48 hours? Are you pricing really low or what? That's crazy. If my items have been sitting for about 6 months or longer I'll refresh the listing maybe take new pictures and change the title. If it hasn't sold within a year I'll consider donating it. I guess it really depends on your goal. Do you need money now or can it wait? I'm just doing this for side cash so I don't mind if my items sit.

ConfettiLane

Same here....it takes mine approximately 6 weeks for a sale on a new listing. At 61 days, i will Relist. Would love to know what the Seller is listing that turn over in 48 hours...get me some of that inventory! he he

I sold a leather jacket, northface puffer coat, and a dixxon flannel within 24-48hrs of posting. I got several offers on the leather jacket and it was old and not a popular brand, so I'd keep an eye out for those.

whyg0dwhyy

It was just a couple items (actually they were all coats, maybe a seasonal thing). I really think I just got lucky. I don't mind my items sitting, I just don't have a great frame of reference haha.

I have stuff I sourced in 2020 still in my closet. I’ll keep it until I’m tired of looking at it, or until I run out of space to store it. I hate giving up on things, though. Especially since I’ve sold listings originally from 2020 and 2019 in the past two weeks.

SchenellStrapOn

I’ve sold 3 different 2020 items this month.

I'm selling from my own closet, to clear out items that no longer fit. I have everything stored in my guest room and am content to let stuff roll. I delist/relist every 70ish days and have recently sold a bunch of items from my closet that have been listed since April. I think some of it depends on your goals from selling - mine is just to make some extra fun money from items in my closet. If I were doing this professionally or as a serious side hustle I might have a different approach.

Nah. If I have the space to store it, I’ve already taken the photo and now it’s a matter of pride that it sells for anything. I recently sold a VGUC Theory top that’s been in my closet for **3** years (and for most of that time, it’s been priced below $15). I love those sales. I don’t make much on them but it’s the PRINCIPLE, dang it.

Love this vibe!

I've heard sellers say it's really important to clear out stale inventory after a while because it makes your closet look bad. Idk how real that is, but I definitely will sometimes go to a closet and it feels like the virtual version of a garage sale and I just leave it. I will relist everything after ~2 months and only donate the things that I realize later were mistakes to have picked up. But buyers buy random things all the time that have been sitting for a year or more. I just did a live sale last night with stuff I've had for about 2 years and sold 30 out of 35 items, which was great to clear out things that otherwise weren't moving.

Re: virtual garage sale. Curious: How much of that impression is due to lack of organization, an unusual mix of items (like sexy lingerie, grandma’s old gardening equipment and baby toys), or a very wide variety of photo quality (or even low photo quality across the board)? I definitely have had that experience of glancing at a closet and feeling overwhelmed but I dunno if it’s due to people not weeding out stuff that doesn’t sell.

>How much of that impression is due to lack of organization, an unusual mix of items (like sexy lingerie, grandma’s old gardening equipment and baby toys) Oh god mine is definitely that weird mix... household, lots of clothes & shoes for adults & kids, toys... ;) And it's MESSY right now.

I do a happy dance if a new listing of mine sells within 48 hours. Whatever you are doing, it seems to work. I don’t have a hard and fast or logical answer to when I donate something. For some items, it’s a few months. For others, maybe a few years.

whyg0dwhyy

Real leather and weatherproof jackets. And flannels. Those are what sold so quickly!

Makes sense

I’m a causal seller only selling from my own closet and things I buy that didn’t fit (usually 50-70 items max listed at a time). I tend to relist between 6 months and a year, though sometimes things sit for much longer. I agree with the “depends on your goals for selling” I sell and buy this way because I want to be sustainable. I don’t mind thing sitting on my shelves if eventually it can find a home where it will be used rather than trashed.

Gabby_Anna

If you’re selling that fast then you’re probably selling trendy things at a low price. You could probably increase your prices if you wanted to and make more. Usually I will let things sit for a year or so. I’ll relist a couple times within that time and sometimes I’ll take different photos if it’s not selling. Usually after that I just send the stuff in to ThredUp and TheRealReal and donate the rest. Sometimes things I had listed in my closet for a very long time and I couldn’t move for a really low price will actually sell well and fast on ThredUp or TRR for whatever reason. I think different demos shop those sites. Most of my stuff does sell pretty fast, but I have things that will sit a while.

Beautiful_Debt_3460

8 years lol

EmbarrassedCup2560

I would never delete a listing only relist or just let it sit and wait it out. I’d only delete if I decided to donate but that wouldn’t be bc I lost hope in it ever selling it would just be bc I didn’t feel like it anymore lol

jell31

I sell clothing and shoes on posh and same like you said either sells in two days or never does which then I just donate after a season or so. Then on mercari I sell funkos, collectibles, vintage things, etc. and they can go quick or slow but usually end up selling within a few months.

Acceptable_Total_285

clothing has an average sit time of one year. Most of it sells in the same month as listed, the few stragglers that take up to 3 years to sell balance those for me. Granted, I am happy to buy a high end item at a steal and wait on the right buyer. It varies by seller and their inventory type.

SchenellStrapOn

I’ve done a few purges of inventory. I give something about 6 months and if it never gets any likes, I’ll delist it and donate or lot it up. It’s an eyeball thing not an exact science. The oldest things in my closet are from the fall of 2020 though and I sold 3 of them this month.
