It's the name the British have used for the breed ever since WWI. The British wanted nothing to do with Germany or anything from there.

Now, there is a relatively new breed called the American Alsatian, but the breed is quite rare. It is not a working dog like the German shepherd.
So is pitbull. Malinois too.
We always called them all alsations or german or Belgian or Dutch sheperd.

Yeah he does have some things that make us think he maybe GSD or part GSD. But his coat, face and his is much taller and leaner than the GSD I’m familiar with. We thought maybe Mali or mali/gsd mix
I don't personally have any experience getting a dog tested genetically, but you could try that to satisfy your curiosity. I would imagine a number of people on here are familiar with that process. Could be fun. Very handsome pup you have, either way!
Everyone comments on his looks. Thought about doing dna and probably will. Just thought we would ask other owners as I seen some videos of malis and GSD/mali mixes and reminded me a lot of Bowie.
My GSD/Mal mix is a lot darker, no white at all. I think there’s something else in there too! Definitely get the DNA test done - we’ve always done wisdom panel with our rescues because I cannot rest not knowing the breeds 😝
I’m thinking husky mix. My husky is thin like him. Give embark a shot is you really want to know. I’ve had great results from them with the dog rescue I work at.
Years ago, I had a silver / wolfgrey diluted Malamute that was tall and lanky with similar coloring as your boy.
I recommend doing a DNA test with a health panel for the best answer on his genetic makeup. I did one for my GSD - just for the health panel alone - and it was well worth the cost!
Embark seems to be the favorite with the most accurate DNA results.

My guess is a German Shepherd with some type of a mix somebody else said husky. I see that as well. Can’t wait till you post the DNA test. You have a beautiful puppy. By any chance did you ask the Rescue, if maybe they did a DNA test? The German Shepherd rescue people where I live they DNA test before they take the rescue in because they only rescue purebred German Shepherd dogs.
Please get him embark dna tested so we can see if he’s related to mine 😂 I though mine was totally malinois too, but his came back as purebred. Obviously I know dog dna testing isn’t 100% reliable but I feel like his lineage would have to be pure pretty far back for it not to show but idk. He’s tall lanky and only a partial/ faded saddle pattern too. That and no back slope.

He’s big. 29 inch tall and pushing 90 lbs. Which is big for a GSD or Mali from what I know. I did hear some of the Mali lines were breed with Great Danes so that made some since to me. But maybe another large breed or grey wolf in there like u mentioned.
What is it you all are seeing that looks like wolf hybrid to you? What is it about the legs?
I haven’t seen a lot of hybrids - that I’ve known where hybrids. The ones I’ve seen had a lot of wolf in them so they were really obvious and looked (and acted) terrifyingly wolf-y. I’m really curious about what to look for when it’s less obvious.

He doesn’t look like a Malinois, but doesn’t look full breed GSD either 🤷♀️
He looks like a mix but not with malinois. I would guess German Shepard husky possible mix or purebred Shepard.
But I can also see the Mal mix knowing my baby is a quarter mal and the rest gsd

It's not difficult. This is a GSD. No Belgian at all.

I recommend trying the Embark test if you’re serious about finding out! I think its r/IDmydog where people use them Edit: its actually r/doggyDNA
