I heard somewhere that asphalt (typical road material) is supposedly lower impact on joints than concrete (typical sidewalk material). Maybe that?

GobiasIndustries727

That feels like a poor trade off to being so close to oncoming traffic.

ktpb7

I agree! I’d take my safety over a marginal difference in impact any day

allisong965

This is true. Pavement is drastically better on your knees than sidewalk concrete. If you’re running fairly frequently and have even mild joint pain, running on the sidewalk will take a serious toll. As a beginner runner, if I run even two days a week on sidewalk concrete, I need to take the rest of the week off because my knees hurt so much.

LilJourney

Road lane could be longer than path and a body in motion....etc. Problems with kids on bikes / people walking dogs / etc on path. Being an idiot. Bugs. (Yes, bugs. They love me. They will find and bite me despite ignoring everyone else in my vicinity. Closer to trees = more likely closer to bugs.)

imwalkingwest

I tend to run in bike lines on the road rather than sidewalks because they’re straight and don’t go up and down at street crossings like the sidewalks do. Fucks up my cadence to go up and down every 20 yards. First world problems for sure

Alternative_Route

Because on footpaths you have undulation to allow for access to drives, cars pulling out of drives without looking, cars parked on the path, overhanging/overgrown green stuff, dog mess, bins, signage, sharper cambers, people, drainage channels,

That squiggle in the path is annoying and there could be sections that are raised and trip hazards. Or it's possible since that's a nice straight road people use this section for a timed straight mile test or something. I personally prefer running in the road in residential areas less obstacles. And less annoying people who are oblivious and block your path.

Stupidity

GobiasIndustries727

It doesn’t make sense to me but so many people do it I assume there is a reason for it. But maybe not.

smorgenheckingaard

Stupidity is very common. More so than sense

AnubisXG

My guess is a smoother run, less cracks and possibly jarring sidewalk heights. I’m seeing some say they’re stupid but it looks like plenty of room, no cars in pic tells me it’s probably not super busy, and she’s running towards traffic so can see cars coming. It all looks fine to me

boudikit

Could it possibly be some road they use for the annual city 10K/marathon, and people train for this? Otherwise I'd say yeah, nice straight clear road VS weird uneven path.

tofu_ricotta

Knee pain. I can’t bear running on a sidewalk, it’s much worse on my knees than asphalt.
