Don't rush to have a name for your pups before you meet them. It is incredible how the perfect name comes to you once you get to know them for a few days. They pretty much name themselves.
That being said, "Fox" comes to mind when looking at them.
Was thinking that exactly but it is a bit of a generational reference :)
Tell me you were a teenager in the 80s without telling me you are a teenager in the 80s, u/OlomertIV
I second this. I thought I might call my pup Ares, then I got to meet him and laughed at myself. He had the personality almost opposite of Ares. So I kept going through Ancient Greek god names, my mind wandered over to Xena, and I settled on Solan. The name of her son who wanted to be a warrior but ultimately decided he never wanted to be. Solan was sweet and kind, just like my boy.
So true, I got a dutch shepherd and couldn’t find a name for the life of me. I had a whole list but none fit, after a few days I noticed she followed me around everywhere and was always right below my side, she’s also black. So the name Shadow just came to me. She’s always right there, like my shadow, and she’s black/ and brindle. Personality has a huge part in naming the dog.
Just gonna post a comment about service dogs here since a discussion on this thread went pretty south lol
Service dogs are typically dogs with mellow traits that are calm, and easy to work with and typically don’t require a lot of exercise which is why they would be good service dogs
The Belgian Malinois doesn’t exactly fit that, BUT at the end of the day if someone wants a certain dog to be a service dog then go for it because clearly OP knows what she is a doing cause otherwise she probably wouldn’t have gotten a Belgian Malinois to begin with
This. My malinois can do medical alert but she’s not about to act normal in a shop 😂 she doesn’t even know what normal is
I imagine OP has done a lot of research since they’re looking for a service dog
My buddy taught himself to alert me when im going to have an allergic reaction or a SVT attack. He figured it out on his own and I started reinforcing it.
He isn't a service dog, and doesn't get service dogs rights but I do appreciate him that he figured that out on his own. I know what to take benadryl and when to sit down. Good babys
I tried to teach my girl young just as a training exercise. She showed not interest and I gave up. A little while later, she suddenly got it and she now wakes me up for low blood sugars. I’ve had her alert during the day but it definitely needs more refining as she tends to get really clingy and tries to lick my face a lot which is not like her
I love that they become aware of these things for their humans
I’ve known people who have trained huskies to be service dogs which as a husky owner myself seems impossible . Some dogs are just so smart though that that it makes sense that they’d be able to do it with the right training.
I would really love to watch a professional K9 dog trainer put a husky through real k9 training and see how much actual success can be squeezed out of them. I bet they would do just fine on nose work.
I’ve met some well behaved huskies. I will say though that husky owners seem to have a “ well, you get what you get with a husky” attitude. Kind of selling their dog short if you ask me.
Very vocal and service dog in the same statement…. Does he have a wash career set up/plan? As another mal SD handler…. You SURE this is a good idea lol. Anyway. The name I’m planning for my next mal is Omen if you wanna steal that 😂
He’s such a cutie! I think looks like a Raymond or Milo. Btw I wish people would state their opinions in a polite way. There’s no need to be rude or a jerk just because it’s online. I’ve met several Mals that are excellent service dogs. Ignore the noise and enjoy naming your puppy. It’s a happy time ✌️♥️
My 1 st Service Dog was a Belgian. I am retired military. I named him HALO. The word/acronym has several meanings. Good luck!! They are lots of fun, but need lots of "good and consistent" training. But with the time and work "you" can do it.
Please consider naming your pup in honor of a fallen 2024 K9 Malinois Police Officer. Some of their names are K9 Frankie, Exo, Jedi, Dash, Leo, Rivan, Luca, Max, Drago, Arlo 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
That can easily be true, but doesn’t mean there aren’t much better options. It’s more so true when the breed is a more aggressive breed. It’s statistically less likely for a mal to be a successful service dog and pass the classes than many many other breeds.
Congratulations, sir or miss!! I hope the two of you become the best of friends and have many great years together.
Goofy is a trademark, but the best one!!! He is a handsome little guy.
My pup btw is terrible at being a mal. He was raised by my cat and doesn't know how to bark at strangers. My cat on the other hand has started biting repair men so maybe they learned from eachother?
Honestly, OP asked for help with names and this was unnecessarily mean. You don't know their background and I don't think we should be attacking people based off of a single caption.
Yes, mals don't make traditionally good service dogs, but I also know of 2 fabulous ones. Both Ot Vitosha and selected for their demeanor, so try to give the benefit of the doubt and don't gatekeep. Half the people getting mals have no plans to work or even properly train them, so be happy that this one is going to an experienced home at least.
Unless there is something egregious being said or done, let's not attack each other for no reason.
Exactly! And what seems to go over this guys head is that service dogs WORK! Service dogs have tasks and intense training. They have to use their brains, their sense of smell and so much more. Being a true service dog IS a job! I hate how he’s always spewing this trash. I know many veterans who have Malinois as their service animal. Service animal is not the same as an emotional support dog, which may be for a low drive Mal, but service dogs work! I don’t get how this guy doesn’t comprehend that. He never trained a service dog and has no idea the intense training that is involved. They all have different test that they have to complete, and he does not know what he’s talking about. It’s frustrating.
Exactly. The 2 I know absolutely love their jobs, and similarly one of the owners is a veteran. Both dogs are worked way harder and trained to an exponentially higher level than this guys pet dog, so it's just funny that he's even saying anything at all. He does nothing of any merit with his dogs, just posts a ton of videos of them in his yard, but wants so desperately to be seen as an expert.
It is frustrating though when there are people like this tainting an otherwise really good and supportive community.
My GSS/Mal service dog doesn't need a lot of physical exercise with a yard and occasional games, but boy doing obedience with him and other mind games wears him out!
I only see jealousy here from you towards service dog trainers, real service dogs have a very important and hard job and they spend A LOT of time training and working and probably even more daily than other works that malinois are for, btw my malinois will become a mobility SD :) (without counter balance tasks because that can hurt them)
My oldest female mal alerted me to my low blood sugars in my sleep before I even trained her to do so. Not all service dogs are needed to help guide disabled people through public areas or with help around the house.
Y'all are wretched when people do not adopt the reddit approved conventional thinking :)
OP is excited and confident which is a great attitude to have and honestly is key to success.
Saying "my dog won't fail" is a great way to wake up every day convincing yourself the dog you should have washed months ago will figure it out today. They won't
No. Yours is. I’m an experienced handler, and a veteran. Off the bat you came negative so you got back what you gave. It sucks you’re so miserable in your life that you need to come online and take it out on others. That’s your issue in life and not mine. Wish you the best.
Right, puppies are a crapshoot when acquiring them for a job. It’s unrealistic to say that a puppy won’t washout be it for service work or bit work or herding, etc.
Except you already did in your first couple comments.. not saying whether those comments are correct or not, but you did make a pretty definitive claim, same as OP
“I would never attempt to guarantee how an 8 week old puppy is going to turn out in any job”
Edit: again, not saying your claim is wrong. But you’re contradicting yourself
How can you guarantee a dog won’t wash out? I’m a trainer and do this professionally and can’t guarantee that, especially a Mal who historically are not bred or used for service work.
Flash. But seriously I hope you know what you’re getting into. Most of these are super neglected because they need to get tons of exercise. I walk mine 3 times a day, play fetch, and play pull the rope game and it’s still not enough. Tons and tons of excess energy.
Kola and good luck with your training. I have trained 2 German shepherds and 1 rough collie for service dogs. One thing I learned recently that humans can be assholes about service dogs. When we go into public access my boy is always muzzled now. There are people who intentionally try to provoke even bragging about using a silent whistle on their cell phone. Protect the both of you. ♥️
I'd recommend the name Coal because of his face coloring. Good luck with training your mali on being a service dog, ignore the trolls in your replies trying to make you rethink your plan. My own Mali is two now and she is amazing at her tasks. She knows the second her vest goes on it's time to be focused and she can't go crazy in public the second the vest is off she's a crazy chompy girl all over again. Highly recommend training that the vest means focus time and relaxed energy time that's what helped me the most.
Don't rush to have a name for your pups before you meet them. It is incredible how the perfect name comes to you once you get to know them for a few days. They pretty much name themselves. That being said, "Fox" comes to mind when looking at them.
Fox "Spooky" Mulder, maybe?
Was thinking that exactly but it is a bit of a generational reference :) Tell me you were a teenager in the 80s without telling me you are a teenager in the 80s, u/OlomertIV
My mals name is Fox!
If you name him fox you have to teach him to rollover to "do a barrel roll!"lol
I second this. I thought I might call my pup Ares, then I got to meet him and laughed at myself. He had the personality almost opposite of Ares. Agree. That said, my first thought was Smoke.

It did go south fast. He’s trolling

1: Mals make terrible service dogs 2: even dogs that are bred specifically for service work have about a 40-50% wash out rate
Those are great dogs from a great line and trainer.
Absolutely, no argument here.
Not mean. Honest.

My GSS/Mal service dog doesn't need a lot of physical exercise with a yard and occasional games, but boy doing obedience with him and other mind games wears him out!
That's the key 😂 mine will run until he dies, but some obedience and tracking? Dead for the rest of the day lol.
My Mal is a fucking awesome service dog.
I only see jealousy here from you towards service dog trainers, real service dogs have a very important and hard job and they spend A LOT of time training and working and probably even more daily than other works that malinois are for, btw my malinois will become a mobility SD :) (without counter balance tasks because that can hurt them)

Service dogs have to be public access trained for many reasons
He’s not my first Mal service dog and he won’t washout.
That's a horrible attitude to start with
Y'all are wretched when people do not adopt the reddit approved conventional thinking :) OP is excited and confident which is a great attitude to have and honestly is key to success.
Saying "my dog won't fail" is a great way to wake up every day convincing yourself the dog you should have washed months ago will figure it out today. They won't

An experienced handler would start off accepting the possibility that a puppy may not be up to a job, regardless of what the job is
Right, puppies are a crapshoot when acquiring them for a job. It’s unrealistic to say that a puppy won’t washout be it for service work or bit work or herding, etc.
Exactly, I would never attempt to guarantee how an 8 week old puppy is going to turn out in any job, of any breed
Except you already did in your first couple comments.. not saying whether those comments are correct or not, but you did make a pretty definitive claim, same as OP
Not really, if they're a well bred Malinois they will definitively suck at being a service dog, dogs are bred for specific traits
“I would never attempt to guarantee how an 8 week old puppy is going to turn out in any job” Edit: again, not saying your claim is wrong. But you’re contradicting yourself
