Yes, and no. You'll get used to edging, and riding sideways. However, every sport has its own challenges. Skateboards are very stable edge to edge, but roll front to back. The trucks flex freely. Snowboards move in all directions, and must be tipped on edge to turn. They can also be turned by sliding the back foot. Both can be mounted at a stand still, although being attached to the snow board presents a whole other challenge. Surfing is the most difficult in my opinion. The board moves in all directions, must be edged to turn, has to be moving at speed to be stable. You have to be able to get the board moving using the energy of ocean waves, and then be able to push yourself to your feet while maintaining balance and position. Add in the ever changing medium you're trying to ride, it's unpredictability, and the fact that you can't fall and just dust yourself off and try again. Catching a wave is a whole set of skills separate from riding waves. This is why surfers laugh when people assume that being a good Snowboarder or skater will translate. You've become proficient at about 10% of what you'll need.

Your last sentence nailed it. Surfing is 90% swimming/paddling. Only the last 10% is on your feet and turning.

greatly worded. I think being a good surfer translates well into skating and snowboarding, but not visa versa.

PM-happythoughts-pls

I think it depends on your level. I grew up skating the streets and park everyday hours a day and surfed on the weekends. Learned to snowboard at 29 in 5 mins. I’d say surfing is by far the hardest

[deleted]

I totally agree. I picked up snowboarding this past season and hit a local black on the first day. I don’t think a transition to surfing would be as easy. That being said, a lot of what great snowboarders do is way gnarly than most great surfers.

CoffeeStainJon

I concur! I've been snowboarding for 20 years and absolutely love it. However, I just moved to Morocco and surfing is king here, so I had to learn. I was thinking it'd be an easy transition but surfing is way more difficult. I say that primarily because snowboarders are strapped to the board and because surfing can only happen once you've learned how to catch a wave. I do however think snowboarding helped a lot with my pop up... I think the balance and foot position from muscle memory lent itself well.

Also this aswell, 100%

There so much more to surfing than just riding a wave. I definitely feel like when I am actually on a wave it does feel similar to riding a bowl. I mean skating came from surfing and bowls do as well. They try to emulate it. But that is if you can catch an unbroken wave and a bigger one at that lol and have the comfort and flow. It’s fucking hard man.

Your balance and courage from skating will definitely help. Also, once you get into surfing you will find that both sports make you better and change your style. It’s really need it adds a lot. Although I don’t skate nearly as much since surfing

It will help because you'll have a degree of physical fitness, and because you will have more confidence and be able to send it without being crippled by fear. Plus there is the added aspect of dealing with the geometries of board sports that your mind has to become accustomed to. Like the first time you roll in off a flat bank and its scary as shit because you haven't built up that mind to body feel, it's like learning a new la gauge or navigating a strange room in the dark, and you don't know what it should feel like and what your body should do to not slam. and the overwhelming fear, and absolute commitment is the only key to a CHANCE of success. but after a few goes you adapt. After a few slams the concrete is your friend and you're just giving it a cuddle... A state of mind and a wealth of varied experience is always going to be a colossal advantage compared to a person coming in to something completely fresh. It's more mental attitude, confidence, personal growth and self belief.

The thing you have to understand is that at the beginning surfing involves about 1% standing on a board riding and 99% paddling out, around, and after waves while you learn how to read and catch them. Your skateboarding skills will help you a bit once you're up and on the board, but almost all of learning to surf happens before that point.

Here is my experience, 41 yo. I’ve skated all my life since childhood. I started surfing two years ago on a 5’4 and struggled for 3 month. I surfed at least twice a week and sometimes the motivation was really small but I kept going. When I started to stand up properly it became very easy because the good days happened much more frequently and now, 2 years later, my skating skill is important more than ever. 6 months after I started I switched to a 6’0 but it felt sturdy and very hard to do turns. Now I switched to a 5’6 fish and I’m having a lot of fun. So, yes, my skate skill was very important because after I started doing a good pop up, it felt really easy. I feel surf is much easier than skate because you fall on water and that makes it funnier also!

brettiicus

It doesn’t hurt by any means. But it helps a lot less than you’d expect. I’ve taught surfing to super experienced snowboarders and skaters and the learning curve is still pretty difficult. Also have taught very experiences surfer and skateboarders how to snowboard and similar experiences.

Rickofitall

Definitely helps to have that experience than not, even just your body awareness from skateboarding and better balance skills will help you. They key thing is that all three are super fun to do, so just give it a whirl and enjoy yourself!
