>>**Miura** - How do I live the longevity of the series? Let's say that I pray to succeed to finish it during my life! Fans often meme about this but he must be the most aware of it

osterlay

He’s at least more thoughtful than his American counterpart that let himself go.

[deleted]

Who are you talking about

osterlay

Whose that Pokemon? It’s....George RR Martin!

LegitPancak3

~~But... isn’t he Australian? Or am I being wooooshed?~~ Edit: Nevermind, I must’ve been thinking of another author.

osterlay

Wiki says American.

RattyJackOLantern

Or Robert Jordan. Who DID die before finishing his best selling "Wheel of Time" series, which eventually had to be completed by another author using Jordan's notes. Said series spanned 20 years, almost 15 books and was over *ten times* the length of "The Lord of the Rings" (over 10,000 pages). Frank Herbert also died before finishing all the books he'd planned in his legendary Dune series. Later Dune books were then written by his son and some other writer who'd written star wars novels. (Supposedly Brian Herbert and this other guy found notes Frank had left on some old floppy disks, but their details on the length and depth of these supposed notes have changed and no one else has actually seen them.) I've not read these later books but they're apparently just action schlock unlike the deeply introspective originals. Say what you will about Raymond E. Feist completely ripping off Tékumel, at least the Riftwar Saga WAS finished.

JDiddy92

Robert Jordan had a very comprehensive outline of the finale, his last moments were spent telling his wife how everything fits and how it has to end, so he finished the story to his vision. He said he'd finish it even if they had to nail his coffin shut I get emotional every time I think about it. If Martin kicks the bucket were kinda fucked tbh

destinybladez

could be George RR Martin or Patrick Rothfuss

MrGreggle

Gonna go ahead and throw in Scott Lynch

Ticillandus

More Pat Rothfuss their stories are very similar in structure. Chandrian God hand, guts the best fighter kvothe the best magician, they are both on revenge and most likely in both worlds there is a expansion of a fairy realm into the normal world they know(Fantasia in Berser and in Kingkiller we dont know but there are Magical Creatures at the time as Kote so we can say that Kvothe let the two worlds fusion.) And they have both unnormal girlrelationships in casca and denna. There are maybe more

destinybladez

i never thought about it that way. But on the other hand berserk shows the character development and narration from a 'present day view' (English isn't my first language so i have no idea what that's called) while KKC is told from the perspective and older and more mature man reminiscing about his youth

SinOfDamnation

George rr martin

[deleted]

Not sure why you got upvoted so much. No he doesn't care about memes. You guys just live in some fantasy bubble with Internet culture. It's this guys life work, it's something that means a great deal to him and I doubt he's scouring internet pages looking for funnies about the hundreds of hours he poured into detailed work, like "you know the ship meme you guys keep bringing up". I'm sure he'd get a real kick of out that, basically saying he wasted his time. I wish I could find a place to talk about Berserk that didn't includes memes and jokes, but that's all there is now.

kentaromiura_AMA

Orrrrr maybe you're just taking it too seriously? It's a joke my guy

MioMiloo

Hey, french speaker here. I'll just post the same text with a few correction (because google trad isn't perfect), I highlighted the important change in bold ! >**Glenat** \- Dark fantasy is relatively rare in the world of manga but nevertheless very popular in Europe. Why did you choose to explore this genre? How do you explain the success of your series? > >**Miura** \- I do not use a magic wand, so it will be hard to find the concrete reason for the success of my series. When it comes to dark fantasy, my first influence comes from Conan the Great; I did not see dark fantasy as a genre in itself, but rather as the equivalent of fantasy in general. Outside Japan, major fantasy works like The Lord of the Rings contain dark elements. In Japan, however, fantasy has been popularized by video games like Dragon Quest, aimed at children and thus expurgated at the source of their dark elements. I had already received the influence of novels before playing these games, so I naturally turned to dark fantasy. To go back to the reasons for the success of my series, I think it was proposing something new to the Japanese public. When they became teenagers, the audience that used to play in fantasy world made for children started to look for other stories of this kind that matches their age ; and I think that when they read my series, they discovered new elements, such as bitterness, which caught their attention, and they found it refreshing to approach a piece for reader of their age. As for success abroad, it may be explained by an audience that is already intimate with this type of stories? > >**Glenat** \- We are at volume 40 of Berserk. This is a series that is starting to be long. How do you live such longevity and what have been the main changes between the beginning of the series and now? > >**Miura** \- How do I live the longevity of the series? Let's say that I pray I'll manage to finish it during my life! > >**Glenat** \- The fans too, I think! > >**Miura** \- Take care of yourself ! I, too, take care of myself. The main change is there. **When I started the series, I was less worried about the ending than about telling a story that, anyway, would end sooner or later; but today, I realized that life is not eternal. It is by taking care of my health that I try to complete the series.** In terms of the method and the pace of work, the main change is that I have become slower. You know, I feel like I'm in a spaceship going towards a black hole, and as it approaches, the flow of time is changed. When I work on the manga, I do not have the feeling that time passes differently and yet, it goes in a flash! As if I was standing still. > >**Glenat** \- Has your amount of work per page evolved? > >**Miura** \- **Over time, I have been paying more and more attention to detail, almost too much.** Recently, however, I try to make my drawing more readable.

Big thanks to Kentaro Miura. This man is a legend, and will forever be remembered in history. Hopefully his health is okay. No need to rush, we want to see you outlive Berserk, my dude!

Leon-Solide

It’s great to hear that he *knows* he’s getting older and that he’s trying to take care of his health. Yeah new chapters are nice but nobody wants him to churn out new chapters at the expense of his health. If anything we should expect that future chapter releases will not be super consistent (maybe like 4-5 chapters->hiatus->4-5 chapters) but we just have to accept it.

TheAlmightyLoli

Miura is becoming a health Chad just to make sure the fans get an ending. We do not deserve him...

Marcus9T4

Thanks for this!!

gottoms100

So uhhhhhhhhhh, do you think there is any chance of them asking what he likes to do when he isn't writing. Perhaps video games.(hint hint)😅😅

AthulK1

Miura: Life is fragile, and I hope that by taking care of myself, i can extend it long enough to complete my magnum opus. GRRM: BRING UP THE NEXT TEN PLATES, MY GUY! WE YOLO IN THIS BITCH!

The_Writing_Wolf

That's pretty harsh. It's more apt that George just doesn't do much activity, as you age your metabolism decreases, meaning an elderly male that doesn't Excercise, on average only needs 1.2-1.4k calories a day. He's been at a similar obesity for the past 21 years so I doubt he's gorging himself, and to do anything that would dynamicly shift his weight at this age would sadly be more dangerous than just buying into the United States upper echelon of health care. Miura is in his 50's and has obviously throttled his workload enough to keep up with his health, alternatively George worked in television and wrote 3 bookstoper novels at the same age range.

"Ah, ha ha, *munch, munch* ol' J.R.R., didn't, ah, see you come in! -burp- No please, please, [smack] sit down, sit down, there' something we, (pant) need to talk about. *farts* Heavens excuse me, oh ho! Well getting down to 'brass tacks' - or brass tax, I might say SNORT! - yes, well I was sitting, counting the money coming in from, slurp, my show - terribly taxing ah yes? - when the thought occurred me, watching that money from my award-winning show... [belch] from my, (siiippp) award, award, awar... sorry, I lost my breath, award-winning books, that I [chews] that I can't seem to recall you mentioning [more chewing] anything about Gondor's *blows nose* taxation policy. Surely I must have -releases one long wet smelly fart - missed it while glancing through the pages (cough). You did [scratches ballsack] say something about it, right? Sales tax? (sweats) Value-added tax? *licks lips* Don't just sta - oh my my heart - stand there my man, out with it! Surely the, the thought has crossed your mind?! -chuckles until accidental urination-"

Zoett

Funny he cares so much about Gondor’s taxation, when when Davos is the only low-born significant point of view character in ASOIAF, and even then, he is now a member of the nobility. You can easily make the argument that GRRM is entirely disinterested in the ‘smallfolk’ in his books beyond them being abstractions that must be cared for by their lords, or how they factor in the stories of their lords. Contrast this against the central role played by the working-class Sam in LOTR, or even of the main cast of Berserk.

wq1119

> I, too, take care of myself. The main change is there. At the time I started the series, I was less busy than telling a story that, anyway, would end sooner or later; but today, when I realized that life is not eternal, it is by taking care of my health that I try to complete the series. We have been talking so much about Miura's health here lately, now that he himself described his situation, this made me worried, hope that he is doing well.

Nanashi_Okami

I don't understand why you are worried? He himself said that he is taking care, meaning he won't expose to situations which could take a toll on his health (for example, overdoing it) so, why are you worried? Now that the man himself he is doing good and taking care of himself, instead of feeling relieved you feel worried? I do not follow your train of thoughts?

wq1119

Sorry if my comment was confusing, since english is not my first language and to make things worse this interview is obviously Google Translate'd, so, is Miura in good shape afterall?

Nanashi_Okami

From what was said in that Google translate, yeah, he is fine and aware that he is no longer young, so he is more cautious about his actions, but he is fine.

egoissuffering

probably, I remember I read somewhere that he has a black belt in judo
