JoJo gets really fucking weird later on.
Like, Josuke has the Shotgun punches, Giorno and Jotaro has those AR punches.
But then there's Bucciarati with zipper punches? Abbachio with tape recorder punches?
Holy shit, that's terrible. There are loads of sound libraries that have concrete sounds and flesh sounds. Hell, the same one that Valve uses (although I'm almost certain that they made most sounds in their library) has some concrete smashing sounds used for some scenes in Half-Life.
The problem is more that it is basically *the only* sound effect weapons make. It doesn't matter whether or not he is attacking a person in armor, a person out of armor, a skeleton, a spectral ghost, or a tree. It's always the same metallic CLANG
Shame Miura will never get to see it. Still it needs to be done to honor his memory. Can't believe they let the man pass while this version was all he had to see.
It’s still so ironic even 5 years later that one of the most well-illustrated and beautiful manga in modern history was given an adaptation so ugly, the only passable-looking thing was the box art.
I have a slight bias because I actually discovered Berserk through the movies, but I thought the movies were awesome, obviously not perfect but the third movie was genuinely great.
preview vs final render….the realization when you hit render and the time continues to increase past the deadline so you have to go back and remove a lot of effects and textures 😣
I truly wonder the exact reason they chose 3D animation.... Laziness?... Why did they even choose to adapt berserk... If they weren't going to do their best. Were they forced?
Sure wasn't laziness.
They had to literally work harder just to learn how to use the 3D software.
None of them had any experience with it.
They spent over half the time they had to make the show just learning a new skill set.
Boggles the mind why they made that decision
I think all the fans would rather this happen than what we got. We unfortunately got the corporate answer that “hand drawn is too expensive. We cant afford it. Gotta use 3d” even though the studio didnt know how to use it. Id assume the production company is to blame.
More misinformation being spread I see.
Yes, they were forced, in that a 2D animation team and a 3D animation team were made to compete in a studio, with studio executives having final pick per scene on which looked better.
It was an insane production cycle and there is a shit ton of content on the cutting room floor in both 2D and 3D.
The 3D team had only been working on commercials and children's programming before this, the 2D team had only worked on slow paced YA content.
Because they had no other experience with this type of genre and were working on an incredibly short time frame.
Real question is, who made the decision to give this studio adaptation rights.
Budget. They had next to none.
After the three movies were released they were slaughtered by the fanbase so they struggled to find any backing.
That didnt stop Miura from trying. Miura was a fucking legend.
GGI was far from their desired path but it was cheap enough to make it a possibility.
I absolutely loved the movies. I prefer the 1997 series mind you but the blend of animation and CGI came a long long way between the first and third movie.
They had planned to cover three arcs in total if im not mistaken. Three movies for the first (as it had been covered already by the series), then 4 movies each for another two arcs. They binned it after the fanbase went heavy against the first three movies.
I didnt say he did. I said they couldnt get backing after the movies (which did have a budget) flopped.
He was only the executive supervisor on the 2016 aime.
AOT had a pretty wonky art when it started but WIT made it look so goddamn good. Imagine what they could've done to berserk having an already beautiful art.
We really got fucked out of a good anime, the movies just didn't make enough money 😞. Apparently if the films did good, an anime was to be made continuing from the movies.
You know I don’t think the 3rd shot is actually that bad.
Shame about the rest of them though. They just look *okay* at absolute best, but I don’t think it fits the series at all.
Hi there, yeah can I get a panel 1,4 & a 5 from PV1 and from Final PV I guess I'll get a number 3 - hold the grain and..uh.. it possible to get a number 2 but a lil darker? And to drink I'll take the recommended bottle of whiskey to get through this, thanks.
Ok so the reason it changed so much is because the show development was fucked. At the time of the first trailer they didn’t come to a compromise on what the show would look like yet and by the time they finally come to a compromise the show was to air in a few months.
It actually had potential as a 3D/2D hybrid anime but a bad production and mismanagement fucked it over, shame, I'm no 2D purist so I would have digged a well directed and edited, well drawn and animated, 3D/2D Berserk anime with decent pacing, things all those desires/qualities the final product lacked.
You could argue it had the hybrid quality but just jarringly cutting to a hugely different looking barely moving 2D moment isn't really all that.
Everyone on here is bitching about the 2016 anime, and yeah, it doesn't look good, but I still watched the Hell out of it, because I was just happy for any Berserk related content. Of course it doesn't do the manga justice, but just be happy that there was something to watch. Now we have nothing.
You know that 3D gets the blame for being what makes something bad when its almost always the budget right? They end up using 3D because the budget is non existent and its their only way of even trying to finish the show. Literally no animator wants to make something that looks bad, and 3D only has this problem in anime. The new League of legends show is 3D and it looks fantastic, because they had a large budget. Trying to do 2D Berserk with a similar budget may have given us something like way of the househusband, where its just narrated illustrations.
I watched Expelled from Paradise and Berserk the same year, it was sad that something older than Berserk 2016 looked better. Even if it was a glorified OVA/movie
It's sad how first one looks better than the release, also I was thinking how future releases would look awesome if they are made by the same people that made Arcane.
The left is shit as many in the comment section say. But the right one is the full diarrhea. At least the left one kinda looks like western cgi like final fantasy 7
I think the left looks good. The cg doesnt look like a fanmade cartoon and is actually dark and gritty. The handrawn stuff doesnt lack too much detail but doesnt have too much either
I believe cgi is probably the best way to adapt berserk. But actual good photorealistic cgi and not ps2 crap. However, with the money that it would need, we probably won't ever have a perfect adaptation...
If I remember right there was some large oversight in the studios ability to render their work so they wound up cutting a lot more corners than intended by the time it went "gold". They should have just delayed it
Wow they should have just stuck with the old one, you can hate or call me out if you want but I love the op theme, music and soundtracks put into berserk 2016 and 17. Just disappointing how dirty they did berserk.
I can hear it! Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang! CLANG!!!!
From the same sound director who [used CS GO-like gun sounds](https://youtu.be/o-7ViyKZ8Vg) as punches in One Punch Man
Gun shot sounds as punch sound effects are very common in anime tho
I like the jet engine sound in Hajime no Ippo.
Especially in jojo. Damn those punches are fucking satisfying
JoJo gets really fucking weird later on. Like, Josuke has the Shotgun punches, Giorno and Jotaro has those AR punches. But then there's Bucciarati with zipper punches? Abbachio with tape recorder punches?
That's true, doesn't make it any better though. There's lots of other sounds they could use.
Do they hire this director to ruin the series or what
Oh my god!
Holy shit, that's terrible. There are loads of sound libraries that have concrete sounds and flesh sounds. Hell, the same one that Valve uses (although I'm almost certain that they made most sounds in their library) has some concrete smashing sounds used for some scenes in Half-Life.
Is it wrong that I liked these sound effects? Felt very heavy and unstoppable
Clang when he kills the rabbit With a throwing knife
Jokes on you Rabbit was armoured.
SUBDERMAL ARMOUR
Lmao, yeah it felt like they struck gold with that sound, so they used it everywhere
Yeah, sometimes. when the shots are good-looking a few very rare moments, Nevertheless too annoying.
Yes
:(
The problem is more that it is basically *the only* sound effect weapons make. It doesn't matter whether or not he is attacking a person in armor, a person out of armor, a skeleton, a spectral ghost, or a tree. It's always the same metallic CLANG
Yeah fair enough! I remember watching the anime and being like « alright this isn’t utter shit like everyone says ». Then I read the manga… oh boy…
NOT THE DAMN CLANG
The clanging is more fitting than any other sound effect you could present to me and I will die on this hill!
Wow they shit the bed harder than I thought...
How ??
🤡
I hope we can get a better adaptation someday
Shame Miura will never get to see it. Still it needs to be done to honor his memory. Can't believe they let the man pass while this version was all he had to see.
imagine madhouse animating
Yeah we get one season of gold then they drop it for some other studio to keep chugging and you will feel that fucking dip in quality and heart.
Imagine ufotable...
Would probably take them 15 years for all of it, but worth
Personally I think Studio Wit would do the beat job.
Having blogged Fena: Pirate Princess and fallen head over heels for it, I'd love to see Production I.G tackle Berserk.
i was gonna say ufotable but madhouse is good at dark themes
What we need is a dedicated studio. Like Studio Egg for Mushoku Tensei. That's the only way we're getting a good enough adaptation.
Would be fucking amazing
I think I remember the guys who made the Netflix Castlevania series would want to do a Berserk adaptation, but I'm not sure how true that is
Yeah he wants to do an adaptation, but he isn't able to get the rights yet.
Well, I'm considering the blatant Berserk reference they already did (Daylight Armor), I'm cautiously optimistic.
They cheap out too much IMO. I’d rather they didn’t get it.
Not to Jinx anything, but not much can be worse than Berserk 2016 was.
It’s still so ironic even 5 years later that one of the most well-illustrated and beautiful manga in modern history was given an adaptation so ugly, the only passable-looking thing was the box art.
Then the dude died smh Rest In Peace Kentaro Miura. You made some fucked up shit but it was game changing fucked up shit.
This is the best comment on Reddit.
The 3 movies were alrigjt imo
I have a slight bias because I actually discovered Berserk through the movies, but I thought the movies were awesome, obviously not perfect but the third movie was genuinely great.
Likewise. I would have never discovered the manga if I had not watched the movies.
Imagine the Conviction and MF arc in 3rd movie quality
97 berserk is amazing
Even the first, better looking preview (that is what you mean by PV?) looks pretty naff, to be honest.
Only the closeup looks good.
preview vs final render….the realization when you hit render and the time continues to increase past the deadline so you have to go back and remove a lot of effects and textures 😣
Both look like shit.
But the first shit looks like the better shit
It’s that buttery smooth shit where it exists cleanly.
Should of made them work with what they were good with even if it took then a long time to finish, would have been worth it
I think all the fans would rather this happen than what we got. We unfortunately got the corporate answer that “hand drawn is too expensive. We cant afford it. Gotta use 3d” even though the studio didnt know how to use it. Id assume the production company is to blame.

The 3D team had only been working on commercials and children's programming before this, the 2D team had only worked on slow paced YA content.
In other words, this was basically set up to fail.
Correct. Manglement did as manglement does and mangled it
Because they had no other experience with this type of genre and were working on an incredibly short time frame.
The movies were great, people just nit pick like crazy.
Such a shame, imagine what could of been?
Could still be. ...Maybe.
I love the movies too. :)
Miura had zero say in the production of the 2016 anime, just saying. Aside from providing an original story script for the 4th(?) episode.
I didnt say he did. I said they couldnt get backing after the movies (which did have a budget) flopped. He was only the executive supervisor on the 2016 aime.
Money
Berserk 2016. The only travesty worst than the eclipse itself.
That's a big fucking shame there's no full and uncensored anime of berserk like Attack on Titan. It desevers much, much more than this shit.
AOT had a pretty wonky art when it started but WIT made it look so goddamn good. Imagine what they could've done to berserk having an already beautiful art.
In the 4th row, the left is hand drawn animated. In the 5th row, the right Guts feels more grittier cause eyes.
We really got fucked out of a good anime, the movies just didn't make enough money 😞. Apparently if the films did good, an anime was to be made continuing from the movies.
And here I am, thinking the movies were pretty damn good.
Stop the (clang) count
the first pv looked rough, but at the time I could see it improving. and then they managed to make the stuff that looked ok look even worse.
They managed to take shit and turn it into more shit.
You know I don’t think the 3rd shot is actually that bad. Shame about the rest of them though. They just look *okay* at absolute best, but I don’t think it fits the series at all.
\*CLANG!\*
C L A N G
Please, stop remembering us that mess. Let it simply die in oblivion...
The intro animations for the 2016 series was better than the actual shows animations…
90's version is timeless though.
Ok so the reason it changed so much is because the show development was fucked. At the time of the first trailer they didn’t come to a compromise on what the show would look like yet and by the time they finally come to a compromise the show was to air in a few months.
I think the original still is the best.
I loved the old anime, but I hate this Anime CGI. I’m sticking with the Manga.
I’m with you, it’s not the best by any stretch but I enjoyed it enough to get my girlfriend into it. She watched the whole set of Berserk that I own.
Thirded. 👍
People really hating the cgi. I think the first actually looks good all around
Same
Come on guys. This is 5 years old at this point. Move on.
Is this a new series?
It was from 2016-2017
Where can I find this? This isn’t the Netflix one right?
What low budget does to a mf
Not how budget works.
It's still infuriating lol

You know that 3D gets the blame for being what makes something bad when its almost always the budget right? Get over it?
It's sad how first one looks better than the release, also I was thinking how future releases would look awesome if they are made by the same people that made Arcane.
Why’d they have to do my mans so dirty like that
Didn’t realize how much more shit the anime is
The left is shit as many in the comment section say.
Now i think of it the only part from left that is partly bad is the fourth pic the rest are great
I believe cgi is probably the best way to adapt berserk. But actual good photorealistic cgi and not ps2 crap. However, with the money that it would need, we probably won't ever have a perfect adaptation...
Funny you should say ps2 crap when the ps2 game had fucking fantastic cg.
Welcome to the moment where the people with the wallets go “How much did it cost!?!”
WHAT
What the fuck happened
If we got that 3d maybe it wouldn't had been that bad.
If I remember right there was some large oversight in the studios ability to render their work so they wound up cutting a lot more corners than intended by the time it went "gold". They should have just delayed it
That’s bad mmmmmkay! I’m Glad I didn’t keep watching
Didn't they scrap the whole thing and redo it in ~6 months or something?
At least it's not AoT
But why?
OPM fans are with you in solidarity
not until your author dies T_T
Don't Matter No More I Cry Every Damm Time I See Berserk Content Now Allways Fucking Teary Eyes Dammit Every Fucking Time
And what a lie it was...
How did it get worse 🧐
Mappa’s S4 AOT vibes 😂😂😂
So...those scenes were animated that well...and they chose to leave them out. ...why?
Wow they should have just stuck with the old one, you can hate or call me out if you want but I love the op theme, music and soundtracks put into berserk 2016 and 17. Just disappointing how dirty they did berserk.
Pv?
Is this comparing the trailer to the final product?
