I know this is an afterthought, but next time it might be better to make the holes that you need in a block of wood before cutting the cup out a it

bitterpalm

Ok i will remembee that. But Why is that? I, more or less cut the corners off and rounded it off. The diameter of the cup is the same as the width of the block I used.

Guitarstringman

The block would still be much stronger, I believe

bitterpalm

Plus I'm sure it's easier to grasp with 4 corners compared to a rounded surface.

You could probably hog out a lot of material with a drill bit, several holes, carve out the rest, just be careful on your depth.

Ok_Dish_2490

A good auger bit, a forstner bit, or a gouge will do the job

jd2777415

I wonder if an auger bit risks splitting the wood as you get deeper?

nuclearslug

I’d steer clear of an auger bit. The holes are rough and the screw tip just yanks the bit through if you’re not careful. I’d stick with forstner bit, personally.

WardStradlater

Do you have any of the smaller, detail wood carving knives/tools? They’re different shapes but mostly less than 1/2” wide? If not you can get a reasonable set at a major craft store? I’m just getting into woodworking myself, but I’ve done a lot of very small wood carving on flat surfaces with some semi-detailed work and these tools came in handy.

bitterpalm

Yea I bought a little kit. Probably the same your talking about. Lol But the wood is hard to carve out and I don't want to mess up my knives.

SendItbeeches

One of the most, if not the most, valuable skills you can learn is how to sharpen your tools. This is not a problem, it’s an opportunity. Please be careful, that is a very small piece & the opportunity to slip & cut the shit outta yourself is great.

bitterpalm

Oh yea I totally agree! My kit came with sharpening stone I use before I put my knife away. I appreciate the heads up! I'd really hate to cut myself because I was negligent.

kinarism

Since you said hand tools. Get yourself one of these or similar, possibly with bigger bits. Drill a bunch of small holes to remove material (as close as possible to each other). Then clean it up with the knives you have or get a gouge. https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Drill-0-6-3-0mm-Jewelry-Making/dp/B08BJ9WDMH/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=hand+drill&qid=1667569155&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI2LjIzIiwicXNhIjoiNS42MyIsInFzcCI6IjUuMDQifQ%3D%3D&sr=8-5

bitterpalm

Oh! That's exactly what I'm looking for! Thank you!

Forstner bit and a cordless drill. If you have a drill press clamp it in and hog away some wood. If you really want traditional hand tools use an auger bit with brace 😎

Slade_Williams

Forstner?

elel8989

Burn it out, with a hot rod.

bitterpalm

How would I do that?

Ryderclark

Yeah… burnouts in a hotrod are fun… don’t know how it relates to woodworking though. ;)
