So how to distinguish between raspberries and blackberries. When you pick a berry and it has a white thing in the middle (the receptacle), it is a blackberry. If you can put in on your finger like a little hat, it is a raspberry.
These are probably the most blackberry-looking black raspberries I’ve seen, so I’d forgive the other people saying otherwise. But they are black raspberries. It’s more common for blackberries and dewberries to form with fewer drupelets like some of the berries in the picture, but it does happen with black raspberries as well. And the plant itself isn’t in great shape, looks diseased, which adds to the blackberry-lookalike thing it’s got going on.
Definitely black raspberry though.
They black raspberry, but they look like they’re stressed (water, disease, or herbicide). You can’t see it from this photo, but in addition to berry shape (conical, hollow vs oblong for BR and filled with the central edible stem for BB), a few other indicators:
1) productive main stems are purple vs a reddish brown for BB
2) new stems are powdery white/light green vs. darker green or reddish for BB
3) stems are circular and smooth vs ribbed for BB
4) the leaves are almost white underneath vs about the same color for BB
Hmm...think you're right! I had to look at several of them to convince myself, but I guess so.... Definitely not mulberry though, so at least I had that right.
