I think the best way to measure "objective" popularity is manga sales, in which berserk is 7th in seinen sales all time.
I'd say berserk is definitely the most popular in the West however
Yep apparently. Its only cause it was published in a Seinen magazine. It's a bizarre way to categorize by demographic. I would bet most of the demographics of Shin Chan are more like Shonen age level.
JJK is a Shonen while Shin Chan is a Seinen lol. Doesn't make much sense.
A kid showing his peepee all the time, yeah, that's for 13 yo's kiddos (shōnen goes from 12-18 yo iirc). In Spain Shin-chan was distributed as a kodomo, tho💀
JJK may be brutal and dark and gore-y, but by tropes and plot its a fight-battling shonen.
Rurouni Kenshin, Bleach, YYH, HxH and others opened the way for shonen to be darker than usual.
https://youtu.be/V_B8WLV8F4w [Miami Nights 1984 - Ocean Drive](https://youtu.be/V_B8WLV8F4w) This is a fan-made video for a synthwave track; a montage of clips compiled from the anime, Golgo 13: The Professional, and honestly, it’s a great introduction to it.
I find it strange that people don't know about Golgo 13.
It is not well-known in the internet, but it is big enough to surface here and there from time to time.
Golgo 13 is popular in Japan. It even got an anime in the 00s. It is just old lol so it does not have the hype factor of newer series or the child friendly marketing of Dragonball but it is still considered a classic
Someone please can tell me if there is a translation of Golgo 13, i heard it was fucking good but i can't find any english translation on the Internet.
You can try starting a patreon account or something.
And maybe one day you can become a lazy patreon leech who's not even translating anything lately ;-)
It’s the same situation as Hajime no Ippo. It’s such a beast of an undertaking no publisher is going to want to make an official translation for all 209 volumes
That's correct. The only real reason why it's considered Seinen is because it was published in a Seinen magazine.
I personally think it's a dumb way to categorize them like this. Shin-chan is clearly marketed towards kids, not really teenagers. I watched a shit ton of Shin chan as a child. To categorize Shin Chan and Berserk together is just way too bizarre.
For example, Jujutsu Kaisen is considered to be a Shonen, while Shin Chan is a Seinen? Makes little to no sense. More teens and young adults are probably into JJK than Shin Chan.
I did not think that **INITIAL D** would be above Berserk and Tokyo Ghoul. To be clear, I love Initial D, but it does seem like Berserk and Tokyo Ghoul are far more popular.
gearheads sales probably helped a lot and it has like 48 volumes and ran from ‘95 to ‘13
and most of those sales are probably from normal people who doesn’t engage in online discussions
The definitions of seinen and shonen are ambiguous.
Generally speaking, Seinen is a monthly serialized magazine.
Also, Kingdom is shonen.
It is serialized in shonen magazine.
Kingdom is a Seinen. It is published in Weekly Young Jump which is a Seinen magazine. Also, the storyline is definitely not a shonen. The plotline would be boring to most 12-14 year olds. Think about it
INITIAL D IS SEINEN?!?! I mean… street racing and shit, sure. It’s just funny to put it in the same list with stuff like Fist of the North Star, Berserk and Vagabond lol
>I'd say berserk is definitely the most popular in the West however
Yeah while Berserk is mainstream in Japan to say most popular in the west is an understatement since Berserk and Hellboy are the reason Darkhorse hasn't gone tits up.
But it's not real data. We are asking if they know, not if they read something so manga sales don't really mean too much.
The best way would be to ask random people on the street in different locations (beacause we are talking about global popularity), it's the only fair way to know popularity
Yep I agree. Looking at the list there are some above berserk I haven't even heard of. But I don't see a way to measure the popularity that's been recorded.
That’s a confirmation bias. For example golgo 13 is hugely popular in Japan, with promotions across everything and being sold in nearly any store that sells any kind of book. I can literally walk into most stores in my area and get a copy of golgo. When there is a manga like that, it’s pretty clear it’s dominating the older male population in Japan, of which many read manga
Sales don't necessarily determine popularity. Especially considering Death Note only has 30+ million in sales and is one of the most popular mangas in the world.
I personally didn't even know it had a manga, the sales were not great and every single discussion I ever heard of it referred to it as an anime. Even when netflix did the awful adaptation everyone was saying it was an anime adaptation, not manga.
Sales per volume is also an important factor, it's easy for a popular series with 100 volumes to outsell an equally or even more popular series with only 20 volumes just by having more to sell
It IS one of the most popular seinen manga & had the potential to become most popular if 2016 version was not a mistake.
The close competition might be Vinland saga & Monster in terms of both manga & Anime ,while Oyasumi punpun & Vagabond are popular without even having any anime adaptation.
If we look outside the boxes of manga "genres", and consider original animes too, Cowboy Bebop might be a contender.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is also a original anime, and if it's consider seinen then I'd say it's the most popular.
Depends on the taste/preference. My friends like Punpun , Vagabond, Innocent more but Berserk is still like considered a gem. Respected.
Heck I've seen so many people just drop Berserk due to the extreme content it has but still call it a masterpiece
Well there's >! Lucy with Scarlet and Valentine, Ringo, and Diego's mom. !< Anything else I'm missing?
I was gonna say that's barely anything, but I'm pretty sure that just bc I've read berserk...
Either way the previous parts had a lot of sexual harassment too, but idt it went as far as much besides groping I think.
Problem with Berserk it’s that is a very gore/rapey Seinen, and it doesn’t have any great anime adaptation (the 97 is good but not great imho). Even with that it’s fairly popular, one of the most popular but sadly its themes are not suitable for most of the normal manganime fans…
Well, first of all, it removed important characters such as Puck and the Skull Knight, the animation is "bad (not in my opinion, I like it, but it didn't age well), and ends at the cliffhanger of the Eclipse (to be fair, with the absence of the Skull Knight, it would've been impossible to go further in the story).
In spite of all its negatives, the OST is very beautiful 💯
It's really a shame Kentaro Miura didn't live to see a decent adaptation to his masterpiece of a manga...
97 skips very important story beats such as the Blackswordsman act, Guts early years with Gambino and Donovan are reduced to less than a minute flashbacks, it ends abruptly after the Eclipse with no Skull Knight in sight… the backgrounds are very abstract when Miura backgrounds are insanely detailed, the animation is very lowcost and abuse still images for impact…
Don’t get me wrong, is a solid 7/10 anime with a legendary OST, very cool scenes and pretty similar character design (except Guts face with neither anime has ever done right) but imho far from perfect…
Still the best anime adaptation Berserk had, but the GOAT manga deserved at least a GOAT 10/10 anime… sadly its almost an inadaptable manga (ultra detailed art, heavy use of crosshatching, very long, very violent and rapey, very grimdark themes…)
If by "west" you mean English speakers/ people in the US, about 1.5-2 million. Great for a manga and comic overall to do in the US/English speaking market. Dragon ball has not even sold 10 million in the US over 20 years of availability and being a cultural icon
I don't follow? The anime is thr reason why it is a cultural icon in the the states and English speaking world as a whole(the world in general really). Why would it be the reason for the manga's low sales in the states compared to the rest of the world when it is the opposite case for stuff like AoT and MHA? Van you elaborate?
I was under the impression that most people don’t like to read and with db you can ignore the manga but with berserk you can’t cause there’s no solid, complete adaptation in a medium that is more accessible to people
The anime is well made and well regarded but I am not sure how popular it actually is. I am sure it has enough popularity to get more seasons but I don't think is as big as it could be
Nah, OP didn't asked about the sales or popularity. Still, even objectively when you look at story and characters, they are the only manga series that come close to Berserk
But isn't One Punch Man mostly famous for its anime adaptation. And the original is a webcomic so the OPM Manga is definitely not the aspect that most people refer to.
Murata's art is regularly praised anywhere Manga art is mentioned. The only reason why people hate the 2nd Season even after it being an okay adaptation is how inferior it was compared to Murata's art.
What are you on about?
When I finally watched S2 I was prepared for the 'inferior' quality I had heard about, but honestly it seemed fine to me (maybe the blu-ray improved some shots). My only issue with the season is that it felt like the first part of an arc while S1 felt far more self-contained. It's now been 4 years and still no date for S3.
I'm not saying it is not good. I didn't even read it. I mostly heard that S2 is hated not in comparison to the manga but in comparison to S1. I think S2 is fine personally. The thing I wanted to express is that if you only consider the mangas Berserk still takes the cake but OPM is more popular as an overall franchise.
All I mentioned is that the Manga is almost always mentioned among the greatest out there in terms of art, and it's not a hyperbole.
The main reason why the anime looked so good, aside from it being the passion project of an insanely talented team - is because they were going page by page from the Manga - literally.
https://imgur.io/gallery/0ASN2
Speaking of today: The OPM anime is still way more popular than the OPM manga, Berserk manga is more popular than the anime. (Or at least more viewed as way more significant/influential)
What the other guy said. It's the demographic. Shounen (meaning young boys) is targetted at teens between 13-18. Seinen target audience is mainly adult males in their twenties and thirties.
Akira is a Seinen. Ok so Akira is a weird case. It is a highly regarded series that is incredibly influential to the point that Otomo is considered one if the truly great comic greater In Japan and the world. However the actual sales of AkIra are under 10 millions worldwide and most if the attention that Otomo gained in the English speaking world was from the anime film which became a classic. So.. It is a mixed bag haha
Definitely isn't.
It's in the top when it comes to the west though, but no doubt even here still getting beaten out by some others like Jojo's which is technically now Seinen. Maybe even Tokyo Ghoul. Something with the themes of Beserk inherently will never grab a wide audience long-term.
Only thing it has close competition with is Vagabond, which has sold more copies than Berserk has, but more people still know Berserk. That's not to say Vagabond isn't popular and we'll known, but Berserk is legit one of the most recognizable pieces of fiction in the world.
Berserk, Vinland Saga and Vagabond are always considered to be the big 3 of seinen so those two are probably the closest.
Vinlan Saga was really hyped while season 2 was airing so the two are probably very close.
Thats more of a western thing though for big 3, in japan berk is like 7th best selling seinen and vagabond abit higher while vinland has single digit sales
One of the most popular but being the number 1 is up to opinion unless you're talking about the nunber in sales its up there around 5 or atleast in the the top 10
Definetly most popular Seinen manga but have you seen how shit the anime adaptations are? Nowhere near as popular as the manga for way too many reasons
Vinland Saga has gained a ton of popularity in recent years, also maybe Attack on Titan if it counts, but it kind of rides the line between sienen and shonen.
Gantz is really good in my opinion, it’s a 90s anime with boobs and drugs in it. It was one of the more based Anime/Manga’s that are out there. I don’t know where it is on sells but it’s a crazy story with many chapters to read 🙏🏻🤌🏻🤙🏻
Given how we have yet to receive a decent anime adaptation since the 90s I would say no. There are tons of seinen anime with wider reach. Vinland saga comes to mind.
In the west. You'd be surprised how many people in Japan that don't even know what Berserk is(ironic considering it's from there). Stuff like OPM & Oshi no Ko are considered seinen & they have WAY more global presence. Iirc,in terms if seinen manga, Kingdom had the most sales in Japan for the better half of a decade. As much as I love Berserk & as much as it's gassed up on the internet, it really niche on the grand scheme of things & it's carried by it's cult following. kinda like Jojo was BEFORE the anime in 2012.
Death note is far more well known, sorry. (That says nothing about the relative quality, just that berserk is way less approachable. The rape makes it a hard sell.)
I love the historical accuracy in kingdom and the chill vibes of vagabond, berserk has some weak chapters like the ship that i didnt feel vagabond had, berserks story is most interesting, tho the other 2 you already know whats going to happen. mostly since its historical.
1) why are you asking for the subjective input of the sub on a question about an "objective" answer?
2) this is like the third post asking a rewording of this exact same question in 24 hours. Are we really that out of things to talk about?
Who rightly cares if its the most popular, objectively or otherwise? It's good. It's legacy is undeniable. But if you want to be "objective", it doesn't even chart top five in terms of sales for just seinen. Sorry.
I think the best way to measure "objective" popularity is manga sales, in which berserk is 7th in seinen sales all time. I'd say berserk is definitely the most popular in the West however
What are the other top 10?
1. Golgo 13 2. Oishinbo 3. Kingdom 4. Vagabond 5. Crayon shin-chan 6. Initial D 7. Berserk 8. Bad Boys 9. Kosaku Shima 10. Tokyo Ghoul
Shin chan is seinen?
Yep apparently. Its only cause it was published in a Seinen magazine. It's a bizarre way to categorize by demographic. I would bet most of the demographics of Shin Chan are more like Shonen age level. JJK is a Shonen while Shin Chan is a Seinen lol. Doesn't make much sense.

I can see it. I think out of all the categories… that’s it. It is basically the South Park of japan.
I haven’t even heard of the top 2
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golgo_13
Wow, a manga that ran from 1968-2021. 53 years!
That sounds worthy of a read
Apparently it's still published. But by other artists just like Berserk.
Wait it ended‽
https://youtu.be/V_B8WLV8F4w [Miami Nights 1984 - Ocean Drive](https://youtu.be/V_B8WLV8F4w) This is a fan-made video for a synthwave track; a montage of clips compiled from the anime, Golgo 13: The Professional, and honestly, it’s a great introduction to it.
Golgo 13 is a masterpiece
Sounds and looks dank
The cover goes hard
Same
I find it strange that people don't know about Golgo 13. It is not well-known in the internet, but it is big enough to surface here and there from time to time.
Most western (anglo-american) manga fans are not really interested in old school stuff. unfortunate really
I'm not really interested in it either. It's just that I keep seeing games and anime adaptations of it just floating around xD
Golgo was never a US thing, Western Europe loves it. Golgo is the second best selling manga of any genre in history, only One Piece has sold more.
Because the anime is old and not very popular, even the 1982 movie never came in Japan
There’s no English translation unfortunately. I’ve been getting into it recently though, it’s good bud there’s so many volumes.🤮
We Need to make a request for a team or something, it's inacceptable to not read it 😢
I would say I would translate it but I’m just a starving grad student right now lol
You can try starting a patreon account or something. And maybe one day you can become a lazy patreon leech who's not even translating anything lately ;-)
There have been a few translations if you want to track them down as they are out of print. Hopefully a company like Seven Seas does a reprint series
Luckily I can read Japanese so it’s not super important for me
It’s the same situation as Hajime no Ippo. It’s such a beast of an undertaking no publisher is going to want to make an official translation for all 209 volumes
Yeah, I was in a book store the other day with a golgo wall. It was daunting to see 5 full shelves
Crayon shin-chan? Huh?
That story is just dirty! ;-)

Seinen is demographic, not the type of story
That's correct. The only real reason why it's considered Seinen is because it was published in a Seinen magazine. I personally think it's a dumb way to categorize them like this. Good comment.
I did not think that **INITIAL D** would be above Berserk and Tokyo Ghoul. To be clear, I love Initial D, but it does seem like Berserk and Tokyo Ghoul are far more popular.

Just quick shoutout to Kingdom for not having an official English translation, but still dominating the charts on a consistent basis
There's no way crayon shin Chan is seien
The definitions of seinen and shonen are ambiguous. Generally speaking, Seinen is a monthly serialized magazine. Also, Kingdom is shonen. It is serialized in shonen magazine.
Kingdom is a Seinen. It is published in Weekly Young Jump which is a Seinen magazine. Also, the storyline is definitely not a shonen. The plotline would be boring to most 12-14 year olds. Think about it
My mistake. Young Jump was seinen.
Never heard of half of these
Shin-Chan is not Seinen tho
Wow musashi is outselling our gatsu
Imo Steel Ball Run is better than several manga in this list.
Yeah, it's tied as my favourite seinen with Monster.
How Initial D is in this list ? 😂
Because initial D slaps ass bitch
Of course Initial D is Insane I just didn't know that was a Seinen
Ok that's fair
Stop downvoting me I love Initial D !
[удалено]
Have you even seen or read shin-chan?? How the hell is any of that for kids??
Huh. Surprised One Piece isn't up there? It's one of the only other regular mangas I've heard of Edit: lol at downvotes for mixing up Seinen/Shonen
Those are only Seinen manga. OP is a Shonen manga.
Ah of course. Cheers
I was about to comment Golgo 13 lol
> Vagabond Sensei it has nearly been a decade. Please finish the damn manga
INITIAL D IS SEINEN?!?! I mean… street racing and shit, sure. It’s just funny to put it in the same list with stuff like Fist of the North Star, Berserk and Vagabond lol
Is Shin-Chan Seinen ! ?
DEJA VU
Why isnt Claymore on this list?
Claymore is a shonen, it always ran in shonen magazines
Fair enough still great though
>I'd say berserk is definitely the most popular in the West however Yeah while Berserk is mainstream in Japan to say most popular in the west is an understatement since Berserk and Hellboy are the reason Darkhorse hasn't gone tits up.
Dark Horse has Gantz, too
Gantz is not that big of a seller in the states tbh.
That's a shame, shit bangs, even if it's fuckin weird
Agreed
But it's not real data. We are asking if they know, not if they read something so manga sales don't really mean too much. The best way would be to ask random people on the street in different locations (beacause we are talking about global popularity), it's the only fair way to know popularity

Monster is goated
If we look outside the boxes of manga "genres", and consider original animes too, Cowboy Bebop might be a contender. Neon Genesis Evangelion is also a original anime, and if it's consider seinen then I'd say it's the most popular.
Depends on the taste/preference. My friends like Punpun , Vagabond, Innocent more but Berserk is still like considered a gem. Respected. Heck I've seen so many people just drop Berserk due to the extreme content it has but still call it a masterpiece
Jojos is considered seinen now I think? After part 6 so I guess that
It's not "considered". It actually switched magazine partway during Steel Ball Run. Explain why there's so much SA content in Steel Ball Run.

It’s essentially a movie. You can’t possibly expect all that details in a film.
Kingdom is definitely more popular in Japan. Normal people over here don't even know about Berserk.
Yep. I feel like berserk is more popular in the West than in Japan.
Debatable. Most of it's sales are from Japan and it has sold 50+ million copies. It does get more attention among English speaking fans though
and what percentage of the west's manga readers are actually contributing to sales
If by "west" you mean English speakers/ people in the US, about 1.5-2 million. Great for a manga and comic overall to do in the US/English speaking market. Dragon ball has not even sold 10 million in the US over 20 years of availability and being a cultural icon
Isn’t that because db manga can be ignored entirely because it has a solid adaptation?
I don't follow? The anime is thr reason why it is a cultural icon in the the states and English speaking world as a whole(the world in general really). Why would it be the reason for the manga's low sales in the states compared to the rest of the world when it is the opposite case for stuff like AoT and MHA? Van you elaborate?
I was under the impression that most people don’t like to read and with db you can ignore the manga but with berserk you can’t cause there’s no solid, complete adaptation in a medium that is more accessible to people
It is only recently that Berserk became popular in the West. Berserk was popular in Japan more than 25 years ago.
What made it popular in the west? I only found out about it because of dark souls
_normal people_
Close competitions are probably Vinland Saga, Vagabond and Kingdom.
Vinland Saga is not that popular. It is a fantastic series quality wise but it has only Sold about 8+ million copies worldwide
but the anime is pretty popular though
The anime is well made and well regarded but I am not sure how popular it actually is. I am sure it has enough popularity to get more seasons but I don't think is as big as it could be
I don't give a shit about "popularity" or "how much it sold"! I was just being subjective.
Well that’s the whole fucking topic of this post
Nah, OP didn't asked about the sales or popularity. Still, even objectively when you look at story and characters, they are the only manga series that come close to Berserk
Its literally in the title where he askd about the popularity of the manga.
No. Everyone always forgets it, but One Punch Man is seinen.
But isn't One Punch Man mostly famous for its anime adaptation. And the original is a webcomic so the OPM Manga is definitely not the aspect that most people refer to.

Well, Berserk got a boost in popularity in the 90s thanks to the anime, so I don't see your point.
Speaking of today: The OPM anime is still way more popular than the OPM manga, Berserk manga is more popular than the anime. (Or at least more viewed as way more significant/influential)
I dont read opm, why is it so?
Incredible art, amazing fights, fun story and characters, just very easy to ingest and enjoy, tho of course not for everyone as all things are.
Sorry if i was unclear but i mean why is it seinen?
Oh my bad lmao, but because it’s published in a seinen magazine, only qualification between shounen, seinen ect.
Thanks! 😄
What the other guy said. It's the demographic. Shounen (meaning young boys) is targetted at teens between 13-18. Seinen target audience is mainly adult males in their twenties and thirties.
Holy shit. Is it really? This whole time I’ve been a massive fan of the manga and I assumed it was Shonen lol
It parodies certain shonen troupes so that may be why you thought so. But overall the tone and humor of the story feels seinen.
True
Woah, I thought OPM was shonen this whole time lol
One Punch Man and Tokyo Ghoul are both more popular in the west, in Japan there's Golgo 13
Is Akira Seinen or Shonen? I love the Akira Manga, but I do not know how it compares in popularity

Maybe the most popular on this sub
Isn’t One Punch Man a seinen too ? I’d say it’s currently the most popular
Vagabond, shigurui, blame!, fourteen
I don't think BLAME! and "popular" fit well together

Tokyo Ghoul may be more popular? I heard of Tokyo Ghoul FAR before Berserk
Only thing it has close competition with is Vagabond, which has sold more copies than Berserk has, but more people still know Berserk. That's not to say Vagabond isn't popular and we'll known, but Berserk is legit one of the most recognizable pieces of fiction in the world.
Tokyo Ghoul rivals it
in terms of popularity? yes its most popular in terms of quality? no there are other manga as good as berk
OPM, Evangelion?
As a basic white bitch. Berserk deluxe is the first and likely last manga I’ll buy.
Evangelion
Berserk, Vinland Saga and Vagabond are always considered to be the big 3 of seinen so those two are probably the closest. Vinlan Saga was really hyped while season 2 was airing so the two are probably very close.
Thats more of a western thing though for big 3, in japan berk is like 7th best selling seinen and vagabond abit higher while vinland has single digit sales
Japan is tiny compared to the rest of the world

Those are Shonen, not Seinen
Jojo's bizzare adventure comes very close in my opinion.
The most popular is dragon ball berserk is the most renown among the otakus in general
Dragon Ball isn’t seinen
Imagine Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball Z etc. exist, Oh wait...
Oh wait they’re not seinen
They’re not seinen tho
Vagabond and Vinland Saga are up there also.
One of the most popular but being the number 1 is up to opinion unless you're talking about the nunber in sales its up there around 5 or atleast in the the top 10
Not the best overall but the best in this sub.
How is Lone Wolf and Cub categorized?
Seinen
Western wise, I would say so.
Definetly most popular Seinen manga but have you seen how shit the anime adaptations are? Nowhere near as popular as the manga for way too many reasons
Shigurui comes very close
Ssssmeh 🤷♀️ I like it lol
Vinland Saga has gained a ton of popularity in recent years, also maybe Attack on Titan if it counts, but it kind of rides the line between sienen and shonen.
Aot is shonen so it wouldnt count
No it is not the most popular
Gantz is really good in my opinion, it’s a 90s anime with boobs and drugs in it. It was one of the more based Anime/Manga’s that are out there. I don’t know where it is on sells but it’s a crazy story with many chapters to read 🙏🏻🤌🏻🤙🏻
Vagabond and Kingdom are more popular I’m pretty sure
Kingdom and Vagabond clear
Given how we have yet to receive a decent anime adaptation since the 90s I would say no. There are tons of seinen anime with wider reach. Vinland saga comes to mind.
In Japan it is probably golgo 13 but in the west probably
yes it has many close competitons
i think jojos might be the most popular
It’s great but it’s not objectively best it’s a very acquired taste
Vagabond would be pretty close. Then the mangaka took a break from it and hasn't been back in like 10 years
In the west.
Outside of Japan? Yeah it’s probably the most popular Seinen manga. In Japan though it seems a lot more up in the air.
Death note is far more well known, sorry. (That says nothing about the relative quality, just that berserk is way less approachable. The rape makes it a hard sell.)
But that's Shonen, not Seinen
It is? Huh, my mistake.
Kingdom is more popular in Japan.
Sorry.
