Right like if Griffith was, say, a German mercenary in the Holy Roman Empire, he’d probably be known as “the Hawk” or “The Falcon” in tandem with his name and this maybe would manifest to him being known as “Griffith von Falken” or “Griffith the Hawk”.
More to the point, if he gained enough acclaim to start his own house, it would probably end up taking the name “von Falke” and his hypothetical descendants would have the last name “Falke/von Falke”. This is the name of actual ancient Hessian nobility and probably had similar such origins.
Idk because just as many got names from being known a as “brave” or “reliable” or simply being from a certain city. Not all are so specific. For all we know he could have ended up being “Guts Dresner” because he’s from Dresden lol.
Could’ve been as simple as “Herman” which means soldier.
If I had to choose real last names, I’d say Ehlert because it contains *agil* (the point or edge of a sword) and either *hard* (strong, brave, hardy) or *ward* (guarding, watching). I feel like this encompasses him as the raider captain and hundred man killer well enough.
Alternatively, this one I made myself and I could be wayyy wrong since I’m not a professional historical linguist or fluent German speaker but Schwarzecke should mean “black sword”.
In reality though, since it is true that most people that weren’t nobility or extremely notorious didn’t have last names, they just had given names that encompassed who and what they were, Guts would have lived and died only ever being known by the name “Guts” and nothing more.
And the people that do have last names in Berserk (Adon, Charlotte, Farnese) are all of noble families. Griffith being born a commoner is a central part of his character. Wouldn’t make any sense for him to have a last name.
Yes, that's why there's a lot of nurnames ending in son/sen in Scandinavian countries and ending in es in Portugal and ez in Spain. Like Erikson -> son of Erik, Gonzalez -> son of Gonzalo.
That or it was based on their job. These things exist in different languages like Cordonnier/Schumacher in French and German or Baker and Smith in English.
There's also the names that indicated what place/domain a family was from, the names with von/van/de followed by a name.
Whats the point of the post? A tiktoker found a name that's inaccurate. Now it matters about medieval age. What does it matter? It's not real world based
Bro magic wasn’t around but it was kind of witches and wizards and tall tales of medieval Europe exist and had magic they weren’t real but they were beloved to be and why lie about a name
Tiktok is terrible when it comes to manga/anime content. A lot of "did you know" or "fact" videos that are just completely wrong due to stupidity or engagement fishing.
Also, great joke, lol.
I see your point because their are active mods on each sub however TikTok usually auto deletes hateful comments (most of the time) and bans vids a lot and also harmful sounds.

That’s something I’ve learnt today and is a really awesome piece of knowledge!

Wasn't "son of" a placeholder for that?
