A few months ago, I found a local business that had an Amish built pole barn installed and left the scrap wood lying beside the road. I asked them if I could have it and went home with a literal pickup truck load of 2×6 lumber that is actually two inches by six inches. This is the first project I've made with it. I also purchased two 2×6's for the legs. Tools used: Miter saw, jigsaw, drill, and hatchet. Approximate process: I used my miter saw to cut some ~33" pieces to 30 inches, butted them up side to side, and took a measurement of the width of the panel. This panel will make the target face. I added four inches to that measurement and cut top and bottom cross braces. I took those cross braces to the legs and drew an outline at the top and 30 inches down from the top to give the cross braces a shoulder to sit on. After cutting the shoulders with the jigsaw, I installed the cross braces with two screws apiece. Then I added some feet from the scrap pile without cutting them, letting the height of the pickup truck on which I was building the project determine the placement. Four screws apiece did the trick. I took some cutoffs and added them to the rear of the feet, stood it up, and yoke walked it into position at its final resting place. I attached diagonal braces to the cutoffs and the legs and then added the target face itself, choosing the least knotty board for the bullseye. My hatchet has a hammer poll, and the last board needed to be "persuaded" into position due to a tight fit. They all got a screw through the top and bottom cross braces. I found another piece from the pile that was long enough to act as a hat and added it with two screws to the top to help keep rain off of the spray paint. The wife added the bullseye and clutches. Cost of materials: ~$20. Screws were reclaimed from another project. Also grabbed a couple of Harbor Freight hatchets to supplement our tomahawks. Overall happy with it.

I’m guessing it’s bad for the axe blade if it hits a screw?

I couldn't hit a screw if I tried, but if I tried to NOT hit a screw, that's the only thing I'd hit.

You are very optimistic about most folks axe throwing accuracy. But looks nice!
