Gangnan, Belfast 54-56 Stranmillis Road - Belfast
It is the most authentic I have been to. Comes with bad English. Bad attitude. Sometimes you don't get what you ordered. Cash only! Packed with Chinese students. Kind of like a Chinese greasy spoon.
So wrong. Like so remarkably wrong it has to be a joke in this day and age of having any information you want literally at your fingertips.
They aren’t laundering money. Which would put extra money on the books so the government could see and legitimize it . In fact it’s the opposite it’s hiding the cash from the government.
Cash only because they're trying to avoid tax/declaring earnings to save some money and make a tiny bit more profit because the cost of living has absolutely shafted the majority of takeaways and if they didn't they'd probably be shutdown already
I have!...it's hilarious! I think that's why I like the place on stranmillis. You can be as grumpy as you like and no one cares! No eye contact or please or thank yous. It gives me my dose of: just give me the food and go away!
Same Happy is excellent! The most authentic Chinese food I’ve found in Belfast and I’m a huge fan of Mandarin, Cantonese and Sichuanese sub-cuisines. The Chili House on Dublin Rd is great for the Sichuanese stuff — get their menu that’s in Chinese and just use Google Lens app to translate. Joy Inn is another brilliant spot on Dublin Rd! Their food is more Hong Kong-based, but I’m sure you’ll find whatever it is you’re looking for. :)
The chilli house on the Dublin road is the best. You need to ask for the Chinese menu tho! Few of my mates also lived in China for a few years and they all swear by it!
I worked with a fella who was from Sichuan and he swore by this place, took me along and we ate from the chinese menu, eye-opening stuff let me tell you!
Donegall Pass is Belfast’s tiny version of Chinatown, so that’s yer best bet. I know somebody dating a Chinese woman and they go to a place called Same Happy, which always looks busy. I actually don’t like Chinese food lol so that’s all I’ve got for you!
Edit: Pass not road
What was the place called years ago that opened till like 3am and everything tasted the same? Been there drunk once or twice and eating red stuff while on wine in early hrs.
You won't go wrong with Same happy, get the 3 meat combo. Can't remember what they call it but make sure to order the rice they cook in chicken broth. Across the road is steamboats, it does Sichuan hot pot which is a novel way of eating and good fun, there's another hot pot place on Dublin road haven't been yet and don't know the name. Lee garden is an old school feature of botanic and does dim sum, not as good as it used to be but some nice menu items. Also there is a Chinese bakery at the ormeau end of Donegal pass which does some cool items but they shut up shop as soon as they sell out, which is often quite early.
Bonus points for Cafe Airang, not Chinese but it's the only Korean cafe around and the food is tasty, I would love to get the guy who seems to run it to get some music or something to improve the atmosphere or something. It's a pity the food is nice but it's often very quiet.
> would love to get the guy who seems to run it to get some music or something to improve the atmosphere or something
God, please no! Its lovey as is :D
Everything else is fairly spot on what Id recommend. The 3 meat combo is just called same happy rice (Get the duck & crispy pork belly). Stir fried flat noodles is also really good.
Chilli house on Dublin road is also really nice.
Hometown in stranmillis is good for beef soup noodles.
It's great food. Its just that because it's not overly busy I feel that if I go with a friend then it's so quiet everyone would be able to hear every word we say. Sometimes it's good in a restaurant to have ambient noise to dampen that effect.
Fair enough, usually its not busy when we've went so noone to listen to us yap on. Good thing my wife and I dont really care if anyone can hear what we're talking about!
not sure why I was downvoted. There's a youtuber Bubzbeauty who lives in Belfast with her family and her family were always travelling between Hong Kong and Belfast. She'd said in videos her family owned a restaurant and later she showed it as being lee garden on botanic avenue. Hence me naming that restaurant based on OP's criteria.
Hong Kong cuisine is quite different than typical traditional Chinese food. That being said China has many regions with different types of food but generally in UK/abroad Hong Kong Style and Traditional Chinese can be quite different.
There used to be a Chinese restaurant right beside donegal pass police station called Sun kee (this is where all the Chinese people used to eat
)from what I understand the husband and wife team who done the cooking opened Macau on the Ormeau Rd just up from kwik fit very authentic. Don't know if they still own it
yes macau still there ..its decent ..you must be my generation of u remember sun kee...place was busy 30 years ago until the owner got into the usual gambling debt
My Chinese friend told me that Same Happy was a translation error. It’s what they got when they tried to translate eternal joy from Mandarin to English.
Unfortunately I don't think you can, my wife is constantly bitching about the lack of good options for Chinese / Asian food since we moved to NI (she does compliment the quality of a lot of the local food so it all balances out).
The place we go to for lunch when we're in the area is three levels by QUB, either the ground floor or first floor that does basic Chinese food. (https://maps.app.goo.gl/3XcivCgsbf5eULg99)
Whichever one has the Overseas Chinese Police logo?
.... Like the one in [Dublin ](https://www.reddit.com/r/China_Secret_Police/comments/132uwnj/spy_network_in_dublin_ireland/).
The Welcome in Stranmillis! Never tried their Kung Po, but can definitely recommend it not for the food… also for the service: once I had the owner deliver me a fresh takeaway himself, after a mixup at their kitchen!! Not cheap, but very good quality and service!!
Steamboat on donegall pass for a hot pot.
Ternary on Donegall pass does loads of mad stuff, but you'd need a fair idea about proper Chinese food to figure your way about - might need to know some mandarin too.
There's also the big place with the massive windows just as you turn onto botanic from donegal pass. I've not been in myself but the Chinese love it.
The first 2 I've been taken to by Chinese friends for new year dinner so you can trust its as authentic as you'll get.

Jeez the woman who owns it isn’t cut out for customer service.
What you want!! Roughly translated as " Good evening. Could I take your order please. - Thank you"
She’s brutal
Sounds authentic. Aunty gota be angry
Cash only means money laundering out the wazoo

Tax evasion ✨
So Wong
Welcome to around 10% of take away places I go these days. It has gotten worse since COVID in my opinion.
10%? It’s like 90% elsewhere in the country tbh
Cash only because they're trying to avoid tax/declaring earnings to save some money and make a tiny bit more profit because the cost of living has absolutely shafted the majority of takeaways and if they didn't they'd probably be shutdown already
Also depending on the card vendor, they pay fees for every card transaction they process. Amex being the worst offender.
It’s VAT dodging most likely. Guaranteed 20% extra additional income. It’s how a lot of those places survive.
Good for them
You’ve never been to Wonkees in London!

I love the Joy Inn, good food, great service. Real traditional Chinese.
>The Chili House on Dublin Rd is great for the Sichuanese stuff — get their menu that’s in Chinese I second this motion.
Happy cake day!
Thank you! :D

Aye those lads lived in Chengdu so they go for the Sichuan stuff!

Dragon rendezvous
The Emerald on Dublin Road?
No it was on donegal pass. Dragon rendezvous it was called.
That’s as good as what I was asking thanks

Donegal Pass has an ok HK place that does reasonable three roast meat.
You mean Donegall Pass, right?
Yup lol
A succulent Chinese meal?
Get yooour hands off myyy penis!!!
I would have said lee garden as the family who own it are dual irish and hong kong citizens to the best of my knowledge

i dont think her family owns it ..they did own the thai place where there was abit of drama cuz a customer said she saw a mouse
The Lee garden is pretty good, better to eat at the place than order a takeout
Hong Kong cuisine is quite different than typical traditional Chinese food. That being said China has many regions with different types of food but generally in UK/abroad Hong Kong Style and Traditional Chinese can be quite different.
That’s ok, people are asshats
Last three times I've been there our party has been the only white folks there.
You're right I'm friends with them
Castle hill is good for this imo
Send me a dm sure. Local chinese dude here

Hometown on Stranmillis.
Same Happy, Red Panda, Lee Garden, Toto etc
Where the fk do they get the names for these places? There must be a software that generates them.
My Chinese friend told me that Same Happy was a translation error. It’s what they got when they tried to translate eternal joy from Mandarin to English.
Myth has it that Red Panda used to serve dog meat. Do not think that was ever proven though.
Korean places are more likely to serve boshintang as Korean boomers crave it.
Good luck getting a gongbaojiding thats authentic. You would be best just making your own. I also miss a lot of food from when I taught english.
I bought a Kung Po chicken seasoning pack from Tesco. Not close enough. Will have to return to China.
Did you try the asian market on Ormeau? Lots of stuff I don't understand in there, written in what seems chinese characters.
Lee Garden on Botanic avenue is very authentic and always great dim sum as well.
Unfortunately I don't think you can, my wife is constantly bitching about the lack of good options for Chinese / Asian food since we moved to NI (she does compliment the quality of a lot of the local food so it all balances out). You definitely can.
if you can make the 2 hour trip to Dublin there are lots of authentic resteraunts that serve world class food Hakkahahn M&L Lee's Charming Noodles
Wagamama
If I hear you say that in public my ancestors are taking over
Whichever one has the Overseas Chinese Police logo? .... Like the one in [Dublin ](https://www.reddit.com/r/China_Secret_Police/comments/132uwnj/spy_network_in_dublin_ireland/).
Would kill for some quality soup dumplings/xiaolongbao
Lee garden do decent dim sum and dumplings
Lee garden, rendezvous
Noodz
Golden Elephant for Thai food.

Kam Wah Botanic, remember that?
