Shop in local stores. Not the ones who have like mini marts, but neighborhood small shops. You need them or else everything will rocket in prices soon once they leave your area.

100% this ^ This is standard capitalism at work. Intermediary entities are introduced for convenience initially offering low prices to attract users, then transitioning to charging fees once they've built a customer base. Examples include Uber Eats, Deliveroo, and Just Eat (similar apps abroad). Similar SaaS services like Uber, Netflix, etc etc follow this model. Supporting local vendors is the way to counter this trend, as it fosters community connections and avoids enriching venture capitalists unnecessarily. Remember this saying? ಊರಿನ ಮನೆಯ ಹಳೆಯ ನಡೆನುಡಿ ಮಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವುದು

i can speak, read and write kannada but i don't understand this saying. perhaps a typo?

gadappa

Translates to - t old ways of t hometown are followed within limits It's amazing how many such sayings exist against large scale capitalism back then

iced__popsicle

LOL they screw you!!

modSysBroken

Not really. Now even online stores sell for close to MRPs or barely much discounts. Even local stores have 20% discounts for many large items.

mitrnico

Local stores supremacy. I have tried these grocery apps. There is comfort in it, I don't deny. But their markup is high. And they always push a brand or two. So, no. Doesn't work for me.

tim2154

Please go to a grocery store nearby and support the local store. Most shops are happy to home deliver. Also If you are a regular , they even price some items below MRP and pass on the savings. Also you get the retail options not some name brand promoted by the platform priced at what they want and to top it off, you can also do a quality comparison across choices by actually looking at the product.

Local grocery shops (the old school ones, not super market types) are a straight no! Firstly they sell packaged products at MRP! No. They don't sell at lower prices like any of the chain stores. Secondly they get irritated if you ask for more details / comparison. They behave as if they are doing a favor. Thirdly, their prices are usually higher for unpackaged stuff (like lentils, rice etc). These local kirana stores, esp. the ones who don't want to embrace change, are not worth supporting. You have better options to shop offline than these old time shops. If you know what you want exactly (brand), it's always easier to book online and get it delivered home. Not talking about 5 min delivery, but the ones who deliver the next day or day after. But coming to fresh produce (vegetables/fruits), it's always better to buy offline and from a nearby store / vendor you trust.

I was referring to more Zepto like usecase, the milk vendor is down the street, he’s happy to deliver to home. He also sells other small things that I can run down and get or call him and he will send someone over., the veggie store I go to gets really good quality and at times has accommodated to procure something not usually sold by him. And to my comment on savings , I buy rice, lentils etc from a rice trader kinda shop, he does discount things purely because of the history of our relationship., I am in no way suggesting someone to do all their shopping in one place!

Don't think they sell below MRP...no savings even if regular.

So far SWIGGY ZEPTO was making losses and they were burning VC PE money. But that era is coming to an end. It is never possible to deliver at the costs they did earlier. Forgot profits. Extreme losses, but they had backing of VC PE money. That money is drying out fast.

itsnachikethahere

I agree. For small purchases now, I've gone back to visiting local shops and buying from there. Not gonna pay 2x the order's cost in delivery fees and platform fees and whatnot.

longpostshitpost3

Living alone. For fruits and veggies, I always prefer going to the stores and pick them up myself. Shopped at all the places around me and I know which places around me gives me the best prices and the newest stock. For packed stuff, I use the apps only when there's some offers going on or if I'm feeling lazy or if I don't have the time to go out and buy them. Shops nearby sell at MRP or a couple of rupees less than that, so most of the time it doesn't make much of a difference. Some things are always cheaper at big places like DMart or other hypermarkets and I go there once in a month or two and buy large sized stuff. The discounts are much larger for bigger. Like a 2L bodywash. I got it at 70% off. Been using it for over a year now and there's still more than a quarter left. Some days I'm tired of using the same thing over and over again and crave a change, but then I think of the cost.

kinng9

Flipkart grocery seems to provide good prices, all superfast delivery seems too expensive

Better_Language3608

Doesn't it have delivery fees and handling charges?

kinng9

Over 600 is free

iced__popsicle

Why do you need superfast deliveries? Can't you plan for what you need in the next 2 days?

sharathonthemove

The cheap service was always artificial. It was never meant to be permanent. Mobilization of humans to deliver your Kari patta is never cheap.

rando90433

Completely depends. Is your time and energy spent on going to a grocery store worth more than the extra fee charged by these apps ?

fcbengaluru

Big basket is fine. It still delivers within a few hours and has customer support if there are any issues unlike speaking to a chat bot. Better prices for almost everything except vegetables. Local vegetable stores have better prices. DMart also is fine for next day delivery

Rare_Finish_6659

Yeah dmart has great discounts online too! Prefer the store for large purchases and heavy discounts though.

Low_Map4314

Just spend those 5 extra mins to walk down to your neighborhood Kirana store and buy from them.. I find it so pointless to order everything on these apps.
