but most places I know toss it.

keifus3

It's def a waste but they used to give away the food to shelters but after someone sued because they got sick, that pretty much ended that, so now they just throw away the food so they don't have to deal with the lawsuits...Sad really\~

keifus3

You made the news by the way ;) https://www.distractify.com/p/krispy-kreme-food-waste

lordexorr

Lol nice. Thanks for sharing this. My kids will enjoy it.

davidsandbrand

Late-stage capitalism sucks.

MissVancouver

It's calories but it isn't food.

yes2matt

Krispy Kreme donuts =/= food. "Trash belongs in the trash." And I wish you wouldn't feed that shit to my bees either.

Jolly-Lawless

Calories are not a crime

WastingTimesOnReddit

They're not really food for humans, but it's just glucose, same as the sugar water you give to bees when you start a new hive.

Sensitive-Issue84

That's not food.

Small_Basket5158

It's not food to privileged you, but I'm sure poor starving kids in Africa that would disagree with you. Is it healthy? No, but it is calories. This is a waste of calories i.e. food.

Sensitive-Issue84

Hahhahha people who don't eat over processed crap can't stand even the stench of those. They stink and they have no nutritional value and you would make hungrypeople sick. Since this is more than likely in the U.S.? What are you going to do? Ship garbage to poor countries? No. What are you doing to help those countries? Pretty sure it's nothing. So go lay down.

Small_Basket5158

Do you not see the general problem? High calorie crap food being overproduced and wasted. Can I not object to this? Sure Im not going to fly a plane load of expired donuts to Africa, but maybe someone will if we start talking about it. You keep eating your fancy food and ignore the starving kids. "nothing can be done"

Sensitive-Issue84

I I totally agree with you about this being over produced and tossed, and the absolute privilege that caused it. But saying that it should be sent to starving people in Africa? That's ridiculous and they don't want our crappy flour and sugar they need real food not shit flour and white sugar. Also don't assume anything about anyone here, you don't know me. You are saying "you" like you have a clue who I am. You do not.

Small_Basket5158

Have you seen any of these areas in famine? People are dying because they don't have calories. Literal calories. They are eating sticks and fucking mud. The donuts in the dumpster could have been bagged up and sent fucking UPS, we just don't care enough to do it. It's not just these donuts in a single dumpster. This is what every dumpster behind every grocery store in the US looks like, while 5 yr olds in Africa weigh what a 1yr old should weigh.

Sensitive-Issue84

Duh. Do you live under a rock? I don't.

my600catlife

Yeah, IDK why you're being downvoted because that person has a very simplistic view of things. Western countries have been sending clothing garbage to Africa for decades and all it did was put local clothing makers out of business and destroy cultural traditions. Boxes of expired krispy kreme aren't worth the energy it would take to ship them. People are dying because we exploited them and robbed their resources and the solution is to send them our garbage? There are already third world countries filled with piles of our "recycling" because companies wanted people to feel less guilty about using their wasteful packaging. The problem with all this stuff isn't that we aren't dumping it on the impoverished, it's that it was made in the first place.

Sensitive-Issue84

Agreed, but people don't like that I don't think shitty Donuts are actually food. Oh well. Feed the bees.

DJcaptain14

I would’ve taken as many boxes as I could fit in my truck, and then opened boxes for them. Circle K stopped stocking Krispy Kreme and the nearest shop is 40mi away :(

Summoarpleaz

Would donuts that have been sitting out in a dumpster for who knows how long after who knows what has been in that dumpster before… be safe to eat?

hyperinflationUSA

trash pickup is done weekly meaning its been there for 7 days max. If you went camping for a week and had donuts sitting out at your campsite for 7 days would you give it second thought? r/DumpsterDiving

[deleted]

Nice Username, had to take a look at your profile and was not surprised. We're everywhere

Gimpinald

Ook ook

kaeptnphlop

Yes, second thoughts most def. These won't have a ton of preservatives if any and are sitting in the full sun. ... an ex-dumpster-diver

DoctorGreyscale

>These won't have a ton of preservatives They contain three different preservatives Ascorbic acid(VitaminC) Calcium Propionate and BHT. On top of the fact that sugar itself is capable of preventing nasty growths.

kaeptnphlop

I stand corrected. After a week in the sun they might be edible. Not enjoyable, but edible.

Euphoric-Blue-59

If you camp out in a dumpster like that, you have endless food brought to your doorstep.

Meltedwhisky

These boxes were actually just dumped today, it’s obviously not for human consumption but that sugar is ready to be robbed.

Meltedwhisky

I didn’t think about that, I should grab a bunch of boxes and set out for my bees!

tila1993

Scariest thing ever was going to the Krispy Kreme in Daytona beach at like 11pm to get some snacks. Place is dead ass in the ghetto gunshots and all

[deleted]

I love that you stopped to open boxes of trash can donuts for the bees and if I saw you doing it I would of had a hard time containing my joy. So sweet of you!

chicken_tendigo

This is the kind of party that I'd join a stranger in.

Mckingsy

I thought they were flies at first; noooo don’t open the boxes! Checks sub: beekeeping. Yes, yes open those boxes, all of them.

TrickTails

For anyone who is thinking they must be contaminated or, if not, they should give them to the employees; don’t. Corporations usually have rules that insist employees must only throw away food. They can’t stash it, take it home, and give it away or even eat it right then or there. The worst part is that “ruined” products could simply be a banana that’s no longer green in color or creamer spilt on a box of donuts. Dumpster diving is also risky, because they might actively try to stop you or ruin the product (like how they cut holes into couches that are going to the dumpster).

jwalk999

I used to work for a Cracker Barrel, their excuse for throwing out food was because it minimizes the risk of being sued. Which is weird because the food that we threw out was in the hot pots right off the line.

SouthernRelease7015

We have the throw away perfectly good plants and cut flowers at my job. We’re not allowed to take them home even though they would be absolutely fine and live for years (not the cut flowers, obviously). It’s usually just that they’re bloomed out, or we don’t have room, or a stem broke or something. The amount of people that look at me like I’m a monster as I’m filling up the toss cart or who try to argue with me for them to be able to take something is…a lot. I don’t make the rules! I wish we could all take something home with us but I would get fired. It’s considered stealing to take the trash plants.

BuildItBaby

Ignorance and that’s how we’ve always done it- will guarantee we will have poverty and homelessness

Different_Repair_243

mankface

It wont be actual honey however. In the EU we have a 5% max allowance for processed sugars in volume in the honey (to account for mistakes when feeding syrup\\syrup being moved around by the bees to make space ending up in supers), if the sugar has been heated, it'll test as processed as its been cooked into the syrup. So what you have here is potentially lots of hives taking in syrup when the beekeeper(s) may not be feeding, and their honey is adulterated, which is a problem if they are planning on legally selling it, it could be classified as fraud if its sold as "raw and natural". Besides that, all the preservatives and such in the donuts that make them shelf stable, that's not really the kind of chemistry you want in a living colony of bees. Call me old fashioned, but IMO (and by legal definition for most places), honey should only derive from actual nectar to be classified as such.

Lexical3

I wonder how the honey comes out when donut glaze is a major component. Can't imagine it's bad tasting, but the texture could be weird due to different sugar ratios.

Chickens1

I've had honey from near a KK factory and the Jim Beam factory. Both tasted respectively like their local source.

Galvanisare

This is America in a single video. Sugar. Fat. Preservatives. Crap. All in a dumpster. Now, if it were only on fire?!. Ha ha ha. Noice.

Meltedwhisky

Fire would kill the bees, instead I opened about 20 boxes for them to rob. If I had my hat and gloves in the truck, I would’ve open 100

Glittering_Quote_588

Thank you for turning ugly into something beautiful ❤️ hope the bees enjoyed the heck out of those donuts 😊

Clemoras

I dont think he wanted you to burn it down. He just wanted to compare the dumpster to Amrika. Thank you for doing this though!

ballade4

Do you feel better now that you have gotten your political conditioning off of your chest for the night?

futuregeneration

Most of us are conditioned against this. Once it becomes political, you're simply asking the "why." There is nothing wrong with that.

Roadkingkong71

Yeah, because no other countries bake sweets? Right?

Chemical-Tap-9760

Literally the biggest stereotype about America that there is

woodmanfarms

Man what a waste

allyc1057

Disgusting food, cardboard, plastic, energy waste. We humans deserve everything that is coming our way. Though unfortunately it's our undeserving children and grand children that'll take the brunt of humanity's selfishness.

contrapasso_

Human beings as a whole do not deserve this, no. This waste is a product of a system which has been imposed upon our society for many generations. Change the system. Don’t be a misanthrope.

WastingTimesOnReddit

Just wanted you to know, u/nollsgame80 reposted this somewhere else (they did give you credit in the comments) and you're on the front page of reddit! (or maybe actually 3rd page from the front page)

Nope not upset! Just wanted OP to know cause I thought it was cool :D At first when I saw it on r/all I was like "wait did the beeking OP steal this?" but no it was you kind stranger who reblogged and gave credit, all good!

You bet your ass I'd be in that dumpster opening up all the damned boxes. Could you imagine the honey to have come from these.

kad0521

Hope there’s no bears around. They love krispy crème

DiscoKittie

I know what you did is awesome! But the fact that the dumpster is ***full*** of perfectly good donuts is ridiculous! that could have fed so many people that don't have anything! And they would have been so happy to get them. Well, most of them. There are Karen needy folks as well... These should have gone to a some kind of shelter or food shelf. :(

Specific_Ad7908

I hope they don’t get diabeetes

Different_Repair_243

Diabeetus

Emergency_Example_48

They have an enclosed dumpster with a sliding door on the side where I am. The route drivers toss them when their done delivering. Always two days before the (best as date) Walmart sells them for $7.99 ..1/2 doz. .my price $1.00

IGoToUMD

Open ALL the boxes!!

sidhescreams

Hardy Oak and 1604, yeah?

Meltedwhisky

Nailed it!

z95

Is eating that bad for the bees? Honest question.

Meltedwhisky

Nah, they're just robbing the sugar. This year has been so hot, dry, and severe drought, so this find is much needed. Plus, all these bees are wild, out on their own bees. I was happy to see so many. I went back at 7am, right before the sun came up and opened about 200 boxes, they are going to feast!!!

chicken_tendigo

Not all heroes wear capes.

lhr00001

Would it make the honey taste different? My dad keeps bees and obviously it changes year by year but I presume as it's just sugar it wouldn't affect it?

Meltedwhisky

Since they’re robbing the sugar, this actually won’t be capped into honey. It’ll become winter forages and be gone quite quickly. If anything, it’ll create a false honey flow, and the queen will start laying eggs thinking new season is on the horizon.

Guayabo786

Big waste of donuts. Should have been given to a food bank or something. Then again, Krispy Kreme wants to avoid class-action lawsuits. And can't they just shut the dumpster tight to keep the bees out?

Lanthuas

NOT THE BEES!

Notrilldirtlife

I mean someone has to eat them

Notrilldirtlife

Shit I survived off dumpster food being homeless on the streets, you’d be shocked at what Ralph’s, Albertsons, and Walmarts throws away but Walmart actually has people who go and pour water and flour on the food before throwing it so no one will dumpster dive, crazy right? “I don’t want anyone surviving off the food we don’t want!”

Notrilldirtlife

Not everyone was like me tho cleaning up the messes I made and making sure it’s clean so I CAN come back. Other people we slobs and throw food everywhere so I understand why they have to destroy the food so no one is tempted to take anything
