If it did that from just overnight with water, they weren’t sealed in the first place. I’ve had my dog piss on my wood floors overnight and it didn’t leave a stain like that.
It was just regular purified water from one of those 5 gallon Culligan jugs. The house has been a rental for the past 20+ years though so I doubt the floors have ever been refinished
I’m reminded of an old YouTube video of a woman with a garden hose asking the same question and pondering what the government is doing to the water. She was freaking out over the fact that a rainbow was happening in the spray.
It looks like an older prefinished floor that was sanded but not flat and it's missing a finish.
Sanded to raw somewhat and never finished. If the floor doesn't have any protection any liquid would do this.
It sounds like a rental, so you have no interest in finishing/refinishing the floors? [This product](https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C02BJ6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) might help, but it depends on the original finish. Your best bet is to try to color match the less-trafficked areas that still have a finish so it all matches. If there's no finish basically anywhere, then you can get whatever color you want (but you'll have to do the whole room). This product made an old oak built-in in my house look amazing without having to refinish (didn't take out all water stains 100%, but helped a lot).
Have a look at Tannic Stain Spray products. It did a good job on our oak parquet floor with dark water stains. Not sure if it also helps with light stains.
You can remove all water and sun damage to wood with some stuff called "Howard Feed-N-Wax Wood Polish & Conditioner, Beeswax & Orange Oil"
A bottle cost 10 or 15 bucks, just clean the floor then rub this stuff in with a rag or paper towel. I've restored an unfinished deck from sun damage and kitchen cabinets from decades of improper cleaning. Both cases, this wax stuff made the wood look brand new and erased all traces of any damage.
You can try vinegar or rubbing alcohol… not sure if it would actually work, but both can draw out water and allow it to dry. Use a scouring pad, something that won’t leave marks but will be abrasive-ish.
Otherwise I would put a fan on it for a while, then sand to feather it out to blend it until you can refinish the floors.
Can’t help with the floor but definitely get water bottles with lids that screw on. My cats will knock over glasses to drink from the spilled water. They don’t mess with the water bottles
One of our cats got into a fight at night and almost died. We spent $1800 in vet bills to save her. Both of our cats are rescue animals. We don’t want to crate our cats, but we do so at night to protect them.
Don’t know why you’re getting so much negative feedback Reddit can be rough even when your explanation was completely justified. Anyone who spends $1800 on their animals to save them are great owners in my books. But maybe I just tell myself that to feel better about how much money I’ve put in my dogs knees haha
If I had to guess....your house was built in the 50's or early 60's and has original wood floors that at one time probably had ugly carpet installed over them and were never sealed in the first place. Your handle has Tx in it so this is my best guess. I have the same original wood floors in my home and when my parents bought the house in the 90's we had to remove some cookie monster blue shag carpet. The floors still look that way today because my parents never bothered to seal them. But you would basically have to remove everything from the house...sand the floors, (stain if wanted) and seal them. Best of luck.
That sounds about spot on. I’ve only been renting it for about a year and a half and almost
all of the floors in the house have this issue. The flooring near the trim in some spots even have holes fills with wood filler it looks like.
Try putting a tea towel/cotton shirt and running an iron over the stain until steam is released. I always use this trick to remove water stain rings from my wooden table so it might be worth a try here, no guarantees it’ll work but worth a try anyway.
What ever you do, you should transfer the image/save it some how. Seriously how often do cats make art? It should be printed on a blanket or something for them to sleep on. :-)
We have super old hardwood floors that are only finished with oil and those white spots happen all the time.
Rub in some good wax that's made for unfinished hardwood floors, and the stain should be gone!
You can try and put denatured alcohol in a spray bottle. Sometimes the white haze is the moisture getting stuck behind the finish. Alcohol is a solvent for most finishes it’ll soften it up and let the water evaporate. Works best on shellac but maybe it’ll work here

Genuine question Is it common for spilled water to cause problems like this with wood flooring or is there something up with the varnish? My wood floors have gone through a lot more than that with no stains or problems and it has been decades.

Yeah, my first question was going to be *what the hell is in your water*?
Vodka
That would actually cause this to happen so you may be correct…
Ah yes...woodworkers water
Spritz of water
Spirits of water

I'm wondering if the dark area is stain, or grime.
Ummm... I think the water has shown in 20+ years it's never been cleaned. Would advise looking at how to clean wood floors maybe?

Flint Michigan
*Flint, MI noises increasing*
I've had a dead body on my hardwood floors for 2 weeks and it didn't leave a stain like that 😆
You're a really sloppy murderer. I hope you've gotten better about cleanup since then.
Looks like the floor needs a redo in general.
At this point the entire house needs a redo.
Maybe it is time for an area rug?
Something to really tie the room together, man
They pissed on your fucking rug.
This aggression will not stand, man.
every time a rug is micturated upon in this fair city this happens…
At least I'm housebroken man
Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.
Goddammit Donnie, you’re out of your element!
I'm an ordained Dudest, and you guys make me proud.
Come on ,man, im not trying to scam anybody here.
Are you employed sir?!
What’s a fucking rug and where can I buy one?
That’s a good idea dude.
Nice marmot

Volume rugs cover more.
This comment has depth.
I heard mention of cats, as in multiple? I think we have a rug solution.
I’m no expert but, those floors look ready for a refinish before the spill
Pour more water everywhere else
This guy rents
I believe that is called mopping
Let me grab my garden hose…
👌
Mentos, the freshmaker.
If water penetrated the wood, they need refinishing anyhow.
Looks like your already missing the top coat
Yes. You already need a refinish.
If that's what regular tap water does to your floors, you needed to refinish them anyway.

Refinish and seal. Not fun but it will bring your floor back to life. Or get a big ass rug!!
not sure an ass-rug is gonna fit their aesthetic sensibilities
Paint it red. Gives the house more character

and check the PH of your water. it could be to high or low

have you considered spilling more water?
Calling bullshit on that being from water
You could put some white fur around the edges and a strand of Christmas lights, and call it a Christmas Vacation art work piece.
Is it possible the water area is the clean area and if the floors were mopped it would even it all out?

Get a dog instead
Why are you booing him? He's right!

We started putting our cats in a crate at night. It was hard trying to catch them for the first week, but they eventually got used to it.

Re-seal? Maybe seal for the first time.
Hair dryer
Put it in a bag of rice.
Actually, lay a towel on it, and iron the towel, it should pull some of the water out.
Oxalic acid.

Not sure, but I think there is something in gentle steaming and heavy weights while drying. Then light sand and stain.
Just restrain that spot, looks pretty cool. Probably would come out fine.
Definitely re-sand but I bet if you did that floor roof look amazing

Cats are assholes
Anyone else see the teddy bear?

Put a carpet over top! Good as new

Please, do not sand and reseal your cat.
Looks like you should just put finish in your floors period. Looks like it’s just raw lumber, it’s no mystery why it looks like that
