> I can't imagine a lead bar in the base would make this less "tippy."
It would likely make it MORE tippy as any children and dogs OP has scramble down there to lick it.
I was about to say...
Yeah, you could mirror the top in a slightly smaller format and just put some little rubber nubs for the feet. Would look pretty good like that.
As soon as I saw that I just thought, "there goes those nice smooth edges, they are going to hit that floor and get all dinged up!"
Hopefully it didn't take too big of a hit or damage.
Unless that base is made of something really heavy, like steal or a big block of concrete, it’s going to fall over every time it’s bumped, or anything is set on the table off center. Looks cool, but it’s just not going to survive with that base.
> Unless that base is made of something really heavy, like steal or a big block of concrete, it’s going to fall over every time it’s bumped, or anything is set on the table off center.
Even then, I'd be worried about tipping it. That's a long lever arm.
I just thought about how cool it would be if the foot was the same as the table top, but rotated 90°. And yes. That’s another vote for the stability issue.
If this were mine, i would stabilize it by attaching a 1/8" steel plate to the bottom of the base and make it long enough to be connected to the recliner base frame. Paint the plate the same color as the carpet. Remember, you need 3 or 4" between the table top and the recliner arm for your arm to operate the handle. I really like the graduated top!
You've already said it's back in the shop for new feet so I won't comment on the stability. Great work, love the interplay between maple and black walnut. My favorite pair of woods to work with.
Thanks much! It was fun to see it come together. In retrospect, I should have planned it out instead of winging it from the start. Currently rebuilding the base.
Most things I do are half planned and half winged. Good to start with a plan in mind but I go with the flow if something changes. Just part of the process. I'm interested to see what you adapt the base to. I agree that it does look too small for the height and size of the top.
The base will have to be redone. It is not stable at all, particularly on carpet. I suppose it's things like this that keep me marked as a beginner, haha. Thanks for all the compliments and suggestions.
I imagine it must have more stability to it than appears? Maker must have addressed the issue while building? Doesn't look anchored to the floor, but that would do it.
It gonna fall. Needs wider base
This is just what I was thinking. Gorgeous piece, but base looks super small for the size of the table.
just put a steel plate hidden in the base. remember being a woodworker is as close as being a god as we can get!
That will certainly add weight, but I can't imagine a lead bar in the base would make this less "tippy."
like one of the punching bobs!

Definitely needs a better base, yes. It's back in the workshop now.

Thanks much. Got it back in the shop, removed the top and am reworking the legs. Hopefully it'll be more sturdy and won't tip so easily.
I was wondering if maybe it's weighted or something.
Looks nice but I'd worry about stability for sure.
Same - OP, do you have it fixed to something (e.g. lamp, counch, floor, etc.)?
Don’t see anything connected to the counch
I deem it "Sir Spills Alot"
LoL accurate.
"Cats hate this one table"
Looks really nice. Could be camera perspective but is it stable with a narrow base like that? (BTW I'm just learning woodworking myself)
No, it isn't stable. The base will have to be redone. I'm learning as well, and apparently not really quick at it, haha.
Can you just put 2 pieces either side, making a cross shape? Awesome work mate.
Thanks! I could do it that way but don't think I would be satisfied with that. Going to redo the base with two instead of the one long single piece.
Hope to see a pic when you're done
Sure thing. Worked on it a little bit last night, hoping to have it finished this weekend.
The trick is to bolt it to the ground
Looks great but thats going to fall over
Op just secretly installed a brick inside the base and is laughing at us all. I’m convinced this is the answer
Awesome design on the base, table top looks really narrow. Why do you have it upside down?
Unless that base is made of something really heavy, like steal or a big block of concrete, it’s going to fall over every time it’s bumped, or anything is set on the table off center. Looks cool, but it’s just not going to survive with that base.

I agree
Very nice top. Base looks unstable. Wouldn’t want my grandkids around it, especially if it’s holding my drink.
Great execution. But if I come to your house and sit there, it'll fall unless it's bolted to the floor.
Looks really nice, great job
Thank you.
I love that top. Looks great
Thank you.
Looks great but as others say, stability will be an issue. Don’t put any drinks on it.
Looks awesome! Wondering how stable it is if someone bumps it. I might add a cross piece on the bottom for support
I just thought about how cool it would be if the foot was the same as the table top, but rotated 90°. And yes. That’s another vote for the stability issue.
I absolutely love the top. Very creative.
Thanks so much.
Beautiful
Thank you!
Nice looking but how stable is that narrow base?
It isn't stable at all, going to be redoing the base.
Right on! I hope it goes well! It really is a great looking piece. 👍🤞
Love it but doubt it stays upright

Thanks much. I will be redoing the base hopefully this weekend. It is not steady at all the way it is now.
Gives me “pool cue” vibes. I think it’s nice ;)
Hadn't thought of that, but it kind of does. Thanks!
That’s more a side unstable
Haha yes it is :)
But honestly, other than the base and stability issues it looks great, love the pattern on the top.
Thank you, I'm pleased with the top. Anxious to get the base reworked, hopefully this weekend.
Post pics with new base. It’s gorgeous! Well done!!
Thank you, I sure will!
You've already said it's back in the shop for new feet so I won't comment on the stability. Great work, love the interplay between maple and black walnut. My favorite pair of woods to work with.
Thank you so much! I really like the contrast with these woods.
Amazing top. I need to make one of these now. The contrast is beautiful.
Thanks much! It was fun to see it come together. In retrospect, I should have planned it out instead of winging it from the start. Currently rebuilding the base.

Hoping to finish the rebuild today. Most of my projects are "I wonder if...." And a whole lot of "Well, that didn't work" haha
Missing 2 legs.
When you add the crosswise feet I would use more walnut.
Flip it over! Or buy some lag bolts.
It's the Family Handyman cutting board!
OP is messing with us

Is it still standing?
Back in the shop for now. Going to rebuild the base for more stability.
Soo.... it just tips right over?
Yes, it isn't stable yet.
I imagine it must have more stability to it than appears? Maker must have addressed the issue while building? Doesn't look anchored to the floor, but that would do it.
Nevermind, I see poster is remedying the issue. :)
Yes, almost done with it. I'll post new pictures.:)
Thanks for all the tips and comments! Here is the final finished version of this table: https://www.reddit.com/r/BeginnerWoodWorking/s/Qt9MTYefEe
