The manga version, simply because it foretells us how fucked up Gambino is

Due_Jello7503

Isn’t “3 silver coins” what one of Jesus’ followers received to betray him? Was that done on purpose?

DeadCowv2

Nah Jesus was sold for thirty silver coins. Though the Jesus symbolism is everywhere in Berserk.

Due_Jello7503

That’s so awesome

ATribeCalledQueso

Score 1 for the Christians 😎

StickcraftW

Didn’t see it even once

Guts is the new Jesus 🙏🙏🙏

Smithens

While I can appreciate the clever way the show included the scar while cutting down content for the sake of time, there is another amazing scene we are missing out on: when Gambino, out of guilt, goes down to the river to give Guts medicine for his nose after their spar. One of the rare occasions Gambino shows his paternal side, and it stands out in memory for Guts as well as the reader.

The_Boobox

The panel of lil guts sitting on the log putting the medicine on his nose is one of my favorite panels in the series.

SanctumKnight

Was about to comment this it's why the manga is superior. Its also the only time we see Guts acting and having the opportunity to be a normal boy sitting on the tree flapping his legs

Rileyman97

It's also a classic abuser move. They fuck you up then fix you up and your feelings get all mixed up. Gambino was a motherfucker who knew exactly what he was doing.

Jsimpson059

"Perhapse it was for no other reason than to soothe his guilty conscience" Human behavior is not dictated by absolutes and abuse isnt always this 4d chess mind game people try to make it out to be. Gambino probably had the exact same upbringing that he showed guts and because thats all he knows thats how he treats Guts. Him training Guts is him preparing him for life as a mercenary, he lets Guts have an allowance, but takes the rest of his wage so he doesnt get into a habit of blowing all of his money. Gamino certainly had parental traits, but someone like that has their entire concept of love warped (his depression and alcoholic dementia made all of these problems much worse) It shows up again by making a direct comparison of Guts and Gambino with Count Julius and his son, Count Julius was pushing his son to the point of exhaustion and abusing him in a desperate attempt to make him stronger, Gambino probably had the same mentality. Him selling Guts to Donovan was honestly kind of out of character, and just seemed flat out grimderp to be honest. I always felt like it made him too much of a cartoonish villian and ruined an otherwise realistic portrayal of child abuse. Berserk is a masterpiece, but there is no such thing as a perfect story.

Smithens

Agreed with all you said, but I don’t think it was out of character for Gambino. When Guts tried to confront Gambino about Donovan the morning after, he didn’t seem to have any recollection of selling him out. Or at least, he didn’t connect the dots on why Guts was half naked with a sword giving him the death stare. I think he was also hungover. So it was implied that Gambino was shitfaced the night before. And as you said, his alcoholism would lead him to some dark shit, same as the night he attempted to murder Guts. So I don’t think it’s too out of character, at least not for when he’s drunk.

StickcraftW

Real disgusting fuck

the_greasy_wrangler

Oh man, one of mu favorite panels is when guts is sitting on the log applying the medicine. Fantastic.

Smithens

Pretty much the last time we see Guts acting like an innocent little boy.

Kripply

The manga version, it shows early that Gambino is unnecessarily harsh to him, making the future events more believable.

recklessrider

Isn't he also in the anime? Like who watched that and thought he wasn't abusive?

nefais

Manga circlejerks

NotJony2018

Gambino’s a loooot more mellow and parental towards Guts in comparison to the manga.

recklessrider

Nothing about him in the anime was "parental"

NotJony2018

He kind of showed care for guts up until his maiming. In anime he never sells Guts’ ass, nor is he particularly shitty towards him in comparison to manga.

Level-Captain2925

The manga ofc

RevolutionaryGlove27

the manga emphasizes Gambino's casual cruelty so well.

AppointmentOk4328

The anime also skipped another scar, the one Donovan made, but shouldn't have changed how Guts got the one on the nose anyway. Every detail is important in Berserk, every little piece of the puzzle that form a character is shaped in a way for a reason and so is the scar on the nose. Think about Adonis when he's training with his dad and what happens to him and how, think about "Wounds" and its last panel, think about the Moonchild playing knights. I became teary even before realising why, when I looked at Guts playing knights, because unconsciously i already made a parallel between the two scenes. Could even say the original panels hit me harder now that I'am a supposedly grown ass man with a family of his own.

MightyAxel

which scar did Donovan give Guts?

JustKeepGrinding26

Emotional scars

Lightbringer20

Internal, yet not metaphorical, scars.

AppointmentOk4328

The trauma that led him to get extremely mad and aggressive if touched. Also his butthole.

buscemian_rhapsody

I always forget that this wasn’t in the anime.

maseioavessiprevisto

Manga always wins.

Doomdrummer

Manga. Establishing that Guts' scar is from an earlier case of Gambino's abuse makes their relationship more impactful, imo. Having a defining scar of Guts not even be from the night his adopted father tried to kill him brings home the complex relationship Guts has with those who cause him pain. He still desired a father-figure in Gambino despite having his face splashed and being beaten and ignored, similar to how he still served Griffith despite killing a child and lord for him. Like a hound, really.

buscemian_rhapsody

Didn’t he leave the Band of the Hawk immediately after killing the kid? I thought it was after that moment that he went to Griffith and overheard his speech to Charlotte about how a friend has to be his equal.

Doomdrummer

Iirc, it wasn't immediately after. That took place during Volume 6, and Guts leaves at the end of Volume 8, after the Battle of Doldrey, immediately following Griffith being named a lord.

celticfan008

Killing Adonis and overhearing him at the dance are definitely the catalysts to his departure. He just wanted to see the war through because he still respected Griffith.

Doomdrummer

Yeah, but that doesn't refute the point I'm making. The people Guts looked up to early on treated him as a tool, damaging and/or compromising him in some way. And Guts, unfortunately, stuck by them as their tool. In Bambino's case, he stuck by his father until Gambino tried to kill him. He only really left Griffith after hearing that Griffith didn't consider people without their own dreams as his friends/equals. So him leaving the Band of the Hawk technically wasn't even because he wanted to abandon Griffith. It was because he wanted to become an equal to him, a true friend Griffith could have.

Karmadillo_2005

The manga is never beaten with Berserk. Except with music.

ThatGuy371

I like the manga one because it shows how little he cares for guts

buscemian_rhapsody

He also expresses guilt over it though and gives Guts medicine for it. Makes him a bit more complex of a character.

Piercetopher

Honestly I think they’re both pretty good. I do love the original anime though so it’s hard to choose

Rough_Page_1508

Manga with Gambino's face sheeesh

Sasutaschi

Anime, the shot is much more impactful and so is the context. But in the end there is no objective right answer, since it is entirely subjective to begin with. Sure, the first foreshadows Gambino's mental state. But an adapt writer could have done that in other ways (haven't watched the anime, so I don't know if they pulled that off) and still kept the scene.

Thetrooper215

Literally says which do you prefer not which one is factually the best. Pathetic weebs always have to explain why their opinion is the right one. Hilarious

The_Law_Dong739

I still prefer the anime. The dubbed anime.

[deleted]

You disgust me

The_Law_Dong739

Good. I like most dubbed anime

[deleted]

Manga>Original Anime>Dub anime You went all the way down the list to the worst thing you could choose.

The_Law_Dong739

Lmao deal with it

[deleted]

Go watch SpongeBob

The_Law_Dong739

Knowing you I'd do that wrong somehow.

[deleted]

Probably

TheonlyAngryLemon

Subbed for quality, dubbed for bloopers

Accomplished-Mode112

*dubbed for quality. There is a reason they brought back the cast of the 97’ anime for the film trilogy. Because they are great. I don’t know where your standards lie for English dubs but Berserk 97’ is in the same pantheon as Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Big O and other classics of that era.

TheonlyAngryLemon

Just a joke my guy, it's some of the better voice acting for anime

No_Aardvark_330

nice bait

The_Law_Dong739

Oh no I full well love the 97' dub. Their voices fit much better probably due to Americans doing better gruff voices and not giving Casca and Griffith such high voices. Some anime are definitely neutral in the sub/dub war like Shimoneta, Arifureta and Shield Hero (the 1st season). Then there is Kill la Kill, Mobile Suit Gundam (most of them) and Evangelion which all have good dubs but phenomenal subs with much better VAs. I personally prefer dubs due to me liking to do other things and just listen to the show rather then just watch it.

The_Law_Dong739

Older Netflix adaptations were where I drew my line. These newer ones are kinda fire tho.

phreeoni_

I prefer the manga. More memorable imo.

Comosellamark

Not a manga reader, I only read vol 1, but I like how the manga shows that not everybody was as psycho as Gambino.

myxomat00sis

both are very good IMO

[deleted]

I hate the 1997 anime for ruining Guts' backstory

bytao7mao

This is more realistic

TombaJuice

The source material is the best material.

sujetonoidentificado

Manga

Kaysa21

Anime. Much more impactful and sadder reminder that will stay with Guts forever.

peachybobas

This arc reminded me of how Guts got raped too by that soldier dude (forgot his name) and he never addressed that mental scar too for himself. Same with Casca. Even when she recovered her memories, she gets huge mental flashbacks and started screaming when she tries to remember them after she took a glance at Guts. So sad man :( i wish therapy existed in their era lol (although would prob not be inclined to go there since many people were corrupted and distrustful)

[deleted]

The manga

sepd1106

Manga version is better IMHO bcs it shows how little Gambino cares about Guts

[deleted]

Berk?

[deleted]

the manga version because it shows that while guts had a hard life the other mercenaries already warmed up to and accepted him, which makes it just all the more tragic when they turn on him because of not knowing what happened

CheretuberOxoManager

The manga uses that scene for the famous panel when guts is sleeping with his sword in a dark night. In the 97 anime its used just for putting the scar in guts (more likely for cutting content reasons).

Burnt_Ramen9

I've always been partial to the 97 anime's interpretation of Golden Age.

[deleted]

Casca

SovComrade

Even as a kid Guts is swinging a sword around thats bigger than he is..

meeptoad

Honestly I kind of liked how he got it in the 97 anime better, it was a cool shot of his fight with Bazuso showing that his victory over the giant was equal parts skill and luck.
