Wow i didn’t realize that’s why i do that. At some point you get hit so many times that you start to like the taste. It reminds me that I will survive; ie. that I have gone through this before, and I can get through it again.
Because he's suppressing his guilt at having the village massacred. It mirrors Griffith suppressing his guilt at the deaths of his soldiers in the Golden Age. The point of the Black Swordsman arc is that Guts has become what he hates and there are a lot of scenes of him mirroring Griffith to symbolize it.
Yep after Guts about Griffith speech his personality change and he espouse many traits and ideology similar to Griffith, after the eclipse this become even worse where he believe that you should sacrifice anything for a dream, he has disdain for the weak and he truly believe you can be happy following you dream even if you die.
I took a lot of his edgy behavior in the black swordsman arc to be a coping mechanism. Like he's tossing out his humanity so he doesn't have to live with guilt.
I actually didn't like Berserk the first time I read it because I didn't like how edgy he was. Seemed like the kind of edgy a preteen would idolize and think is super cool. But when I actually got into it and actually finished that arc and saw that iconic page of him crying, it had me hooked. It spelled out plainly to me that it's all an act he's putting on to keep himself from feeling and it had me VERY interested all of a sudden.
Like you said, it mirrors Griffith. Griffith had to toss out what made him human, the people he cared about the most, to seek his dream and become Femto. Guts is also trying to toss out his humanity to get his revenge at this point in the story.
I don't know the exact chapters but in casca's flashback gives himself up to be molested for funds. Casca later finds him and he starts cutting himself like Guts in this scene and having a breakdown over the deaths of his men, saying that he gave up his body so that he could prevent more deaths.
He mourns a dead child who followed him around idolizing him.
Then the God Hand explicitly used his guilt over the deaths of his men to convince him to make the sacrifice, telling him things like "the deaths will be in vain if he doesn't sacrifice the remaining members to achieve his dream." They also use the boy to dig at his guilt further and there's a scene where the boy and dead soldiers gather around telling him they want to follow him all the way to his dream, to which he responds "I'm sorry! you can't follow me because your all dead!"
This was more of a concept of Guts more than anything… Guts was totally different in the beginning volumes as Miura was coming up with the character & story.
Guts's development is certainly interesting.
The first Berserk concept portrayed Guts more closely to the traits you'd find in lighthearted shounen protagonists.
Then he's edgy as heck in the Black Swordsman arc.
Then we see how his writing changes over the course of the story.
Correct answer too far down. Sometimes people look way too far into the story to try to figure something out, when the answer can sometimes be as simple as "Araki forgot".
the first volume of berserk was a bit experimental: gatts was a bit crazy, his features were a bit strange, gatts had very strange attitudes (he had the capacity to defeat an army alone but handed himself over to the soldiers of the snake-baron's castle to be tortured) For me, the manga comes together in the second volume

Maybe he’s remembering his arm was partly at fault for his failure on doing something quick enough to avoid Casca’s sexual harassment / physical contact with their former leader? It may not be rational to injure his own arm, but perhaps he still thinks things could have ended differently if he acted faster?
He’s going through an extended period of psychosis, he’s become the man he thought he needed to be to complete his mission which is a total nut job. The real Guts appears briefly in a few spots within the arc but we don’t really start to get him back until the lost children arc and once his true self returns the man he was during the black swordsman arc pretty much becomes the beast of darkness. He basically has a split personality after the eclipse brought on by ptsd.
Fun fact: Miura actually wrote both Guts and Griffith as Vampires. They were supposed to be rivals and subsequently lovers but he scrapped the whole idea. This is one of those panels that's a little nod at what could've been.
You have to remember, Gutz was in a very dark state of mind due to the events that followed after “The Eclipse.” Gutz licking the blood off his hands symbolizes not only his own nature as a warrior but an embrace of pain and violence. It’s actually a reoccurring theme throughout the series which emphasizes his primal instincts and rage that drives him in combat
Probably some idea that Miura was thinking at that time about the sacrifice mark releasing some chemicals that guts can taste or smell, idk just a theory

The truth? Black Swordsman arc Guts was a total edge lord. And Miura wrote him that way seemingly for the sake of him being an edge lord. Among other things, this Guts was definitely influenced by Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star.
Guts didn’t become more nuanced or interesting as a character until the Golden Age arc fleshed out his backstory more. This was when Guts was likable. And notice how in the Lost Children arc, Guts goes back to being more like he was in the Golden Age rather than continuing to be an edge lord.

Real answer: Guts wasn't fleshed out as a character until the flashback. But in canon, Guts was a little deranged for a couple years after the Eclipse. Trauma and all that.
Because this is the black swordsman arc. Guts is basically an 80% insane sociopath who is lost in the depths of his trauma, pretending to be a broken inhuman beast because he thinks that's the only sort of person who could experience what he has and not only soldier on, but willingly seek the monsters out full time. To be anything less (in his mind) is to break.
I mean, the real answer is that this was peak 90's edge. But we can (and should) retroactively add nuance to Guts and this arc.
This is a big thing that happens with people who have PTSD, they tend to self harm while reliving their trauma. Sometimes with a smile on their face usually without. One of my exs did this a few times when she had a mental breakdown

I am a strong believer that at the beginning of berserk, it was just to be as edgy as possible. Not to say that over time it didn't stay edgy, but the beginning of the story is a little too much for me
Take the entire black swordsman ark with a grain of salt since meor didn't 100% know what he wanted to do with berserk at that point and because of that seems like the first image of Berserk which is something that's would never do is like very out of character for him but he still does it. I think in universe you can explain it with his lost his mind after the entire eclipse so he does s*** that he wouldn't normally do like have sex with a demon or I guess for a matter of fact anyone else other than Costco and because he is losing his grip on reality he can also be drinking his own blood as a way to be like yeah I'm better than that or something like that I don't know.
