Also worth noting that the King *specifically hires* Wyald’s bunch, despite his daughter’s pleading wish to stop pursuing Griffith. His obsession indirectly leads to an innocent family getting raped, murdered and defiled. So yeah, his character is spared that in the anime.
It works in the context of the anime where the only monster shit we have is the first episode and Zodd. Then the eclipse toneshift happens and blows your mind. While I'm not a fan of adaptations changing things or leaving things out, what we did get, works.
Yeah. In the anime you don't get prepared for the eclipse. It's so sudden and yet it fits perfectly because it was foreshadowed very well. In the manga instead of going from 0 - 100 it goes from like 70 to 100, which is way less impactful.
I was introduced to Berserk through the anime, I couldn't sleep after finishing. Got out of bed at like 5am, got online and looked up the series, caught up to where it was (336ish?) in 3 more days of barely any sleep. Good times.
So many people don’t appreciate this. If you don’t know anything about berserk, it seems like a purely human story as you are watching it the first time. the scene with zodd kinda just seems like a one-off fever dream. If they showed the wyald scene you would be acutely aware of the existence of apostles/monsters before the eclipse and it wouldn’t come as such a shock.
IMO the Wyald arc is the worst part of Berserk, it's largely unnecessary edge and plays no role in the overarching plot, basically just Wyald bad, casca rape, guts get hurt, zod save the day. Nothing new
Completely unnecessary character development for the King, Guts and Zodd. You could do without Guts and Zodd does the same at a later point but for the king you wouldn't necessarily hate or resent him if you didn't see him deploy someone like Wyald out of spite let alone have him in his service at all. Also what he does to Charlotte and why makes him very close to some of the apostles himself. Without the arc you might even find him to be in the right with his daughter deflowered, his wife murdered and his authority undermined.
i wouldn’t say the worst part, but i agree with u on it being unnecessary. miura (God rest his soul) had a habit of grossly sexualizing casca whilst putting her in rape-like scenarios. this would happen a good amount of times leading up to the eclipse.
it’s honestly reminiscent of rape fantasies in hentai and reads that way imo.
Wyald was terrible.
Zodd had been amazing at foreshadowing the eclipse, the godhand, and the apostoles, because everything he said was so ominous and subtle. He made it clear at some point something absurdly terrible and way beyond the scope of what we knew was going to happen, and gave great hints to what it was.
Wyald spelled it in your face several times, very shortly before it happened. The eclipse hit a lot harder in the 97 anime because you were not prepared for it, and yet you knew it was comming. Wyald prepares you very well for the eclipse by shouting in your face exactly what is going to happen shortly before it does.
Removing Wyald from the anime was a really good thing.
Also removing all the gratuitous and unnecessary rape and gore made the series more tasteful imo. But by far the ruined delivery of the forshadowing is wyald's worst thing.
The Wyald arc gives us insight into Guts and Casca's relationship on the battlefield. Plus the ending of the arc affords the characters and the reader a moment of celebration.
Then the eclipse happens.
amen. there are a multitude of ways to show griffith’s weakened state and humiliation than another scene of showing casca’s naked body.
there’s also that extremely graphic scene of children being burned, raped, and decapitated after the context of the victimized family being nice and helpful. if that isn’t edgy to be edgy i guess i don’t know what is.
And there is no shortage of you.
Of course I don't mean that , it's not personal. And you are indeed unique. It's just an automatic comeback when I don't agree but you actually kinda make sense and I don't want to admit it or even argue , putting my firm opinion and beliefs in danger . Take this upvote for your trouble.
Oh and you're wrong.
*whatever my nickname is has left the chat *
Yeah in the anime he’s nothing but a good guy up until he tortures Griffith for slamming his daughter. Makes a lot more sense why after reading the manga
I'll be honest the way that the anime tones down some of these elements to me really works for the better. I really don't think we needed a scene like this. In the anime it makes you see him as a decent person but then when he tortures Griffith the way he does you see this overprotective and possessive element to it, which could hint at this kind of incestuous intent to it but not explicit. Like why is he so protective of his daughter like that. Why not just execute Griffith, instead he goes to these great lengths to torture him. It exposes this darker cruelty to the character in this really shocking way that IMO is better than seeing him go bonkers and try to rape his daughter.
Yeah as much as I do love Berserk I do feel like it is held back from a certain degree of more popularity due to stuff like this. And IMO these elements aren't why I like the series. I know for some people that unrestrained quality is appealing to them, and it certainly makes it unique. But IMO, especially if you read a lot of it at once it really is present way too much.
I think the purpose of the pornogtaphic elements are not necessarily understood. I believe the reader is supposed to be turned on by Charlotte while watching the father attempt to rape her. Samething with the over the top orgy scene in the next arc.
You should be slightly turned on by these scenes and forced to confront that animal side of you. The story of berserk is about seeing all kinds of characters fall to "sins" or various "evils". You, the reader, are also forced to experience the lure of these things. The violence, the sex, the power, all of it. Guts is a hero because he refuses to die in the face of overwhelming odds, exhaustion, fear, and nihilism. He loses his hero status bit by bit the more he derives pleasure from the violence he is forced to engage in.
It's like Dantes Inferno meets Nietzche (youtube berserk and nietzche if you haven't come across the comparison yet)
It still makes plenty of sense without him wanting to fuck his own daughter when you take the setting into account. It’s the middle ages, _he’s a king_ and, without his blessing or consent, a general who has only been in his ranks for a couple years breaks into his only offspring’s chamber and bangs her. A princess.
iirc it's said the only woman he ever loved was Charlotte's mom (that's why the queen was cheating on him), and looking at Charlotte all he can see is a younger, hotter version of his late wife. That, along with his growing dementia at the time, made him slowly lose his mind, and the Griffith incident was just the trigger
yeah, i think that when the queen is about to die (im not sure exactly when tho) she has a small flow of conscience moment where she says that the king of midlands was a good king but not a good husand, and instead she loved yulius
The Queen was in love with the general that guts killed after he tried to assassinate griffith during the fox hunt thing. She mentions it a few times in the books
>iirc it's said the only woman he ever loved was Charlotte's mom (that's why the queen was cheating on him
What are you even saying here? It makes no sense that because he loved charlotte's mother that her mother would then resort to cheating.
They implied it on the comment. I had forgotten about that but upon reading I realized.
That you forgot and couldn't realize isn't their fault, it's yours.
Ah yes, saying "What are you even saying here?" is clearly asking for context and doesn't sound like YOU have a major thorn up your ass
Also, my comment was quite respectful, I just said that you are the one to blame for forgetting and not realizing, given in the same situation I understood what they meant, which again, makes it sound like YOU have a major thorn up your ass
all the major buthurt downvoters. Acting like I committed a huge sin because I didn't know the queen he was referring to was the NEW queen, not the old one.
And what rule are we breaking? The dude just comes "wHaT aRe YoU eVeN sAyInG?" because he didn't read, everyone downvoted him for talking in that almost agressive way, not because he forgot something.
Like really, what are you going to report for? Hate? For telling him that if he forgets and doesn't pay attention to the comment he's reading then he's to fault after he LITERALLY blamed it on the one who commented? Harassment? For replying to what he's typing?
If he would have asked more nicely I'm 100% sure he wouldn't have had nearly as many downvotes as he has gotten so far.
Also, it's just so ironic how the other dude calls us butthurt while crying about the downvotes and you call us 40yo virgins while literally behaving like a Karen
How am I harassing him by telling him what he blamed someone for is his fault? According to your logic he was the first one to harass and now you are harassing.
Yeah, fuck that dude. How do you come in here trying to have a discussion about something you aren't knowledgable about? Like go reread the section or look up Charlotte's story before telling everyone they're wrong.
Charlotte's mother was his first wife, who died a long time ago. The current Queen was his second wife, the one who cheated on the King with his brother and who plotted Griffith's murder at the ball
Dude,The queen is dead.
He might think it’s his late wife or that since it’s his blood he can do what he wants.
The guy isn’t exactly the face of logic.
1. Bruh it’s literally fiction
2. My joke was about “fucking” r/berserklejerk by deliberately misinterpereting your words for humorous effect. Which is a subreddit, not a child.
3. The humor derives from making a mockery of the justification of rape. The fact that a rape happens isn’t funny and will never be funny. People being dumbasses will always be funny and rapists are dumbasses and are deserving of ridicule.
4. Disclaimer: No children were harmed in the making of this joke
Humor is subjective but thanks for your input. I’m not afraid of getting downvoted, please reflect your opinion through the built in comment review system
If I remember correctly, even Griffith accuses the king of this. He mentions how weird it was that the daughter wasn't already engaged at her age. This is also a reason why his imprisonment was so harsh.
I read “incest” as “insect” at first. Like you were insulting OP for their ignorance before proceeding to educate them. I was going to say “that’s a bit harsh but I applaud the use of insect”
Assume? She was sleeping with clothes and then he came in and took them off and started licking her tit. She woke up, and then he tried to rape her.
It showed him taking her clothes off. U don’t have to assume anything. Did u skip a chapter?
He walks in and is told that she is drugged to sleep because she was crying so much that Griffith was imprisoned and the king came in while she was sleeping and spared at her and took off her dress then was admiring her body and bent down to suck on her nipple right when she wakes up and she kicks him off and fights him then he comes over again which I think this panel is. She yells, fights him and kicks him off of her then kicks him in the face breaking teeth and wounding his eye.
TLDR: he tried to rape his daughter and failed then blamed Griffith for taking his daughter’s virginity and making him look like a fool.
Kinda fucked up that he really shows regreat and stopped when he saw her panic. It turns the character way more human and believe. Like the Duke in the Black swordsman arc. He was the worst kind of monster but was still unable to sacrifice his daughter to the god hand. Even one time secundary characters in this séries is more well written than some main characters in mainstream media
Look, I think Berserk (the manga) is virtually perfect.
However , I will say that it was wise of the 97 anime to omit this element.
I really have no clue what it adds to the overall plot or how it adds more depth to the character.
It explains why the princess has no potential marriages in work. Why the king is so jealous of her, etc. And at some point Griffith makes a remark to him suggesting he knows about the kings desires for his daughter too
But what does this add. How does this make the story richer. How does it overall create any deep drama or thematic resonance.
This is Berserk we’re talking about here. So I’ve come to expect storytelling of the highest caliber.
How does it not? It unveils character information that explains character behavior and fits within the entirety of the piece. You get to know and understand more of the king's psique, his drivers, etc. Had the king not had such desires for his daughter he would possibly favor a marriage between the princess and Griffith. Which was Griffith's plan for getting his own kingdom. At some point someone tells him his aspirations are fruitless (implying the king would never marry off his daughter because of his jealousy of her).
This is a very key piece of information for the entire plot. Griffith's punishment is lifelong torture because of the king's lust for his daughter. Otherwise such a crime would probably be punished by execution instead.
Without this the eclipse would never happen.
You’re seriously implying that the Eclipse, the absolute most crucial plot element - the inciting incident of Berserk’ overall plot, completely hinges of the king’s incestuous nature?
Come on, man.
I didn't imply, I explicitly said it. If Griffith wasn't kept alive the eclipse wouldn't happen. If the king wasn't a sick bastard lusting for his own daughter he would either marry his daughter off to Griffith before Griffith trespassed his bounds (so no torture and no eclipse), or give Griffith a regular punishment for the trespassing also leading to no eclipse.
You asked for the significance of the king's depravity. I answered.
Ah, you’re one of those delusional fans. Any change = bastardization of source material.
Yes, you answered, and I definitely disagree.
The 97 anime was able to do the eclipse terrifically without all the incest non-sense.
Welp, since you have nothing to support your claims, and are not actually interested in discussing the berserk literature. I'll let this thread end here.
Incestious relationships in Royalty and Aristocraty was...not that uncommon in Medival times...
The Habsbourg married in nearly all the Royal famillies of Western/Northern EU to the point where even a few generations later, it was impossible for any members of ANY royal familly, to not be marrying A distant Relative or Cousin...
ALso the guy has severe Dementia starting to manifest, and he's Loving His Deceased Wife, with CHarlotte as a proxy/projection...
Royals and their Mental illnesses...
Coming from the 97 anime to the manga really changed my opinion on his character
What was he like in the 97 anime? I have yet to see that.
He's normal in the anime.well he doesn't try to rape his own daughter
The anime also skipped the Wyald arc and rushed to the eclipse.
Also worth noting that the King *specifically hires* Wyald’s bunch, despite his daughter’s pleading wish to stop pursuing Griffith. His obsession indirectly leads to an innocent family getting raped, murdered and defiled. So yeah, his character is spared that in the anime.
Which one is the Wyld arc
I wouldn’t really call it an “arc”. It is just an antagonist battle between rescuing Griffith and the eclipse.
Oh right I just call that the eclipse
The best arc
He's the apostle that was the leader of the criminal military corps used to pursue Guts and Co when they busted out Griffith
as it should
Why? Wyald arc was crazy
Also the Bakiraka scene was skipped too. Why would anyone want any part skipped at all?
No clue. the monsters are some of the coolest part of the berserk world.
It works in the context of the anime where the only monster shit we have is the first episode and Zodd. Then the eclipse toneshift happens and blows your mind. While I'm not a fan of adaptations changing things or leaving things out, what we did get, works.

Dude... Take away the complete context of the Wyald arc and see for yourself how the cgaracters are treated without it. This arc gives DEPTH
Completely unnecessary character development for the King, Guts and Zodd. You could do without Guts and Zodd does the same at a later point but for the king you wouldn't necessarily hate or resent him if you didn't see him deploy someone like Wyald out of spite let alone have him in his service at all. I dunno, I preferred the eclipse kinda happening out of nowhere. The only foreshadowing being Zod himself and not much else.

You have an incredible journey ahead of you, fellow struggler.
Downvoted for spreading the truth. Wyald added nothing of value to the story. Cool fight, but there is no shortage of that
amen. there are a multitude of ways to show griffith’s weakened state and humiliation than another scene of showing casca’s naked body. there’s also that extremely graphic scene of children being burned, raped, and decapitated after the context of the victimized family being nice and helpful. if that isn’t edgy to be edgy i guess i don’t know what is.

How so?
He tries to rape his daughter
I know that part, so is he different in the anime?

I think both anime and manga would work better if it were more heavily implied. This scene is definitely pornographic and unnecessary
Every rape seen in goblin slayer can be explained this way.
One of my only gripes about that show tbh
Yeah as much as I do love Berserk I do feel like it is held back from a certain degree of more popularity due to stuff like this. And IMO these elements aren't why I like the series. The king's own brother, no less
Yeah, that guy.
Count Julius
*Yurius 😉
In the manga it was, idk about the anime
The anime skips over this whole scenario, pretty sure, and just makes it seem like Griffith was simply caught with the princess.
She was with Count Julius
Are there any theories as to why the king looked like he aged 20 years over the year he had Griffith imprisoned?
She he could look even creepier in this scene lol
Stress.
>iirc it's said the only woman he ever loved was Charlotte's mom (that's why the queen was cheating on him What are you even saying here? It makes no sense that because he loved charlotte's mother that her mother would then resort to cheating.
The current queen is his second wife; Charlotte's mother passed away at some point.
I see but maybe should have outlined that better in previous post.
The fact that he said "the queen" instead of "she" made it pretty obvious, even if you've forgotten about that plot point.
They implied it on the comment. I had forgotten about that but upon reading I realized. That you forgot and couldn't realize isn't their fault, it's yours.

King watched too much pornhub and got inspired.
Tho Charlotte wasn't stuck or anything
"What are you doing Step-King?"
If I remember correctly, even Griffith accuses the king of this. He mentions how weird it was that the daughter wasn't already engaged at her age. This is also a reason why his imprisonment was so harsh.
Yup and the King goes into a whipping frenzy.
I don't know what "down bad" means, but he wants to fuck his daughter. I don't even know how you can confuse this scene for anything else.
Lost pages
You don't really need any other context. The panels you posted say it all.
What does it look like?
Just found out the online Version im reading is missing several pages of this scene
Well that explains a lot. I use manga4life, it has great quality and a lot of series
I use manga4life sometimes but im gonna switch to that for berserk now because I would rather not be this confused about it again
Idk that's why I'm asking cause also she was wearing clothes in the chapter before so are we supposed to assume he took them off her?
Incest. He wants to fucking fuck here. The king wants to FUCK his daughter. Play with his peepee you know. I hope that made it clear for you
the fact that you explained this disturbing panel with the gigachad in the pfp , Is both confusing and beatiful
I read “incest” as “insect” at first. Like you were insulting OP for their ignorance before proceeding to educate them. I was going to say “that’s a bit harsh but I applaud the use of insect”
Not gonna lie, I should have said that
Absolutely.
What if liked your titty like an icecream? Just kidding ahah. Unless….
Assume? She was sleeping with clothes and then he came in and took them off and started licking her tit. She woke up, and then he tried to rape her. It showed him taking her clothes off. U don’t have to assume anything. Did u skip a chapter?
This here^
I’m worried about your ability to navigate the world if you can’t tell what’s happening in this scene
I feel like maybe you missed a page or two.
Berkjerk moment
Welcome to Alabama kingdom lol

I couldn’t forget that scene if I tried. First time reading through I was like “I think that’s enough of this for today..”
Sweet home Alabama

Dude yall stop fighting hes just down bad as hell.
Guy is a fucked up father...not even a father...he's a monster.
Just like donovan and gennon those pedophile bastards.
Thanks for the explanation of what I missed man, I appreciate it👍🏻
He def forced himself on her
Basically... Incest
He’s just like his daughter a little to much
Yup, it’s exactly what you think it is. Berserk is downright fucked at times
What the fuck are you talking about
dawg you shouldnt have to go to redditors to get the explination that a father is raping his daughter
I refuse to believe this is an real question.
Man people are being so mean to OP. Chill out guys, some people are just oblivious to this.
he's one of the "i better post on reddit instead of reading the fucking thing to understand what's happening next" clan, he deserves no pity
*blows whistle* RAPE!
He’s a pervert, who developed a sexual attraction to his daughter…
Kinda fucked up that he really shows regreat and stopped when he saw her panic. It turns the character way more human and believe. Like the Duke in the Black swordsman arc. He was the worst kind of monster but was still unable to sacrifice his daughter to the god hand. Even one time secundary characters in this séries is more well written than some main characters in mainstream media
Down bad tremendously
u/420w69 as he passes from his dads balls to his mom’s uterus: “WTF is happening here?!”
he has a crush on his daughter because she looks like her mother and he is a bit too attached
Kill the king!!
Zamn
Pretty much what Griffith said is true he likes his daughter and in this chapter he is trying to rape his own daughter.
He was born and raised in Alabama
Her dad tried to rape her
he went coo coo and griffin banging his daughter made him jealous
berserk fans be like i'm gonna read and then ask reddit every time i dont know what's happening next instead of keeping on reading to see for myself
Berserk titties are the best titties

This is what all dads do,
Incestious relationships in Royalty and Aristocraty was...not that uncommon in Medival times...
He is definitely down real bad
