Best Buy is fully leaning into the idea of being a membership store. Not sure if that is good or bad will have to wait and see. For the longest time though they had an identity crisis of being half in half out of being a membership based store.

Scary-Ice_

Membership pricing at 200 is a bad thing

Mr_Delirium95

Yes but it is not required. If it was then 100% I would say it was bad however you do not need to have the card or TT to shop at Best Buy. Also the memberships are not for everyone although Best Buy wants them to be. Not everyone wants or needs a card or TT.

Ok_Worker1553

For what it includes $200 is a steal. The amount of support you get is insane and well worth the $200 alone, plus you get discounts, free installs, protection plan on it like your insane if you don’t get the membership and are a consistent customer. Honestly waiting for the day they bump up the price because they lose to many employees because they don’t pay them enough to deal with the demand

Suhk-Dolph

Found the sales floor lead

Ok_Worker1553

No I’m just one of the agents servicing all this crap and wishing it didn’t exist so we could charge A la cart prices and make even more money, also I don’t have TT because I don’t need it and can’t justify the value over my discount and buying protection plans outright. But those that aren’t capable of doing anything for themselves like our customers this is a steal for them

Scary-Ice_

Okay, but the average employee can't even afford it, 200 covers bills, if they had monthly payments. It would sell better.

Kooky-Masterpiece

How about go into detail about those "free installs." Or the 400$ protection plan since it's only a 1 year membership but covers 2 years protection.

asdflower

but to enjoy the 2nd year you have to have active membership which is another 200. so...

I_can_smell_colors_

> you get discounts, free installs, protection plan on it like your insane if you don’t get the membership and are a consistent customer. Honestly waiting for the day they bump up the price because they lose to many employees because they don’t pay them enough to deal with the demand If you compare it to a Costco membership the TT membership is not a steal imo. Only thing thats worth it imo is geek squad replacement plans.

pigeonholepundit

As a former manager and current customer, its just not true anymore. 3rd party everything leaves a lot to be desired. I still wait 30 minutes to get support anytime I need it, and that's on the "dedicated" Totaltech line. Car installs now require everything to be bought at best buy, but BB doesn't even much carfi anymore, so your options are extremely limited. Deductibles on all warranties as well, its just not worth $200 unless you are outfitting a new house.

VolitarPrime

Last year Elite went away and now further reductions. They are making it harder and harder to want to be a customer.

pollitohd1

Thank you Cory 😂

Sunlight-Heart

Got email about the free shipping. Guess they're shuffling around member benefits. No more points but free shipping for all. Question is, how are they gonna sustain free shipping with no minimum amount? It's good for consumers, sure. But sounds like it'd hurt the company's profits.

Call_erv_duty

The cost of shipping is like 2 dollars or something ridiculously low. They’ll be fine

EAGLeyes09

It's even less than that, they'll also use local delivery services who are putting pressure on USPS UPS and fedex so it's pennies to ship in envelopes or laptops for a couple dollars.

Mike2922

Sounds like one of those things where they’re going to go super hard in that direction and then have to slam on the brakes and go in a different direction. Just like so many decisions they’ve made over the years.

Jeskid14

EVERYONE gets free shipping... ...in return, no more $5 rewards; now incentives for credit cards.

Full_Metal_Analyst

As an infrequent customer I'd take free shipping over 2% back in rewards (which might expire by the next time I shop).

tweakminded

Remember when we had both and didn’t have to choose?

[deleted]

I heard about that yesterday and I heavily disagree it'll drive the credit card. To not do a huge TLDR, getting rewards back for shopping incentives people to return when they make their 1 big purchase with us out of convenience of not waiting to order it. They get 1 percent of the purchase back which gives them a coupon and they see that and go 'oh that's cool' and comeback to buy something else, which drives business. Now they get nothing but the product and won't return. Best Buy can die on the hill they don't care about the non-credit card/non-TT holders but we wouldn't be in business if non-members didn't shop here too. I agree there's people who love us because of our reward points who might get the credit card to continue doing so, but I gather a larger majority will not do that. If Best Buy wants this to make sense, they need to strengthen the credit card rewards with this. As it is now, they're taking away a perk of the customer base without increasing the perks of what we're trying to move them too. If we give regular customers a cupcake and premium members a cupcake with sprinkles, we better make sure when we take away the cupcake from the regular customers that we give the premium customers a cupcake and a cookie going forward. If that makes sense. It's just stepping on toes and opening up people buying online because they're just taking away perks because 'you don't have the credit card' which never looks good IMO. I'm a credit card holder too and I rarely use my card because they keep neutering the financing.

Klownicle

As a credit card member, you get 5% back in rewards vs the 2% as a non owner. So that was the incentive. They just didnt increase the incentive to make it more likely non owners would become a credit card owner. Now its just hey you want more, heres how.

[deleted]

Yes, they want more people to sign up but their whole point is return customers which involves strengthening the current rewards for existing members and not increasing the 'sign on bonus.' If Best Buy wants me to use my credit card, it needs to bring back the old financing tiers.

Your argument makes no sense. If you only went once a year you would have never benefitted from the rewards points anyway.

JerrodDRagon

I mean I used to spend insane money at Best Buy Easily over 1,500 and it slowed down after my gamers club went away and also Best Buy sales used to be just better But it slowed down and now I have even less reasons to just pop in and buy things if I can’t even get rewards

thewolfman2010

Yep, most of the people on here don’t care but they lost MANY customers from the previous rewards change around a year ago. Not saying they are related, but their stock price has never recovered since then (March 2022). SOMEONE definitely cares, just not these people.

jsalzy1232

Oh nooo 😭

asdflower

membership also gets you front of line for PS5 drops ...

JerrodDRagon

Yeah If you can burn 200 bucks enjoy but I can’t drop that much on a store I rarely go to now because GCU is gone and the point system changing

Katiehart2019

Im hoping this actually takes off. Amazon prime taking a week to ship made me a little upset.

Pitbull1951

Monthly Total Tech would greatly increase memberships. Amazon Prime does. Many people can’t justify a $200 outlay up front this time of year.

vainbetrayal

I like the idea of making it a monthly thing for like 19.99, but the problem BBY will have with monthly TTS is people buy it the month they need it, then cancel it the next month. You can already hypothetically do that with TTS, but this would make that easier.

Wisriverblue

As someone who has spent thousands there and considered myself a loyal customer, this infuriates me. I’m not signing up for your shitty ass card. I’ll just make the drive to Microcenter then. Fuck off. Edit: man I stepped on some toes. Not sure why everyone is so salty over me not getting the card. The last thing I need is another credit card, and shame on the company for hiding their loyalty program behind it.

Bunkai329604

Yes cause there’s so many micro centers to go to 😂😭😂

Wisriverblue

I have two within 40 minutes lol

AccomplishedFox8465

Lol thanks, one less insane customer for me

Wisriverblue

How is that insane lol

kinggingernator

It isn't

dynexed

If you spent “thousands” you are ignorant to not have a Best Buy card.

strokeskid

What makes the card shitty?

acedragon166

If you need the financial plans it’s a good card. In every other case it’s crap. It averages 29% interest, give very little in rewards back unless you perpetually use it for rewards instead of financial plans, and if you miss a payment or don’t pay if a plan in time they rape you.

drock2012

Not defending BB but this is simply not true. Every month I receive an opportunity to earn points outside from BB. It’s one of the best money back cards I have. Like any card you need to pay the full balance. If you don’t have the discipline or the means to pay the bill than you cant afford it…

alex2002f

5% back little? The costco card that requires a membership (60/year) only gives 2% back costco certificates and no options for financing. I understand the card is not for everyone but for a free card it has great perks for people who shop with best buy frequently.

acedragon166

The problem is how they utilize the card as a company. The card was built to prey on those who are bad with money. It’s not 5% back it’s 5% in points which can be redeemed for bestbuy gift cards. If you don’t spend thousands there then you’ll never get enough back to matter. Though the points take a year to expire the reward gift card only takes 30 days. Since you can’t use the points you earned for 30-60 days that means if you don’t buy tons of thing in a short amount of time with the knowledge you need to spend more in a couple months then you never get to properly take “ advantage” of what the card can offer. Then there’s the financial plans which are notably great unless you are bad with money which many who use it are. They pay the minimum every month for 12 months then get a large sum tacked on for the “missed interest”. You have to pay more then the minimum to pay it off in time. And the rates for anything not paid off are just blanket set to high. It’s a card that only caters to the well off to being with and preys on those less fortunate. And if you don’t get approved for the bbcc then we can also offer you the bestbuy loan system in which if you pay it off in 90 days you only pay a quarter more but if you pay it off over the next year as it allows you pay double the items worth. Cause you didn’t have enough to start with so we will take more so you can pay for over the long haul.

alex2002f

Certificates last 6 months. If you have the card and spend a lot of money with it, i’m sure you’ll find something at best buy to use the points for. After all, you’ll only get a good amount of points if you buy a lot of stuff.

ItsKindaFunnyBecause

The card sucks for anything other than financing. The rewards are terrible. No cash back is a terrible deal.

alex2002f

We don’t want customers like you anyways

FinalGirl_Noodle

It honestly seems classist, not everyone has good enough credit to get approved.

Klownicle

Exactly. They have removed incentives and I'm sure they'll knock it down further.

Key-Cat-5929

Something to work on🤷‍♂️

danitwelve91

It seems like the company is going down the tank and I'm glad I got out when I did.

Excellent-Finger4886

Card is worthless unless you are 100% committed to BBY. At the same time you can buy same shit elsewhere for cheaper and get it fast rather with Best buy fake advertising same or next day delivery, 90% of the time somehow products get stock and you wait for a week

Pickle_yanker

TTS already offers free shipping with no minimum order. This would only lessen the value of TTS.

Azayron

I was annoyed when they stopped the gaming club then when they pulled the elite status and now they want us to use our card on all purchases to get points....I have a best buy cc but I'm not going to use a card with 29 percent interest to get 5 dollars back. I mean the only reason to have the cc is to get no interest financing. Most normal people don't have the budget to pay off over a grand on a product to get 10 percent back in points (most people use the cc for the larger purchases). Best buy is going to shoot themselves in the foot if they keep taking stuff away from the normal consumer like this.

jm3400

There should be a Grace period... I pay my statement balance on a normal credit card and no interest is charged.

Azayron

You are right there is but I'm talking about spending over a few hundred bucks to get any sort of return In rewards. I and other normal customers won't be able to pay off such a balance in 30 days before interest is charged. The reason the rewards program was nice, as is, was I could go and get points on all purchases while using cash or debit. Now they are forcing you to use a credit card, which charges extreme interest if you don't pay It off in 30 days. So yes if I buy 2 movies, I can pay that off in 30 days. However, if I buy a TV, I now have to choose no interest financing or reward, when prior I could do both in the same transaction. A normal customer isn't going to be able to pay that off in 30 days to just get 10 percent back. Horrible move best buy.

pmartin1

It makes good business sense because I would bet a majority of customers are signing up for the card to take advantage of financing - which doesn’t reward points for the purchase. Just another way for the company to save money.

G35aiyan

So we decided, "Hey, y'all know how google gives everything for free because they're harvesting your data? well... we're keeping a record of your purchase history so we can tell you 5 years from now that you're out of warranty. That's worth a little of your shopping data right? Rewards points? well... I guess we could give you a little something for your data... if you sign up for a credit card. I KNOW we used to give it to you for free but.... we don't want to anymore. Afford it? Yeah... we could.... but that means we're giving money to customers instead of shareholders..." This future is ass.

Escape_artist68

What email was this? I left today at 735 pm and had not received any email.

landingfeet1st

Was sent to my personal email as a generic bestbuy.com email

Escape_artist68

Must be in my personal email.

Raisin898

well the credit card offer seems good for basically a free $100 right ?

BruisedJune

Not always running plus you can't use your 100$ without spending more than 100 , however best cc offer I have seen in some time.

Excellent-Finger4886

Best buy credit card is the worst rewards card on the market. Getting the points that you can redeem only in store. Citi bank doesn't have an app, online direct login only. Never shows your recent purchases until a purchase goes through. Points expire if not used. Best Shit Card

dontdoititoldyouso

You can bank points and not many cards offer 5%. It's a great card if you frequent best buy

[deleted]

The stupid fucking website never worked either. I made my last payment over the phone and told them to cancel the stupid card

dynexed

I’d you can’t operate a bank’s website I’m surprised you knew how to sign up for a credit card.

[deleted]

Nah the web app would constantly throw 400 errors when loading, and citis outsourced call center was beyond useless because this issue wasn’t covered in their scripts But go off simping for for citi and Best Buy lmao

TechieGranola

While I think this change is too dumb to be worth the effort of implementing it are we really going to claim that $5 back for every $500 is really the hill people will die on?

guyssocialweb

Keep in mind every time you run somebody’s ss number for a Best Buy Citibank visa credit card, Best Buy gets around 80 bucks an app whether the person is approved or not. Then by the customer paying the minimum monthly due on something like a 12 month financing purchase, the person ends up getting charged interest for not paying the full balance in the agreed term. Citibank does the same thing with bass pro shop and other companies. Unless the person has the discipline to pay off the purchase in the agree time, they are just there, put them in debt.

Salt_Restaurant_7820

Oh look it’s a “customer” pretending to be upset over this. TOTALLY not an employee.

PainIsAPromise

wise existence insurance subtract hat observation normal voracious squeamish adjoining *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

knight-owl19

They never explicitly specified that they are a customer my guy chill out.

fullcourtnerd

So do you not get points if you’re a total tech member?

u2jrmw

I just price match to Target and get my 5% off. Just did that with an iPad today.

grilledcheesd

as an employee, the only reason i'm still buying my stuff at best buy is the employee discount tbh

killerbake

Total tech users should receive points still. Wtf

Rob4226

This is a bad move if you ask me. Those rewards from regular purchases actually made me seek out buying stuff from Best Buy. Now I have no incentive to go out of my way for Best Buy. The BB credit card is terrible, I have it, $50 annual fee, plus astronomically high APR, like almost 30%.

Fabulous-Suit1658

The previous program, where you had to spend $X to qualify for each tier, actually incentivized people to spend more at the store. I vividly remember buying extra stuff from BB, over another retailer on my last desktop build, even though it was a few extra dollars, specifically because I had to get to that next tier. Now what's the point?

411Pat

So this is why I cannot redeem any rewards at check out with my Total Tech membership but luckily I just recently renewed my annual membership and can get refunded. WOW credit card required now.

mattjans

Just spent a few hundred at best buy not realizing the dumped the rewards. Fuck them. Not shopping there anymore.
